Newcastle United are reported to be locked in a compensation battle with Everton Football Club, for first team coach Steve Round.
Steve Round – impasse with his move to Everton
Everton were given permission last week to speak with the former England coach, whose contract runs out at the club today.
But apparently the negotiations are now at an impasse, because Newcastle are demanding compensation from Everton if Steve joins them.
37 year-old Round was brought to Newcastle last summer by then manager Sam Allardyce, and as a surprise to us, no new deal has been offered to Round by Newcastle. But maybe it was Round who wanted to move on to another opportunity.
We don’t understand why Newcastle want compensation, if indeed Round’s contract runs out today, because how can we expect any compensation for him, if he has no contract at the club?
It’s like when a player’s contract runs out – he is then a free agent – and the club gets nothing for him.
Round is also interesting Chelsea – but it seems like they will need to wait until new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari gets on board fully, before they’ll know exactly what they need in terms of coaching.
Former Newcastle coach Steve Clarke was recently sacked by Chelsea, and maybe Kevin has him lined up to join the Newcastle revolution.
Steve of course is an excellent coach, and served as an assistant manager when Ruud Gullit managed Newcastle from 1998-1999 – but one season was enough for Gullit and Shearer working together.
Steve’s done a great job at Chelsea over the years, and was prominent when the great Jose Mourinho was managing the club, until last year. We’d love to see Steve rejoin the club and start working with Kevin.
We’ll watch the developments on Round, but it’s almost certain Kevin has another coach lined up, given that pre-training starts next Monday.
