We wonder if Newcastle United have already made the deal for 24 year-old Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh.

Marouane Chamakh - have we signed him?
We had an article out this morning that the Sunday Sun were reporting that Newcastle were interested in the player.
Now on his wikipedia site there is information that says he has just signed a 3 year deal with the club today, and that the Newcastle club will unveil him on July 1st.
Of course, we are well aware that Wikipedia is not too reliable, and it’s fairly easy to update the site, but it just seems odd that this would happen today.
Maybe somebody is just playing the fool - but we’ll see.
One of our readers - Nick C - is also reporting that in the Le Parisien newspaper in Paris, and the Sud Ouest paper in Bordeaux today, they are reporting it’s a done deal.
If we have signed him, let’s hope he turns out to be another Roque Santa Cruz, who scored 19 times for Blackburn in just 36 appearances for them last season, and he cost Blackburn just £3.5M last summer from Bayern Munich.
At Bayern, Santa Cruz scored 31 goals in 155 games, (0.2 goals/game) and for Bordeaux, Chamakh has scored 42 goals in 182 appearances for them, (0.23 goals/game), as some of our readers have already pointed out.
A similar striking rate - so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.Â
Here is our article today on the player, and also here is a youtube piece on him.
Comments welcome.

I dunno anything about him - what’s he like?
4 toon4life // Jun 22, 2008 at 18:58
id be quite happy if we pulled this one off..
would be a good start and hopefully we can get him fairly cheap.
perfect foil for owen and martins with his target man attributes and has bags of potential.
with keegans man management skills could turn out to be a great deal IF it happens.

This may be a decent deal for us after all.

I really don’t know anything about him. Who’s he ? Just surprise. I wonder who made the deal. Keegan or Wise ?
8 simon winham // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:09
i hope we have signed chamakh it will be a good signing and we should get aimar to.
9 richie // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:10
is he any good ??whats he like
10 toon4life // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:13
skysports are reporting are interest in aimar now..
for 4mil i think we should be pulling out all the stops for him.. great passer of the ball and could chip in with a number of assists potentially.
4mil is nothing to mike ashley so where’s the risk?
also since arshavin may be out of reach now what do people think of croatia’s ivan rakitic? i’ve followed him for quite a while now and his performances in euro2008 have won him a number of fans i’m sure… he’s also a younger option.

if we had any deals done, they would have said so (they being the club)
mainly because they need that sort of thing to drive season ticket sales/renewals.
it doesn’t make any sense for them to have deals completed, but keep it quiet, as that just makes it look like theyre sat on their arses twiddling their thumbs.
23 reb // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:32
i don’t understand. aren’t we clutching at straws a little?
because santa cruz had a rubbish record for Bayern and did well for Blackburn and chamakh has a rubbish record for Bordeaux does not necessarily mean we have a good player on our hands.
24 Spyro // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:33
i will believe it if/when it is annonced

31 Ross // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:42
agree ChrisF, i dont think the club would sign numerous players, and then keep them under wraps until they hold some sort of unveiling night. surely they know alot of fans are frustrated with the lack of activity, surely it would not be in their best interest to do so.
agree also with you reb, i’ve never seen this boy play, but the german and french leagues are different. however, for me the german league is similar to the prem, hence why maybe santa cruz has been able to find form here.
but who knows, i’m just waiting until the signings have been made and i’ve seen them play before i judge/slag/praise.
32 ToonKing // Jun 22, 2008 at 19:46
if we managed to get him cheap this is quite a coup. He’s more of an assist guy but don’t be fooled he can score. he has amazing talent and is quite young.

For gods sake Ginkoh, your earlier comment on who signed him Keegan or Wise??!!?? (if we have)
Are we gonna have this every time we sign a player? Finally the club are putting in an infastructure so the manager does not have to do all the running around, simply ensure that they are going for the right players! But half the fans must see a conspiracy. Does nobdy think all the other clubs have people like Wise and crew????
42 Ginkoh // Jun 22, 2008 at 20:04
Wikipedia have updated again 5 min ago. I dunno why but
” He has agreed on a three-year deal with Newcastle United Football Club on June 22, 2008 and will be unveiled on July 1, 2008.”
change to
” Chamakh has recently been strongly linked with a move away from France, with Newcastle United apparently leading the chase for the highly sought after forward “
43 JJ // Jun 22, 2008 at 20:07
Living in Africa I watched him for Morocco in the African Cup of Nations.
He looked a very good player to me. So I think he would be good value at that price.
A decent target man who likes to drift to the left and he has a bit of pace and skill about him.
Not world class but a good squad player and good cover for Viduka.
Would be hapy with hat strike force.
Just need to sort out our defence and creative midfield

