We reported this story last Thursday, thanks to information from one of our readers, Alan Devon, but now Sky Sports is reporting our interest in FC Twente 6′6″ midfielder Orlando Engelaar.

Orlando Engelaar - FC Schalke close to a deal?
The update seems to be that German side, FC Schalke, are now close to completing a deal with the midfielder, and if Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, are really interested in the player, they will need to move fast.
Speaking exclusively to Skysports, Engelaar’s agent, Eduard Burleson, admitted talks with Schalke are already fairly advanced:
“We have spoken with Schalke and terms have been agreed,”
“But the two clubs have not agreed yet, and so that is where we stand on that.”
But Burleson said that interest from a number of Premier clubs was also increasing, with Everton and Newcastle said to be the main two English clubs involved.
Burleson continued:
“I know Everton are interested and that Newcastle could soon make a move,”
“He chose to speak to Schalke, firstly because there was not any interest from England at the time.”
“And also because of the coach Fred Rutten, the former Twener coach now at Schalke, who was so good for him at Twente.”
“But if it does not work, it is now clear could be English options.”
Engelaar has so far played every game for Holland in the Euro 2008 tournament, which is turning into a classic.
He is expected to start again tonight against Russia, in the quarter-finals, so Newcastle fans will get another chance to check him out.
This game promises to be another great game, given the way Russia took Sweden apart earlier this week.
Burleson added:
“Orlando has taken his form from Twente straight into the national side and continued at the same level,”
“I think for this reason a number of clubs have suddenly realized what many of us already knew, that he is a very good player.”
The 28 year old has played for Holland 8 times, since making his debut last year, and has played for FC Twente 56 times since 2006, with 8 goals.
Comments welcome.

He is good, would be great for us, but the price is excessive for a 28 yr old unproven prem player.

No wonder he’s trying to get away, with Mike Baldwin coming in!
Unfortunately, having one 6′6″ player in the middle doesn’t change the fact that the players we have and continue to be linked with (Arda Turan, Arshavin, Shorey, McGeady etc.) make us a ‘vertically challenged’ team. If this lad’s extra height could be shared out around the pitch, he’d be worth considering.
But its not.

This isn’t even a story from a reader - it’s a direct lift from the appalling newcastle-mad website.
“Ed†mate - your “stories†are blatant attempts to drive up traffic to the site in order to mug daft advertisers out of their cash.
“We†think most of the time you’re talking/writing cobblers.
However, if you’re going to reporting everything ….. told tell anyone I told you…… but I saw Arshavin’s lass (with the girlfriend of that blond Russian striker with the long name) in Homebase on Team Valley yesterday looking at curtain material and plant pots. A sure sign they’ve already signed
————————————
Maybe now is a good time to apologise for your comments regarding the Editor of this site Chris? Especialy since it was me who wrote the article for ‘the appaling’ newcastleMAD.
Yes I write for several sites and yes I AM actualy a reader of this site too.

he would be a class signing been very impresses with him at the euros and also last season, he has been playing dm for holland but i thought he was more of a attack minded midfielder.
also did u guys hear ex sunderland gk and gk coach tim carter was found dead in bushes in manchester, its on bbc football website

Oh dear, the usual dour rumours and stories today…no substantial offers from us on the table for the players we’d like, vague talk of one or two of our best players leaving, not sure what to do about Barton etc.
The situation should surely be pretty simple: put in two or three offers for the best players we want (e.g - 12M for Arshavin, 7M for Samba) and take things from there.
I did love the Times article though, and that all makes sense. Even if we only bought 5 great youngsters (but ideally 19 and 20 so as to be ready for the first team squad) and no one else that’d be fine, so long as keep what we have.
Just no offers for very average players please.
9 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 13:53
Just for the record too, Lampard, Gerrard, Ballack and Gareth Barry are all around the same age as Engelaar.
As a die-hard Toon fan why would I want a crap player to sign for us?
He is a very very good player and would definately be a good signing for us. He’s not the attacking player we need but he can play DM,CM,AM and striker which is why I feel he would be a very good capture for us.
10 Ally // Jun 21, 2008 at 13:56
i agree with u dev, having seen this lad for holland a couple of times he looks top class, strutts around the park as if he owns it! hopefully something can happen in the next couple of days regarding him

