Newcastle May Let Milner Go - But At A Price

June 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 59 Comments

There is news on many sites today, that if Aston Villa do get the £18M they want from Liverpool, for Gareth Barry, they will go after Newcastle’s James Milner.

James Milner - still a target for Aston Villa

We don’t know if Aston Villa will get the £18M they want for Barry, but now that the player has said he wants to join Liverpool, that puts Villa in a weaker negotiating position.

They will know they will now need to sell, but of course will try to get the very highest amount from Liverpool, but we think this deal is almost a certainty to happen now.

Liverpool manager, Rafa Benitez, has already had a £15M bid for Barry rejected, and he is expected to increase that offer, so that it’s acceptable to Martin O’Neill.

Barry and Gerrard in central midfield should be just great for the Reds, as it has been for England, when the two have played together - they certainly seem to complement each other extremely well.

High on O’Neill’s wanted list is still England Under-21 international James Milner, who played for O’Neill for a full season at Villa from 2005-2006, and we think if O’Neill gives Newcastle an offer close to £9M, they’ll take it.

But whether Villa will offer that much is very questionable, although as Bobby Robson always said, every player has a price, and it looks like Milner’s price is £9M.

Liverpool are also after Milner, but we’re not sure if they are still interested, since they wanted a player exchange for James.

Newcastle seemed less than impressed with the players Liverpool offered to Newcastle for Milner.

But Newcastle’s official position is that Milner is not for sale, and Milner will no doubt be keen to know exactly where he fits into manager Kevin Keegan’s new plans for Newcastle.

Surprisingly, his agent is said to be wanting an improved contract for the Leeds-born player, but it’s hard to believe Newcastle will do that, since it was less than a year since his current deal was negotiated.

Comments welcome.

Knew this was coming and it will gain momentum when Barry does go!

  • 2 51times // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:43

If he does go, expect all those boring Brummy inbreds to come and give us sh*t about it.

  • 3 HeronMag // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:47

I don’t want him to leave, but if the right bid comes in (for me £10m+) we could let him go and reinvest in a more natural winger.

  • 4 Hadji // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:50

51 times….If they give us 9 mill for Milner they can come here anytime to cry about Barry.

  • 5 Hadrian // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:50

and do what with the the cash ?

  • 6 Spyro // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:51

the fact that liverpool are selling xabi alonso and getting barry shows how stupid rafa is

  • 7 mozza // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:51

we were at least 5 players short of a decent squad last season players have been shipped out allready selling oba or millner doesn’t make any sense at all unless you have ready made replacements who are better than them ready to sign the dotted lign now and if players do want to leave it’s a sign they think the club is heading no where, but once again this is yet more speculation and as entertainers said this one will gain momentum

  • 8 Spyro // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:52

Barry is worth maximum 10 million, another overpriced & overrated englishman

  • 9 Yorkie Dave // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:52

we will let him go at our peril!!!! he will turn out to be a great and we will have lost a great survant to our club!!!!

  • 10 gorskino10 // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:53

i dont think he is what we need so i would sell him at 8/10 mill would be great hopefully we can get another winger with the cash or put N Zogbia over at right so its like when Silva for Spain went to the right he can cut in on his left foot.

  • 11 Yorkie Dave // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:54

Barry aint worth a pot to p**s in!!!

  • 12 micepie // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:54

It’s often very pompous and annoying of other clubs when they value their players at high rates and low at ours. For example, Villa want 18M for Barry – who would probably have been valued at 6M just over a year ago – though I bet they’re not planning on paying 9M for Milner. Similarly, Arsenal are loathe to accept 25M for Adeboyor but “won’r pay 15M for Martins” (personally I don’t think we should sell Martins even at that price, anyway). Okay, Adebeyor is a better striker but even so.
And then there are a lot of other examples.

One player I think we should try for is SWP, and possibly Bullard. After a couple of experienced Prem players I’d be happy if we only sign players 18-21 like Evans and Derdiyok.

  • 13 Spyro // Jun 30, 2008 at 14:58

agree micepie…not about the bullard bit though, hate him

  • 14 DURhamTOON // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:15

Lads no one has mentioned Chamakh in a few weeks why has everything gone quiet on him am not reely bothered about him like its just a couple of weeks ago someone said he would be revealed the mora mabey with some others???? Tell me if i’ve missed something please…

  • 15 Dave // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:17

Spyro, how can you hate Jimmy Bullard?!!

Absolutely quality, in both humour and football!

  • 16 James // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:22

No to Evans - another trouble maker, was sent out on loan by Man Utd because he raped some girl at the Christmas do. Police couldn’t press charges further because the evidence had been messed with (whatever that means).

Milner can go at any price. Publicily stated he’d rather play for Liverpool than us. So see ya Milner.

