June 29th, 2008 · 66 Comments

Finally some good news in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle are indeed after 20 year old impressive Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok.

Eren Derdiyok - 20 year old impressive Swiss Striker

The Sunday Sun today is reporting that Newcastle have indeed opened talks over a move for Swiss starlet 6′3″ Eren Derdiyok.

Newcastle management apparently first met with representatives of the 20-year-old FC Basel striker in London last week.

After positive mutual  discussions over the move, the next thing is for the Tyneside club to move in with a suitable offer, and hopefully capture the youngest player in the Euro 2008 championships. Eren just turned 20 on June 12th.

We know from previous comments from the player that he would be delighted to join Newcastle.

This is good news for Newcastle fans, because judging the comments on this site, most fans believe Eren would be a great buy for the club.

He certainly looked a great young player in the making during the Euro 2008 games.

Derdiyok parents are Turkish, and he is also said to be attracting interest from both Besiktas and Fenerbahce in Turkey.

But neither of these clubs are thought to be able to match the compensation package Newcastle can offer the youngster.

If we can capture  young Eren next week, before pre-training starts the following Monday, that would be an excellent start to our summer’s transfer business.

We think Eren could be a great buy for the club, and he’s certainly seems to want to come to play for the Magpies, and that’s always good.

Comments welcome.

He did look quite handy in the euros like! i think he was really good with the ball at his feet! good example was in that match when it was pissing it down & he played one of the best balls of the match for a goal! if he can play passes like that in monsoon conditions then hopefully he’ll be even better in the tropical climate of the north east! it would just be nice to see somebody come in! but only quality will do! he is a promising player but i’d rather have a player with more experience, Gomez, crouch or Guiza! but this lad would be a good buy!

  • 2 iain // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:36

perfect replacement for shola and smith, now all we need to do is hope viduka gets fit and stays fit or replace him with someone like crouch.

  • 3 mr_flibbles // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:41

Second time you posted this article Ed . He is not a great player and nobody can say he will become a great player. From what i have seen he is more likely to score than Alan Smith but then again anyone striker we buy would be.

not too sure if we got him whether he will be used if owen and martins stay fit. If we are going to get a striker we better make it a really good one.

  • 4 mozza // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:41

@iain acording to the comical last week crouch has said he has no interest in coming to the toon, that said i dont believe a word anyone at that paper writes

  • 5 Marc Hottiger // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:42

    Would be a terrific signing

  • 6 T.O.Mag // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:47

great signing! looked better than Gomis at the euros and half the cost

  • 7 Ross G // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:50

i was right (check few days back), i have more news too

  • 8 sas // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:50

His goalscoring record in a very poor league is very poor indeed.

  • 9 Matthew // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:52

A bright young player who can come into the squad and offer more than an awful Alan Smith while being on half the wages and have the hunger to improve.

Our strikeforce showed at the end of last season that they’re more than good enough, Viduka’s injury record is the only worry but if Keegan still has faith in him then we’ve got no choice but to go with his judgement.

Finding a player capable of supplying our strikeforce should be his next priority.

  • 10 Matt // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:52

Long Term Replacement For Viduka, Tall, Strong Target man, good control, and a quick mind

Showed most of these glimpses of quality at Euro 08

could prove a great buy indeed

  • 11 dcbashore // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:53

Don’t forget Roque Santa Cruz had a poor goalscoring record at Bayern, sas, and look what he did last year.

I think this would be a good signing, particularly since he seems to play better with better players (see his Swiss performances compared to club). Would be a great fit and could learn a bit from Viduka (hopefully more about football and less about eating all the pies).

  • 12 Mac // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:55

Better than Shola,Smith and Carrol. Get him in looks handy good first touch knows where the goal is and wants to play

  • 13 micepie // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:55

Just a hypothesis but this would be a great threesome to get for not too much wonga:

    Derdiyok (6M)
    SWP (8M?)
    Bullard (5M?)

