The Daily Mail is reporting today that Steven Taylor is ready to sign a new contract at Newcastle.

Steven Taylor - wants to stay at Newcastle
But we’re not sure that there is anything really new in what the Mail is reporting.
His new agent, Leon Angel, did hold preliminary talks in London, with Vice-President of Player Recruitment, Tony Jimenez in early May.
But there has been no subsequent news on what happened, although it was a good move by Steven to get a professional agent handling his contract talks, rather than his father, Alf.
Steven Taylor started to produce some of his best form last season under Kevin Keegan, with the aid of the experienced influence of Abdoulaye Faye playing alongside him.
Certainly in the last 10 games of the season Steven again looked a solid and commanding figure, for one still only 22 years old and still learning his trade.
Taylor is on significantly less wages than most first team figures at the club, and it seems he’s getting around £10K/week on Tyneside. Boy, it’s a wonder he can even get by on those wages.
In the contract talks late last summer he was apparently offered about double that, but his father, who at that time was acting as his agent, turned it down, and seemed upset at the way the club were treating the negotiations.
We’re not sure what the club will finally offer him, but we think Steven will reach an agreement with the club, and if he goes on to command a regular place and Newcastle are successful next season, the club will always be willing to award him an improved contract.
As long as he does the job for Newcastle, which a lot of our high wage earners didn’t do last season, and some of them have already been shipped out.
We also need to secure a certain Michael Owen to a long term deal too, and the sooner the better as far as we are concerned.
Comments welcome.

i have seen a few good articles on one site about what we need in the summer transfer window. its just the goalies, rb, lb, cb, and winger positions covered so far but an interesting read

5 Julio Geordio // Jun 18, 2008 at 11:26
Good to read.
However, this situation should never gotten as far as it has. Should have been sorted out sooner.
Hope this is a start of a lot more good news for the club.
6 The Entertainers // Jun 18, 2008 at 11:32
I fail to see why his own contract and those of Owen, Harper and possibley Martins could not have been sorted out before now.
Did Manu wait to tie Ferdinand down, no, nearing the end of the season himself and 2 other players were tied down.
Now is the time for players coming and going into our club and we dont need staff tied up wrangling contracts!
Off my soap box now……about time!

villa have agreed a sidwell fee-now we’ll find out if we are interested or not. imo solid player but there are better out there who will come and also he’ll choose villa over us unless we offer loads of money
also he’s ginger

23 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:15
if we arent plannin on signin owen up long term(and it looks like we arent so far) then 10mil is a good price as he only has 1yr left, swap him for anelka!!!!
24 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:17
Geordie Nick i would take Anelka over most in the prem apart from Berba, Adebayor and Torres. He is still a class striker when playing at domestic level and he contributes a hell of a lot to link up play…however, his wages would be ridiculous so…
25 ToonKing // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:18
i see we are after Servet Cetin, another monster of a defender , Turkey’s best player so far in the tournament. Would be magic to get him and Arda too, but in that case i wouldn’t wanna be a Galata board member that’s for sure….

30 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:21
i personally dont think anelkas wages wud be as much as owens, lets face it he wudnt hav been on big money at bolton, and i cant imagine he wud demand a huge rise to go from bolton to chelsea, although chelsea are probly stupid enough to just offer him big wages anyway
31 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:22
its ok, my room mate just told me he is 27, youngee than i thought, would be a great buy

36 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:25
bolton cudnt pay 100k/week , i wud imagine the most they cud offer is probly up 2 80 at a push, and i dnt really see 80k per weel as BIG money in this day and age
37 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:26
i think he was on about that geordie nick, i think he is on 90 at chelsea
which means if he were to come here he would want at least 100
38 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:27
toonphill- arda wont be comin here anymore, gsfan translated something from turkey earlier from arda sayin he wont leave until hes played in galas new stadium, and also quotes from arsene wenger saying he has been watchin arda all season and thinks hes fantastic
39 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:27
i agree toonphill, i would be ecstatic with those two buys, absolutely ecstatic
40 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:29
possibly yeah, although dependin on how much he wants 1st team football he may be willing to accept them same or even a bit lower, depends how badly he wants to be playing
41 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:29
arsene wenger is a liar, if he has been watching him all season then why are they only interested after seeing him in the euro, he is just saying that to impress Arda

Owen - 10 million for a 28 year old who will surely be injured again - it’s only a matter of time and on over 100K a week.
indeed bite their hand off.
Re - Taylor never thought he was as good as he seems to think he is.
46 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:32
toonphill- i agree, thts not the part im worried about, its the quotes from arsene saying hes scouted him all season and thinks hes fantastic, lets face it, choice between us, and arsenal(the best team in the world for develping players), who is he goin to choose?????
47 Northumberland Magpie // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:34
Tom Toon what has happened to the news regarding signings that you promised yesterday?
48 bailey // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:34

