Milner To Liverpool and Guthrie To Newcastle?

The Newcastle Journal is reporting today that progress on a deal to take James Milner to Liverpool has been proceeding.

James Milner – congratulating Oba – on his way to Liverpool?

While Newcastle will not do any big deals until Kevin returns this week from his NY vacation, the Journal is reporting that progress is expected on the deal that could lead to James Milner’s departure from St. James’ Park.

Aston Villa and Liverpool are rivals for the winger’s signature, and news today that Liverpool midfielder Danny Guthrie has been telling friends he expects to join Newcastle United shortly, has led to increased speculation that he is being used in part exchange – plus cash – for James Milner.

But Liverpool will face strong competition from Aston Villa and manager Martin O’Neill, who has been trying to get James to Villa for the last couple of years.

In our poll on whether Newcastle should sell Milner, 69% say no, with over 700 votes cast so far, so most fans want James to stay at Newcastle. You can still vote in this poll, if you haven’t already done so.

And in today’s Daily Mirror, they are saying that Newcastle now want £9M cash for James. If we are going to let one of our best young players go, we need to ensure we get the value for him.

Danny Guthrie – Liverpool 21 year-old central midfielder

Danny Guthrie is a central midfielder, who stands 5’9″ tall, and turned just 21 last April, so he’s around 16 months younger than Milner.

He played 25 times for Bolton last season and he will be one for the future, if we sign him.

He was born in Shrewsbury and grew up in Telford, and signed for Liverpool as a 15 year-old in 2002, after being released by Manchester United following a couple of seasons with them.

Danny was also on loan to Southampton earlier last year, and played 10 times for the south coast club.

Guthrie started his first match for Liverpool in the European Champions League against Galatasaray away, on 5th December 2006, which Liverpool lost 3-1.

His most recent appearance for Liverpool came in the 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park against Newcastle last year, on Saturday 10th February 2007.

He has played a total of 3 times for Liverpool.

If we sell Milner it will be no big deal as long as we replace him with quality. The fact that a couple of managers have been OK with his departure suggests they don’t think there is much more to come from him – and I tend to agree.

However if Bentley leaves Blackburn this may scuttle any deal unless Chelsea step in or Man Utd want him as a replacement for Ronaldo who looks set to leave. If we got 7m why don’t we go for Bentley?

Unless we are definately bringing in some attacking midfielders, this is a crazy move.

We all know KK isnt crazy, so, perhaps this is reason to be cheerful, part 1!!!!!

Does this mean that negotiations about Milner’s future have been going on while KK has been on holiday? He must have been in touch by phone surely? And Guthrie? A squad make weight? Also the gossip has a supposed target in Kaboul now on
Portsmouth’s list and Chimbonda to Villa? Why are we being lumped in with such clubs – who have not
our support, passion, history or potential? Guthrie comes from Shrewsbury a well known hotbed of English football.

£9 million for Milner is excellent business – be glad to see him go (runs round in circles).

What you have to remember is that Benitez is a terrible judge of player when it comes to wingers (Kewell, Pennant, Benyanon, etc)

Milner will be at Liverpool for 2 years max before being sold on because he never improved as a player

Guthrie is no great shakes and certaily not as good as Milner – Bentley will def not come to Newcastle as his “reasons” for moving are that he wants to pay european football

i see that Mort has officially stepepd down and that bloke that looks liek an owl has taken over – sort of. In the new three man structure we dont acutally seem to have a club chairman anymore eh. Also i see that cockney twat wise is some some of director of football for us now in a shared power thing with the owl…was this wise’s post before or has he suddenly jumped up a notch or two?? guthrie for milner, may as well just take the money from what everyone here says.

He’s a good lad and he works hard, but I agree with Spyro, he can be easily replaced.

I know he’s injured, and I doubt Rafa would part with him, but I wouldn’t mind getting Babel in return…

Milner doesn’t have a final ball or shot. He has everything else, but thats no good if he can’t finish a move. For the amount he’s played, he really hasn’t progressed like he should have. for gods sake, he’s played more than Rooney, and look how much Rooney has developed since he started playing!

I like Guthrie, he’s a very neat player. I’m sure he’s 2 footed as well, plus he can play anywhere in midfield. If we can get him and £9m for Milner, then thats good business! I’m surprised they haven’t tried for Insua either, him and Enrique would be good for LB!