59 Spyro // Jun 22, 2008 at 20:40
arshavin at barcelona will just annoy me as we had more than enough time to get him here and it will simply highlight how big of an opportunity NUFC has missed yet again (constantly making the wrong decisions), January was our opportunity, but no, instead we made a “calculated gamble”…and LOST!
…however, like people have said on previous posts, if we are annoyed at missing out on talents it at least confirms we have recently been superb in terms of spotting good talent reasonably early. surely this must show mike ashley that he wont be handing his money over to complete numpties.

A lot of players contracts are set up to run up to 30th of june each year. Also financials for a lot of clubs from the same date. Therefore you find most deals are done from the 1st of July, so this could be true. This is a historical fact, but won’t be the rule all the time.

Titus Bramble Wiki
After another poor performance in Newcastle’s 2–0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar he was dropped by Glenn Roeder. He looked to be frozen out of Newcastle, due to the return of Craig Moore and consistency of Steven Taylor and Oguchi Onyewu, and no longer part of Roeder’s plans.
On May 16, 2007, following the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager of Newcastle United, Bramble was told his contract would not be renewed and was immediately released. He was then offered a world record 30 pence a week to play for Wigan and decided it was too good to refuse. Since then Titus has gone from strength to strength making more mistakes per game than ever before.

Aye tom toon pleased you agree, but I was suggesting it may be logical about the date with Chamakh. As a lot of clubs don’t start spending until 1st July. We don’t really know with Ashley about timings of money release. Doubtful I agree with Ashley -but possible not knowing his history.

Kevin Keegan today summoned Dennis Wise to showdown talks after coming to the conclusion he was no good as a scout.
The mysterious ‘Toon Source who is being compared to Top Gear’s Stig told me just now
“Kevin is livid, Wise got lippy so Keegan told him to grow up which just made Dennis even more angry. In the end they came to a compromise and Keegan agreed to let Wise become more involved in training and so is about to be anounced as Dead Ball coach.”
Curiously though, the position is only going to be temporary.

Russian Football Federation president Vitaly Butko claims playmaker Andrei Arshavin has his heart set on a move to Barcelona.
Manchester City, Newcastle, Arsenal and AC Milan are just a few of the clubs reportedly interested in the Zenit St Petersburg star who has impressed at Euro 2008.
However, Butko has revealed Arshavin would shun any offer for the chance to move to the Nou Camp.
“Andrei has a dream to play for Barcelona,” he told Spanish newspaper Sport. “It is, together with the Russian national team, his favourite team.
“He could easily play and show all his quality at Barcelona. Andrei doesn’t have less quality than players like Deco.”
Despite being banned for Russia’s first two games, Arshavin has excelled since then and the playmaker’s scintillating performances have helped his side tear Switzerland apart before securing a victory over Holland.
Victory in the semi-final of Euro 2008 against either Spain or Italy would cap a remarkable season for the 27-year-old, after he helped hometown club Zenit secure the UEFA Cup and the Russian league.
Zenit coach Dick Advocaat has already revealed that Arshavin has told Zenit he wants a move abroad.
“Arshavin has told us his intention is to change clubs,” he said. “And we are already looking for a replacement if his departure is confirmed.”

