Pre-season training will start at Newcastle United in just two weeks time, yet two of our African players have only just completed last season.
Geremi and Faye – getting a well deserved rest
Newcastle’s Geremi and Abdoulaye Faye were both in World Cup qualifying action on Saturday for their countries, and both were successful.
Geremi played for Cameroon, and had an assist for Samuel Eto’s opener in Cameroon’s 2-1 win over Tanzania.
Faye played for Senegal in their fine win over Liberia by 3-1.
So after 4 games played in their respective groups, both Cameroon and Senegal are at the very top.
The summer holidays can now start for both of them, after a hard season, and we would expect Kevin Keegan to give the boys at least an extra week off, if not two, before they need to report back for next season.
Oba Martins’ Nigeria won their group – one of 12 in Africa World Cup qualification – by beating Equatorial Guinea 2-0. Martins is still nursing an ankle injury and did not play.
We’re not sure if Oba will be fit for the start of our own pre-season training.
Geremi and Faye will need a good rest and some time away from football.
And next season will both be a tough one, and an important one, for the Tyneside club, so they will need to come back fully refreshed and ready to go – once again.