He is very average to say the least. Call his bluff.
49 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:35
Depends if he wants first team football or not geordie nick, where is arda going to play?
Arsene Wenger already said Vela is going straight into the first team and we all know he will not play him as a striker but instead on the left.
Hleb is likely to stay now and Nasri is on his way, add to that rosicky, diaby, denilson, he has no space. Arsene probably just saying it just in case the nasri deal falls through
50 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:37
spyro- yeah i suppose, well just hav to hope tht thy manage to keep hold of all ther players!!!
51 ToonPhill // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:40
Geordie Nick - lol arsenal are a better prospect, and also are infamous for their youth devolpment, but i still think the toon could have a chance. better to be a big fish in a small pond and all tht. shock moves still happen. vdv was a shock move to hamburg wasnt it? so i still hope
i also think ambition helps, modric said he was impressed with the spuds outright desire to get him. so if we could move with more urgancy, we could pull this off
ps wenger watches for ages i believe without doin anythin sometimes, i think hes been watchin kompany for years
52 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:41

apparently tottenham are strong favourites to sign bentley, why are all the top teams standing by as tottenham sign up all of the top young talent?
55 ToonPhill // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:47
very true. lol the euros have been a pain in the arse for us. but still, croatia is gonna walk all over turkey and then we can try and wrap him up. the 3 wise men should be there the mornin afta with a cuppa and a stottie cake ready for talks imo.
56 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:49
i wouldnt bet money on croatia walking over turkey toon phill, turkey have this annoying ability to lose to lesser teams and then somehow win against the better ones, Croatia is somewhere in the middle of all that, will be a close game
57 Geordie Nick // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:50
spyro- why are WE standing by letting the sign all the top youngsters, we shud be in for bentley, he apprently wants to move for champions league football, yet its villa, spurs who are in for him, if hes willing to go to one of those surely he wud come here

60 Spyro // Jun 18, 2008 at 12:54
with all due respect Geordie Nick Croatia are yet to come against a good side, Germany have been piss poor so far in this tournament and only luckily got through because of a wonder goal from Ballack. Noooo, that news about Servet is rubbish! lol. No way in hell are we selling Servet! That thing is our juggernaut! He gets injured in numerous spots but still plays with 100% efficiency and scores some goals too.
If Servet and Arda both leave, expect an angry mob of fans outside the club’s building with pitchforks and torches demanding the person who’s responsible for this!
Btw Arda’s latest statement sorta contradicts with what he said in his interview he did for Milliyet a couple of weeks ago or so. That is why I’d say wait till the end of the Euros for the ‘real statements’. And that’s why you guys should also have patience imo for your board :p I’m sure they’ll snap up some good players from the Euros.

Fair play to the club for the way they handled Taylor’s contract, he was offered a contract on par with Milner and N’Zogbia yet turned it down because he felt being a local lad he deserved more, getting his dad to go to Alan Oliver and getting a sob story printed didn’t do him any favours either.
The club have refused to throw money at what is an average defender and Taylor had to back down when he realised they would let him leave before giving him anywhere near the £50k pw he was demanding.

91 michael12 // Jun 18, 2008 at 14:25
I agree. Would rather See Owens Contract extended then Taylor.
It is interesting to read that the majority of you in tis forum including ED, seemingly find agreable the retaining of Taylor.
He was error prone last season and was one of our worst performers in defence.
Of the starting four, Baye, Faye, Taylor and Enrique, Taylor was the weakest link.
We would shread him every game and yet here we are now, that he has signed praising the efforts of our recruitment team.
Soon we will hear Smith has signed a new deal and you will all be saying what a great player he is and that he ia a geordie at heart.
I called for a revolution this summer, not an evolution of what we had last season. We were trash last season and that is a fact gentlemen. We need change in many of the departments and if we are keeping Milner, keeping taylor, soon we will find Ameobi is staying. We need change and the only reason I can see us having signed taylor is to ensure we sell him rather than let him leave on a bosman.
92 Tom_Toon // Jun 18, 2008 at 14:36
Agree with michael12 above.
Taylor is quite poor.
93 CRAIGG // Jun 18, 2008 at 14:42
You cannot compare Taylor and Milners contributions over the past two seasons to that of Alan Smith last season
In 06-07 Taylor, Milner, Butt, Martins and Harper were the only reasons we didnt go down
Why does everyone rate Enrique so highly, He aint bad but you talk like he’s Stuart Pearce reincarnate, If we can sign Nicky Shorey then Enrique would be the back up guaranteed as KK plainly doesnt rate him too highly.
I dont dislike Enrique but he made costly mistakes too but the reaction to him is he is a young player who will improve, Why cant Taylor be afforded the same luxury.
94 brownrob // Jun 18, 2008 at 14:43

Agree Geordie nick wish we done business like those arseholes at spurs they see who they want usually when we’re linked with them, dont quibble about the transfer fee and sign the player, simple.
99 michael12 // Jun 18, 2008 at 15:22
@ Craigg. You miss the point. No one said Enrique is the next big thing nor has
Taylor is simply poor, you do not have to listen to me simply look at his performances last season. Actions speak louder than words.
100 harrier // Jun 18, 2008 at 15:39
Hmm if I recall the Owen transfer was very fast
101 Yorkie Dave // Jun 18, 2008 at 15:45
Enrique had an ok 1st season but how many foreign players come to the prem and are class in their 1st season. he is young has potential and has the frame for a very good full back. if he had played in england as long as shorey would be twice the player Shorey is!!! Taylor is still young and still learning and its not his fault that we seem to partner him with dodgy centre backs. If we got a class centre back in the team Taylor would learn and start to shine. He will get a new contract and hopefully we will sign a decent player to go in at the back with him.
I want Arda VanDerVaart Sunny (from Valencia) also Kompany could be a great if we sign him and i most certainly do NOT want Crouch hope he goes to Pompy and breaks his leg. Out of them we wont get any cos the recruitment team are too slow!!! All will be gone when our faxes drop on their clubs desks!!!

‘getting around £10K/week on Tyneside. Boy, it’s a wonder he can even get by on those wages.’
that’s not really the point ed, i think he dad was right when he said the club take advantage of the fact the lads a geordie when it comes to paying him,
he’s put alot more in to playing for the team than others that are on 3 times his wage,
I for one hope he gets a decent contract as i think for his age, he’s deserved one.