oh well seemingly another one bites the dust…
or does it, as i said in another article, newcastle had picked out arda arshavin etc… before they were on the lips of those reporters and pundits…
i just hope that we are going to do the same a couple more times and pick some players we dont really know who are able to do things such as arshavin and arda…
and as ive read alot of people didnt know of arda turan so there is hope for us bringing players in
lets all hold hands and sing cum by ya my lord
and pray that something is brewing

Well I can uderstand people not being sure because he is quite new to the national team set-up over here but I see a lot of his games and the Dutch equivelant to MOTD.
He plays very similar to Zidane but without the circus tricks. Simple and acurate passing and keeps possesion better than anyone we have in our team now. He keeps everything simple and and can play in several positions but for me his biggest asset is his composure in tight situations…he can have 3 or 4 players around him but he still keeps posession or plays a perfect pass.
He doesn’t score many goals but that’s not his game. It’s due to the fact he is such a simple player that he doesn’t get much press coverage.
14 Ally // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:02
how much could we get him for dev?
15 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:03
just watch the game tonight and watch how composed he is when pressured. He is very calm and hardly ever loses the ball.
Every team needs one or 2 midfielders like that, diciplined and more than happy to be a provider than a striker.
16 tommyy // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:04
Dev - Do you know who wrote that little bit about the Mr Kippling survey thing on Newcastle-MAD?.
17 Tom4Nufc // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:06
8m has been quoted, I still feel this is too much, he has quality, isnt proven in Premiership, and Ashley wont pay this, though I hope I am wrong,
Btw Dev, you well and truly showed Chris up there… Good job, anyone who doubts this sites creditability is a mug.
18 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:06
I’ve heard 10m Euro’s but Schalke only agreed 4.3m Euro so that price is probably went up due to more interest. It is common knowledge over here that he wants to move to the Premier League and only began talks with Schalke when it looked doubtful he’s get a move to England.
The Schalke deal is far from close though because so far they have not submitted a bid and have just signed Jefferson Farfan. So it’s still very plausable that he will end up in England now that there is firm interest.
19 Ally // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:07
jefferson farfan has signed for Schalke so i dont know where that leaves them with the Engelaar situation, there cud maybe be an opportunity to get him!
20 Ally // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:09
whats the latest on van der vaart dev is he still happy at hamburg or does he want to move on? is that just a non starter where we are concerned
21 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:12
Tommy,
nah mate, that kipling shit aint nowt to do with me. I don’t write exclusively for nufcMAD, I write for different sites and just football. But I’m a Toon fan through and through so I promise you all that whatever news comes from me is genuine stuff I’m hearing over here.
I’m actualy trying to get an interview with McClaren as Twente isnt far from me so if I get that I’ll defo have some news on Engelaar. Spoke to the club yesterday but I’m waiting for a call back from their press dept.
There will always be doubters, I once got subjected to loads of abuse for reporting Toons interest in Dirk Kuyt….and even after Newcastle confirmed it those same people were not big enough to apologise to me but thats what some people are like.
Like I say, I wouldnt ever bullshit about Toon. Why would I want to do that?
22 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:15
van der Vaart is 100% moving this summer and Toon have been mentioned but if I’m honest I think he will end up at Liverpool to replace Harry Kewell, that’s just a hunch though.
Reports here mention Chelsea, Man City, Toon, AC Milan, Ajax and Werder Bremen but he has indicated he would prefer England so there is a chance if Mike Ashley will loosen the purse strings…you lot wil be the first to know if I hear anything though.

Ed just out of curiosity and I don’t expect names, but who from the club actually read or comment on the blog. I am certain you will know, as with Chris Mort recently you will see their e-mail addresses.
A simple answer would satisfy me in the following form.
Could you say if it is A, B or C from the following.
A. Players. B. Management. C. Players and Management.
I’m sure it would be of interest to my fellow bloggers to know if their comments are being followed at the club.