  • 17 catawbamag // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:25

Milner has been jacked around by the club more than any player currently on the team. If they get 9 mil for him, which I doubt, fine. But who are they going to bring in? Some 20 year old bargain with potential? Great, just super.

The new board is in limbo right now concerning the transfer market. The inexperience is showing. How about a bit more focus on putting proven quality on the pitch, and a little less on good business.

  • 18 John // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:33

9 mill…Yes please..I’ll drive him there myself if we get that…..

Milner is over rated..Ya i know he’s young but i would say he is no better than Larsson..Sell Milner for 9 mill and buy Larsson for 4 mill…Brillant business

looks like Bartons pleaded guilty after all

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/7481822.stm

obviously worried about the slating he was about to get from his old team ‘mates’

  • 20 bettyswollocks // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:35

barton has changed his plea to guilty so I guess we should all know the outcome of that pretty soon.

  • 21 scottish mag // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:35

barton has just pleaded guilty for attack on dabo

  • 22 The Entertainers // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:36

    Interesting interview from Fergie today.

Firstly he stated that due to the Euros the transfer market has been very slow for most teams. Lets face it most teams have not signed anyone as yet, including us.

Then he was asked about Ronaldo and he declined to comment. Hang on is that what we are doing about Martins and Milner.

Theres nothing special or underhand about Newcastles approach lately, even Fergies taken a leaf out of our book!

Its better than acting like Beneitz and ONiell have been in the press

  • 23 catawbamag // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:37

Sounds like Joey copped a plea.

  • 24 Leo // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:38

milner didnt publicy say that he wanted to play for liverpool?

    BARTON PLEADS GUILTY……BBC

  • 26 ObaFan2 // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:40

Wow, guilty plea, wonder if SJP knew this before hand!

  • 27 The Entertainers // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:41

That now must mean most of next season will be written off for him.

Does this leave the club with only one real option?

We really are looking short in midfield all of a sudden!

  • 28 toooooon fan // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:41

    hello to everyone
i think milner is a great player and should stay at the club
    i think we should buy
    larsson
    cueller
    lennon
    bridge
    derdiyok

  • 29 The Entertainers // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:44

I wonder if his legal team agreed to lower the assault charge in return for a guilty plea?

Be interesting to see what kind of sentance he gets.

  • 30 scottish mag // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:44

i was just told that the reason that wise and jimenez are in dubia is to talk to PABLO AIMAR AND HIS AGENT about transfer to NUFC

although the guy that told me does wind me up sometimes, he did tell me about spear 2 days b4 all the websites reported it and last year told me about enrique b4 any of us knew it off the villareal website so he might be telling the truth this time, i hope he is aimar woud be a quality signing.

  • 31 chuck // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:47

Just where does Milner fit in to the side ?
Is he a winger ? No!
Cant cross, not a lot of pace.
    Defensive midfielder ? no!
    Playmaker, dont think so !
Look he`s not a bad player, but where do you put him, sort of like Smith only better.
I think if the club can get £8+ , go for it and buy a real winger, maybe SWP, but not Lennon
    please!

  • 32 scottish mag // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:47

” Joey Barton of Newcastle United Football Club has been found guilty of assualt on former Manchester City teamate Ousmane Dabo and has been sentenced to life in Sunderland”

well personally i think that sentence is a bit harsh, don’t you

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:50

what kind of an idiot pays anything over £8mil for Barry!

  • 34 Hadji // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:51

Hadrian….Many things man,for 10 mill we could get Matias Fernandez from Villareal who in my view is one of the most underrated players. He could be our Cristiano Ronaldo if given a proper chance.

  • 35 Tom_Toon // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:54

Buy Roberto Hilbert to replace Milner.

Full german international and miles better than Milner. Hilbert scores goals and can cross.

  • 36 Gooderz // Jun 30, 2008 at 15:55

Well that’s better then the Daily Mail’s interpretation of Jimenez’ Dubai trip. They believe he’s there to try and sell the club (or at least part of it) to potential investors on the basis ‘there aren’t any good players in the United Arab Emirates’. That’s despite the fact many footballers often go to Dubai at some point, either on holiday, training camps or to be conned by a fake Sheikh.

Now I wonder if Barton’s contract actually has a clause in it in regards this verdict. We’ll find out soon enough but I doubt it.

I do like the way the club is run now, though the painful slowness of everything should hopefully be relieved soon. There are only so many articles you can read on Geremi praising KK’s appointment, Beye being a star buy etc. I think we definitely should solidify the togetherness and feel-goodness of those 7 or 8 games late in the season last year but we all want to see more added to those foundations now. Barton is in his 2nd court case, so we should know one way or another whether we’ll sack or keep him, then we should also hear about renewed contracts for Taylor, Owen et al. And it’s the first day of Christmas tomorrow isn’t it?!!