Something like that and only letting Amoebi go might mean we’d just need a couple of defenders and a couple more youngsters. Ummm…okay so I wasted 5 minutes of my Sunday on this post but so what!

  • 14 Danny D // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:57

    @ Ross G

    Tell us!! :D

  • 15 Pete // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:58

Sunday Sun is reporting.. need I say more. That said, I think most supporters are so starved for a signing they’d take just about anybody right about now… Who knows if he’s quality, can’t say I did more than barely notice this guy.

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:58

Ross G, whats your other news?

Im reay excited by Derdiyok, he looked really good in the euros with his invention up top, kinda like Viduka.

It seems like a lot of fans are sill expecting trophy signings, we are a mid table club and trophy signings would do us no good even if we werent. Rant over.

    Bring on the Yok :)

  • 17 Gareth // Jun 29, 2008 at 15:59

SAS, au contraire there is nothing wrong with his goalscoring record. 10 goals in 36 last season is not bad when you consider that he must’ve been sub quite often (av. 53 mins per game - cheers wiki!) That works out equivalent to 10 goals in 21 equivalent full matches - 1 in 2, not bad, especially as it must be harder to make an impression off the bench.
Plus, he can only continue to improve. I thought he looked handy, would be a good (and realistic) signing.

  • 18 Matthew // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:03

Look on his wiki page at the bottom for how he performed in 07/08 under All-time performance.

It tells you how many appearances he made, how many minutes he played, how many minutes on average he played, his goals and assists.

Quite impressive even if it is a weaker league when you remember he was 19 when their season finished.

  • 19 xfer // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:04

    Hottiger? Haha…

Would be a good signing. Like what i seen of him so far.

  • 20 Matthew // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:05

The funny thing is Tom Toon is that people slated Shepherd for those trophy signings yet are complaining that we won’t be signing any now!

  • 21 ScottyT // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:06

i dont like how some people are sayin mid table therefore cant get qulity players. if thts the ambition of fans and ashley then we aint gonna go anywhere. atm yh we are a midtable team im not dillusional we aint gd enough for top half atm. but if we are 2 improve we need ambition man!

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:06

Matthew - Im not complaining, i dont want trophy signings! I’m saying many fans seems to be expecting them!

  • 23 Faustino // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:07

Check Andy Cole’s stats at Bristol and Arsenal before KK signed him.

  • 24 Hadrian // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:09

those of you saying he’s not a great player , what are you basing this off exactly ?
from what ive read he’s done really well at his club for his age , and they have also turned out some great players these past few years .
his goal against england was really well taken , and i thought he did well in an average swiss team this tourny .
he has the added benefit of age on his side , and he’s already came out and singled newcastle out as a club he’d like to join ,
thats alot to work with imo :) exited by this signing , may turn out tobe a dark horse i reckon , we love a bit of commitment up these parts and the lads already done that without even being on the books .

  • 25 Spyro // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:10

goal ratios are merely one of many INDICATORS of a strikers quality , and not a very reliable one at that, look to HOW the striker plays and that is the best way to judge how suitable they are for this league.

  • 26 Spyro // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:11

    100% agree hadrian

  • 27 Gareth // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:11

After further wiki cnformation I shall add that at 20yrs old, Alan Shearer’s goal record was 8 goals in 50 appearances. So don’t jump to quick judgements on scoring records!

  • 28 Hadrian // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:14

i dont know what a trophy signing is exactly , could someone point one out tome that newcastle have bought ?

  • 29 Danish_Magpie // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:14

He gets a thumbs up from me too. Sign him up, and our strikeforce is set.

  • 30 Danish_Magpie // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:16

Hadrian: Perfect example of trophy signing = Owen. It’s not that I don’t like him, but throwing heaps of money at one player with a big name instead of strengthening the team where needed and in depth etc, that is a trophy signing.

