Newcastle Pursue Dutch Midfielder

One of our readers in Holland is saying there is news over there that Newcastle United may be interested in FC Twente 6’5″ midfielder Orlando Engelaar.

Orlando Engelar – FC Twente 6’5″ midfielder

One of our readers in Holland, Alan Devon, has said he heard yesterday that Newcastle are trying to sign Holland’s Orlando Engelaar, from FC Twente, as a replacement for Emre.

Portsmouth and Everton are also said to be linked with the player, and the price is reported to be around £7m, which seems a bit high to us.

But Alan is very positive on Orlando, and thinks he would be a great buy for Newcastle, and says the boy’s been playing great football for Twente.

At 6’5″ tall Orlando is said to be a commanding presence in midfield, and also happens to be one of the tallest players in the Eredivisie.

Orlando was previously a striker, but he now plays in midfield, and has greatly impressed with his aerial and passing abilities. He is very much an attack-minded player, so it seems he would fit into the Keegan mold.

He’s so far played 56 times for FC Twente and scored 8 goals, and represented Holland 7 times.

Engelaar turns 29 years old in late August.

That’s about all we know about the player, and he’s another one to add to the very long list of possible Newcastle arrivals this summer.

Comments welcome.

seen him in a few friendly games before the Euros, and he looked excellent, looks comfortable on the ball, great range of passing, and just strolled through the game, but on the other hand it was only friendlies!

The speculation and no action is so depressing. So instead I would like to take the opportunity to say well done to the Irish people for striking a blow for democracy by voting NO. It is only a pinprick on the hide of the Euro-dinosaur but at least it is something positive.

    Now for some big signings.

He’s not really high-profile in the Dutch league despite his call up to the national squad but this is mainly because of his style of play…he’s a very simple player, not much pace and suprisingly he doesnt often use the huge physique he has but more often than not just concentrates on his passing game.

It was on Dutch commentry to the Russia game that it was mentioned he was linked to 3 Premier League clubs including Newcastle but just like back home there are rumours everywhere here. I’ve had Huntelaar to Barcelona and Affelay to Tottenham.

Man United have been linked with Huntelaar for ages and Marc van Bommel might also find his way to Man City who are also like Toon rumoured to be after van der Vaart.

Sounds to me that there are so many good players available that there should be enough for everyone.

Mind if Gomis is worth 15m we are in trouble cos he looks no better than Shola.

Saw him against France/Italy looked like he could possibly do a job but whether he has the creative flair we’re crying out for is debatable. Keep reading people say we’ve no chance of signing Arsharvin, Turan etc – why not? We’ve got a stadium and a team that’s the heartbeat of a major city. 50,000+ fans every week and a manager who bleed black and white. What player wouldn’t give serious consideration to that? Have faith remember no one thought they’d see Ginola, Asprilla & Shearer in black and white at one point!

How was voting no striking a blow for democracy? Are you aware of why the no vote passed?

Agreed this is beyond a joke, and has reached a new low.

    off the topic:

i said yesterday we should go after zhirkov instead of arda, and a lot of you…well…everyone really disagreed with me…

    let’s look at the facts:

    zhirkov is:

    -stronger
    -faster
-his crossing is world class, so are his set pieces
-yesterday he ran all the time and the guy didn’t look tired one bit
    -he’s a team player
    -he’s used to cold 😉
    -more experienced
-he wouldn’t need a year to adapt..especailly if we sign him along with arshavin
-plus like tom toon said in a post a few days ago…arda’s young and we’re probably just one step in his career…there’s like 2% chance he’d still be with us when he’s at the peak of his career (at 27-31)

    GET HIM!

plus if arshavin is 11m, i think we could get zhirkov for…8m?

So after three average games in the Euro’s he is suddenly a target. Rubbish, he may move in the summer but I wouldn’t want him. He clearly aint great or he would be at a bigger club than FC Twente by now.

Nightfall is correct the only player (apart from Andrei) that has impressed me is Zhirkov if we could buy both of them he is a LB though for Russia so he can solve that area where we have pushed N Zogbia there so lets hope we can get him and Asharvin, VDV is to unrealistic and he may leave but to a champions league team, he looks quite good and could attract getting VDV as well but this guy will be quite expensive and may not be worth it, but still a better player we have been linked with over past days.

I live in Iceland and there is a no 10 who is an amazing player, he’s about 6 foot tall and has great skill, he maybe in the twilight of his career as I think he is over 40, Sportacus is his name I think….I think Newcastle have been looking at him on Nick junior.

From watching him in the Euros he looks like more of a DM to me, maybe because Holland have wingers that like to get forward with the full backs but him and de Jong seem to sit in midfield and rarely venture forward. think he is a bit old to be honest we need someone young to add a bit of flair to the squad.

This guy has really impressed me during the Euro campaign, definitely one of the standouts of the Dutch team – but maybe that’s just because of his giant frame which would be useful for a fairly small team like ours. He’s done well at breaking up attacks behind Van der Vaart and Sneijder and occasionally marauding forward himself.

Probably just media pebbledash really though, I heard he’d already signed for Schalke and he’s not the kind of player we desperately need at the moment (although we do need A LOT of players).

And on the subject of Van der Vaart, we haven’t got a hope in hell of getting him and that’s a fact, so we might as well not waste the lives of our keyboards typing his name continuously.

We can’t offer Europe but we can offer exposure.

Just like when the two Argies moved to West Ham, they got themselves in the shop window for 6 months / 1 year before moving onto Liverpool & Man Utd. West Ham benefited though in the short term and maybe with a slightly better team they could have secured Europe the next season.

Its a big issue and way beyond the scope of a discussion on this blog. But in a nutshell the Euro juggernaut is becoming unstopable and will slowly (or quickly) erode the rights of the individual. Central government is ok if it is fair and even but most rational people can see the that this is not going to be the outcome. Has anyone read the proposed outline constitution, its actually a near impossibility, just reams and reams of red tape and this is what is going to control our lives. Believe me it is going to be a bad thing and will cost us (especially the British) billions of pounds. I could go on and on but most people think its nothing to do with them and find it boring, so I will end my rant. But once again well done Eire.

so if we buy arda or zihrkov for the left wing birth.what happens to duff and the zog.if we buy arshavin for the right side ,what happens to milner?the zog and milner are at the perfect age to start coming good under the right guidance.we need a world class midfield central playmaker and a ball winner.a world class centre half and back ups for zog ,milner, beye and enrique

This isn’t even a story from a reader – it’s a direct lift from the appalling newcastle-mad website.

“Ed” mate – your “stories” are blatant attempts to drive up traffic to the site in order to mug daft advertisers out of their cash.

“We” think most of the time you’re talking/writing cobblers.

However, if you’re going to reporting everything ….. told tell anyone I told you…… but I saw Arshavin’s lass (with the girlfriend of that blond Russian striker with the long name) in Homebase on Team Valley yesterday looking at curtain material and plant pots. A sure sign they’ve already signed.

He has not signed for shalke yet, but his FC twente coach Fred Rutten is the new shalke coach and it seems he will be going to them.I personally dont think he would set the premership alight there are better midfielders in the eredivisie to be had .Afellay or De guzman would be a beter buy.