Does anyone know any more about Digard? Someone sent in a link about NUFC being in pole position to get him from a French site.
33 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:48
Either that or the people who patrol the town centre asking people to do the survey deliberately stayed clear of Sunderland for fear of having their pens and clipboards nicked by local bag heads.
34 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:50
Digard sounds like a bit of a trouble maker and I’m not sure he even is a target. Would be good to get someone living in France to give us the gen on him though as I’ve not really heard much about him myself.
35 tommyy // Jun 21, 2008 at 14:56

Tommyy it was about two weeks ago, he posted a comment (and Ed assured us it was kosher) before he stepped down as chairman, saying for up to date accurate transfer news we should go to the official Newcastle web site. I think that they were getting upset that Ed was getting more hits than them. It’s also why I reckon they closely follow this site. Please correct me if I am wrong Ed.
38 Matthew // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:00
Newcastlemad is possibly the worst Newcastle site out there, the amount of shite they put on newsnow with misleading headlines just to get the traffic is crazy.
“Newcastle confirm Arsenal interest over Given!” is the sort of headline they come out with only when you read the article there’s nothing of the sort being said, like I said just a con to get their traffic up.
I’m not passing comment on your articles Dev (unless you wrote the one about Given) but even if you do write good ones there are plenty of people who won’t read them because they’re not prepared to search through the majority of crap on that site.
If your articles are any good then get them up on Newcastle-Online as they’re struggling for writers as their forum is so popular, not only is it a far more respected site but it’s one of the fanzine sites that has a close relationship with the club as do .com and the mag.
As for this site, sometimes things do get posted which is more gossip than fact but most people are happy to discuss it, the only down side is there isn’t a quote feature but apart from that it’s a good site.
39 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:01
DOES ANYONE THINK WE SHOULD HAVE KEPT SCOTTY PARKER, I DO, ITS EXACTLY ONE OF THE KIND OF PLAYERS WE ARE LOOKING AT ATM
40 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:08
No I never wrote about Given mate. I’m in Holland so I’m probably more out of touch with home-based players than you.
Most of my articles are either general stuff or news I’m getting in Holland. I work near the German and Belgium borders so a lot of my work mates are either Germans or Belgians but there is also zillions of Turks here too.
I get my stories from numerous sources including Dutch radio, Dutch fans forums or word of mouth but normaly what I write comes out in the English press within weeks.
I knew about Toons interest in Dirk Kuyt long before the club admitted it and until they did admit it nobody really knew who he was so I was accused of talking shit. But just like van der Vaart and Engelaar these stories were reported by Skysports not long after I reported it.
Like I’ve said before, I’ve no intention of speading unfounded rumours, I’m a Toon fan so the last thing I would do is mislead my own fellow supporters.
41 seetow // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:09
nah scott parker wouldn’t have been good for us, he is a player that is neither here nor there. competent at defending, a little awkward when attacking, but never good at either, he is not the kind of player you would want to move forward with.
he’s done and dusted and moved over to newcastle reserves united in the heart of london.
42 Matthew // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:09
Scott Parker was awful.
43 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:14
I send my articles to loads of sites, Dutch sites too but Newcastle-Online know me so they can contact me should they want to be on my mailing list.
I’ve wrote for them in the past and they are good lads but I will write for any Toon sites and would never say any of them are shite. Sure some of them are better set out than others and sometimes there are crap articles on all of them but you have to give people credit for using their time to make a site and maintaining it for use by fellow supporters. It’s just disrespectfull to mock people who are in your own camp at the end of the day.