  • 31 Ally // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:17

Do you not think ultimately though spyro a striker is judged on by how many goals they score

  • 32 Spyro // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:19

i think they are ultimately judged on how many goals they score, but thats only once they are in the premier league

  • 33 craig chisholm // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:32

Garath man, i agree with the way you check the stats out. stats dont tell lies, whether its in footy or any walk of life. Stats tell us everything, If this kid is averaging a goal every other game at his young age he is well worth a serious look at.

  • 34 normski1930z // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:37

i sometimes ppl on here rant and rave on about stats but the thing is they are normally stats from another league which doesnt really mean anything cos lets face it the premier league is probably the quickest in the world and its a case of can the player adapt to it. having sed that this kid looks at best average so im not so sure. just my opinion.

  • 35 Jim // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:39

Forget the 70’s soundtrack but here’s a taster of
    Eren Derdiyok.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNxlFf5GTdE

  • 36 Hadji // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:40

Even some of the football top players didnt have the same talent at Derdiyok’s age.Just look at Drogba or Toni, they developed really late.

  • 37 51times // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:42

Danish_Magpie - A better example would be Kluivert.

  • 38 Hadrian // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:54

Owen was englands goldenboy , one of the highest international strikers of all time , clynical finisher , bought from the biggest club in the world where he still held a 1 goal in 2 game ratio .

owen’s had his worst luck with injurys AFTER he came to the toon .
no way in hell was he a trophy signing , just an ambitious one , that we needed aswell , dont forget he was to replace big al

  • 39 mozza // Jun 29, 2008 at 16:56

    @51times agree

  • 40 scottish mag // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:07

    finally some good news

wot i like about ths kid is that he has pace, strength, skill and he actually attacks crosses with his head which is something i feel we have missed since shearer retired as owen although he does score with his head he isnt the tallest and cant really challenge the big cb’s, and oba doesnt chalenge for headers in the box very often, he waits to mop up after

  • 41 simon winham // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:19

sign him up it would be a good signing at 6mil hopeful then shola will relise we don’t want him

  • 42 Yahya Ahmad // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:22

He is worth the 6 million more than wat we paid for Alan Smith! And looks to a be a future star!

  • 43 SwedeEric // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:29

He realy looks to have what it takes to make it in the PL! Could turn out to be a great buy in a cuple of years…

I for one doesn´´t understand all the talk about his goalratio… It´s quite good I think, and at the age of 19 years old… And think he didn´t realy have the quality of Owen, Martins, Geremi, Milner, Zog and so on around him in Basel…

  • 44 Ben_BKK // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:53

SwedeEric, are you really saying that Geremi is quality? :P

Get him in, I say, fits the clubs supposed transfer policy of getting young, up and coming players, and for not too high a transfer fee either. I hope to see him being displayed at SJP soon :D

  • 45 Kaler // Jun 29, 2008 at 17:57

Be really chuffed if we sign this kid, he may only bag a couple of goals this season, but I think his value will come in assists. From what i’ve seen of him looks to have a good football mind. Give him 3 seasons with us and he could be banging them in, like others have said, long term replacement for Dukes.

  • 46 Geordie Lumberjack // Jun 29, 2008 at 18:05

Is he the one that scored against England in that friendly a few months back? Capello’s first match in charge.

If so, that was a wonderfully taken goal, nice run, quick shot, made Rio and James look silly.

  • 47 neeraj // Jun 29, 2008 at 18:26

    Derdiyok (6M)
    is a good bargain…..
    get few more young faces

milner, martins, taylor staying good news… hope zog also stays and remains happy

  • 48 Nick C // Jun 29, 2008 at 18:36

See Comment 7, howay Ross, spill the beans man!

  • 49 The Entertainers // Jun 29, 2008 at 18:49

For me anyway, i would be over the moon if we signed him.

Lets face it every players a gamble of sorts, but on the viewings of this guy he looks as if he can play the target guy with easy (check out the goal against England, he starts the move with hold up play) and from You Tube (i know, i know!) he appears to be comfortable with the ball at his feet.

