Portsmouth are reported in the Daily Mirror today, to be ready to bid for Reading left-back Nicky Shorey.

Nicky Shorey - are Newcastle still interested?
Newcastle need a new left-back in the squad before 31st August, and earlier in the summer we were said to be interested in both Nicky Shorey and John Arne Riise of Liverpool.
But Newcastle didn’t seem to bid for Riise at all and he joined Italian club Roma for around £4M.
So we wonder if Newcastle will be in for Shorey, since it looks like Portsmouth are now moving for the player, and are reported to be lodging a £3M bid.
Reading rejected a £4M bid for Shorey from West Ham United last summer, but things have changed since that time, with Reading now in the Championship, and probably needing to cut their wage bill while still trying to mount a promotion bid for next season. A tricky balancing act.
Nicky has played 267 times for Reading since 2001 and scored 12 goals. He has one cap for England, and before Reading, the Romford-born player was at Leyton Orient for a couple of seasons, and appeared 15 times for them.
Comments welcome.

not a big fan. enrique is better and as I said yesterday, Tamas Kadar will be pushing enrique for a starting posistion next season

Can’t agree more that Kadar will shine next season.

Kadar will be pushing every postion for a starting place next season! What a signing that boy was.

I always thought Tozer looked like the more natural LB and Kadar the better CB…
But if Kadar is that good at LB bring him into the first team!
7 Geordie Nick // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:39
sign him, for all kadar has had a great start here its a big step from reserve to premiership football and he may well not be ready for it yet, we need player playin who we KNOW can make the grade right NOW and we dnt know if kadar can yet, i personally dont want to be putting all my trust in young kids this season as it is a BIG season for us
8 HeronMag // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:40
On Shorey, I would be a little upset if we missed out. He’s an up and coming left back whose attacking nature would balance nicely with that of Habib Beye. But I still like Enrique more.
9 Geordie Nick // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:41

I’d have Shorey for not much cash, but he doesn’t set ma world alight!..
12 ToonKing // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:44
Kadar is a CB capable of playing at LB, if anyone it’s Tozer who will be pushing Enrique.
13 craig chisholm // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:45
we are buying no-one at all. i am convinced that we will get rid of a few more dross on high wages and then just blood the young ens. thats what i think will happen…………some blokec said the other day that we have spear in the bag and he will be announced on july 01st. he would be ok, and at only 15 should be in our price range……..a quarter of bons bons was what he asked for i think.
14 Frankieboy // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:46
Get him but only for the right price.
I beleive he can also play at right back,if so can provide cover for both Beye and Enrique.
Could be a good addition to the squad.
15 HeronMag // Jun 26, 2008 at 10:49
Geordie Nick - I didn’t click on that he was that old… He seems a young 27.
Still has 6 years at the top of his game I suppose. He’s worth taking a punt on I reckon.

your all kidding yourselfs if you think keegan will rely on any of our youngsters next season , may get an odd game if they are lucky .
22 9 Shearer // Jun 26, 2008 at 11:12
I really dont know what is happening at our club everything isnt right Keegan came bk bt nothing has happened yet. For Ashley he made a deal with Spurs 2 come 2 newcastle and f**k up our football. Wen i look at it Ashely says we are not going to spend alot of money we have made big signings but it hasnt worked, it were the managers that were sh*t, WE HAVE Keegan now not those losers. He says we will use kids, it failed for Sir Bobby who is Keegan if u know wat i mean. We are losing out great buys coz of this fat man not letting go of his money that is where i miss FREDDy from he got every player we wanted,he had a debt of 100m but do u know the dabts Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal have more than 100m and we all make 100m look like a big deal. The only problem freddy had was 2 ve non- Geordie managers but Ashely has non- Geordie backroom staff wat is worse.
I had interest for next season coz he led for Arshavin, Arda,Cuellar,Aimar and many others bt look at it now we are leading on no one. we are now chasing floops from Spurs, Reading,WIGAN,Birmigham, players who cant even fight for a place or make a change at the club.
We have no chairman for 2 weeks now we have an MD we are not running a casino we are running a club.
Long live the Toon army. Geordie 4 life and death.
23 Neil // Jun 26, 2008 at 11:20
Dear Ed,
I wouldn’t say no to Shorey, but would prefer Bridge. However, he seems to like the bench at Chelsea, is probably at his peak, would cost a lot in wages and does not have fond memories of St. James’ where he suffered a horrible injury.
Shorey’s form dipped last year, but he can pass a ball and defend.
Am I detecting a more sober, realistic mood permeating the blog?
Regards,
Neil

Shorey good LB not much worse than Enrique defensively, Much better than Enrique attacking wise.
Great delivery from set pieces and open play, An all round better LB than we already have at the club and we should bid for him.