Ericles…….we are being lumped in with Portsmouth and Villa because it’s is all as you say GOSSIP. I posted at the weekend that it’s all nonsense as there is no way Kaboul and Chimbonda would be on KK or Wises ‘lists’. It’s all paper speculation. I believe only the stuff about Gomis and Arda as it seems to have more ‘substance’ but stuff in the Mirror /Sun NOTW is simply made – up pub talk that the ‘gutter press’ print as fact.

craig chisholm……….I don’t get the constant criticism of D.Wise. Yep a little sh*t as a player but this is no reflection on his scouting/organisational ability.

It seems to get forgotten that when at Chelsea the fans loved him, he was their captain and led players of the calibre of Zola…..so he must have something going for him. Given that Chelsea were a multi-national side the guy must have some great contacts.

So howay lets lay off the bloke and at least give him a chance. He’s setting up a scouting network basically from scratch as there was next to nothing there under Fat Freddie

Here in Israel i don’t get to see too much game of Newcastle during the season but from what i have seen Milner have failed in the most important part: to provide ammunition for the strikers, his crosses and passing are bellow par and he is not that quick or dangerous going forward. >7 mil excellent.
And don’t take Benayun, he is our best player in Israel but is not good enough the main reason being – his shot is terrible which is a great downside for an attacking midfielder.

Alex, I go to all NUFC home games and quite a few away. Therefore, I have seen a lot of him. I believe your assessment of him to be correct.

He does have some talent, but lacks class and is wasteful. His other problem is that he is one paced. That said, he has a great attitude.

If i felt we could replace him with someone better, I would say “bye bye” but that is a big if…

Some of you lot on here talk a right load of bollox at times. ALEX has just admitted that he doesn’t see many games but still thinks he’s qualified to pass judgement on him. Well, let me set you straight. Milner has been one of out most consistent performers of late. He isn’t blessed with electric pace but he isn’t slow by any means. He can cross and he often sets goals up – it’s not his fault that half of our strike force has little or no positional sense. He can also beat players with the ball at his feet and he isn’t afraid to take people on. Most importantly – he always works his ass off, puts the boot in when it needs it and never goes whingeing to the press when he is treated like crap.

If we get rid of Milner it will be a big, big mistake. If he’d had a better support/coaching team around him he’d be right up there with England’s hottest young talent. The truth is he’s been messed about by the Toon and yet he still seems to want to stay.

I really do despair at times with the shite that is spewed on here. The same people who dismiss milner’s talent think Emre was some kind of messiah. Says it all really.

Milner is ok but not great. We fans have a tendency to think our players better than they are. I’ve seen Guthrie plenty of times and have always said he looks good for his age. Can’t believe there’s so much opposition to him coming! Milner on the other hand can’t cross, isn’t fast (two qualities needed in a winger) but we love him coz of his enthusiasm and willingness to throw himself into tackles. Granted, Milner will probably improve – but if he thinks he’ll do that elsewhere best to sell him on now while Pool think he’s a decent buy!

    CHICKEN

You are a legend, Thank god someone else sees it i get so annoyed with the shit thrown at Milner from people who have never seen the kid

He has it and good luck to him at Liverpool because he deserves the chance to get to the top for club and country and even more good luck to Danny Guthrie because hes going to need it when the armchair brigade see him play.

Obafan are you really thick enough to think that O’Neill and Benitez would be talking about massive sums of money like that if he was average.

Youre probably from the same school of thought that criticized them when O’Neill bought Ashley Young for £10m or Rafa bought Torres for £25m

There was a Liverpool fan the other day saying how much Rafa and their fans were impressed when Milner tore them apart playing for Villa, putting some Great crosses and dangerous set pieces and caused them no end of trouble, Average players dont do that to top teams.

Chicken , i pass judgment with the limitation of 8-10 games i see in the season. I agree on the strong points you mentioned but our total evaluation vary, i also think that Owen and Viduka have excellent positioning sense and they await crosses in the box, where the goal is :)))

I hope we do buy someone inspiring for the coming season and hold on to our strikers.

CRAIGG – Okay Benitez and O’Neil apperantly admire Milner, but they can also make mistakes. If Milner shows that he can play at that level, then I take back my words, but ATM he is not that special. Indeed, his attitude is fantastic, but his play is average.

gerodie genius – Totally agree there, Milner was not in the team that had the run in April.