6 million would be a good price these days.
Getting excited now, have to calm down!

  • 50 Leo // Jun 29, 2008 at 19:11

young lad who has stepped up at the euro’s looks a decent prospect and has lots of potential

damn i said the dreaded P word!!!!

  • 51 toooooon fan // Jun 29, 2008 at 19:13

I take it ross you are lying, but i howener have some reliable news from the sighting of kk in the restaurant i work in that derdyok has agreed to sign in advance while ameobi is off to hull instead of west brom

  • 52 Kash3 // Jun 29, 2008 at 19:26

@Marc Hottiger: Are you the Marc Hottiger that played for us back in KK’s first period as manager?

  • 53 Lull // Jun 29, 2008 at 19:27

I hope his club would agree to sell him. He looks like he have potential to be a good target-man.

  • 54 adam // Jun 29, 2008 at 20:52

aparrenty newcastle united football club are goin to sign real madrid forward julio baptista next week

  • 55 Dave // Jun 29, 2008 at 21:17

    Source adam?

And don’t say Tomato or Brown :|

  • 56 Seymour Butts // Jun 29, 2008 at 21:49

cant beleive ppl are getting excited about someone who has scored 5 goals in 39 league games!!

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Jun 29, 2008 at 21:53

11 in 44 and on playing time he scores 1 in 2 because most of his apps have been off the bench, and in playing an assist 1 in 3 so technically every 3 games he contributes directly to 2 goals :)

  • 58 Punk Skunk // Jun 29, 2008 at 23:39

    Ho’way Eren, let’s have ya’!..

  • 59 Gateshead Mag. // Jun 30, 2008 at 1:44

He’s only effing 20 years old man!! He’s got his best years ahead of him, He’s already recognised throughout Europe. Looks a good player imo and if he’s said he wants to play for Newcastle then he’s more than welcome.

FEEK THE YOK AND HE WILL SCORE!

  • 60 ginkoh // Jun 30, 2008 at 4:41

He’s strong lads and young with ambition. He will be our good signing ? not sure but worth to gamble.

  • 61 Davies // Jun 30, 2008 at 9:25

Looks good to me. As I’ve said before, I’ll celebrate when I see him in black and white.

  • 62 Keith // Jun 30, 2008 at 12:10

Not sure how some can say his record isnt good:

Of 44 appearances for Basle with an average of 48.5′ minutes on the pitch he scored 11 goals with 6 assists. (he only plays a half a game)

For Switzerland at all levels - 18 appearances, Average of 66.7′ nimutes a game he has scored 15 goals and 6 assists.

He is at an age and would be going to a club where he will continue to improve.

If that doesnt show potential - what does! I suggest the doubters do some research before screaming we want VDV, Arshavin, Modric before throwing their rattles out of their prams.

  • 63 Darryl // Jun 30, 2008 at 13:10

Some other club will come in and grab him under our nose’s for us not being quick enough.

    Arshavin
    Modric

Have already proved that - because we wont get arshavin now.

  • 64 gorskino10 // Jun 30, 2008 at 13:23

Hes not going to be a top scorer i dont think for Newcastle but he could score some good goals and is worth 6mill the only good thing going for us is that Kev knows how to make a striker play well as using his own experiance so it would be a great move for Dirdiyok who is still very young.

  • 65 James!!! // Jul 1, 2008 at 20:37

he looks a guddin, him owen and martins up front wud scare the shit out of any defence, all three of them with their combined pace, intelligence and scoring ability is jus wot newcastle need.. also he is still young and so is martins so they cud also provide consistency and be a vital partneship for many years !!!

  • 66 normski1930z // Jul 1, 2008 at 20:55

keith my rattle was thown out of the pram in 1996 when cantona scored that goal at sjp mate honest that game had the most electric atmosphere i have ever been to in my life, when i came out of the ground that night i wanted to burn my season ticket and if im honest i dont think nowt has changed apart from nufc going backwards…elborate for me please….

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
