While it would be hard to believe we could get him, Newcastle United are again being linked with Dutch midfield super-star Rafael Van Der Vaart, following last night’s win against France.
Rafael Van der Vaart – Newcastle still interested
We had reported last week that Newcastle were not only interested in the Dutchman, but they were in fact leading the chase for him.
Van Der Vaart currently plays for Bundesliga side, Hamburg, since joining them in 2005 from Holland side Ajax.
He has been tipped for a move to the Premier League after the European tournament finishes.
Yesterday, he was again a star player for Holland, who took France apart 4-1, to record their second successive 3 goal victory, against World Champions, Italy, and Work Cup runners up France.
Not a bad couple of performances to start Euro 2008 with, that’s for sure.
Of course there are numerous Premier League clubs that have an interest in the player, but it’s Newcastle who are still said to be leading the chase.
We’ll believe it when we see it, but it’s hard to think a world class player, like Rafael, would come to Newcastle, when we cannot even offer him European football next season.
New Hamburg manager Martin Jol said about his 25-year-old player:
“We have to do all we can to keep hold of him.”
“He is one of the best five play-makers in Europe and he dictates the rhythm of Hamburg.”
We’ll keep an eye on this one, and hope miracles are still possible, in this day and age of world football.
