All Quiet On The Newcastle Transfer Front

It’s Kevin Keegan’s second day back at the office, but there’s nothing much going on in the Newcastle transfer market these last couple of days.

kevin-keegan-675.jpg

Kevin Keegan – will be in talks with Wise and Llambias

Of course, as we all know it takes a day or two to get back into the swing of things after a holiday, but with pre-training starting at Newcastle in only 13 days time, we will need to get moving on the transfer front.

We’re sure Kevin is deep in discussion with Dennis Wise and new Managing Director Derek Llambias, on the transfer targets.

Having already lost 6 players from the first team squad, plus Joey Barton landing himself in jail, we definitely expect players to be arriving within the next two weeks.

We also think Kevin wants his players in as early as possible, so they have the advantage of a full pre-season of training with the rest of the lads.

And although we’ve been linked with almost every player imaginable, it’s hard to really say who we’re really after.

We went after Luka Modric and Andrei Arshavin, both great players, but both of those are now out of reach.

And with Shay Given wanting to end his career on Tyneside, there’s no need wasting our time looking for a goalkeeper.

That’s an area we’re really strong in with two great experienced goalkeepers in Given and Harper, plus two excellent young 20 year olds in Forster and Krul, and also outstanding Swedish 17 year old, Ole Solderburg.

The players we think we can get and who we hope Newcastle will pursue are  the following:

Carlos Cuellar – Rangers – center-back
Nicky Shorey – Reading – left-back
Yuriy Zhirkov – CSKA Moscow – left wing back
Fabricio Collocini – Deportivo – center-back
Denis Kolodin – Dynamo Moscow – center-back
Pascal Chimbonda – Spurs – right-back – we still like him  😀
Sebastian Larsson– Birmingham – right midfield
Pablo Aimar – Real Zaragoza – central midfield
Roman Pavlyuchenko – Spartak Moscow – striker
Aaron Lennon – Spurs – winger
Arda Turan – Galatasaray – winger

There’s 11 good players and any one of them would be a good quality acquisition for Newcastle.

But now that Modric and Arshavin are not available, we haven’t covered many central midfielders in the group above. Deco is too old and wouldn’t come in any case.

It may be that we can go after Rafael Van der Vaart from Hamburg, and FC Twente midfielder Orlando Engelaar.

We don’t know if we will have any chance for Van der Vaart if bigger clubs come in for him, and Orlando turns 29 in August, and is probably too old for what Newcastle are looking for this summer.

There are also a number of youngsters we will also bring in during the summer, but those are of secondary importance right now, with our current first team squad being so small.

What do you think – and who are the good players out there, we can still attract to Tyneside?

Comments welcome.

Leo – let’s hope they are deciding and will then make their moves – this week!
The last thing we want is too many players coming in on Aug 31st.

Why do you say Arshavin isn’t available anymore Ed. If we want him desperate enough we still have a chance. I know he said he’d prefer to play in La Liga but he might not get the offers he was hoping for.

    Dear Ed,

I like the list apart from Chimbonda! The Russian Pav….. may not be so hot away from the Euros. My wishes are for :

    Cuellar, Shorey and Turan/Aimar.

As we know from experience, 99% of what the press write is pure b…. speculation. We need to be patient. Euros finish in a weeks time and contracts run out then too.

    Regards,

    Neil

Got to make sure we get the right players at a fair value, how many times in the past have we bought players for big money and they have flattered to decieve, it might be a blessing that we are taking our time to get the right players through the door.

I’m surprised we aren’t seeing more young players arriving at the club. In January we had no trouble snapping up five – Baheng, Tozer, Kadar, Soderberg and Zamblera. Although it seemed like there would be another four or five coming in this summer, there hasn’t been any so far.

Vokes joining Wolves and Madine staying at Carlisle…that worries me somewhat but only if we WERE after those players. Not sure if we were.

Schweinsteiger in the midfield would provide us some energy. One source from a Hong Kong newspaper (I know it’s kinda weak) said that both Schweinsteiger and Podolski (obvious) want out of Bayern Munich.

But I really want to mention, again and again, that we have to learn the lesson from the famous Guivarc’h incident. Without PL experience, a player can go from heaven (like EURO or World Cup) to hell (bad performance in PL). The other one we know is Shevchenko.

Thinking about Arshavin, that’s really a risky move even we want him so bad.

And let’s give young lads like Tozer a chance to shine.

Ed, we have never been linked to Zhirkov or Kolodin Kolodin is shocking.

Id like to see Rusol be bought, hes too good to play in the Ukraine and doesnt play for one of the rich clubs so wouldnt cost much.

KK originally said he wanted all his signings in time for a full pre season, he also said we needed 4 or 5 top quality players, that was the end of last season and we’ve lost a few since then…..

so let’s say six players in the next two weeks….woo-hoo, a player every two days,

anybody else feelin’ a bit pessimistic??

