Newcastle Pursue Turkey’s Servet Cetin

The Sunday Sun is reporting that Turkish sources are saying Newcastle are interested in one of Arda Turan’s team mates at Galatasaray.

servet-cetin-5.jpg

Servet Cetin – familiar player for Turkey at Euro 2008

The player we are reported to be interested in is Servet Cetin, who is 27 years old, and plays at center-back for Galatasaray and Turkey.

Servet has played for a whole host of teams in Turkey, and joined Galatasaray in 2007.

He’s now played for the Turkish powerhouse club 59 times with 3 goals, and has played 25 times for Turkey with 1 goal, and has been featured in Turkey’s amazing streak at Euro 2008.

Servet started all the group games for Turkey against Portugal, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, but was suspended for the amazing quarter-final win against Croatia.

But he should be back in the team for the semi-final tie against Germany on Wednesday in Basel. The Turkish sources are saying Newcastle will bid around £4.7M for the defender, but that seems high to us.

From 2002-2003 he played 17 times for the Turkey Under-21 side, so has been a top Turkish defender for a number of years and has ample experience at international and European level.

However, at the start of his Galatasaray career, he was heavily criticized for making critical mistakes on the pitch.

He is an excellent header of the ball at 6’3″, and wins almost every ball in the air, but is said to be susceptible with one-on-ones, especially against fast players.

However, since last year he is said to have improved that part of his game immensely, and has become a favorite of the Galatasaray fans, for his tough solid play and never-say-die attitude.

However, if he is too slow, there are many players in the PL who could exploit that weakness.

Certainly he has looked a powerful player while playing for Turkey at Euro 2008.

Somebody to watch on Wednesday, and we’ll just have to wait and see if he is a real target for Newcastle, but we do expect some moves to be made this week, after Kevin’s arrival back from holiday.

Let us know what you think.

Andrei Arshavin’s the hot rod heart of the Russian engine and the A class playmaker to add the sparkle sorely lacking in NUFC. What more is there to say if we miss out on this catch? Robert Acquafresca, Marouane Chamakh, Pablo Aimar??? CB Servet Cetin??? Please be serious! A class playmaker should be our TOP PRIORITY!

looks decent, nowhere near as good as steven 1979 is suggesting, but better than wat we have, and at anyhting under 5mil for a player these days is peanuts anyway so not much of a risk

To be honest he did catch my eye in the Euros, he seem strong and reliable.

But we shouldn’t sign him just on those performances.

Yes he has been good in the Euros but i hope there would have been further research and scouting before we pursure him.

tbh where apparently bidding for all these players but nothing is happening which leads me to believe we really arent.

ad actually like to see some firm bids made soon or else wer gonna be in trouble nxt season for sure. we had a small squad which has thn got even smaller after sellin players who admittadly were right to be sold.. nd yet we are still linked with more departures. we need quality signings or mid table is a certainty agen nxt season.

Anyone that wrangles with bears is a good defender in my book.

Ed – He wasn’t suspended for the quarter finals. He finally gave into his numerous injuries after the group stage and Fatih Terim said “he wants to keep playing even though he’s injured badly on every spot almost, but I have no right to risk someone’s footballing career for just 1-2 matches. Servet won’t play till he recovers”. It’s highly unlikely he’s going to play against Germany. Rather funny but we only have 14 players available against Germany…

I said he’s the best defender Turkey has because he’s the ONLY one we got. The other ‘defenders’ aren’t defenders. They’re just dummies taking up space on the field hoping for a chance that the ball might ricochet off of them at times so they can put pressure on forwards.

Some of ya might not rate him. I’ve said the likes of Mehmet Topal or Nuri Sahin could have been overrated a bit, they’re not bad but they ain’t ‘star’ players. I can’t say the same for Servet. This guy’s a real trooper and I would defo rate him. He got voted the fans’ favorite for this year. Quality defender and he goes up front in set pieces causing huge pressure to the opposition and even make assists/score some. Your chances of getting him? I’d say you have a better chance of getting Arda. (I highly doubt he got 11 brothers. 11 relatives maybe.) He ain’t easy to beat either, even by fast players cuz he improved himself so much. He did a great job in marking throughout the tournament as well (he put good pressure on Koller, that goal was cuz of Volkan’s mistake. Servet did his job)

I personally think the Turkish sources are just reporting rubbish. I didn’t even come across this rumour on the better news sites yet.

LOL. All Turkish news sources are reporting on the team’s training camp live right now. They’re confirming the injuries of 3 more players. I was just able to hear Semih’s name so two more on top of Semih that are injured now! One of the news sites even mentioned about pulling out being a possibility cuz UEFA won’t let us call up more players 🙁 F*** lol. We got 11 available players now, one of them being our 3rd keeper!

Well I don’t think it’d go as far as pulling out and those reports are rubbish, they’re showing the whole training session live on tv tho :p Kinda interesting.

i really like him but that’s mainly cause i’m a fan of big animal center backs like Faye and Him, his a good defender and a real trooper, would like him……but..as Arda, he will not leave and the fans will not let him leave.

If KK is going on the EUROs then he should sign Ignasevich. He missed the first game where Russia were torn apart BY Spain and was very good in the matches he has played. I think we’d be able to get him for around £6m at the most. We should get Zhirkov, Arshavin, Arda Turan, Moutinho, Aimar, sell Smith, Duff, Cacpa etc., sign up a few youngsters and then we’re done!

As I said before, Magnus Hedman, who know him a bit for some reason said during Turkeys second game, for no reason realy, that he is a top defender who played his whole carrer in Turkey and will never leave because of his 11 brothers…

GS fan, he has 10 brothers, he is 11th.. He tells this to GS’s official site.. There is an interview over there.. You should read it, it’s fun..
He is afraid of mice too 😀
When I laugh at this they give me the elephant example… whatever..
he is so injured(there is a too injured to play limit for him) and we need him so much.. puffsss…
I think Semih and the other two injuries news is not true… I mean, come on, it’s not written anywhere and if it’s true we’re totally dead :S

And Arda…. I think the best i can do is to convince you that he isn’t that good, showing Croatia match.. Come on, don’t get him.. The Gs fans are crazy about him…

i have always liked the idea of having two players from a different country in the squad. A lot of foriegn clubs do this as it helps the players settle better.
Remember the days of AC Milan who had the 3 Dutch or Inter having numerous South Americans.

So Sevet and Turan sounds good to me

Obviously dont buy players for the sake of it just so they can have a buddy. But if a compatriant is a possible signing why not. I can think of 2 -3 Russians i’d like.
