It seems that Newcastle did everything right in the way they signed Jonás Manuel Gutiérrez from RCD Mallorca today.

Jonas Gutierez - joined Newcastle United today
We hadn’t heard a squeak about this until this morning, when it was reported on Newcastle’s official web site, and when we looked through our archives over the last 14 months, we’ve never even been linked with the player.
But Portsmouth we know were interested in the player last summer, and the transfer amount then being banded about was around £4M, but we may never officially know the exact figure Newcastle paid, since Newcastle is now private.
Something around £4M would seem like a very decent price to pay for the Argentine International.
Gutierrez was born in July, 1983 in Roque Sáenz Peña, Argentina and turns 25 years old this coming Saturday, but he will be taking a little time off before joining Newcastle after playing for Argentina in some World Cup qualifying games - so will not be training this coming Monday.
Jonas has signed a 5 year deal at the club, and it seems to fit right in with Newcastle’s policy of trying to spot young talent, and then signing them to long term contracts at the club.
But we think most fans will be glad not only with the sigging, but also the way in which Newcastle did it, by saying nothing, before they came up with the goods.
The last 10 days has been about the quietest we’ve known for a long time with news coming from the club, but as we had hoped last week, that’s because management is very busy after their transfer targets.
And that certainly seems the case with Jonas, and no doubt the first signing will lift the spirits of Newcastle’s faithful, after the last few days the news having been almost exclusively about all the bad stuff surrounding Joey Barton.
If Newcastle can keep signing players of the caliber of Gutierrez, we’ll have no problem at all.
Wonder when the next signing will be - but don’t be surprised if we sign somebody else before Monday - we hope so.
Somehow things seems a lot brighter today.
Comments welcome.

Wasn’t he a free agent? I don’t know exactly, but I though his contract was running out with RCD Mallorca…anyway, fantastic signing and perfect job! nobody knew this not even one single journalist had an idea we could sing him, luv it!

Hopefully this signing shuts up all the negative morons on this site who have been slating the board for not making any signings or talking to the fans.
This proves they know how to conduct business away from the spotlight of the media and still sign quality players for the Toon
Excellent work by the recruit team.

The solution would be to optimize your applications to use less CPU.
Adding appropriate indeces to your SQL tables can often help reduce CPU.
Using static .html documents instead of painful .php scripts will practically eliminate CPU usage.
8 Andrew // Jul 2, 2008 at 14:45
Apparently he bought his own contract out!.

Glad you’re back again Ed.
What more can anyone say. I’m just pleased that our first signoing wasn’t Michael Dawson. Been poking about and this guy seems decent enough. Glad to have him.

who?
Never heard of him, but I’d never heard of Ginola or Robert before they came here so let’s hope he has a similar impact.
Well done NUFC, but don’t rest on your morals, more signings plz!
13 Tom_Toon // Jul 2, 2008 at 14:59
He bought his own contract ou usuing the webster clause, but portsmouth offerd £10mil for him in january, so i doubt its £4mil.
14 Seymour Butts // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:01
@ valle whats a WEBSTER?
been poking around also and this fella looks this business. exactly the sort of flair and creative spark weve been looking for. bit of a free player who can pop up on either wing or through the centre, pretty two footed with a good cross and an eye for goal. BACK OF THE NET! in regards to transfer fees, i think 4m may be a bit low - portsmouth were actually rumoured to have bidded 10, and citeh were also said to have bidded 7, so if it is 4 we can be very pleased.
15 Ross G // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:01
He bought out his own contact under the Webster ruling, which is basically an agreement a player has within his last year of his contract can appeal to buy there own contact out and become a free agent. Accordingly he was on a contract of around £15,000 at Mallorca which means his contract was bought for around £780,000, he would not be able to afford this so expect Newcastle to have paid this out, and probably give him a signing bonus too of around £500,000. So in that case we have signed him for around £1.5m on wages around £25,000 p/w. Hope this helps you all, he is not really a right winger by the way, he can play there but he plays on the LW and cuts in. He is technically very good the best at Mallorca, and he is strong also and best of all he is a team player working very hard for the side. Any other questions please post ill reply later
16 Seymour Butts // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:02
Tom toon in your extensive football knowledge how would you rate this player?
17 craig chisholm // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:03
James, i agree that this was a good way to do business.. .see i can say good things!! Does anyone know much about him, i see he has only scored 6 goals in 9 years like but is his assit ratio high? it must be i reckon. Is he a good signing? who has some good knowledge on him? i think maybe his is getting better as he is only just starting to break into the full argie squad now.
18 Seymour Butts // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:03
wow 1.5m ross g! thats pretty f**ing good!
19 Neil // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:06
What??? I don’t believe it - A signing that Alan Oliver didn’t link us with!!! Surely that is a first. He can’t even give us his usual sh!t of……”As revealed in later editions of last night’s chronicle” - Yeah Alan the one you printed for yourself you sad ugly git!
I don’t know enough about this lad to comment on how good he is - Like Petworth (DC) Mag I didn’t know anything about Robert or Ginola and look how they turned out.
1 signing down another 6 or 7 needed!!
Does anyone else think that this may’ve been a Jeff Vetere recommendation?