Shorla - Who is Tolahan?
Do you mean Toulalan? If so he wont go for under £12mil anyway, probably £15mil, not to mention he wouldnt come to us.
123 richie // Jun 22, 2008 at 23:45
tom toon, wats ur prediction for the start of season who u think wel bring in,,,im losing patience and apart from seb larsson , shorey and this morrocan tosser! i cant se us gttin anyone else
124 Oba // Jun 22, 2008 at 23:50
Why is Tom_Toon regarded as the oracle?
125 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:00
himself and spyro were the first 2 i got chattin on this tru the relegation battle so i tend t pose the questions t them
126 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:02
Oba - because he is a black woman.
127 Tom_Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:03
how am I meant to know! But i hope we do sign Chamakh, we need someone to take over from Viduka.
128 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:07
Tom Toon - On a serious note; Boussafa, Turan or N’zogbia for left spot?
129 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:08
im just burnt out thinkin of possible signings t toon lol,, does anyone know wat story is wit barton id love us t keep him
130 Tom_Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:08
N’Zogbia.
131 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:09
boussafa, tbh turan didn impress me that much so far
132 Tom_Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:12
For me Turan is slow and 13mil can be better spent elsewhere (on a CB, DM or AM) and Boussoufa is too small.
133 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:13
I don’t rate Boussafa highly. I would agree on N’zogbia, I like Turan and i think he would be good but as we don’t have him already N’zogbia would be my choice.
134 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:14
i personally would love to see bilyaletdinov come, i rate that guy

Highlights start around 1:15 Enjoy!
136 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:16
I would like to see a good solid DM, if we don’t get one it could prove costly as the season goes on, we really do need one. Anybody you would rate as a realistiv option?
137 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:16
http://www.newcastleutdfc.blogspot.com
how long tha blog been about looks good,, and as for mcgeady id have him over all those wingers uv mentioned he can beat players at ease, d b great signing imo
138 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:17
n’zogbia will improve much quicker if the quality of the rest of the midfielders improved, sometimes it just seems like we rely on him too much to create something out of nothing. we desperately need a DM and RM, i would like to see Milner moved to the middle as he isn’t the fastest or most skillful winger, he is a work horse, and he can shoot with both feet
139 Ross // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:18
richie mcgeady can beat players but he has a tendency not to look up and play the pass at the right time.
he has the same problem as alot of the wingers we’ve been linked with.
he’s quick, he’s skillfull, but he doesnt look up to play the killer pass.
140 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:19
i used to think that richie, until i saw him have a couple of stinkers for celtic and now i dont really rate him too much
141 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:20
dm …possible options off top head
huddlestone
makelele (1yr deal)
boupa diop
regarding youth policy id love us to sign garven from ipswich
142 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:21
i remember n’zogbia against city, he was playing with confidence and drive and he looked an awesome player that night. Or even the last 30mins of the Man U game when he was taking on anyone and everyone in front of him. i just hope we can get him playing to those levels consistently.
143 Piers // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:21
Yeah i agree Spyro….too many stinkers for me
144 Tom_Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:22
Diop? The pompey fans already hate him because he cant pass!
145 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:23
Huddlestone would be good, and i liked the sound of Digard, not to sure on makelele? he is an awesome player, but don’t know how motivated he would be to play.
146 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:25
why oh why are NUFC chasing youth strikers and defenders but not midfielders, do they not see what we need the most?!?
Garven would be a good signing i agree
147 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:26
ross i agree wit u but hes improving that all the time, iv watched him good bit and been at ireland games his skill at beatin aman or two and creating space is jaw dropping,,ronaldo wen he first came to england had bad final pass, these things improve
friend of mine who played wit him irelandu21 level said he was complete coaches dream didn go out wit lads , don think he drinks all about improving ,,,,,,point being hel thrive under keegan, for me he has it all as a winger im convinced
148 Piers // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:26
Diop- Too old as well….need someone who will progress with Zogs
149 Ross // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:28
spyro-because we’re newcastle, and when have the fans ever been happy with whats going on/the club has been running smoothly with goals achieved? lol
but thats the way it is, and we love it none the less, stupid or not!
150 tommyy // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:31
What are the odds on us hearing some good news tomorrow?
151 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:31
agree spyro im most concerned about midfield
152 Gregory // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:36
Boussoufa over Turan or N’Zog, or you f*** kiddin me? Richie -131- have you ever seen him play a full game?
Wouldnt last 5 games in EPL
Chamakh would be decent signing, often seen ‘m play and although his scoring record isnt amazing, he is a good asset to any team
153 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:37
tell the truth, now we wont sign our actual targets i would like us to instead sign 4 or 5 top quality youths, and maybe 3 good quality experienced players to go straight into the first team (ideally 2 midfielders and one CB who can play across the back four)
154 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:39
i agree boussoufa is nothing special, and i said this at the time when we were “interested”. however, i also said Arshavin was good but nothing special so…
lol
155 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:43
maybe he would not , the point i was trying to make is zog and turan for me arent good enough if we really want to finish 5th next season
156 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:49
im excited at the idea of aimar joining, wat ya reckon
also read somewhere recently wigan were pondering a 3mill bid for garven
157 Whitey // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:50
Am i missin a trick cause i dont see anything about Newcastle on his Wikipedia Page
158 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:50
rich we will not have a chance of finishing 5th next season unless we sign around 5 or 6 players who are the same quality as Arshavin…and that just aint going to happen, other teams are way ahead of us in terms of the quality of their squad right now, and the best thing to do is to try and achieve 5th over a three year period. This way we can focus on quality young players who actually want to play for us, there is no pressure to go for the superstars and get ridiculed by the media when they snub us, and we will have a more solid and stable foundation for our club.
i think a realistic target for us next year is top 8
(im trying to be positive here)
159 Spyro // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:54
we should also put a lot of our focus on the carling cup as it will provide us with a back door entrance in to europe. and we have all seen how this has benefitted tottenham this year aint we?
160 richie // Jun 23, 2008 at 0:58
ye id agree, id prefer us to ignore the name players and buy youth and stay away from the pressure and leave that to the likes of spurs,,,,,
but the noise coming out of the club was aspiring for 5th so i was going on that basis
however im wit u on the youth , i dont know if u remember but i mention on blog before about us going for talented youth from championship
161 Cloudstrife // Jun 23, 2008 at 4:45
there’s no problem signing youth but that means there is no chance we will finish fifth next term. it’s some kind of building process. so the most we can hope for is a top 10 finish. i’d take Aimar. he may seem like a mercenary but he’s still young and as long as his wages arent too high, then it could be a good piece of biz if KK can motivate him.
162 The Entertainers // Jun 23, 2008 at 8:10
I wonder if wikipedia is a new advertising tool from players agents…..set a scandal on the net and papers just to get certain moves or contracts or there clients.
As for this lad, i havent a clue! Hope hes as good as the other talent been spotted by Wise.
163 Ian // Jun 23, 2008 at 9:00
I would be happy if they are looking at players who arent always in the press providing they are decent, that is what I would expect when we have added Vetere to the board, we will have to wait and see.
Then of course see if the signings are decent relative to their cost.
164 geordiegraham // Jun 23, 2008 at 9:17

