Reports That Newcastle Closer To Inler Deal

July 3rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 176 Comments

The Mail today are reporting that Newcastle’s move for Swiss International midfielder, Gokhan Inler, is getting closer to completion.

gokhan-inler-54.jpg

Gokhan Inler - Newcastle getting close?

We had reported early yesterday that Dennis Wise had visited Switzerland to talk about a deal for the impressive Swiss International Gokhan Inler.

Today the Mail is adding to that, by saying the Dennis Wise has indeed had talks with Inler’s agent, Dino Lamberti, and that Newcastle are getting close to signing the midfielder for around £4M.

Middlesbrough are also said to be interested in the Swiss Euro 2008 star, but the Mail is  reporting that Newcastle are in the driver’s seat.

There were multiple reports in the Swiss newspapers yesterday that we reported on, and the fee in those reports was said to be around 10M euros – which is around £7.9M. That amount was said to be in the release clause of his contract.

That did seem a lot of money for the 24 year-old, but £4M also seems, if anything, too little, but it would be a great deal for Newcastle if they could get him for that amount.

His club is Udinese Calcio in the Spanish league, and he’s been there since last summer, and played 32 times for them last season scoring 3 goals. Inler was at FC Zurich before joining Udinese.

We stress that we cannot confirm this news to be true, but we hope it is true, and that we can indeed get the 6 ft Swiss midfielder, who is from Turkish descent, for around £4m.

That would be another excellent deal for the club, to go with our terrific recruitment of Jonas Gutierrez yesterday.

We do expect at least one new signing before next Monday, when pre-season starts at the club.

Comments welcome.

Serie A Ed, not La Liga :)

I’d be very happy with this deal…hopefully it’s not just media b*llocks.

  • 2 ende // Jul 3, 2008 at 5:53 PM

    Keep bringing ‘em in!

  • 3 Ben_BKK // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Udinese is in Italy, not Spain :P Also love the photo you chose, great way to endorse our next potential signing ;)

Would love it if we manage to sign this guy, he’s the central midfielder that we really need to get in…

  • 4 robertsa // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:02 PM

    nope not for me

  • 5 matty_g // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Really hope we get him, looked awesome in the Euros for someone who is still quite young.

  • 6 Ben_BKK // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Inler is a DM, how can you talk about preferring CBs over a DM? Are you saying the signings of either are mutually exclusive? ;)

  • 7 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Absolutely amazing DM, £4mil, is that a joke, hes worth 10!

  • 8 Ally // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Whats he like i have seen very little of him?

  • 9 toon4life // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:05 PM

robertsa mate just to confirm hes a midfielder not a centre back so he wouldnt be like boumsong or rozehnal.
great potential..iliked him at the euros would be a steal at 4mil :)

  • 10 looney_toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:06 PM

i never heard of him till yesterday – wot type of midfielder is he – a DM or AM or box-to-box player?

  • 11 matty_g // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:07 PM

off topic – but apparently an unnamed English club have made a move for Pavlyuchenko -according to Setanta sports news.

  • 12 Ben_BKK // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:08 PM

I see you’ve changed your post now robertsa :P

  • 13 Ross G // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:10 PM

OMG – Udinese in Spain do you actually read before you print. You certainly prove your extensive knowledge of football, im glad this blog has such an expert behind it.

  • 14 Ben_BKK // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:10 PM

looney_toon, do you read the rest of the posts before you write something?

around 3 people, including myself, have mentioned that Inler is a DM

  • 15 Davies // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:12 PM

Looked good in the Euros, but I don’t really know much about him. Great picture though.

  • 16 Bob // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:19 PM

The Mail is crap….I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • 17 Wezside // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Ed – don’t listen to these people that try slag you off, honestly – hes doing a great job on this site, and you just seem to take for granted the effort that is put into a site like this. Ed keep up the great work!

  • 18 Ross // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

cant say i’ve seen enough of him to comment.
a spanish italian defensive midfielder centerback?
sounds impressive, for 4mil with maybe another 7.9 or 10 added on there? sounds like a superhero, and we’ve signed spiderman yesterday, so why not :D
haha, seriously though, i cant remember seeing him play so i cant comment, seems to get a pretty positive reaction around here though!

