Carlos Cuellar – Newcastle to bid £5M for him

With Kevin Keegan returning from his holidays this week we expect Newcastle to firm up bids for some of their top targets.

One of those, since January, has been the impressive 6’3″ Spaniard Carlos Cuellar, who Rangers bought fom Osasuna, for £2.4M only last summer.

Kevin Keegan has been impressed with Cuellar in the times he’s returned to Glasgow to run the rule over the big Spaniard, and believes Carlos could be a big hit in the Premier league. Kevin has been quotes as saying there’s no better center-back in Britain than Cuellar.

Keegan will be strengthening the Newcastle defense in the summer – which seems an annual task for the club – with 3 or even 4 new defenders arriving.

Walter Smith, the experienced Rangers manager, needs to bring in some decent players himself, and may well be tempted by Newcastle’s offer and a potential £2.6M profit on Carlos in one season. Rangers may well accept the offer.

Cuellar had a terrific debut season in Scotland, with 36 games and 4 goals, but the £5M offer would bring in some valuable transfer funds for the Glasgow side, who have had renewed success since Smith took over the helm again at Rangers.

In April, Cuéllar won the Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Year award and in early May, he won the Scottish Football Writers Associations Footballer of the Year award.

Carlos, who full name is Carlos Javier Cuéllar Jimenez, turns 27 in late August and was born in Madrid.

Boumsong had a great first season at Rangers…

    Hmmm…

This lad has won me over though. Since we’ve expressed an interest I’ve watched Cuellar 3 or 4 times and he’s always looked solid.

HeronMag – yes – certainly our last center-back buy from Rangers was an unmitigated disaster – you’re right there.

Don’t pay them any money for Cuellar. The simple thing for ALL Newcastle fans is a straight swap for ALAN SMITH.

One good season in the SPL does not mean an accomplished Premier League defender, by any stretch of the imagination.

Is he going to make another huge improvement to cope with the players he is going to have to deal with together with the pace of the game south of the border??

A worthwhile capture and a good addition if we can get him. It is a Daily Mail story though and we know what an ass’s ear their reporters can make of things. So – caution coupled with hope I suppose.

    5 mill, good business.
not sure if we would need another defender as well. i wouldve gone for garay of racing santander, but he’s gone to madrid now. jack hobbs would be another one to look at. not guthrie, average.

If he is that good, why hasnt he been considered for the spanish nationalteam? Even J-A Boumsong looked like a good defender in the SPL. No thanks for me!

Ed – to be fair I say Boumsong had a good first season for Rangers, but I think he only played about 23 games before we threw away £8000,000!

Ah the good old Souness years…

I agree with Jimmie (11) – feel there’s better defenders out there for a similar amount of money! if he is as good as KK says! why isn’t he in the Euro’s fighting for a place for spain?

To be fair anyone can look good in scottish league, and to be fair the other teams are poor so coming to Newcastle will be too big of a move of stlye and pase and he will just be another flop i reacon.

Swap deal for smith, then it doesnt matter if he’s a flop, we’ll have just traded like for like (and probably taken a few grand off the wage bill as well)

Even Boumsong’s in the French squad nowadays. I have been impressed with him in Europe, but the pace of the game is a lot slower there than in the Premiership.

If rangers are willing to accept bids of 5 mill i think there will be a lot more teams after him. I dont think he would go for any less than 8 mill and even at that price there will be lots of competition.remember spurs just paid 8 mill for hutton so the journos crap about them being short of money for potential signings is rubbish.

    My concerns with this:

    1. Spanish centre back
    2. Scottish Premier League
    3. Spanish centre back

This supposed deal makes the Lord very very nervous.

Prawn sarnie! if arteta cant get in the spanish side for euros & he plays for everton in the premier league, good season & run in europe! what hope did cueller have playing in spl! he looks solid thats for sure! My dad is celtic fan & even he rates this lad! you know how much they hate eachother! i think we should try for him & metzelder from germany & real, he’s been out injured all season but still doesn’ t look to bad in euros!

Anybody else agree that gomis has looked shat in this comp? as to Gomez? think it should be crouch all the way for our new man up top! at least he’s proven at this level! wouldn’t mind saha on season long loan deal, bolton are sniffing why not us? & evans! thoughts?

Not fussed about him. SPL isn’t a good testting ground for premier league players. For the same reason, I’m notthat fussed that the filthy mackems are in for McGeady either.

Apparently Cuellar isn’t that fussed about us either. He wants silverware and considers us a bottom of the league team.

Thuram is claiming there is interest for him from Scotland……so thats Celtic or Rangers basically.

If they are looking for a CB then there may be some mileage in this story.

Again the Boumsong transfer still haunts me

alex……I’m not prejudiced. I’m only stating from experience of our previous spanish centre back (he of the poorly hand) and previous buys from the SPL.

Hierro was a great player . You’re right, but only in Spain. Not at Bolton.

There is a reason why there have been so few Spanish defenders, not to mention successful Spanish defenders, in the English league and that is that the style of football just doesn’t suit.

Now I’m more than happy to see Cuellar break that mould, but up until he or someone else does I’ll always be nervous about Spanish centre backs.

Feel free to prove otherwise, but until then, calm down with the ‘prejudice’ and ‘bullshit’ tags. Cheers

5mil for cuellar would be a good move, prudent compared to our previous regime, considering boumsong for 8mil and he had not shown anything compared to cuellar in the uefa cup
