Barton Changes Plea to Guilty

June 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 106 Comments

The Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has changed his plea from innocent to guilty,  just before the scheduled start of his trial today at Manchester Minshull Crown Court.

ousmane-dabo.jpg

Ousmane Dabo - arriving at court in Manchester today

Barton, 25, has now admitted one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm to Ousmane Dabo, in a training ground incident, when they were team mates at Manchester City on May 1st, last year.

Barton has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons off the pitch, over the last three or four years, because of his anger and temper tantrums.

This is the third criminal trial this year for Barton, and in one he was declared innocent, but in the other he was found guilty of assault and affray and jailed for 6 months, a sentence which he is currently serving.

In April 2004, he stormed out of Eastlands before kick-off after being dropped from the side to face Southampton that day, and in a 2005 pre-season friendly game, although it was anything but that, he sparked a mass brawl in the game against Doncaster Rovers.

The fact that Barton has suddenly pleaded guilty, after previously strenuously denying the charges against him for over 13 months, may not stand him in good stead for the sentencing.

If he is found guilty we think there is a very good chance that his club, Newcastle United will sack him, immediately following the verdict.

Comments welcome.

  • 2 The Entertainers // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:21

BBC are stating he will be sentenced Tuesday morning Ed.

But i think it could be next week before we hear from Newcastle.

Clear the decks of him. Sign Dabo while you are at it. Move on.

  • 4 Ruvio // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:26

aye, i think he’s a troubled lad that shouldnt be allowed in the world of football, or normal society
he needs his head sorting, and the toon shouldn’t be paying his wages while it’s being done
and toon_ksk, i dont think comments like that are necessary, from what i know, dabo is a top chap

  • 6 Chris // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:32

A reporter for SSN has just said that he expects Barton to get a suspended sentence. He also states that he’s already up for parole on the other incident! He’s a lucky git if that’s the case.

  • 7 WIGAZ // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:32

This will be the last we see of joey barton boys! this lad was a fat sam buy! sadly for us he’s an idiot or we could sell him & get back most of what we paid for him! but he’ll go down & we’ll bin him! i for one say good ridance! we should of never brought this player to our club! yes he’s played ok in a handful of games but lets face it he’s nowt flash is he! he’s no Gerrard, no lampard, no scholes hell he’s not even as good as Kevin Nolan or jimmy bullard! lets get rid & get one of those two in! they would wear the no7 with pride & dignity! unlike some shamless lil scouse chava! joey barton is nothing but a thug with a great job! arsehole GET HIM OUT!!!!

  • 12 steve // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:41

We knew when we signed him he was trouble - why oh why did Mort sanction it - leopard and spots springs to mind

A Christmas bash for Manchester City players that December saw him stub a lit cigar into the eye of Jamie Tandy, a young team-mate. He was fined six weeks’ wages.

In May 2005 he broke the leg of a 35-year-old pedestrian while driving his car at 2am in Liverpool city centre and the following month was involved in a spat with a 15-year-old Everton fan at City’s team hotel in Bangkok. Again he was fined by City.

The bad blood with Everton fans continued in 2006 when he dropped his shorts in the direction of home fans at Goodison Park. He was fined and warned by the FA for his conduct.

In February last year he made his England debut against Spain but a month later was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage in an incident involving a taxi driver.

Three months later came the fight with Dabo, and a month after that he was sold by City to Newcastle Utd for £5.8 million. Barton sat out Newcastle’s Boxing Day game last year as he was injured, but went drinking in Liverpool city centre afterwards.

In the early hours of December 27 he got into an argument in a McDonald’s restaurant and violence again broke out. Drunk, Barton straddled his victim, punching him repeatedly in the face. This time the attack was caught on CCTV. The player admitted assault and affray and was jailed for six months on May 20.

Just ten days later he was brought back to court to deal with alleged criminal damage to a taxi in Liverpool, a charge dating back to March 2007. He was alleged to have ripped out the cabbie’s radio because he would not wait at a McDonald’s drive-through while Barton got food.

  • 16 Davies // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:44

Tooooooon Fan, you are a fibber. Furthermore, do you really want this violent little scumbag representing your club.

The more news there is about Joey Barton, the more sick of him I get. Not fit to wear the black and white. Wash your hands of him Kevin Keegan.

  • 17 Graham // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:44

toooooon fan - have you been drinking?

  • 18 Big Si // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:46

I can’t believe he’s going to get off with a suspended sentance. If I was Dabo I would be bloody fuious with that.

  • 19 Graham // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:46

I was once for keeping Barto and trying to rehabilitate him as he could end uplike Gazza.