Great news and a namechange. More superheroes of this type please Mr Ashley and Co. Another similar 10 signings would only cost 15m now that would be good business.
22 Stami // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:17

24 James // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:19
The important to remember about this signing and any others is…IGNORE WHAT THEY DID AT OTHER CLUBS.
KK Always makes a player better than he is. He gives them a confidence and swagger that they won’t have showed at previous clubs

Fernando, many a true word said in jest!!!!!
We do want good players and we want the season tickets and merchandise to fly off the shelf so the club can afford to invest more heavily in the team and the owner wants to keep it.

great signing and great that the sites back up!
i havent herd anything about this being a “webster” deal … but i have herd a fee of around £4-6mil mentioned on other sites.
good deal and much better than milner who is being quoted as being worth £8-9mil, just shows how over inflated english players prices are!
42 Ian // Jul 2, 2008 at 15:47
True Craig, but I am banking on the Martins being a vicious rumour, although Beresford mentioned it in an interview today which worried me, he said ‘if martins decides to stay’.

got a feeling that he isnt signed to play out-and-out winger. seems more a natural RW but actually plays more often on the left. he looks strong and hardworking so guess he can play well through the middle too. consider that we tried to get Modric and Arda before it seems it’s our 3rd and finally successful attempt to get an all-action free attacking midfielder in a 3 or 4 men midfield. if true that indicates an interesting lineup we will have coming season.

The question has to be, how long does he keep his spidey mask down his sweaty krackers?
What a smell, the inside must be!
No wonder he doesnt want to score another goal for a while!
122 The Entertainers // Jul 2, 2008 at 19:45
Apparently we are signing the Hulk next week, just to keep young Joey in line.
123 Lull // Jul 2, 2008 at 19:55
@Entertainers - lol…u’re a one sick man
124 geordiekk // Jul 2, 2008 at 20:32
i support the toon - what was the name of the restaurant i live next to the training ground
125 Slam Dunc // Jul 2, 2008 at 20:54
i support the toon comment 94 and Geordie kk.
Err, yes I know the training ground well, it’s at Little Benton.
I would say that the nearest restaurant to Little Benton is probably about 5 miles away so that was some long walk Shaun Wright-Phillips was undertaking.
Did anyone else see him walking down the road, it must have taken him about 2 hours ???
126 geordiekk // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:00
no casa antonio’s as a 5 minute walk from the training ground i live in benton
127 geordiekk // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:00