  • 19 scott9 // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:24 PM

bloody hell iv been away for 4 days not heard anything as i aint been on a computer came bak today were signing some great players get in up the toon

  • 20 Hammy // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Well said Wezside, Ross G may be a tad harsh on Ed there. You don’t develop a site like this from scratch and achieve over 5 million hits in just over a year by being a mug……which Ed certainly isn’t. This is the one stop shop for Newcastle blog and it’s that good we even get rival fans on spouting their crap.
    Praise Ed.

  • 21 Neil // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

I can’t believe we’re still getting these stories here. Why would anyone pass any mention of what the Mail had to say, especially given yesterday’s happenings.

  • 22 Danny G // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Should be a good deal for either 4 million or 10 million….

As Tom_Toon said hes worth 10!

A pretty dynamic midfielder who can also pop them in the top corner too…lol

I like it when we are linked to genuinely good players and not just journeymen from the big clubs…

  • 23 Davies // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Ross G, don’t be a knob all your life.

  • 24 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

its a great feeling when it happens like that huh Scott9

  • 25 Danny G // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Yeah Ed I love this blog mate….it’s been bookmarked for months!

    Keep up the excellent work….

  • 26 Hadji // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Ed don’t worry my dear friend, sometimes i get blocked and i actually forget my real name :-)

I’m sure that with all these fast activities which we’ve been ocupied in the last 2 days made you mix the Calcio with Primera.
Good job Ed,i spend almost 30% of my time visiting your blog,

  • 27 GraemeR // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Inlar and Derdiyok and my weekend would be complete. Then theres Manures Evans – its starting to look up and SpecialK will be able to weave his magic once again.

  • 28 Mad_Magpie // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Agreed, this site keeps me sane through the day.

As for Inler, he would be a steal at 4 million, but a link to a Turkish site someone posted earlier mentioned something about Barcelona, and if they’re really interested it would be a blow.

  • 29 Matt // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:35 PM

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6z4HIBEOvM

Not a bad goal if anyone’s interested. He looks pretty handy.

  • 30 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:38 PM

i like Inler, but i dont think we are really after him, i think NUFC are simply inquiring about loads of quality players so that the media cannot figure out who we are really after. That way tottenham, portsmouth, villa and everton can’t snatch them just before we sign them.

Probably the best way to throw the media off is to inquire and let them link us to everyone, then when they get complacent we swoop in for the kill

  • 31 david gordon // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:41 PM

u bein serious they signed mad_magpie

  • 32 keith // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:53 PM

Just for the record great site, nearly broke my heart when it was down as i though work had blocked it on me! Dont have time really at home with the little kid and the misses so my work life gets affect! But its worth, Yeah he looks like a good buy and IF the I Aimer deal goes through we would have a good midfield pairing their

  • 33 ende // Jul 3, 2008 at 6:54 PM

  • 36 Marc Hottiger // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:11 PM

I’d also like to praise Ed for his dedication as well as the majority of the posters on this site for the banter, discussion and general good humour. I spend a lot of time on this site and I prefer the message boards on here to the ones on the BBC website.

To respond to some criticism of myself earlier today I can only apologise if some of my posts have grated, a lot are written spur of the moment like the one where I thought we’d signed Aimar. In future I am going to be more careful and read through what I write before I send it.

    Keep up the good work!

  • 37 euanpolo // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I’ve heard that newcastle have lodged a $6.8m bid for Pavluychenko. On Setanta Sports News it confirms that an unamed club are interested in him. Hopefully it is us! It also sais on there that Aimar’s agent is waiting for a phone call from an unamed club. Lets hope that is us as well!

  • 38 xfer // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Great technique in that youtube link.

  • 39 Terry // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Ross G is right. Ed does a good job but he screws up nearly every article, I’ve told him a million times to proofread and he still doesn’t do it because he’s too obsessive over putting up as many articles as possible no matter how crap they are, and getting as many hits as possible.

