Manchester United, Newcastle and Aston Villa were all linked yesterday with a move for the Romanian center-back Dorin Goian.
Dorin Goian – Newcastle’s first reported interest last December
The current Steaua Bucharest center-back has played superbly for Romania in Euro 2008, with Romania impressing everyone with their defensive solidity, against Italy and Holland.
The 27 year old, who stands at 6â€5, has been very steady in the heart of the defense for Romania, both during qualification for Euro 2008 and at the tournament itself.
Now that good form seems to have attracted a number of Premier clubs to the giant center-back, who would seem to be well suited to play in England.
Goian is excellent in the air, and formed a strong partnership with Tamas for Romania, and is also good at set pieces with his height and heading ability.
Goian plays for Steaua Bucharest, and has spent 4 seasons at his country’s top side, and helped them to semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2005/2006.
Newcastle have been interested in Goian for a while now, but have so far held off making any move for the player.
We don’t know if he would be second choice to Carlos Cuellar, the Spanish center-back at Rangers, who impressed greatly in his first season for the Scottish side.
The Romanian is rated at around £3.5M.
Dorin Nicolae Goian was born in December, 1980 in Suceava, Romania. He is renowned for scoring goals even though he is a center-back.
He has played 78 times for Steaua Bucuresti since 2004, but has scored just 5 goals. He has played for his country 21 times and scored 3 goals.
His previous clubs include NC Foresta Suceava, FCM Bacău and Ceahlăul Piatra Neamţ. Dorin has played over 220 first class games and scored more than 14 goals.
Dorin Goian is known by Steaua’s fans as “Goeâ€, a nickname derived from his given name.

Comment #3Never heard of him tbh
Surely just a couple more players and Newcastle would have been connected with every single player in Euro 08.
It’s just like collecting Pannini stickers all over again

Comment #9Bad news : Galatassary want £16 million for Turan
Good news : It’s put Arsenal off buying him
Still it’s an extra £7 million from our original bid of £9 million just because he played well in 2 games

Comment #13Reports are appartently linking us with Engelaar of Holland.
Now that would appleal to me, we do need a defensive midfielder and this guy is formidable as well as being able to pass!
But with some many ‘reports’ we’ll just have to wait until the start of the season to see who will wear the black and white stripes.
In a perverse way i’ll be glad when the championships are over and Newcastle can get the ball rolling over matters which do interest us.

Comment #17Engelaar isn’t a DM, he’s an AM as he used to be a ST. He scored a fair few goals for FC Twente!

Comment #18Engelaar is signing for Shalcke so that looks a non starter.
All the rest are made up as far as I am concerned. I can’t imagine we would inform the press or any of the numerous bloggers who espouse half of the rumours.
When Keegan was here last all the transfers were out of the blue, Shearer, Ferdinand, selling Andy Cole etc.

Comment #19The Schalke deal isn’t completed yet, as one component of the transfer has been agreed in principle but the rest hasn’t. There’s still time!

Comment #20yeah engelaar is an AM not DM, but wud certainly add a bit of beef to our midfield.
If turans price is up to 16mil then we only have ourselves to blame, tight arse goin in with a 9mil bid, if he had went in with 13mil we cud hav had it wrapped up b4 euros, maybe if fat ash has to end up paying 16mil hell loosin the purse strings in future and not go in with tight arse bids

Comment #24Why spend significant money on a 27 year old Romanian who plays in the Romanian league and is therefore totally unproven against any sort of quality, when we wouldn’t sign 28 year old established Prem player Richard Dunne on the cheap because he was ‘too old’.
Exactly, because it’s poppycock.
Next, please.

Comment #26Seymour Butts, it was originally reported by The Times, not Tribal Football.
I find the story fully believable, because that was clearly Galatasaray’s intention from the outset.