We won’t be getting any big signings. We will be signing kids and no-one older than 22. We have been in for several top players but they have all said no. We can’t get them and ash refuses to buy older stars on megabucks, we are between a rock and a hard place. Bet KK is not a happy camper right now.

to be honest no one seems to be doing much business clubs and players have stalled on moves because of the euros and the fact if they have a good tournament they will have much greater scope for where they can go next week is probably where things should really pick up pace and hopefully we’ll get a few in the bag pretty quickly, we must be willing to spend big if we went for modric, so heres hoping

If we go by what Keegan has done before he’ll bring in in one or two top drawer players (but ones with lets just say…issues) as he did with Ginola and Tino

He might bring in a couple of players we’ve never heard of as he did with Gillespie, Beresford, Albert, Cole etc (when I say never heard of…barely heard of)..

A big defender with a ponytail….so van Buyten or that big Turkish fella….and we’ve been linked with both

So on the above basis I’d say our team might look like this next season…

    …………..Martins…………….Owen
    ……………………….Aimar

    Zoggy…………Veloso…………Milner

    Shorey…..van Buyten…..Taylor……….Beye

    …………………….. .Given

sqd: Duff, Butt, Engelaar, Beckford, Viduka, Spear, Faye, Cacapa, Enrique, Geremi, Harper, Krul.

    And

Tom Toon, what about Chermiti? I though you loved him.

I personally would like to see Emana on that list as well. I’d also like Zigic to replace Viduka.

I’m really not fussed about Shorey, and I think most on here would turn to Spurs supporters if Chimbonda ended up at SJP. Well, maybe not, but we wouldn’t happy.

Cuellar has already said he’s not interested in playing for us.

Does anybody know what’s going on with Turan? Juventus have put in a bid apparently. GS Fan said to wait until after the Euros, but I WANT TO KNOW NOW!!!

Like the list otherwise Ed. Glad to see you’ve discovered the Russians. They’ve been a revelation haven’t they…

Agree with these Collocini, Zhirkov, Pavlyunchenko, Turan. Thats it. Chimbonda is exactly the reason why we got rid of the likes of Dyer, Jenas, etc cause of there negative attitude. Also i rate Beye higher. Cuellar is a decent player thats it. Aimar is exactly the same as Emre a player on a huge reputation that never fulfilled there potential and wants to use another silly club like us to get paid silly wages to do nothing, also too light-weight. Lennon is good, but no end product only a good price i would have him like 6m. The Kolodin link is laughable, Rozenhal looked good in the Euros and we all know what happened there, and Kolodin has awful positioning. Shorey yes good, but only if we cant get Zhirkov. Larsson I cant believe how over-rated he is, he is basically a poor version of Bentley and lets face it your come-back here will probably be but he has the potential to be like Bentley but he is only a year younger. I rate Milner above him, he only beats him on set pieces. I also find it so shocking that everyone seems to think we dont need CM with some people saying we have plenty of good CM. How can you think this, CM is the most important area of the team its where the tempo is changed and players of calibre run the game from there. We have lost both Barton, and Emre. Butt is aging rapidly and will never score. I think we should be really pursuing some positive midfielders. Im shocked we havent moved for 2 especially proven Premiership players: Steve Sidwell but even better Manuel Fernandes or both in my mind. Lets wake up shall we

this might b kks plan, to blood in the youngsters that are playing so well for us and then mayb buy only one or two in the market. i reckon are defence is pretty good mayb another lb to help enrique develop bu the defence is sorted apart from that. midfield we only need some cm in as wingers were fine with and strikers were also f9 wit.

with the euro’s all but over, pre-season only 3 weeks away (21 days FFS!) and we haven’t signed anyone and we’ve lost 4 players, Shola will be 5 we are desperate for some signings.

If this continues we will get held to ransom and will end up with a load of s**t like we did two seasons ago with Roeder. We will have to put out half a team at old trafford and get absolutely stuffed.

one thing is for sure mike ashley+ kk+ wise are here to remove the deadwood, and its for god, atleast somebody is here to take a risk, a major step forward…….
and i am sure of one thing ma would be ready to splash in big bucks if he thinks that player is woth it

eg: modric( acc to me not worth that muc money), gomis, enrique( he splashed a lot of money for a 21 yr old fullback)

this season newcastle are going to be the surprise package of league…….

I’m saying Veloso cos a certain song is ringing through my mind…”Oh it’s all gone quiet over there…oh it’s.”

I think it’s too easy for us all to get things clouded cos of the impatience and al the rumours but if we just pull ourselves back to the earlier reports….Arda, Bousoufa, Veloso, van Buyten, Shorey, Aimar…..

After seeing Arda close up I think Keegan will know he has a better player in Zoggy and chances are he has talked Charles around. But as for the rest, I think we have a chance on all of them and considering how we finished last season those players would be enough to see us challenging for 6th.

I struggle sometimes to understand the theory that you need 20 multi-zillion pound players to challenge Everton, Portsmouth, Man City and Blackburn.

And as for Spurs, they lost home and away against us despite having a so-called top 6 squad who incidently finished only one place above us…..and that was hardly a good trying effort from our boys was it?…we were shite!

So if we play how KK had us playing at the end of the season, we don’t need to spend loads….like KK said “top four? it’s just a dream!”.

But top 6 is game on!