  • 40 harrier // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Terry it has nothing to do with hits – Ed is giving us a service that bridges the gap between gossip columns and official news, its a free service and he obviously spends a lot of time in his day doing it. I like it because it gives us newcastle fans a common place to discuss the gossip and rumours and news as they break. Respect Ed! :-)

  • 41 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:26 PM

serious question, if you dont like Ed’s constant goofs then why do you return?

  • 42 geordiekk // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:27 PM

people complain all the time i just dont get it if you dont like it dont come on the site simple as that instead of moaning on all the time its boring

  • 43 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:28 PM

exactly harrier, and most of the mistakes made by Ed are little things like spelling mistakes, things we can all overlook, but some want it absolutely perfect, why does it matter, if you can correct him then you obviously know what Ed was trying to say…so why complain? it is beyond me

  • 44 harrier // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM

by the way i haven’t been on for a few days – WOOOO WE SIGNED SOMEONE :D :D

(and doubters of secret transfers who have been arguing with me for a month can kiss my hairy arse)

  • 45 Spyro // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:35 PM

harrier when people say secret signing i think they generally mean a player who has signed, but the club just didnt announce it. Gutierrez was announced on the day he was signed i think so i dont think that counts

  • 46 Slam Dunc // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:44 PM

Ed does a great job, the ultimate in reporting on what is being reported about Newcastle. And Ed what is this new signing you are expecting before training next Monday ??

Ross G, tell us about your website that won 3rd prize for best Newcastle website, is it still viewable and why did you give it up ??

  • 47 Mad_Magpie // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:53 PM

euanpolo – where did you hear about our bid for Pavlyuchenko and the unnamed club is probably Chelsea anyway. We did enquire about him before the Euros but that price has now doubled, as was the case with Arshavin. We would be behind a host of higher profile clubs anyway.

  • 48 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Is it totally dream thinking that we should at least TRY for Diego?… The guy has slated his teammate in public and wants a move and with the big teams looking elsewhere for midfeilders we could have a shot…. or?

    Imagine this

    ………….Harper…………….

    Beye..Faye..Cuellar..Bridge

    …………….Inler…………..
    Jonas……………………Mcgeady
    …………….Diego………….

    …….Owen……..Gomez…….

That team would make top 6 with a good chance of a push for top 4 next season imo… Just a little guessing and dreaming, comes with the silly season i guess.

  • 49 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Mad magpie, they said it was an average eurpean club.

I recon spurs would try for him if Berbatov left, hes the closest thing i’ve seen to berbatov recently. Hpe its us though, but id settle for Derdiyok who is 7 years younger.

  • 50 Nev // Jul 3, 2008 at 7:56 PM

there is no other site on the web were newcastle fans can banter and shout abuse at each other like we do on here ?
evryone will say BBC! but who would go on that site with a headline everyother day and spurs and man u fans spamming the message board.
this is prob one of my fave websites and keeps me up to date with everything concerning nufc.
    keep up good work ed!

  • 51 walker // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:00 PM

agree with all supporting ed on here . top site.all those perfect people having a go shame on you.

  • 52 micepie // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:01 PM

I’m usually very positive about ANY signings we make, but I’m purty glad Fedinand has “ruled himself out of a Toon move”. Had we have been interested. Even my friend who is a Stammers fan said some while ago “you can have him!”

  • 53 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:07 PM

We might have to spoke to his agent but he could be one of several targets. If they are all similar quality then we should be a good team newt season. :D

  • 54 ende // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:09 PM

It’s Ed’s blog, he can do as he damn well pleases. With that said, we the readers may or may not choose to continue reading his blog at our discretion. It’s in Ed’s interest to derive feedback out of everything from constructive suggestions to aggressive criticism.

Some friendly praise here and there wouldn’t hurt though. He’s spending his own personal time doing this for us. Appreciate it. :)

Ed for prezzy!! this site is amazing. dont comment much but i come here at least twice a day.

dont kno much about Inler, but we had a good start with Gutierrez. only way is up.

