The Zenit St Petersburg midfielder, who has played wonderfully well in the two games he has played for Russia at Euro 2008, is wanted by many big clubs.

Andrei Arshavin - wants to play in Spain
And the play-maker will now cost big money this summer, if he does decide to leave the UEFA Cup winners, as expected, for a move to a bigger and more high profile club.
The biggest club interested in the long-term Newcastle target is Arsenal, but Andrei has come out today and said he would really like to play in the Spanish league, which he apparently has followed for the last few years.
Newcastle have been tracking the 27-year-old since last year, but his fantastic play at Euro 2008, has attracted a host of other clubs.
But Arshavin has now made it clear that he would actually like a move to Spain’s La Liga, although he says there has been no firm interest so far.
Andrei told AS today:
“I know that I have offers from England and Germany, but what I really want is to play in the Primera Liga,”
“It’s the championship that I have always followed, I like how football is played there.”
“But for now, I have no offers from Spain.”
Sounds to us that may be a veiled call to Real Madrid, Barcelona and others to come and get him.
But it looks like he’s way out of reach for Newcastle now, unfortunately. You win some, you lose some.
But just think if we had signed him before Euro 2008, say for £8M, and he then played like he has been.
There would certainly be a lot of very happy Geordie fans out there right now.
Comments welcome.

stop posting articles about Arshavin Ed, you just make us cringe, he’s out of our league now.
2 Ben_BKK // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:41
Bit delayed, Ed, this story’s been around for a while now
Surprising though, you often get the stories out here way before the site I use…
3 ronaldeano // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:41
There is no point in talking about Arshavin anymore, we wont get him and thats that.
We should be talking about who elce would be a good signing for us
4 cathal // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:45
he’s come and and said today that it’s barca he “dreams” about!
5 The Entertainers // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:46
Asharvin may have signed a pretournamnet contract with us and after the club looking after him and now he knows a top Spanish club wants him hes using the media to break his contrcat with us.
Oh i’ve come over all sympathetic towards Man U…..oh its past….that did last long thankfully.
6 yet_another_indian_toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:51
Another Modric. Sigh.
Cant blame him, I myself would advice him to join a better club.
7 Tom_Toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:52
Delusions of grandeur if anyone thinks we still have any chance.
8 Faustino // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:57
Given that he’s had an amazing tournament and is now out of our reach does that now mean we might have a shot at Gomez? lol or Toni for that matter.
9 Ross // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:02
Arshavin may be out of reach but what about Ronaldihno. If Man City are in talks with him, why arnt we. Even if we could’nt get him it would give us a bit of encouragemnet.
10 Stami // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:03
Why we still goin on about Moderic, im glad we didnt get him, he aint that special! Didnt turn too many heads now did he!!!
11 shearer // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:06
i still tend to think that just because nothing came out in the press, we tried to get him before the tournament but he preferred to wait and put himself in the shop window for a dream move and his club arent desperate for cash so were happy to see how he got on aswell. Therefore, we mightn’t have missed the chance at all as it may simply not have really been there.
Also, are we more of an attractive option than Zenit anyway? other than teh league being high profile, hes on a decent wage already and playing in europe so maybe it was always unlikely!
12 Leo // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:08
stami, be fair, modric did look good in the tournament, for his age, he looked great…
past…
who is next to make us hope make us believe we have no hope then make us loose all hope?
modric ashavin arda
13 yet_another_indian_toon // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:11
Arda will come home… No other big club after him, are they?
14 Arshavin4Toon_NoMore // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:12
let’s forget him, and move on for some younger or lower-profile targets. Turan, Zarate, Chermiti etc. are the ones we should work on now. a few flops of the tournament e.g. Gomez, or those of the removed teams, may worth a look also …
15 ToonKing // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:15
Arda won’t leave Galata…let’s find someone else to hope for now..
16 HeronMag // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:20
Personally I reckon Turan is the player we look most likely to sign. We’ve been strongly linked with him for months now with many quotes coming from Galatasaray confirming that we have actually been in contact. With Aimar’s agent coming out and stating we have enquired about his availability I’m starting to be a little more optimistic.
As for Arshavin, we’ve missed out. He’ll be Ronaldinho’s replacement.
Go on KK, Ronaldinho’s looking for a new club…
(Let me dream