I think a lot of you people need to look up the meaning of the word “Wiki” to see what it means.
166 Micky Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 10:24
Give up all hopes, as if we really had any, of signing Arshavin. Latest is that Abramovich has said “Big Phil” cannot sign Deco as he wants Arshavin and will pay £20m for him.
167 Smith1011 // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:21
Orlando Engelaar
Arda Turan
Chamakh
Pavlyuchenko
Spears
Güiza
Any1 think these are any good for us?
168 Kat // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:38
The comments on Wiki about newcastle signing have been rem0ved completely but if you look at his profile - he is a toon player!
169 Kat // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:38
Wiki now states “Just entered St James Park with his agent and it looked like a body guard”
170 Ed Harrison // Jun 23, 2008 at 13:32
Kat - unbelievable.
171 Harry Worth // Jun 23, 2008 at 14:18
“The comments on Wiki about newcastle signing have been rem0ved completely but if you look at his profile - he is a toon player!”
It has just been edited by the same person with the Saudi Arabian IP address again. Thats all.
Any man and his dog can edit a “Wiki” and put what they like in it. Wiki’s are ultimately worthless because of the abuse they get by people altering facts and putting their own garbage in, as Mr Saudi IP is doing!
172 normski1930z // Jun 23, 2008 at 18:39
Pavlyuchenko, would have him any day of the week, he is alot more mobile and quicker than viduka, afraid to say it but viduka is finished.
173 bbbboooooo // Jun 24, 2008 at 20:56
He’s alright, doesn’t score that much though.
174 Chamakhfan // Jul 12, 2008 at 22:06
I don’t think that Newcastle has signed him yet but if they do, he’ll be one of their best strikers next year, he’s got the speed, he’s got the hight and his heathers are very good and for a 24 year old his doing prety good for his country and club team, good luck Chamakh and Newcastle.
Newcastle should also look out for a great player his name is Soufiane Alloudi, 23 year old plays for Al-Ain but is about to move to Marseille but not yet, for his age his movement with the ball and the way he reads the game is prety good.