  • 58 gorskino // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:14 PM

yay this means no place for geremi yay next dirdiyok and a defender

  • 59 David Elliston // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:18 PM

This actually sounds like a shore investment. He is young obviously full of quality, looked good in the euro tournment. He possesses all the required skills to cut balls out which is firstly the most important and influential role in a defensive midfield role. Butt is goods but does not possess that quality. Therefore with a continental background his technical abailty should be good aswell. This means for the premiership he will certainly hold the ball well and make us a strong team to try and break down. Just like the Swiss!!!! Kepp up the involvment as only good players are being linked. Stay away from the english players though. None are good enough that are available although i would sneak a bid in for barry if possible.

  • 60 Matthew // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:20 PM

The Mail have got the story from Swiss newspaper Blick that ran the story yesterday.

His agent confirms Wise met up with him in Zurich and said “Yes, it is true that Newcastle are interested in Gögi. But he will only leave if it really true for him. “

  • 61 dacvid toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:25 PM

we should be checking into signing vadim demidov from rosenborg.i watched him live lastnite for the 5th time and again he was outstanding.he,s a cb but can also play dm.he,s a full norwegian international and he,s only 21.a born leader at that.constantly talking and bossing senior pros around.rosenborg just signed him this season from a lower division and he,s been amazing.rumour has it some top russian and decent italian clubs are in for him.get him know.

  • 62 The Entertainers // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:26 PM

This lad would be a great signing. From the little i have observed he started of as a winger before moving into the centre of midfield.

He appartenly was excellent in Italy / Spain (ha ha) last season and won some kind of foriegner award in the italian league.

    P.S

I love Ed’s little mistakes and errors. Hes a fan not an editor and it wouldnt be the same if all Eds work was correct.

Keep up the good work and dont worry about your mistakes and spelins!

  • 63 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Unfortunately Ed can’t become President, due to his heritage. Although I am half expecting a change in the constitution so that Arnie can run. So you never know.
I always see the mickey taking of Eds occaisional spelling mistakes as a bit of fun, if I thought it was causing offence then I wouldn’t do it.
I remember one correction I pointed out ie Tenter hooks instead of Tender Hooks where he came back brilliantly with the complete definition of the term and its origin. He didn’t strike me as someone who takes life to seriously. As Valle said earlier he is big enough to stick up for himself if he feels the need.

  • 64 Neil stewart // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

he will signed in the next 2-3 days for a fee of around 4-6 m

  • 65 Neville Brewis // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:37 PM

My nephew Eric Cedric Brewis has told me this lad Inler is very good. He also told me about Jimmy Greaves a couple of years ago, so he knows a good player.Hope we sign him, and that he encourages the young Argentine to get his haircut.

  • 67 Obafan // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:40 PM

I hope the last comment about complaining Ed his articles has been typed and posted. If you don’t like it here, then never come back or make your own blog and then just hope that you get half of the visitors that Ed has got and you should be pleased.

So ED KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! The blog is the first site I check because I like it very much.

  • 68 Neville Brewis // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:43 PM

  • 69 Nick C // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Yes, I heartily agree Neville you roister doister.

Ed is the man. He has childlike naivety when talking about the Toon, and sometimes makes childlike errors. However, if you read his CV, I think you will find he knows his stuff…
    All detractors, SHUT YA DIALS!!!!

  • 70 Neville Brewis // Jul 3, 2008 at 8:58 PM

  • 71 Magpie6699 // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:17 PM

What’s the chance that ALL the names we’ve been linked with don’t happen – but when we hear about “done deals” only, each one comes as a surprise? Personally, I think that’s unlikely because the press have used a scatter-gun approach and “peppered” so many players they’re bound to get lucky sometime!

  • 72 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Back to the football then… This Inler guy, how would you rate him compared to other top DM’s?, would he be among the best DM’s in this league, or would he simply be better than what we have and shpould be bought for that reason?… Those of you that know him, try to give an honest view and dont get coulered by the fact that he seems to be ours.