  • 39 chuck // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:04

Milner, he`s a decent player, problem is where does he fit in to the side?
He is no winger, or for that matter either a defensive midfielder or playmaker, certainly better than Smith, but somewhat similar.
    Maybe as a super sub a`laJohn O`Shea.
But realisticly if an offer of £8+ comes in,grab it and buy a real winger, SWP perhaps, but certainly not Lennon, Please !

Looks like Bartons copped a plea bargain - either that or his Laywer said he has no chance of getting off - reckon he’ll be inside for all of next season tho

  • 43 andy // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:13

barton has to go now-he’s probably gonna get a year in jail, if he doesn’t, we’re gonna be paying him thousands of pounds for eating jail food and getting friendly with men in the showers

  • 44 micepie // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:13

p.s – yes, I know Bullard looks like one of Fagan’s grubby-faced urchins but he’s always seemed to play pretty well

  • 45 Black and White Blood // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:19

“Surprisingly, his agent is said to be wanting an improved contract “…….. Yeah that is strange, considering he does not use an agent, prefering to use the PFA to negotiate his contracts!!

  • 46 Faustino // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:21

Simple fact is Bullard was going now where the second Fulham stayed up he is to them what Shearer was to us. More bothered about playing for a club he loved than glory [well, aslong as it's in the Premier League.]

He’s got to get at least 6 months on top hasnt he so thats the full season.

All this contract balls has to be put right. There’s no way a professional football players contract prevents him from being binned if he spends a year in jail; specially seeing as it seems to be so easy for them to tear up if they fancy a move.

  • 47 catawbamag // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:22

I doubt Barton would pleaded guilty unless his mouthpiece cut some kind of deal.
I know zero about the court system in England, but I’d guess he’ll receive concurrent sentences.

  • 48 GM // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:27

@Catawbamag: You cant get concurrent sentences for different crimes committed at different times..i dont think anyway :)

  • 49 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jun 30, 2008 at 16:27

I would rather keep Milner than Geremi!!!
I feel if Milner was given a real chance in the team he would prove his potential, just proves milner has talent other wise liverpool and Villa wouldn’t be in for him!!!!

Dubai is one of the financial/business capitals of the world. Probs home to the HQs of a lot of Sports Agents due to obscene tax laws.

  • 53 Punk Skunk // Jun 30, 2008 at 17:32

Faustino, yea man, unless there’s a cheaper tax haven you’re prob bang on!..

  • 54 Gallowgate31 // Jun 30, 2008 at 18:40

Very disappointed if he goes, KK will bring out the potential in him that we have seen for so many years already,

I thought we were meant to be improving the squad ?

But If the bin dippers or villa want him then they can pay through the nose I say 13m……… lets have no more bowing down to the ‘bigger ‘ clubs, If you want our guys then pay, looks like the top 4 have they’re eyes on the six english rule which might happen….. what about ours ? One is sure to be banged up ( just pleaded guilty, so I reckon 2 - 3 years ) might be out in 15 months on ………..HA ! good behaviour…..

leaves US with Owen, Butt, Taylor, Smith ?…..

Need now to see some proper support from the owner.

  • 55 Neil W // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:27

We shouldn’t be selling young talented players!

We should be building a team and not selling the family jewels!

It will be VERY disappointing if we sell Milner 8-(

  • 56 craig // Jun 30, 2008 at 20:50

milner is a good player i will be very sad if we sold him I would rather sell n zogbia

  • 57 Sav // Jun 30, 2008 at 21:54

Well it could just all be bllx about Milner. Papers said he stated his desire to leave for ‘pool a week ago and I’m sure that’s rubbish.
Poor lad has certainly had the run-around by this club if we are going to flog him to Villa. I hope not. He is not so spectacular but far more consistent than either Lennon or SWP and will get better under KK after his first decent break in 2 years.

  • 58 Steven Edgar // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:36

O’niell didnt have him at Villa in 2005 for a full season! Yes he was at Villa but under David O’Bleary not Martin O’niell!!

    Thats whatyour article says^^^

  • 59 Nashville Geordie // Jul 1, 2008 at 12:31

I agree with Neil W. Newcastle are certainly not in the position of having extra talent! We desperately need players…not to sell the talented young, on-the-upswing players we currently have. This is the same issue we had with people’s discussing selling Steven Taylor. MADNESS! Anyone following our club understands that Milner has looked the fizzier if you will of our midfield players. He is a budding talent that we should continue to use.

By the way, where are our transfers? Surely we will add pace to our midfield, steel in our defense, and someone to play when Viduka misses most of next season, as he unfortunately seems fated to do?
