More news today in the Daily Mail that Newcastle will bid £5M for Glasgow Ranger’s Spanish center-back Carlos Cuellar.
Carlos Cuellar – Newcastle to bid £5M for him
With Kevin Keegan returning from his holidays this week we expect Newcastle to firm up bids for some of their top targets.
One of those, since January, has been the impressive 6’3″ Spaniard Carlos Cuellar, who Rangers bought fom Osasuna, for £2.4M only last summer.
Kevin Keegan has been impressed with Cuellar in the times he’s returned to Glasgow to run the rule over the big Spaniard, and believes Carlos could be a big hit in the Premier league. Kevin has been quotes as saying there’s no better center-back in Britain than Cuellar.
Keegan will be strengthening the Newcastle defense in the summer – which seems an annual task for the club – with 3 or even 4 new defenders arriving.
Walter Smith, the experienced Rangers manager, needs to bring in some decent players himself, and may well be tempted by Newcastle’s offer and a potential £2.6M profit on Carlos in one season. Rangers may well accept the offer.
Cuellar had a terrific debut season in Scotland, with 36 games and 4 goals, but the £5M offer would bring in some valuable transfer funds for the Glasgow side, who have had renewed success since Smith took over the helm again at Rangers.
In April, Cuéllar won the Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Year award and in early May, he won the Scottish Football Writers Associations Footballer of the Year award.
Carlos, who full name is Carlos Javier Cuéllar Jimenez, turns 27 in late August and was born in Madrid.