  • 73 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:24 PM

He could easily play for a top 4 club, im amazed arsenal arent after him with them wanting a dm.

Very stead and comfortable in possesion, can spread play nicely with long passes, break up attacks well and he has a mean shot.

  • 74 KlyToon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:24 PM

Completely off topic but I am becoming increasingly irritated by the halfwits who post on here. “OMG check your sources”, “This blog has gone downhill”, “Clearly not a professional” are some of the criticisms aimed at Ed. I have been reading this blog for many moons. I lost it momentarily when there was all the cuffufle about the domain and all. I would seem most of the eejits are from the UK (as am I, I hasten to add). One question to all the UK detractors; Do you not think it slightly perturbing that a gentleman, state-side, is able to keep up with all the GOSSIP and RUMOUR much, much better than anyone in the UK? Stop sniping, Ed has NEVER expressed anything but his opinion and I, for one, applaud him for that. Cheers Ed, if it wasn’t for you my days at work would be a truely dull experience!

  • 75 CRAIGG // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Tom_Toon i dont think it really matters how good he is DMs shouldnt be an imidiate priority, We need a creative attacking midfielder to replace Emre.

I saw something on here that an unnamed english club had bid for Affellay probably Arsenal, But who knows.

  • 76 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:32 PM

ye, that was me who reported it.

We need both, a dm is a great prority too, i think RB is Geremi’s best position and ButT is 34.

  • 77 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:32 PM

Tom Toon… Sounds good, if we are ever going to try for top 4, we need top 4 players… Would he be the best DM we could get in the current marktet then, and if you should compare him to Macherano for instance how far would you say he is of him?

  • 78 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:34 PM

If an absolute TOP CLASS dm is on the market and we could get him, and we have a hard time getting an am atm, then i see no wrong in going for the dm first.

  • 79 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:35 PM

And btw, allot of you guys were over the moon about Veloso who is also dm, so how is he compared to Veloso… Which of those 2 would you rather have, if money wasnt an issue?

  • 80 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:37 PM

Well IMO Mascherano is probably the best DM in the world, hes not a run around like mad player like Mascherano but Inler gets the job done, hes not too far off Mascherano though.

Hmm value for money £8mil compared to £18mil and on current form is proportion id rather have Inler by a long long way, however id settle for either but dont think Veloso would come.

  • 81 CRAIGG // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Veloso, He would give us more balance in midfield, But i still think we need an attacking midfielder.

    Milner/Guttierez —Barton—Veloso—N’Zogbia/Gutierrez

  • 82 Magpie6699 // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:42 PM

  • 84 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Ok… His name has come out of the blue for me, i didnt watch the swiss games and i dont like serie A even tho i can see it on canal plus… Speaking of AM’s, any one out there like him, who have top class and i might not had heard of?… I was mentioning Diego earlier, but i doubt we could get him, though he has slated his team in public… Cant really think of any absolute class AM’s available besides him and VDV tho, so who could set the EPL 0n fire for us?

  • 85 CRAIGG // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:48 PM

It is very Cliquey on here especially when theres some KK bashing going on

  • 86 CRAIGG // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:51 PM

    AFELLAY AFFELLAY AFFELLAY AFFELAY

Fits in to the strategy on youngsters, Great AM and can cover us really well on the left and right (Especially the left cutting in on his right foot)

A bit steep money wise but a mega cut above any of our CMs

  • 87 tam toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:52 PM

Does not matter who we get first ,if they are out there -are quality available and want to sign go get them. We need back up rb lb two quality cb’s that can walk into the team. Two midfielders (one goalscoring )and 2 strikers. Lads are right about Inler , got some mates that support Udinese say he is class.

  • 88 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:53 PM

Yes he is but with Arsenal, Barcelona and Forentina all seriously interested we dont have much of a chance.

Just seen we are after some argentinin goalie who plays for Estudiantes, 24 year old Andujar, never heard of him or seen him before though.

