New Newcastle Managing Director Derek Llambias has today reaffirmed owner Mike Ashley’s backing for manager Kevin Keegan, after taking over the reins of the Newcastle United Board today.
Chris Mort and Derek – this is the only photo we have of Llambias
The club has finally confirmed Chris Mort’s departure as Chairman today, with Derek Llambias being handed the title of and new position of Managing Director by Ashley. We assume that’s an equivalent job to a CEO (Chief Executive Officer).
And in his first interview today, Derek has insisted manager Keegan is the right man for the manager job on Tyneside – we certainly agree with that.
Derek was interviewed this morning:
“Since coming to work at Newcastle United, I have quickly begun to appreciate the passion people have for the club,”
“I firmly believe we have the right people with the right expertise, with Kevin Keegan back as manager, and being fully supported by Mike Ashley and the directors, to take the club forward again.”
“At the same time, I’d like to pay tribute to all of the hard work done by Chris during his time at St James’ Park and wish him every success for the future.”
These remarks further shoot down the phantom rift at the club that the popular press has been trying to create, ever since Dennis Wise was appointed Director of Football at the club in January.
West Ham fan Llambias apparently had a box at St James’ Park last season, and had been Managing Director of the Fifty London casino before joining Newcastle last month as Deputy Chairman.
Keegan has already said OK to the transfers of Emre, David Rozehnal, Peter Ramage and Stephen Carr, and it looks like WBA are yet another club in for striker Shola Ameobi, who will be leaving the club in the summer.
Kevin, with the aid of Dennis Wise, will now start the task of bringing new players into the club.
That task will tell the fans just what type of player Newcastle can still attract this summer, but we think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised.
We hope so, anyway.
