If Aiden McGeady really is a Newcastle target, we had better get ready to put in our bid.
Aiden McGeady – Roy Keane keen to sign Celtic winger
The Sun is reporting today that Roy Keane is ready to smash Sunderland’s transfer record with a £10M bid for the Celtic youngster.
The previous record was only set last year, for another Scot, when they signed goalkeeper Craig Gordon from Hearts for £9M.
Keane knows McGeady from the Republic of Ireland set-up, and also his short time playing at Parkhead, after he had left Manchester United.
And he must have been impressed with what he saw, because McGeady could be the first player through the door this summer for Sunderland.
Sunderland are said to be ready to move quickly for the 22-year-old, who is also said to be one of the 237 players who are being targeted by Newcastle this summer. 😀
With Keegan returning this week from vacation, we should get a better idea of exactly who Newcastle are really going after.
But it’s important in the transfer market to get in early, so we get the good deals.
Aiden has played 112 times for Celtic and scored 21 goals, and has played 18 times for Ireland, and even though he was born in Glasgow in 1986, of Scottish parents, he plays for Ireland.
Why is that you may ask?
The reason is when he was at Celtic they wouldn’t let him play for his school side and so he couldn’t play for Scotland Schoolboys, because you had to first play for your school team. (Scotland Schoolboys have since rescinded that rule).
So Aiden was selected for Ireland Schoolboys and he elected (against his father’s wishes as it turns out) to go on to play for the full Ireland team. How bizarre.
It could turn out to be a head to head battle between north east rivals, Sunderland and Newcastle for the player, which could be more than interesting.
