Former Newcastle United defender, John Beresford, has talked to the Evening Chronicle today about our young Spanish left-back Jose Enrique.

Joe Enrique - showed a great attitude last season
The young 22 year-old established himself at left-back under Kevin Keegan, and he seemed to be improving nicely, and put in some solid performances towards the end of last season.
He will admit he still has a lot to learn, but we think his attitude in his first season out of Spain, has been first class, for one so young.
Beresford told the Evening Chronicle today:
“I don’t think we have seen the best of Jose Enrique, but let’s hope we do right from the off next season.â€
“Obviously, as a left-back myself I have watched him closely and there is a lot of talent there.â€
“But I think at times he has been trying too hard and he should learn to relax a bit more, but there is clearly more to come from him.â€
“To be fair, he came into a side which seemed a bit low in confidence and that did not help him.â€
“And he would not be happy when United played Charles N’Zogbia, who is really a midfielder, in his position at left-back.â€
“But without being disrespectful to Charles, who I really rate as a midfielder, I think Jose Enrique is a far better left-back.â€
“What I would like to see is for Kevin Keegan to go out and buy a left-back to give Jose Enrique some competition; because I am convinced he will thrive on it.â€
“But he must be really looking forward to the new season. He has a season under his belt and he’s not a new lad on the block any more so it is up to him to show us what he can do.â€
“There is a big prize out there waiting for Jose Enrique and it is up to him to claim it.â€
Good words from John, and Jose can benefit from them.
And since Charles was mentioned by John, no news is good news as far as the young Frenchman is concerned, and we hope he will stay at Newcastle for a few years to come.
We like Jose and think he can do really well for Kevin, he just needs that little bit of time to get fully acclimatized to England and to the Premier league.
Once he has done that he could be a great left-back for us - we hope so in any case.
Comments welcome.

Has come back really well after fat sam dented the lads confidence! is a good player but i still think we need to get shorey in! he has the experience to help jose become a better player & jose has the drive to make nicky work harder & play better for the spot! it would give us different options for the left side when playing teams with serious threats on their right, like man u (if Ron stays). Comon MA £3.5m for England international is peanuts!

Beresford seems to comment on Enrique every few weeks.
5 Zhun // Jun 21, 2008 at 16:40
Still cofusing that sam left him at the starting line up

Ed - Regarding the contact you have with members of the club, do they ever give you information about things such as transfer targets or goings on?
Like you said earlier, you were impressed by what you have heard from them - In what ways?
By all means you don’t have to share that with anyone but it would be interesting to hear a bit about how our club has been doing since the end of the season. As you stated earlier, us fans are the customers of this club so therefore i think it would be nice to get a bit of an insight to how things are going?
Obviously you don’t have to say anything, but as i said i am quite interested in what you said earlier.
7 Ed Harrison // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:27
Tommy - i’ve been impressed because they are very interested to hear what the fans think. It’s been more from a fan interface - that I’ve been involved, that’s all. And Kevin hasn’t asked me which players to sign
8 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:27
good player and will be better next season
9 Bucks_mag // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:28
me gusta mucho el toro
10 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:30
Ed - Lets hope they dont tak your stance on Chimbonda, no offence but 99% of us disagree with you on that matter
11 tommyy // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:33
Ed - Well it’s good to hear that the club are willing to listen to the fans, and are contacting you rather than just visiting the site. I do like the way the new set-up seems to be much more fan orientated, which can only be a good thing in my eyes.
Lol now that surprises me :p , but its nice to know the club at least knows abit about the type of players us fans would like to see at the club, and hopefully we as a group can make an impact on this summers transfers.
Also could you send me a link to the article in which Chris Mort commented if possible?
12 daiv // Jun 21, 2008 at 19:11
We can all rest easy in out beds. Dennis Wise is in charge of signings. Thats why we’ve signed nobody. Thank God the King is back from his hols.

toon king got to be holland put a 5pound bet on them to win the euros!
Enrique is shocking!!!! the only reason why the pundits and the ex players are saying he is god is because they are trying to give him confidance no body would be saying anything if he was actually any good e.g. beye. Trust me enrique wouldnt make the carlisle team!
17 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 19:58
bob marley your talking nonsense. enrique done very well last season considering he is young, doesn’t speak english and came into an awful defence and all round team

Take it you’ve seen a lot of Dinamo Moscow games Tom? Have you shite.
36 Spiro // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:24
i was one of the few on here to doubt arshavin, i marked him as a decent player but nothing more, fact of the matter is he is world class and should have been signed in january, signing arshavin would completely make losing out to modric worth while for me, doubt we will though, too good now
37 Have you ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:24
Arshavin is bad diver. Not in the sense that they are the most obvious dive ever but he dives at every opportunity. Not the kind of thing that would be good for our team. Hope it is Hiddink’s tactics. He might reprieve himself if he scores the free kicks when he dives for them.
38 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:24
Nope, on the basis of this tournament he is a crap defender.
I take it neither have you seen much of Dynamo, so how can you suggest him? On a few shots?!?!?
39 tam toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:25
Not very good for Scotland Dave.

57 Have you ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:36
Anyone think Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia would be good signings? They are canny little players and wouldn’t cost much. Anyone got some suggestions on who we could sign for the RM spot since it seems Milner is leaving and we don’t have a out and out RM apart from him. Spurs want Podolski I mean why don’t we go for players like him. Man City got Petrov and Elano so why wouldn’t we be able to get players of a high standard.
58 Spiro // Jun 21, 2008 at 20:37
palacios and valencia would both be good signings, especially valencia

you cant be offside on a throw in! good sense by arshavin, but that was some holy dutch defending. Who would have thought that would be their undoing?
Hes playing out of our range unless we throw gobs of money his/zenits way. Goodbye.

i think tonight is the night for me to genuinly just stop considering us potentially signing arshavin. lets be honest, its not happening, he’s world class. i think now is the moment i have to let it go sadly.

he’s brilliant. russia as a team look brilliant, but arshavin is their engine, he creates everything. i can see him at one of the best teams in the world come next season.

I have now watched Arshavin in 7-8 games, and I can honestly say he is outstanding and worth far more than Turan or Modric. 16Mil would be good value.
He is the heartbeat of this very talented side.
I am also very impressed by there left back, (Jerkoff) who Tom Toon likes but at LB not as a LW.
The GK Akinfeev looks brilliant too.
And there striker was superb as well. Those four stood out for me and look class.

I dont often go off the handle about who we get or dont get, but when I am starting to look at Boro and some of their latest in transfers like Tuncay and Alves and I like those better than anything we have brought in except Beye, it does start to concern me. I know the window hasnt officially opened, but that hasnt seemed to stop other people making moves. Is the new group too trigger shy? Lowball too much? or do people just use us as a springboard to jack up their transer fee until someone bigger and more “competition” friendly. Maybe we could join the SPL and win that every year and go