The more Toon sites the better I say and these sites only get better through experience and time.
And for those who would rather have no rumours and speculation, really nobody forces them to read them.
I think it’s great that some people use their own time and in some cases finances to inform fans of news and give a little bit of entertainment. Good or bad, at least these people try.
44 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:32
Whilst I am a reader of both .com and newcastle online and have even written for online before, I find the problem with these fanzine sites is that evrything is screened to meet the clubs demands.
Whilst some may feel there is too much negativity regarding Mike Ashley, unfortunately there are still concerns and until he starts spending some cash it’s a bit unfair to reject articles of this nature.
.Com is a great site and most would agree but they rarely touch a raw nerve as far as the club is concerned. Sometimes these questions need asking.
Whilst I can’t deny that some of the headlines from nufcMAD are misleading, they are not all misleading and it’s good to get a diverse take on things.
45 jordi // Jun 21, 2008 at 16:21
Sounds like his agent is angling for a big money move to the Premiership to line his coffers.
They’ve agreed terms before the teams have agreed a move. Is that how it’s supposed to work? I thought it was the other way round…
Now to sit back and wait for an English team to offer more money. I guess he wins either way.
It’s his job I suppose but that doesn’t stop me despising the little parasite…
46 Ed Harrison // Jun 21, 2008 at 16:24
Yes - Chris Mort did leave a comment on here, and I have had some offline contact with the club, and have been most impressed quite honestly.
What Chris said was relevant because he said any transfer is only official when it’s on nufc.co.uk - and we agree with that completely, that’s true, and we think the new official site is great.
I do know that employees at the Newcastle club read this web-site (and many of the others too I would suspect), and from my contacts with the new regime, they are very very interested with what the fans think.
That’s why Mort did so well just before he left by getting a deal for the kids etc etc.
The fans are the customers of the club - and when I was at IBM we were taught that customers were god.
So go work that one out.
47 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 16:45
Thing is Ed, Fat Fred always said the same thing…official news is only on nufc.co.uk but that doesn’t mean he can control other aspects of the media.
Look at the amount of news coming from ‘A Newcastle Insider’….that always comes from London and the Ronnie Gill not .co.uk.
Whilst I’m sure Morty wants us all to only use the official site it can’t be forced upon us and he shouldn’t be trying to crack the whip with the unofficial Toon sites.
Yes maybe he is trying to end all the speculation but he can’t control the tabloids so he shouldn’t think he can influence other independent sites.
Specualtion about transfers comes with every single club and whilst all the clubs would prefer people used only the official sites, fans have the right to read whatever they want, where they want.
Maybe Mort and the other top brass at Toon should be controlling the mouths of some of these so-called insiders who have so far revealed details of the Keegan/Ashley meeting in England and the plans of Ashley to cut costs by offering players half the money they are on and making them buy their own suits.
Whilst plans like these are sensible in financial terms they are A: not totaly achievable given that we are supposed to be aiming for the top 8 of the best league in the world and players, like it or not, do demand high wages.
And B: None of this news was on the official site. Instead it was released from ‘our’ London office.
I think most of the work Mort has done has been very very good and a breath of fresh air but he should not be contacting unofficial sites and shouting the odds at all.
Maybe if they actualy put more interesting stuff on the official site it would be worth reading but I have to be honest and say I NEVER look on the official site for transfer developments as there is no point. The tabloids tend to report these things weeks before the official site does.
Like I say, all respect for Mort and his willingness to listen to fans but I do not agree with him contacting unofficial sites in any advisory role.
That is the beauty of independence and too many of the unofficial Toon sites have been influenced in this way in my own opinion.

