Good news today in the Daily Mirror, if it’s true, that Newcastle United will go after 20 year old Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok.
Eren Derdiyok – just turned 20 this month – would be excellent buy
Eren is the player who scored a great goal against England earlier this year for Switzerland, and looked a solid prospect during Euro 2008, where he looked like a top striker in the making.
Eren also said he wanted to join Newcastle so he could play alongside Michael Owen, so we may well be able to entice the player to Tyneside.
Newcastle had been watching Eren before the Euro 2008 tournament, and he looked a good player for one so young, and at 6’3″ he is a good physical player, big and strong, who can hold the ball up well, just what we need.
The 20-year-old was also said to be watched by Arsenal during the Euro 2008 tournament, but if Newcastle want him and move quickly, we should be able to get the deal done.
Eren was quoted in late April as saying:
“My dream is to play with Michael Owen at Newcastle.”
So hopefully he still thinks that way.  😀
The Basle striker is rated around £6M by his club, which seems a bit high to us, but the player is very eager to move to the Premier League.
Eren’s played for Basle 39 times since 2006, and has scored 8 goals for his home town club.
If we really want this player, the club hopefully will move aggressively to capture him – this week.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1yes too rights Ed we need to be more agressive in the transfer market,
i remember a poll a while back RE: whether we are a pushover in the transfer market like we used to be, i dont think we are but i think we have gone to the other extreme at being too ruthless when negotiating believing that we will pull them in on the cheap…

Comment #2I like Derdiyok. He impressed me in Euro 2008. However we need more talent in the midfield, or we’re going to have noone to supply all of our strikers!

Comment #3A good acquisition but caution. This is an item from Mirror, Mirror on the shite house wall. Hope it is true though. We still need midfielders, defenders and wingers.

Comment #4As you already know I’m swiss and I also rate him high, surely, but if he should already go away from basel I don’t know…but his heart is black n white and that will help him to settle in!
He’s not just a prospecting signing, he has a geordie dream and I hope he can fullfill his and our dreams! Good luck young lad!

Comment #5I would like it alot if we could sign this player. Still only 20 years old and has bags of talent. Could become a top quality striker in the future. But regarding the midfield, I honestly think we have lost out in the race to sign Arshavin and Turan so we might need to look elsewhere for midfield talent. I hope we’ll go for McGeady.

Comment #7Switzerland is a small country and we know that we are only an “education” country for young talents! Just look how 19 year old GELSON FERNANDES has turned out at man city after his transfer from Sion, Switzerland!
I think switzerland does his job good and brings out some talents every year.

Comment #927 games last year in swiss leage (13 times he came in from the bench) with 12 scorer points (7 goals and 5 passes) isn’t that bad for a 19 year old!

Comment #12According to the media we bid £6 million for him yesterday. Seems awfully high for someone with a bad scoring record (aka Smith)

Comment #14broon ale – he’s just a kid, he’s still learning his trade.
This kid has got some talent, 6’3″, committed, physical and pretty skilful. If he wants to come, bloody hell go after him and sign him up!
But Ed as you say that would require Newcastle acting quickly – could be a long shot.

Comment #15But you all are right yes, it is a rather high fee for a surely promising youngster, but we do not know how he will proceed…still young and has to learn a lot!

Comment #17as you know i’m from malta and realy like this site.keep up the good work cos you are realy after all our possibilities signings.
something about newcastle utd.in my opinion our midfield needs 3 new players.we need playmakers adn left wing.we need a striker and 2 backup defenders.
6 new signings will be great for us if they will be potential players.hope that my opinion will come true

Comment #18maybe its a gamble worth proceeding with. it would be typical if we were to be tentative and allow arsenal to sign him and then we have to live with the “if only” scenario

Comment #21He’s got a very good eye for goal. I like him, especially as he’s always has his sights on goal before anything else. Just like Shearer used to!
Greedy, Ruthless and Relentless. Just what we need up top at Newcastle!

Comment #24ppl are complaing about his goal ratio, he was a 19yr old last season, 7 goals in 27 aint tht bad especially considering half of his apps were sub, mark viduka only got 7 goals in 26 apps last season so his record no worse than his and derdiyoks only gonna get better

Comment #25@brownrob = Enrique was a different case, he was an outstanding left back for Villereal and was constantly being linked with Barc and Real.
A lot of the Spanish media (like myself) were shocked when we signed him.
I love Beye like everyone else, but Enrique was our best signing by miles because he can be at the club for ten years.

Comment #28Enrique doesn’t get the praise he deserves from some supporters in my opinion, he had a very good season considering it was his first in england, he doesn’t speak much English, we played a winger at left-back instead of him most of the time and the club was once again in crisis. Some people need to give him a break.

Comment #30scoring ratio dont mean shit, different league, different style of play, different manager, different coaches, different stadium, different training facilities, and different team mates will bring out a different performance.
whether it is better or worse you will never know until they actually come
the best way to get an early indicator of how good a player will be in this league is to simply watch HOW he plays, not just base it on goals. e.g. kezman and kuyt = poor buys based on score ratio

Comment #32i agree tom toon, this guy looked good for switzerland, just needs to brush up on a few things.
However, i personally feel Carroll could turn out to be a good striker. Derdiyok is much better though

Comment #38Dont know spyro, I cant put my finger on it.
I played against him last season when North shields played the reserves in the senior bowl and i wasn’t impressed.
I know everyone has an iffy permormance from time to time but there is something missing there.
possiby a bit of an attitude on him too.

Comment #39i just think we need a decent coach for our young strikers. Ameobi showed potential and could have been much better than he turned out to be in the end, there must be something wrong with the coaching of our strikers