But now, today, after pulling my pods out at work for a fraction of what this guy is getting I say sack the nasty piece of work

  • 20 Davies // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:47

If you’s keep responding to toooon fans bull he’ll just keep it up. Probably a bored mackem or something. STOP GIVING HIM ATTENTION FFS.
Do you honestly expect Keegan to be doing business in some restaurant for goodness sake.
I don’t know who’s the dumbest, him for posting it or people believing it!

kick him out and roll on arshavin and swp
with a new striker we could be great next season

  • 24 Chris // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:55

@ Davies. I was watching SSN and the reporter on there said it outside the court. He must of been at the hearing and said something about the judge considering a suspended sentence.
Don’t shoot the messenger mind mate. I don’t believe it either. If anyone’s got access to Sky Sports News it will probably be repeated just after 5′o’ clock.

  • 27 Magpie6699 // Jun 30, 2008 at 17:04

Presumably, if he gets a suspended sentence it’ll be on the basis of his previous character.
    Errr…

  • 34 steve // Jun 30, 2008 at 17:17

If he gets a suspended sentence part of the conditions should be that he’s not allowed to drink - he’s already blamed the fact he’s an alcoholic - tbh I can’t believe we didn’t do background checks on him, surely it wouldnt have been that hard to find out
jeez what was fat sam doing

As for Arshavin - no bloody chance

  • 35 Kash2 // Jun 30, 2008 at 17:19

I was sat in the toilet cubicle next to KK at the public toilets in the bigg market. While I was trying to put my willy in the hole of the sides of the cubicle, I overheard KK’s conversation on his mobile phone. He was telling Dennis Wise on the girth and odour of his huge dump and how Dennis was very similar to what was exiting his A-Hole.

As for Barton, He’s only really had 2 good games for us so lets get rid of him and get in a player that wants to play for us and not just be here to collect his wage packet

I live in Romania and just as i was walking to work today, i saw a black and white coach going by, it was that cross-eyed Wise driving, they almost hit a post, but back to my point, i saw KK in the back on the mobile and as they went by i saw they were pulling some cans and had a poster on the rear window: Moscow here we come!!!!!

    PREDICTION

He obviously just pleaded innocent to postpone the trial and stay out of jail until the end of the season. He will be out in time for preseason (This is the British justice system after all) and when he behaves himself for 6 months and is on the brink of the England squad, everyone at Newcastle will pat themslves on the back and say “weren’t we right to stand by him” even though we all really wanted rid of him.

He’ll start saying things like “rich footballers don’t know their living” and we’ll agree and think “we like joey, he’s salt of the earth like us, so what about his past, everyone gets into a scrap. The press are arseholes…”
Then he will rob a pensioner/ hit a baby/ eat a puppy and we’ll all say “sack him, sack him, he’s a bad egg” and some unwitting manager will spend big on him and the whole cycle will start again.

  • 57 Frankieboy // Jun 30, 2008 at 18:11

    Ed
The whole idea of changing the plea just prior to the start of the trial is done specifically to attempt TO stand you in good stead for sentencing. The idea is that the judge and prosecution and you and me who ultimately have paid for the waste of resources thus far are supposed to be relieved and grateful as to not incur further expense. It is also intended to instigate sympathy by allegedly showing the thug is remorseful for his actions. Also by entering a “guilty” plea at this late stage GUARANTEES any defendant a third reduction in any custodial senetence passed.
What I hope and what SHOULD happen is this thug is further sentenced to a couple of years custody to run “consecutive” to his present sentence ( this means his new sentence date will not commence until his release date of the sentence he is already serving) hope that makes sense to all.Add to this hopefully the court will make the thug liable for all the “costs” already incurred so far in the case and believe me it could be hundreds of thousands of pounds if not more. Please remember ME & YOU bloggers are all playing for the pleasure.
Time for the club to act now prior to sentencing tomorra. Please MA recover the clubs integrity and credibility in all this.
Also remember the thug has stated his innocence and lied for a year now and had the audacity to bite the innappropriate helping hand offered by way of accepting a pay cut as a gesture of regret.
I REST MY CASE YOUR HONOUR.
Hammer the bastard !!!.(Apologise to all for the language)

  • 58 Alex // Jun 30, 2008 at 18:12

If the moronic #w#t gets jailed he should not only be sacked but if possible , sued for the transfer sum that we payed for the scum , the club bought him to play football , if he is in jail he cant play .That is breach of contract surely!

  • 59 SuperShearer // Jun 30, 2008 at 18:13

Guys i have it in the back of my mind that we had some arrangement with Man City that if he was found guilty of the Dabo charge then we would get our transfer fee back from them. Does any one remember this or am I simply making these things up in my over imaginative brain?

  • 93 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:12

Normski, back in the 90’s bro’, it was mint!..

