It seems that Newcastle did everything right in the way they signed Jonás Manuel Gutiérrez from RCD Mallorca today.
Jonas Gutierez – joined Newcastle United today
We hadn’t heard a squeak about this until this morning, when it was reported on Newcastle’s official web site, and when we looked through our archives over the last 14 months, we’ve never even been linked with the player.
But Portsmouth we know were interested in the player last summer, and the transfer amount then being banded about was around £4M, but we may never officially know the exact figure Newcastle paid, since Newcastle is now private.
Something around £4M would seem like a very decent price to pay for the Argentine International.
Gutierrez was born in July, 1983 in Roque Sáenz Peña, Argentina and turns 25 years old this coming Saturday, but he will be taking a little time off before joining Newcastle after playing for Argentina in some World Cup qualifying games – so will not be training this coming Monday.
Jonas has signed a 5 year deal at the club, and it seems to fit right in with Newcastle’s policy of trying to spot young talent, and then signing them to long term contracts at the club.
But we think most fans will be glad not only with the sigging, but also the way in which Newcastle did it, by saying nothing, before they came up with the goods. 😀
The last 10 days has been about the quietest we’ve known for a long time with news coming from the club, but as we had hoped last week, that’s because management is very busy after their transfer targets.
And that certainly seems the case with Jonas, and no doubt the first signing will lift the spirits of Newcastle’s faithful, after the last few days the news having been almost exclusively about all the bad stuff surrounding Joey Barton.
If Newcastle can keep signing players of the caliber of Gutierrez, we’ll have no problem at all.
Wonder when the next signing will be – but don’t be surprised if we sign somebody else before Monday – we hope so.
Somehow things seems a lot brighter today.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41great signing and great that the sites back up!
i havent herd anything about this being a “webster” deal … but i have herd a fee of around £4-6mil mentioned on other sites.
good deal and much better than milner who is being quoted as being worth £8-9mil, just shows how over inflated english players prices are!

Comment #42True Craig, but I am banking on the Martins being a vicious rumour, although Beresford mentioned it in an interview today which worried me, he said ‘if martins decides to stay’.
Dont want either of those players you mention to go.

Comment #65If he is a left winger doesn’t that make him a Duff replacement basically? How does this affect Zog?
His stats suggest he scores only about once every 20-25 appearances so I hope he is a good assist guy.

Comment #74broonale your theory could be right it’s defo lifted spirits today and this is a much more possitive type of signing than say the kluiverts signing of the past, young and hungry already saying he wants to prove himself to the fans not a past his best has been trophy signing on a massive wage
