Arsenal Challenge Newcastle For Plymouth’s Spear

There is some worrying news today that Newcastle could lose out to Arsenal, in the race to sign star 15 year-old striker Aaron Spear from Plymouth Argyle.

Aaron Spear – Arsenal now challenging Newcastle for player

As we’ve reported already, the 15-year-old forward has held talks with Newcastle’s Executive Director of Football Dennis Wise, and scout Lil Fuccillo about 10 days ago, and we know FA Cup winners Portsmouth were also keen on his services.

And we also knew last week that Arsenal were interested, and that their boss Arsene Wenger was particularly keen on the youngster.

Arsenal have already had success in the teenage transfer market after beating off competition from rivals Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton to complete a £5M deal for Cardiff’s brilliant 17 year-old Aaron Ramsay.

We had thought that Newcastle were in the driver’s seat with Spear, and that Aaron had set his heart on a move to Newcastle.

But we’d be a lot happier if young Aaron Spear was signed, sealed and delivered to Newcastle United.

These are the deals that can pay off big time for the club in the future, but we have to be successful with the very top youngsters, like Aaron Spear.

It would’nt surprise me in the slightest if the Gooners beat us to the kid.

They have the pull and are the leading club in developing youths. We should of snapped him up weeks ago, the longer this one goes on the less chance we have imo.

I think Pompey would even look appealing to him as he would not have to up root his family.

well if we lose him its all down to cockend wise. argylle said they wanted 1 million so we went in with 150 grand. thats it, end of story. if we had got close to the 1 million he would have signed ages ago. lets be honest, if this is true, we will have no chance will we. you never know though, it could all be a load of crap in the papers as usual. who says we were even in for him in the first place? its silly season!

Prawn Sandwiches. The media will never get bored with us. We are, it seems, their plaything.

Wenger does have a knack of getting the younger players in, and to be fair, he does have a lot to offer them at Arsenal.

Unless you’re a Toon fan, I’d say you’d be more likely to head to London and the prospect of playing for one of the premier league’s most consitent teams.

Still, you never know, we looked favourites last week. Wonder what’s changed…

craig chisolm- we did offer the 1million, we offered 150k up front and the rest depending on how he develops, but they wanted more up front and lower installments

georide nick, yeah i know but it amounted to us wanting to just give 150 grand up front like you say. we were trying to get away with a bid on the cheap or thats how i see it. we should have just given more cash like they wanted. what does our board exactly want? they wont pay 4 million for dunne cos he’s 29 and they wont pay more than 150 grand for a hotshot prospect. we seem to have reservations at both ends of the wage, age, prospect etc. if this kid is that good….and he will be if arsene wants him -that man just does not get it wrong – surley he must be worth more than what ashley won on one night in the casiono just two weeks ago.

Has Wise actually got anyone lined up? We can’t even nail down a 15 year old who wants to come to us !!! I’m all for Vetere and to some degree Jimenez, with all their contacts, but Wise just can’t seem to conclude anything at all for his 1.5M a year salary.

Ashley may be good on the stock market but I think he has got a lot to learn in the transfer market. Wise ought to know better though. Dragging our feet again? Or are we really seeing that KK is actually in charge and has not made his moves yet?
We will miss out on Spear because of the pull of London and Bender Burger. Once again we forgot to shut the gate and the horse has bolted. Shame.

You have to laugh when people are complaining that we didn’t go out and spend £1 million on someone who’s just turned 15 and that they’ve never seen play.

I write an Arsenal blog, which has reported on this story, and i actually know Aaron himself.

    http://youngguns.wordpress.com/2008/06/16/arsenal-put-contract-offer-to-plymouth-striker-spear/

He told me he doesnt want to move to Arsenal, because of the amount of compeition in the youth setup.

Your only competition is from Portsmouth

I heard recently that the toon would not sanction a 4 million bid years ago for a young kid called Torres. Ronaldo was also known to Sir Bob, donkeys years ago.

He might well be worth the risk but it sounds like wise and co are scared silly of MA.

Could not find Wesley Ngo Baheng on the official site , is he still with us ?

    Hi
I am 15 from Newport, South Wales
Ive played against this guy in the English Schools trophy
Plymouth beat us 7-3 and he scored 4
What a player!! but also what a w*nker and a wind up to players and management of the oppisition.
He also has a twin brother who plays on the left wing. Both great players you should go for them both
As much as i hated playing against him i wish him the best of luck in his career… hope to face him again one day 😉
