Newcastle fans have been following the news of possible Newcastle signings for over 2 months now, and the first signing has come as a shock, be it a pleasant shock.

Jonas Gutierrez - Newcastle first summer signing
Not once have we been linked with Jonas Gutierrez this summer, and yet the club managed to sign him without letting the cat out of the bag, not even one paw could we see. Â
That’s good business by Newcastle, no doubt about it, but who exactly we are after now, or maybe a better way to put that - who we will sign this summer is now up in the air.
There’s a lot of silence surrounding the club but with 3 full time Newcastle Directors involved in the transfer business, and with Kevin at the center of it all, now he’s returned from holiday, and with owner Mike Ashley also involved, we sense there’s a lot of good hard work going on at Newcastle right now on the transfer front.
But it may be hard to know exactly who the next players through the door will be.
If we had to guess, we’d hope it was 20 year-old Eren Derdiyok, the 6′3″ Swiss striker who looked good in Euro 2008, and shows plenty of promise.
His club FC Basle want £6M and Newcastle are willing to offer £3M, so some negotiated price could easily be worked out there, maybe based on appearance money for the youngster.
We assume the Swede, Seb Larsson, who is also a right sided midfield player, will not be coming now, although, as we said earlier, you never know.
James Milner will be going nowhere either, unless a huge offer comes in for him, which Newcastle will then at least consider.
Maybe it’s another Argentinian in Pablo Aimar, who would be a good signing for the club.
But we have that distinct feeling, that our next signing is not too far away, and of course will come through the Newcastle United official site, as the news of the Gutierrez signing did this morning.
It seems that finally, things seem to be gathering speed in our transfer endeavors, and more good signings in the next few weeks will set us up for a successful season starting next month - hopefully.
Comments welcome.

Ronaldo next, the Real Madrid thing was just a smokescreen……
Not sure of the ins and outs of the Gutierrez deal but well done to Mallorca for not dropping us in it…..
2 robertsa // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:10
well maybe gutierez could persuade both collocini and aimar to come.
still hoping on derdiyok and evans.
ed what happened to mourane chamakh werent we ment to sign him yesterday. but although things are going smoothly now we still missed out on turan arshavin gomis they could have been mint.
and what about cuellar heard nothing of him in ages.
3 Ross // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:13
i dunno how i feel about the whole aimar speculation.
he would be a bad signing as such, but i’d preferr some young hungry player who could do the same job and only get better with time.
but to be honest, im not saying anything regarding transfers, rumours, or anything else regarding us this summer for that matter after today, haha.
howay the lads.

I love it Ed,
Your title is ‘All bets off’
and promptly name 3 players!
Keep up the good work mate
5 Hammy // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:16
Ed’s just hedging his bets by mentioning everybody that owns a pair of boots.
Keep up the tremendous work, by the way don’t you take holidays?
6 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:17
i am absoloutly over the moon with this signing, i remember thinking to myself last season cor i would love us to sign spiderman, when i was watching a mallorca game, i also wouldnt mind arango or guiza either, my cousins live in mallorca atm, they all think jonas is class also arango. its come as such a big shock, id be happy if all our deals were like this.
7 Wezside // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:18
haha, if ronaldo to real madrid was a smokescreen, who knows what next? Lampard to inter? Torres to Chelsea? Berbatov to Man Utd? We’ll have a dream team next season!
8 Danny // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:23
I’m not taking this as a sign that Newcastle are only after players that we do not know about….I think were still after some of the names mentioned!
I think there will be at least 3 deals in the pipeline maybe involving a center half, a central midfielder and maybe Eren Derdiyok.
I would not be surprised if the central midfielder we bring in is a defensive one…We all know Keegan likes creativity down the wings (hence Gutierrez) and a replacement for both Barton and Butt is needed badly.
Maybe Inler?…Hes a good player…
I have a feeling we will find out soon though…
9 autibo // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:23
Personally I’d like to see Torosidis to come in for about £4m as cover for both Beye and Enrique. I’d also love to see us grab Inler as DM from Udinese as I though he had a great Euro’s. Then we need either a CB to cover Taylor and Faye, or if we can get a real quality CB, we could replace either of our current ones (healthy competition). Then some pace and passing spark in midfield, aswell as Derdiyok and we’re in business
Great bit of business today, amazing how much one signings has changed the moods on these blogs. Keep up the good work all at NUFC, and the rest of us will KEEP THE FAITH
cheers