21 HeronMag // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:37
Chopra story is rubbish mate
22 Bryan // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:42
We will miss out on all the so called named players because we continue to fanny about trying to get these players on the cheap. Have we not learned anything from the Modric deal?
Pay the going rate and get these players signed now before the others step in and nick them.
23 HeronMag // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:45
The Modric deal?
What? The Modric deal where we offered him more money than Spurs? The £16,700,000 deal?
On the cheap!? Be fair Bryan.
24 Sav // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:47
There are plenty good players who would improve us - a good few are in the Russian team. Lets concentrate on them.
We won’t get the already superstars to sign until we are top 7. But luckily, in Owen and Martins, we have 2 already. There was no sign Arshavin was going to sign before the end of the Ruski League and every reason they’d want him to play in the Euros as a shop window. They’re not thick. He’s the 27 year old national captain, you’re not going to ‘pinch him from under anyone’s nose’. And where was all the ‘Lets sign Arshavin!’ talk maybe 4 or 5 years ago?
25 The Entertainers // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:56
Sav, good point. Where has Asharvin been for the last 5 years.
Or has the lad just blossomed of late?
If he is a late developer, then does that not suggest we too should give some of our younger players a chance instead of writing them off?
26 51times // Jun 23, 2008 at 12:59
M.Stockley - Are you thick mate? It’s obviously some unwashed loser from the village of the damned down the road, just ignore him.
27 DURhamTOON // Jun 23, 2008 at 13:12
Lads seriously CHOPRA WTF is goin on there!! A reckon its just a load ‘o’ Mackems who av realised how sh*t he is nd wanna offload him on us again… As for Arshavin its not over till he’s signed for someone CUMON KK!
Btw was anyone watchin SkySports saying Engelaar was virtually a lost cause for the wally wiv a brolly at FC Twente and Newcastle were the main English club after him??
28 Gormless Git // Jun 23, 2008 at 13:24
Never mind trying to sign Arshavin, lets sign Dean Whitehead instead!!!!

51 times- not thick no, were linkedwith gardner, chimbonda, so tbh being linked with chopra wouldnt suprise me.
30 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 23, 2008 at 13:38
It’s a joke this. New people who havn’t got a clue how to run a football club shows.
31 Kaler // Jun 23, 2008 at 14:28
We should be whipping a bid in for Pavlyuchenko as a replacement for Viduka. Big strong lad, good target man, holds the ball up well, better pace than Viduka with a decent shot on him. Wages would be cheaper than Viduka’s too I bet.
32 shearer // Jun 23, 2008 at 14:55
second that pavlyuchenko is quality although i read that real madrid were interested!! Id look at zhirkov and akinfeev aswell!
33 t-g-w // Jun 23, 2008 at 15:01
The last thing I would want to do is blame KK for anything… BUT, as far as I am aware, Arshavin was in the bag in the January transfer window but it fell through when Fat Sam was sacked. KK then had the option to sign him but dithered and decided to wait until the summer. That’s just what I remember from January. Could have bought Arshavin then, well before Euro 2008!
34 Punk Skunk // Jun 23, 2008 at 15:19
Pogrebnyak!..He was injured before the euro’s, but i think he’s better than Pav!..

It’s his own loss. If Arshavin wants to go and play for the Barcelona Reserves then he’s quite welcome to. The Premier League is the best and Newcastle will sign Arshavin, if not at least Turan or Gomis etc.
37 Kaler // Jun 23, 2008 at 21:35
I like the optimism but the trouble is I can see him preffering to warm the benches at the Camp Nou rather than coming here. Stupid move but money and sun talk.
Not heard anything on Aimar for a while, still think hes worth a punt. I’m sure Zaragoza only paid 10-12mil euros for him?
38 Oleg G // Jun 23, 2008 at 23:17
why people are making strange 11 and post it here?
specially when they write “arshavin” even thou there is almost no chance of him coming to Newcastle ?! (Andy, I am talking about u this time)
I am thinking about supporting a new team, maybe someone from India, or Iran, maybe they sign someone and not just “Targeting”
(I am so pissed off, reading all the articles for the last month…ZERO signings… WISE GO HOME !!!)
39 Marat18 // Jun 24, 2008 at 0:10
Oleg G,
don’t worry mate, just one week and all wheels will be in motion - 1 of July is coming.
Seriously, transfer window is closed now. Yes, some teams already signed someone, but there were some stories in the past when “new signing” was anounced on official web-site and then canceled due to some reasons.
where are you from, btw?
40 Patrick // Jun 24, 2008 at 7:14
Well, like I mentioned a while ago, don’t forget the pain of Guivarc’h! Someone playing so well for his nation and his current club is not necessarily telling us that he’s good for us!!!
41 cg // Jun 24, 2008 at 7:52
Well if he goes to barca - atleast it wont be the arse or manure :/
42 Andy // Jun 24, 2008 at 10:34
oleg
I was only putting the team I think would be best if we got some of the players we are linked with-no harm in that. And anyway, Zenit’s president has told setanta that arshavin is thinking of newcastle and man city if he comes to england. I know he has said that spain is his preference, but he has also said he would like to play in england so there is still hope!