“DON’T want”

Joe Cole
Dean Ashton
Andre Arhavin
Nicky Shorey
Tal Ben Haim and PSV’s left centre-back Carlos Salcido
50 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:13
Id go with that except for Ben Haim because he is shockingly bad.
No chance in Joe Cole and very little in Arshavin though.

Holy shit 6′6 thats almost Crouchie like. And stop with the age’s, everyone’s crazy about Arshavin and he’s already 27…..Engelaar’s only a year older. If its’s really a concern y would Newcastle be so interested in Arshavin? VdV’s already 26. So lol y aren’t we going after younger players? (Other than Turan)
53 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:31

I really wouldnt mind Kitson.
Put it this way, who do you want to come of the the bench to replce Viduka next season?
Smith - No chance of scoring and will probably give away 10 free kicks and get a yellow card.
Kitson - Quite a good impact sub with a decent chance of scoring.
58 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:54
Kitson no way man, if we buy a striker we need a big man with good strength and the abilty to play Oba and Owen in like Viduka does….I don’t rate Kitson at all and think even Heskey would be a better buy than him.
59 Dev // Jun 21, 2008 at 17:57
to be fair tom tom, Ben Haim has been left out for most of last season and it’s no coincidence that soon after he left Bolton they slid towards relegation. The lad is a good solid defender and knows the Premier League. Buying defenders from abroad is always a risk as we have seen with Cacapa, Rozenhal, Boumsong etc.
I think Ben Haim would be a very good player for us but of course it’s only my own opinion.
60 neville brewis // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:04
I once went to Sunderland, and I bought a new garden spade from Joplings. I got in the lift with it , but it got stuck in the doors. A young chap on the other side shouted he would help. I pushed the lift button to open the doors, and he ran off with my spade!
It had a joplings bag on the blade. I have never been back to Sunderland since.
61 Piers // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:05
I got the impression that Carroll will be replacing Viduka next year. I certainly don’t want Smith. Yeah, your right Smith’s temper surpasses his football skills. For some reason Keegan has always backed Smith’s play. As far as Kitson, i don’t know too much about him. Going back to VDV…..yeah that would be the dream signing but its most unlikely that we are going to attract a player of that caliber to the Tyneside. So with that being said, don’t we need to get interested in younger and really not as well proven players?
62 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:07
Yes we do, but thats the grand plan pparently.
I agree there is no hope in hell of us getting VDV.
Carrol really doesnt look like he can make the grade.
63 Piers // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:15
Dev….I agree with the Ben Haim assessment. He’s a solid defender.
It’s still very surprising to me that someone like Rozenhal started for the Czech Republic. Your right, you never know with international players.
64 natedawg // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:23
for once i agree with tt carrol aint gonna make the grade hasnt progressed at all last season. might get roasted for this but wouldnt say no to hesky possible loan deal would be cool. or straight swap for smith. wa bout yakubu not my faveroutie player but could do a job and if we offer them smith and 4 mill they might take it? also is he nigerian ? might link up with oba well
65 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:25
Why the hell would Everton give us Yakubu who they paid 12mil for last summer for Smith and 4 mil, let alone why would he join us. Everton are far better than us and in europe.
Smith aint worth 500k.
66 Piers // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:29

73 Tom_Toon // Jun 21, 2008 at 18:49
In the premiership?
Possibles: Not Carew etc who have european football and are first teamers.
Bendtner
Santa Cruz (unlikely)

Heskey links well with Owen is all i know about Heskey. And he doesn’t score very often but more than Smith.

santa cruz would be excellent but dont think it will happen. either. who do you reckon we will get ? i think gomis might happen but iam not a big fan, just seems a lot of hype

No clue. I am a fan of Chamakh who last heard his price quoted was about £4mil.

Bendnter on loan would be a good deal for us. Big player who can hold the ball up and score. The thing is when these players are 20+ they will be on the Arsenal bench instead of playing Cup Games. Worth a punt though.

Santa Cruz is a very good player….doubt Blackburn would let him go. We have to start looking outside the premiership to actually get somewhere.

Everyone else lists players they would go for on here so I will too.
My List of Transfer Targets:
1. Dean Ashton (To replace Viduka)
2. Arda Turan (Plays on both wings and replace Duff)
3. Wayne Bridge (Competition for Enrique)
4. Jimmy Bullard (Replace the Jailbird)
5. Andrei Arshavin (For the RM spot)
6. Few loan signings (To cover for injuries etc)
Everyone also does some outrageous possible signings so mine is Iker Casillas.
81 natedawg // Jun 21, 2008 at 19:02
dame that is an imaginative list.
realisticly i can see us getting
lennon
cuellar
shorey
n i reckon we might pull one or two out the bag plus a bunch of young guns

I like yours Milan, but Casillas is a bit overrated. I would love to get Villa if only we could…….
83 Have you ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jun 21, 2008 at 19:46
Casillas wasn’t a serious signing it was one of the ones that we don’t have chance with because everyone else does them
. Go for Ronaldinho. I wish.