cant say i remember him from the brazil v argi game the other week , then again i was more interested in the other argi’s on show !
now lets just hope he settles , strange he didnt end up at pompy on the south coast , does he know what our winters are like ? and our summers for that matter !!!
this also go’s againts keegans ‘proven premiership’ that he wanted to get and has obviously been driven by vettere , but after kev’s go-ahead id think .
id feel more comfortable about south american players comming in a bit younger really , the day an aguero roll’s out of our youth academy would be a fine day indeed .
or failing that , we should be the first to take them of their south american clubs , alot of players the big boys will be letting mature over their before making a move , we should try and get there a year early , the likes of manu know some of the players they will buy years before they actually make a move , just let them sit and mature and keep an eye on them incase anyone else bids .
11 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:28
i hope we get inler
12 The Entertainers // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:30
I think a lot of what Keegan has said is complete rubbish and dont trust a word the man utters!
example:
a)We will buy premiership proven player
b) Wont buy South Americans
c) Only need 2-3 quality players
d) No wholesale changes
I know its all mind games and i’m a sucker for them, keep them guessing Kev!
13 gordond // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:30
Has this signing have anything to do with the tournament in Mallorca in August?
14 michael // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:32
Maybe we should be checking to see where Fat Freddy goes next. He was going to buy Mallorca wasn’t he?
The thing is that the recruitment team obviously have more imagination than the hacks purveying the same old rumours every day. So we aren’t chasing Arshavin and Arda for extortionate prices and banging our heads on brick walls. We’re signing members of the Argentine national squad for about what they are worth. Come on Vetere, Wise and Jimenez. Lets kick the Kevolution into overdive!
15 Kaler // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:32
Smart move would be to bid for Danny Guiza, Jonas helped make him the top scorer in Spain last season, looked good when he played at the euros, definately be a quality edition.

Great to see our first signing on only the 2nd day of the transfer window, he had a good write up after the Brazil game…
“Jonas Gutierrez: 7.0 / 10.0
Must have been surprised to get a starting role, but he was very impressive, and proved that he can play an important role for the side in the future.”
taken from Goal.com
If is starting for Argentina against Brazil in a world cup qualifer he MUST be good.
I can’t wait for the next signing Who will it be??

Danny , ramos was after him actually , had one to many today so cbh to fink the link , but yeah we was wanted by a few good clubs .
the fuss is its been done on the cheap for a player who was a driving force in helling mallorca to 7th last season , young , comming into his prime and being sellected for argantina along side some real quality players , obv comming into his prime .
just hope he settles .
check amazon , you can get the balck and white version of the spidey mask , lets all get ourselfs on and show up on match day with them to shop our new character the true geordie support .
deserves a post of its own ed , and a link to the mask , like i saide before , one to many and it would take me forever to track it down .

Q) So Spears why did you chose Newcastle United?
A) There are so many of my heros here
Q) Tell us who your heros at the club are?
A) Spiderman…hes waaaay cool man, i’ve got his posters and DVD’s, cant believe i’m gonna meet him!

49 Mad_Magpie // Jul 2, 2008 at 22:07
After Luque, Acuna, Bassedas and Gavilan I’ll always be slightly skeptical about foreign imports. He showed great quality in Spain but we have to remember how much more space and time on the ball you have there, a contrast to the Prem. Having said that flair players thrive under Kev and I am delighted are summer spending has started and hopefully we’ll see 4 or 5 more before September. Some quality defenders next please Wise!
50 ToonKing // Jul 2, 2008 at 22:07

why would this signing this signing mean the end of our pursuits for seb larsson? you can never have too many versatile wingers. to be honest, i would have rather had Seb than spidey. Seb’s younger, has EPL expirience and is arguably a better talent. not to mention the fact that it looks like we could have him for half the price of guttierez.
I’m just happy weve got a signing, hopefully we can still get both