  • 89 SwedeEric // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:54 PM

I remember last year when Sams all signings started falling in and it was talk here about all the good signings, good valu for money and so on, and even talks about beeing sad this didn´t happen sooner…

Now you can read “the impressive capture of Jonas” and then people start getting hyped about us signing Inler (who might be a great player)…

Just think it sounds like last year a bit about the signings, and of all the 8 (?) signings we did last year you can only say that Faye and Beye was the only ones who were realy good… And they came on the last day…

Also thinks it´s looking good with Jonas, and maybe inler and so on, but it sounded exactly the same last year about our signings, and don´t think people here are praising Rozehnal and geremi today…

  • 90 tam toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Swede Eric that is spot on, we build them up and we bring them down that IS the toon fan. We are nearly all guilty of that, some just want anybody. They follow lads or the press- they don’t know who some players are most of the time -sheep. But there are some lads out there that know the crack and a fair few on here are pretty good.

Remember things are different this summer. New owner, a proper world scouting system, a manager we all trust who knows the club inside-out and for the first time in ages a long-term plan. Generally things have been quiet in the press, showing we’re going about things quietly (discounting Modric). I’m much more positive on the future this summer, although come to think of it I did say exactly the same last summer and look how things turned out.
As tam toon said, it comes with the territory if you’re a toon fan.

I tell you why Ed continues,

Firstly its his passion and we can all understand that.

Secondly for every moron on here there are 10 people who genuienly appreciate him

  • 97 valle // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:17 PM

In my opinion that it is 10 times better to have faith in the players we sign and then get disapointed if they dont perform, than it is to be disapointed in the players we sign before they have even kicked a ball for us.

  • 98 The Entertainers // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:18 PM

  • 100 Black and White Blood // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:25 PM

@waddle’smullet – SORRY the money footballers receive for kicking a ball around makes me sick £130,000 a week – No passion to play just for the hell of it! I would bet almost all of you, including myself would pay to pull on a B&B shirt…. Something is not right – I would happily work a 9-5 day job through the week, train twice a week and play on a Sat for the club I love! i’ve spent £thousands on season tickets, first under the little Argentinian Ossie Ardiles. I would much prefer to watch the passion of the likes of Whor Jack….. I’m only 31 but some of the so called stars are piss takers!

  • 103 The Entertainers // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:33 PM

The wage debate is a funny one.

For you and me, the man on the street we cant comprehend that amount of money per week.

But football whether you agree or not is a form of entertainment and they are probably the poorer cousins when you look at the likes of pop stars and movie stars. Lets face it the top footballers, tennis stars and golf stars are all as famous as Cruise , Depp and Pitt.

Of course football is a ’short’ career and lets face it if you were a footballer would you turn down 100k p/w?…..i know i wouldnt.

What really got up my nose was when Fat Freddy and Hall Jr were taking huge pay checks for running the club into the eventual ground.

    That was almost criminal

  • 104 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:37 PM

One name that seems to have dropped of the screen is Riquelme, I’d love to see us try to get him and Palacio as a package. After all WH managed to get Tevez and Mascherano from the same club.

  • 105 Tom_Toon // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM

Tevez and Mascherano came from Corinthians.

Heard Palacio is going to Lazio and Riquelme doesnt want to go a country that doesn speak spanish or italian.

  • 106 The Entertainers // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM

Like the subtle name change Bill!

  • 107 Mad_Magpie // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:44 PM

Yes wages are high, but so much money is circling around the game nowadays that players are generally getting a fair proportion of clubs’ income.

As for Riquelme he is already 30 and he hasn’t got time on his side which you need in order to adjust to the fast pace in England. An immense talent but he’s past his best and we’ve moved on from these glamour signings.

  • 108 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:49 PM

The Entertainers, Cheers, I will make one more change after we have signed another 3 or 4 quality players (not including young prospects) and then I will revert to plain old Bill F.

Tom Toon, I stand corrected, I could have sworn it was Boca as they are both Argies.

never heard of the vadim fella till today when u mentioned him but i know elyounnousi who was getting great reviews so i tried to watch a bit of him. There was a lad called Friedheim Holm who was meant to be a great young talent but he seems to be off the radar for now.

