Newcastle Will Not Sell Oba Martins

The Sunday Mirror reported yesterday that Newcastle’s Obafemi Martins has been told he can leave St James’ Park.

Oba Martins – yes – he’s just scored – again

We don’t believe that one little bit, but it seems you can’t stop the stories that keep coming out on Oba moving to Arsenal.

That bastion of truthful and fair journalism The Sun, jumps on the bandwagon today, with a load of – well let’s call it news to be polite – on Oba Martins moving to Arsenal – most of which is just not true.

Newcastle are said to be asking ₤15M for Oba, which is a decent price, but the Sun is still talking about a ₤13M release clause in his contract,  which former Chairman Chris Mort said long ago, no longer exists.

They should at least try to update their stories when they bring them out of cold storage – which seems a regular occurrence -  because things do change over time, after all.

The Sun says Arsenal have long been linked with Martins, but manager Arsene Wenger has refused to budge from his ₤11M evaluation of the former Inter Milan player, who cost Newcastle ₤10M a full 2 years ago.

Oba has since had 2 good seasons in the Premier League scoring 27 goals for the Tyneside club, and looked particularly good under Kevin Keegan at the end of last season..

The Sun is also reporting that a recently agreed to ₤80K per week deal for Oba was scrapped at the last moment by Newcastle, as they seek to cut their wage bill – but that’s news to us.

If Newcastle do let Martins go this summer, it would be a disaster and Newcastle fans would hardly be enamoured by the club’s actions.

Cutting the wage bill is one thing, because we have so many under-performing players at the club, but letting your best young and exciting talent leave, is a completely different matter.

Comments welcome.

No WAY!! I am not a least worried about Arsenal as the gonners themselves will not be willing to pay Martins salary. So for him to leave for Arsenal, impossible.

One of our best and exciting players in black & white.

Please get Smith off our wages and increase it for Oba!

I’m a bit sick and tired of this. As there are no real stories around the journo’s are printing who they would like to see join their club as a transfer story. The Arse are going to lose Adebyor to Chelsea or Inter, so all the journos who support them are now just speculating who they would like to see him replaced with. Personally, I can’t see Oba at arsenal he doesn’t seem to be their type of player.

I doubt that story about Arsenal is true, but on the other hand, Martins could leave. There is a rumor that is connecting him with Lazio in Serbian media (it looks like the story came from Kolarov who is playing for Lazio), but probably it is just one of those. Something is going on for sure, maybe not with Lazio and Arsenal, but there is a reason for all this stories in the press.

But tapir, if the management say Oba isnt for sale, then it means they have to do it tomorrow, for owen, Wednesday for Given, Thursday for Milner, Friday for NZogbia etc etc etc

Maybe the board are enjoying all this speculation, taking the heat off our real targets!

Well, we really dont have a clue as to MA’s plans and he certainly hasnt stated any ambition as yet. So he could end up being sold, no matter how insane that would seem to the rest of us… After all, wages seems to be MA’s main cutting focus these days and Oba are on high wages for all we know… Lets wait and see

Unless Adebayor leaves Arsenal I can’t see this happening, and even then Martins is a very different player to Adebayor. You’d think Wenger would want to get someone more like Adebayor.

Martins clause does still exist, he never signed a new contract and it wasn’t time bound.

The Owen clause ran out, but Oba still has a £13m release clause should he request a transfer.

What i cant understand about Arsenal wanting Oba is :

    a) Wenger rarely buys what the papers are saying, its always a surprise.

    b) Unless he changes his style of play, i would think Santa Cruz would be more suited.

    c) He does have this young Mexican kid back from Spain, who looks very promising and plays similar to Oba as a left sided striker.

Bottom line, i dont think Oba is a Wenger target and i hope Keegan doesnt want to sell.

When Chris Mort commented on the fact that Owen’s clause was no longer active, he said that they hoped to get Martins to sign a new deal removing his as well. Martins has not signed any new deal since those comments.

These Oba rumors are getting quite sickening. Wenger mentioned him once in his programme notes saying he would like to manage him one day, THAT’S IT! Unless he takes over the Super Eagles, it’s not gonna happen. No contact was ever made by Arsenal and Keegan had said that last month, and also said he wanted to keep his players, not let them go. I really wish the Club would come out and put this one to bed so I can sleep at night. If they do sell Oba it would give me one clear message: We’re planning for life in the Championship. Shaun Custis did the Sun article…………again! No surprises there, this dude needs to get a new job.

Newcastle have withdrawn Martins new contract offer which would have removed his buy out clause.

This is probably due to news out this morning that Ashley is looking to sell all or part share of the club:

Agree 100% i can deal with some players like Ramage and even Viduka due to wages and that and even he has cut our transfer budget from what he stated around 50 mill which is more near 20/30 now but selling the best players and exciting players like Martins is a no no.

Just read that post on trophy4toon forum.

It’s laughable how people will believe anything that because someone has posted it on the interweb then it’s fact.
“We are hearing that Ashley is looking for investors”
From whom, exactly? The famous “club insider” or his mate “a source close to Ashley”? If this was written in The Sun or The Mirror everyone would be pouring scorn on it, but it seems to be accepted as fact because it was posted by a toon fan.
Until there is an announcement at the stock exchange and it appears on the official site then I won’t believe any of the bollox about MA selling.
Jimenez is in dubai=selling the club to DIC. That must be one helluva job, in charge of scouting for players plus negotiating a fee for the club. 2+2 also equals 5.

Dont get me wrong, nothing would make me happier if Newcastle came out and made a statement about transfers and contracts.

But on the other hand, i agree with the stance of feeding the rags nothing. It really does make a refreshing change not to conduct our business in the press. Regarding Martins its simple, hes under contract and there are no bids yet to be confirmed, whats to say?

I just think a day before the transfer market opens, a week before pre-season and a number of weeks before the start of the season are we not getting carried away and may end up with egg on our faces, by shouting this and that and calling fans and players alike.

If at the beginning of the season we are looking desparate, then fine have a real good go at Ashley etc…..but now?

Give me this ownership over F.Shepard anyday!

Reports said that he agreed to a new offer. When you agree to something, it means something was offered first. If the Club offered him a new deal, then I find it hard to believe they took it back. Smoke and mirrors.

mickey toon they have been spotted in Dubai and the press have presumed it isnt for a player.

Usually people go there to raise funds or sell all or part of their business.

it is a holiday resort, possibly there is a player there.

    we will see.