109 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 3, 2008 at 0:12
Is it just me or does anyone else think Bolton are taking the pee by offering to take Barton on loan for a year as long we pay half of his wages. I don’t know if this has been mentioned on previous blogs as I have been otherwise occupied. As I see it we either keep him and play him or sack him but not subsidise him playing for another club. Sorry I know that Barton has been talked to death on the blog but this was getting up my nose a bit.
110 Hadrian // Jul 3, 2008 at 0:14
shearer ,if he whips some crosses in for that leap of oba’s , ill be more than happy , sellers and fox hardly prolific wingers , just got the ball in the six year box .
111 cooldj // Jul 3, 2008 at 0:28
anyone whos actually seen this guy:
is he any good? quick, creative ect what’s good and whats bad?
112 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 1:16
Arshavin will no doubt know top teams want his signature, therefore he will no longer want to come to nufc, and why should he? He can have a title contending team and european football. Anyway i would rather we sign younger players who wont simply use us as a stepping stone
113 geordiekk // Jul 3, 2008 at 1:45
nobody seems to be talkin about vdv in any of the tabloids i wonder where he is goin he was supposed to be unhappy and ready to leave hope we sign him doubtful i know but i can dream
114 S.PARKER // Jul 3, 2008 at 1:48
I watched his play against Barca and Real Madrid….
hey guys, can you imagine??
He had perfectedly kicked asses of Sergio Ramos and Abidal!!!!
115 Zarate4Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 3:44
seems Zarate’s Lazio move isnt’t done and dusted as of now. if we really wanna sign him the door may still be open. and i’m quite sure he prefers EPL to serie A … our answer to Tevez (and in my view younger and potentially better), more than useful backup as an out-and-out striker for Oba and technically shrewd enough to play like the recent Owen i.e. the shadow striker behind the front two. a much more worthy signing than Aimar.
116 51times // Jul 3, 2008 at 3:53
I’d love to sign Zarate too, but I don’t think the club are in for him. Then again when were we ever linked with Spiderman, lol.
117 craig chisholm // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:20
the papers say his old club or suing us for 12 million quid cos of some legal thing they are jumping on. Also that he is still partly owned by his old argentinian club. A bit like the tevez saga. It’ll get sorted i am sure, i think that newcastle would have looked into the deal very closely and covered every option. At least we know his value - 12 million!
i think we are in the clear cos the fifa rules say that any player under 28 can invoke a buy out clause in his contract if he has already served more than three years, i think its water tight.
118 ELFER // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:31
I bet our next signing will be INLER!
119 Chennai Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:59
@ elfer any news abt inler………………………wat about our bid
120 dougnufc // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:33
I would love to have Inler
121 k-man // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:41
I think he created 6 assists last season in Spain, 0 goals. Not much really. I’m not too fired up over this signing, and unless a Mallorca supporter comes in here and tells us that this guy is just awsome, I think I’ll just “wait and see” with this guy.
122 dougnufc // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:54

Apparently, he seems pretty good from this article
123 HeronMag // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:24
Has it been confirmed that Arshavin has gone to Chelsea?
124 Big Eazy // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:00
k-man- well if he was touted as one of the best players in La Liga last season by an expert in Spanish football he must not be that bad surely.
No need to be negative for the sake of being negative mate.
125 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:05
zarate is a good player and i like him alot, but he has an over inflated price tag.
126 GUSTAVO // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:10
Hello. i am a mallorca supporter. He is not a great player. You cant have seen him play if you think he good. waste of money. dont ever score. glad we sold him.
127 liamtoonbirchy // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:12
come on elfer spill the beans, what do ya know about inler????
128 Micky Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:17
There is no confirmation that Arshavin has gone to Chelsea, but it’s probably a fore gone conclusion. Abramovich is a big fan and has said he will pay big wages. Usually what abramovich wants he gets. Look at the Schevchenko(probably wrong spelling but you know who I mean!) situation. Maureen didn’t want him, but the owner did.
129 Micky Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:18
Also, it’s interesting all the people who had “inside information” on our first signing are now conspicuous by the absence.
130 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:21
Right its just me then.
131 Micky Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:23
SSN just said Chelsea have had a £12m bid for Arshavin accepted. £12m!!! Bloody bargain. Apparently he’s flying in today to sign.
They are also selling Drogba. No surprise there.
132 danny t // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:30
yawn. still bigging up your new signing? I dont think he is as an exciting signing as nasri, modric, dos santos, elmander. but hey , i suppose he is a good player compared to what you have.
Oh well i am off to the lane to greet toittenhams latest 2 big signings at 1;00.
133 HeronMag // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:40
Micky Toon - thought so, cheers mate.
Bill F - No mate, Bolton ARE taking the p*ss.
But they’ll prob get away with it.
134 ragzy // Jul 3, 2008 at 18:29
glad to see the club finally being diligent in the market, no more propaganda and gossip mongering a la sheppards administration, GOD BLESS MALLORCA if they get him as chairman!
