It’s good to hear that local boy Alan Thompson, who played for Newcastle United from 1991 to 1993, will be returning to the club as a coach with the Newcastle Academy.

Thompson has returned to the club to take charge of the Newcastle Academy’s 15 and 16-year-olds, and will also start getting his coaching badges as he sets his heart on a career in coaching.
He knows a lot about Aiden McGeady, who is one of the young stars Newcastle are said to be pursuing this summer, and Alan would love to see Aiden in the famous black and white shirt.
Thompson said yesterday:
“I think Aiden McGeady has more than enough to survive in the Premier League and he would be a great attribute if he comes to the North East.”
“He’s a young lad, but already has umpteen international caps and you don’t get that at his age unless you’re good enough.”
“I used to joke with him that neither of us was any good in the air, but he’s strong on his left or right foot and he’s willing to learn.â€
Being able to use either foot is good because presumably he will be able to play on either wing.

Sunderland of course are after the player, who was born in Glasgow of Scottish parents, but plays for Ireland. Those of you who are regular readers of the site will know why that is the case. 
Anyway, we’d like to welcome Alan Thompson back to the club, as it’s always good to have local lads returning after they have finished their careers.
Alan was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1973, and initially played for his local club.
But when he was just 20 years old he was sold by Kevin Keegan to Bolton Wanderers, for whom he played 157 times and scored 37 goals.
Alan went onto Aston Villa from Bolton in 1998, where he played 46 times with 4 goals and then played for Celtic from 2000-2007. He played for the Scottish Giants a total of 158 times scoring 37 times.
The 34-year-old Thompson will take an official coaching role, looking after the youngsters at the Newcastle Academy.

I always liked him,especially his rocket of a shot.As i mentioned before in my previous posts,i would love if Godsmark will be given a chance to shine in Newcastle.

Great news. I’m sorry he didn’t play longer for Newcastle, because he was such an inspired leader at Celtic.