128 nufc09 // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:11

129 Raghav // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:19
Now dat we have got him we should sell shitty Milner right away.Milner is really pathetic ,hasn’t got ant quality watso ever in his crosses.Hope we get more of argentine, funny thinking keegan said he wouldnt like to bring any southamerican his first signing is an argentine.Hope we go after Aimar, collocini ,Palacio .Hope da flood is coming soon.
130 Slam Dunc // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:20
oh, are they down towards the Black Bull or down Forest Hall way then ?
I take it all back but wonder why he’d be walking round there anyway unless he got the Metro from town.
Maybe Ashley’s cost cutting is getting deeper than we thought, the players are getting the Metro to training!!
131 The black in the blacknwhite // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:25
Im happy with the way were doing business….professional
from what i saw of his website, good first touch (have to have one of those to get in the argentine team- pacy- and i think will get us penalties (put it away Mickey Mouse- spiderman has laid on a plat for you…
we need a player in midfield now that can keep the ball- elegantly as well as agressively when needed (an Ince in his prime if you will) to protect the damn defence- which i think just needs cover now-
2 new midfielders (in case we need to revert to 442, for tactical or strategic reasons)
1 striker- to cover the Duke primarily
1 Full Back back
that makes 4 = Spiddy il be happy
and i think so will the toon, if kegeen is fully happy with the purchase- i think it is pretty clear he has the final say on these matters iven if he is not the instigator
i vv ben a bit quite lads-coz im working like a dog- neeed a car man!!!
132 The black in the blacknwhite // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:29
+spiddy should make 5 signings… thats what i meant 5 signings is not bad, rmember the summer of 95, Ginola, Ferdinand , and one other was all we needed and were wer challenging for the top
133 nufc09 // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:32
amicis is forest hall way and casa’s is next to the black bull, lol could get off at benton and walk up the road
134 Petworth (DC) Mag // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:39
Here you are Seymour and anyone else who enjoys winding up those silly big headed yids. http://www.caughtoffside.com/2008/07/02/newcastle-clinch-9m-argentine-pompey-and-spurs-miss-out/
I realize it’s not a spud’s site necessarily but it shows up on their newsnow feed and they certainly reacted to it…hahaha
Come on then Geoffo, who’s next? Shame about Zarate I was quietly optimistic (someone needs a name change)
135 geordiekk // Jul 2, 2008 at 21:39
casa’s is inbetween the black bull and the training ground can get food in the ship as well next door
136 Slam Dunc // Jul 2, 2008 at 23:01
Shaun wright-phillips calls into The Ship for a pint maybe on the way to training. Well I used to do that when I played football at Little Benton before Newcastle bought it, so why not !!!
137 geordiekk // Jul 2, 2008 at 23:02
heard he went on a pub crawl through longbenton first
138 Slam Dunc // Jul 2, 2008 at 23:30
guess Michael Owen could ride his horse to training, be quicker than walking.
139 Leo // Jul 2, 2008 at 23:57
there are soo many black bull pubs, hears a bit of something for ya, i used to do school games lessons at the little benton ground before nufc bought the place off our school, the school was based in gosforth and we got a bus to games lesson, how mad eh lol
i saw pictures of what the place is like now and its soo luxurious now compared to what it was like during the time of private schooling there in the cold showers after rolling into a mudbath after rugby and football
oooh the times
140 Slam Dunc // Jul 3, 2008 at 0:05
Interesting Leo but Little Benton was the Civil Service Sports Ground which the Government sold off to Newcastle to raise some cash.
Are you doubting our Geordie credentials and local knowledge ??
141 Leo // Jul 3, 2008 at 0:11
no not doubting your local knowledge at all mate i dont know that area of town what so ever im a countrysider if im honest lol. our school must have been lying lol
hated doing cross country there especially that terrible time in august when it rained for weeks none stop lol… what year was that?
142 SwedeEric // Jul 3, 2008 at 2:03
DOn´t know how it looks at the training ground… But have a hard time seeing SWP walk by his own outside there… If it´s not Toooooon fan, then it´s someone like him…
143 tapir // Jul 3, 2008 at 3:33
But Mallorca opened legal proceedings against the 24-year-old for walking out on them and have demanded £12million in compensation.
========
is this true??
144 Frankieboy // Jul 3, 2008 at 5:57
Been saying it all along MA knows how to conduct business. This was done the tried and tested Arsenal way.
145 UTD111 // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:16
SWP might have had a pie in the Ship
146 Archie Brand // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:59
A player who scores on average once every 18 months - even Bramble did better than that!
Obviously we havent bought him for his goalscoring ability.
Brilliant that this one was totally unexpected and not second guessed.
Hopefully all those to55ers who have been having a go at Ashley for being an opportunistic tight wad will back off a bit and let the club get on with business.
147 Wayne // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:26
As Michael owen is shown of the new second kit do we think this means he has signed a new deal same as taylor?
148 craig chisholm // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:31
Yep its true, his old club are taking us to court for 12 million, plus also some sort of problem about him still being part owned by his old club in argentina - aka, tevez saga. Mind you, i think that (hope that) newcastle did their home work first on this deal and that they covered all the legal issues. I tihnk the the Fifa clause regaridng the player being under 28 and having served over three years at his current club means that he can activate is own buy out. This must be what he has done. I hope that he had enough of his own money to do this and that we did not give him the money on the sly to do it. Its good business though, we must be loosing a left winger now though for sure, i hope its duffers and not zogs. I think that this move will now allow zogs to move middle left and he will become our aimar, next to barton - yes, i think barton will stay. We need a right winger to as allow milner to cover for left sometimes and we need a left back and tall target man, ie- crouch.
149 Ian // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:48
Craig agree i hope it isnt Zog as he scores more than the new player, ideally we could do with them both on the pitch and that would be an improvement.
My tall target man would be Cisse, cheaper faster and a higher scoring record. 36 or 37 goals in a season and half.
150 Ian // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:50
Wayne-hope se re-Owen and kit, but what about Martins??? Dont like that Arsenal striker up to £24m and they are going to raise the offer, thats £9m+ and Martins, hope it is all rubbish.
151 craig chisholm // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:01
you are right mate, cisse is shit hot. i keep forgetting about him.
Wayne - as far as i was aware, taylor aint signed a deal yet - he just said he was pleased mike ashley was getting involved, thats where it was left i think. i am sure it will get done though.
152 Wayne // Jul 3, 2008 at 11:13