  • 94 Tom_Toon // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:13

That in list will change tomorrow because there are so many good players we could get in and narrowing them down is qute hard, thats why im not having a go at Wise yet.

The only player that is on all my lists is Hilbert, he could be our Ronaldo, i dont mean as in pace and skill etc i mean who assists and scores loads more than any of our other midfielders.

  • 95 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:16

I gotta agree with TT there like…Tho’ i’m not au fait with Hilbert!..Seems a balanced choice!..

  • 96 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:18

What’s goin’ on with Pandev these days?..

  • 97 normski1930z // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:28

you know what lads i have often wondered about the far east ie japan thailand china these places have millions and millions of ppl when i worked in thailand i used to get my football fix i used to watch like provinces against each other and one day about two years back there was this young kid playing for chonburi against nakon ratchasima and there was this young kid 17 years old playin for nakhon and am tellin ye he looked the biz,i talked to some of the locals and they sed his name was suppawit or something but at the same time he was playin a poor standard but surely there must be a superstar who come from over there soon.

  • 98 Tom_Toon // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:31

was he thai? Didnt he go to man city?

    Igonore this :)

  • 99 normski1930z // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:38

well am not sure but appently his father was english and his mother was thai … all i can say is he was about 6ft tall and he was head and shoulders above anything that i saw wen i was out there good on the floor and very strong he scored a goal from fully 30 yards on a really crap pitch but thats as much as can tell you…

  • 100 normski1930z // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:46

the thing about it was the company i work for is japanese and i spent time watchin the j league and i never saw anything as good as this kid, i was out there for 3 years in thailand japan and china and my wife and little boy were in england so i had alot of spare time on my own and im not much of drinker but i think this kid was something special….

  • 101 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 21:17

Didn’t ffs try to hook us into the far east scene?..
…Y’right tho’, there’ve gotta be tons of top players out there!..

  • 102 normski1930z // Jun 30, 2008 at 21:36

honestly tho punk skunk this kid was tryin to pull things off that the others players around him just couldnt comphend he was tellin them where to put the ball and he played with a big smile on his face which was so refreshing and when i talked to him in my broken thai the kid was down to earth, i mean when i was watchin the j league there were players that wouldnt get a game for the dog and duck but this kid was a total unknown so who knows…

  • 103 Sav // Jun 30, 2008 at 22:03

Barton, the shabby little prk waits until Dabo flies over from Rome and Pearce and Distin and Samras are all in their best bib and tucker.

    ……Goodnight, Joey.
    …..Goodnight, Bubba.

  • 104 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 22:06

Normski…That has got to be tapped into, as much for them to break into the world, as us to find top new players!..
…But, you know what the worlds like, we’ll probably end up usin’ cheap labour from the east like we do in manufacturing!?!..

How can anyone say Nas is better than Rakim when Nas does to Rakim, what Jay Z does to Biggie, he is heavily inspired by Rakim and you can hear it in his rhyming . He often samples Rakims lyrics in his well known tracks e.g. New York State of Mind -”i never sleep, coz sleep is the cousin of death”. Listen to ‘It Was Written’, ‘Illmatic’, and ‘God’s Son’ if you want to clearly hear for yourself as those albums demonstrate it best.

Jay Z is never overrated and his flow and lyrical content is up there with the best. People always knock his rhymes, stating they have no real substance, but the simple fact of the matter is he simply says what sells. Jay Z is fully able to fill his bars with conscious content much like rappers such as Mos Def, Common etc, but he simply chooses not to. He states this all the time. e.g. “they like ‘jay you should write it’, im like ‘you should buy it’, ni**er thats good business”. ‘Reasonable Doubt’ has a few tracks that many Nas fans would like as it is before he became super rich and his content is superb on numerous tracks.

Add to this, Jay Z’s freestyling technique is superb, unlike Nas who himself admitted he cannot freestyle to save his life. Jay Z in fact challenged Nas to a freestyle battle but Nas refused to compete in it.

i just read someone say Snoop Dogg was better than Jay Z and i have to say something. Snoop better than Jay Z is an odd statement i must say, Jay Z has a better flow, lyrical content, and freestyling technique than Snoop Dogg. Add to that Jay Z’s albums have remained at a fairly consistent level since his first, where as Snoops albums have only gotten progressively worse over the years as he simply jumps on the bandwagon of what is hot at the moment. e.g. Snoop Dogg - Sensual Seduction, is a single off of his latest Album ‘Ego Trippin’. In this song Snoop uses a vocal instrument that was recently brought to the forefront of the Urban music industry by Pop & R&B superstar, T-Pain.

Sorry to all the non Hip Hop fans on here, but i just had to get it off of my chest. :D