Get the impression at NUFC that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Need a firm reassurance from KK that he is in charge of the squad and transfers. Would Shorey be happy as a squad player or would he demand first team all the time? Same for Chimbonda. Are they players who want to play for NUFC or themselves? NUFC is not a meal ticket or any old job until another club turns up. I am trusting KK on this. After all he found Beresford, Sellars, Tino, Rob Lee and brought Big Al home! Of course Pompey have moved for Shorey - they think we or Spurs or Villa are interested so they jump in. Not to mention the phone call from their transfer brokers working at the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail!!!

9 Shearer give your head a shake. The crimes Shepherd committed against this club with his 2 faced, self - serving greed, interference, appalling decision making, xenophobia, brothel creeping etc, while running the club in to the ground and walking away with 40M, could fill a library.
I like the idea of youngsters not has beens on unsustainable wages. If keeping a 4-3-3
Harper / Krul
Beye (capt). Kadar / Taylor. Edgar. Enrique .
Lua Lua Faye N’Zogbia
Milner
Derdiyok Martins.
Sell:
Barton
Smith
Duff
Geremi
Butt
Owen.
39 Spyro // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:06
enrique over shorey any day, enrique has the potential to be much better, however, shorey as cover would be fine for me
40 James // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:09
Based on no signings, this is the current line up for Old Trafford opener:
—————————Given————————
–Beye——–Taylor———-Faye——–Enrique
———Milner———-Butt———-Nzogbia
—————————Owen———————-
————–Smith—————Martins
And that line up would get thumped by Manure
41 steve // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:12
@Nick - might keep owen but otherwise agree
If you have a business where your costs outstrip your revenue there is only one way your business is going. FFS almost took us to the wall whilst lining his very deep pockets he should be ran out of Newcastle, friggin scrap metal crook.
42 NUFCAl // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:16
Shorey is nothing special. I would have him here as backup but would never put him in the team ahead of young Enrique. As long as the people in front of him and around him are up to scratch Enrique will really show his worth next season and develop into one of the best left backs in the league. What a find.
As for Kadar, whenever I’ve seen him play for the reserves he’s played at centre back and been absolutely tremendous. This kid is going to turn out to be one of our best signings in years, and he is the reason why I think we should give up on Edgar. Kadar and LuaLua have TALENT.
My mate said he was taking an SJP tour and he saw Dennis Wise showing Aaron Spear around the facilities. Looks like Wise actually has some use after all.
43 Matthew Tom // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:17
Enrique is young and he looks like he will be a good player, more than capable of fulfilling the LB role next season.
Tozer is also young and also looks like a good player so far, who could cover perfectly well in his natural position if Enrique got injured.
We also have Edgar who has looked decent when played in the LB position on a few occasions, most notably against Man Utd.
We can also deploy Kadar there if we need to.
If we’re going to invest in good young players, wouldn’t it send the wrong message to be recruiting another senior LB at this stage.
Surely the plan should be to have one leading player in each position, with a talented youngster ready to be given a chance if there are any injuries or suspensions. Yes we may suffer the odd problem due to inexperience, but this is how our young players gain experience and grow into proper footballers.
44 Obafan // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:36
We will see what is going to happen. The window isn’t open yet, we will get new players (not too sure about the quality which will be brought in). For me Shorey would be a good player to get, cause he is better than Enrique in going forward, but Enrique is the better in defending. This leads to the case that KK will be able to decide who plays according to the tactics he wants (attacking side with Shorey or defensive side with Enrique).
45 faustino // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:38
9shearer if you think that fat tw*t shepherd was there to do anything but serve his own pikey horde you’ve got a porblem mate. The guy was scum. Almost runied the club. Obv. too young to remember Toongate.
46 Geordie Nick // Jun 26, 2008 at 12:40
how can anyone say they wud never put shorey infront of enrique, what if enrique flops??? what if shoreys form is excellent?? u wud leave him out just cos u like enrique more, wat a load of bollocks, u need 2 players for each postion, u dnt buy sumone just for backup u buy them to contest with the other for the postion and whoever is playin btetter at the time gets the postion simple as tht, u cant say ud have enrique ahead of him always unless enrique plays better constantly and deserves it

The lad can defend, but the stat that impressed me most was last season he was in the top5 of all players for crosses into box. Thats from a left back.
Worth a punt, but not at 5miliion or more. As we have other priorities.

As a matter of fact, I like most of the TOON ARMY are a little disappointed that we only Managed to knock 7 past your lot, I am reckoning double figures would have been more fitting!!
Come back when you have beaten us, and comment on who is the better team, club etc etc etc.

I like Shorey but I don’t see the use when we got the Bull. What I would like to see is us pick up a really promising youngster (or 2) at RB to give Beye some cover / competition.