Elyounnousi looks as if he could be a sound investment though, definitely if Martins leaves, he could be a cheap like for like replacement.

    I hear you BAWB

My family have been regulars at SJP since the 50’s and my grandad had his picture taken with Wor Jackie and the FA Cup in a pub in Ashington in the summer of 1955, Can you imagine any of the players these days doing that ?

My family have all invested a huge ammount of time and money on the club for over 50 years as have many thousands of people like yourself.

Even Sir Bobby went down in my opinion when i read that he had initially turned down the Newcastle managers job when he was only offered £500k a season, This was a 66 yr old man who was a multi millionaire and had achieved everything in the game other than representing his beloved club and he rejected the opportunity over money.

I just cannot stand seeing my hard earned going on paying for Smiths, Geremis or Duffs mansions, Ferraris and Slags.

Damn Sky and the premier league the have killed Football.

CRAIGG – They offered SBR £400,000 a year and he only rejected it because he thought it was paltry, and rightly so, compared to Shearer who was on £3 million year. He then accepted an improved offer of £500,000. What players and managers are earning is fair in the wider context of how rich the English game is. I agree with everything else you say however

With that said, my msn name is prasing KK and Guiterrez, and me and a man utd friends was talking about the bright future for the toon… I´m as you, always but big hopes for all the players we buy…

But lods of people here has complained about tight ashley and Wise and everything there, and they buy a player almost noone have heard about before, and he cost us something like 1-2M, and now everything is top prima in the club and the recruitment team is awsome… The ship shifts fast…

1930z totally agree with that but MA and board are treating it like a business now! and they want players with quality that they can sell on if wanted!! we still need a blend of youth and Quality experience!!

He looks to be a good size, we need to add some height to the midfield.

Does anyone know if he is quick?

    Technically any good?

  • 170 VA_Magpie // Jul 4, 2008 at 5:59 AM

I don’t know much about this player but from what i’ve read and heard he sounds like he could be a good buy…but i would love to see Newcastle start pushing for Pavlyuchenko or Zhirkov since we couldn’t get Arshavin why not try to get the other two Russian stars

  • 171 ELFER // Jul 4, 2008 at 7:18 AM

ED: First of all he plays in SERIE A, Italy and not in spain ;-)

But as already said yesterday some swiss newspapers interviewed gökhan and he told them already that he said “no” to newcastle….but let me read the newspapers here in switzerland again today :-)

aussie dave: he is very skillfull!! No wonder he has earned “best foreign transfer of the season” in the italian league and of course is also in the team of the season! So I think the transfer money for him is really worht it’s price…but let’s see…

I don’t want to burst the bubble surrounding the possible signing of gokhan inler, but i yesterday read in a swiss newspaper that inler won’t be signing for the toon any time soon.
    Here’s the article …

«Gögi will seine tolle Saison in der Serie A bestätigen», erzählt Lamberti. «Der Teamgeist bei Udine ist einfach super», schwärmt der Vielumworbene selber.”

    here is the Translation:

Gökhan Inler said he’ll probybly still be at udinesse next season. He wants to concentrate on his holidays, while Inlers Agent Dino Lamberti said there have been more than 20 enquiries and offers for Gögi. Apparently top clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Sevilla, Fenerbahçe and the Ukranian club Shaktar Donezk.

The most serious and intense offer for the Swiss international though came from Newcastle United. „But i’ve defnitely turned down the english offer“ his Agent Lamberti clarified.

Lamberti underlines the importance of Gokhan Inler to the Italian side and how much their coach Pasquale Marino rates him. So the Udinesse fans can breath a sigh of relief, as it seems that he’ll stay for another year, as those responsible at Udinesse Calcio are going to offer him a new contract to match the current market value. „Gögi wants to certify his fantastic season in the Serie A“ Lamberti added. „The Teamgeist here in Udine is simply brilliant „ the much sought after player himself said.

I think we still have a chance of signing him, as it all sounds a bit like agents talk to me, waiting until a firm offer from a “top club” (whatever that is) comes in … Up the offer and the financial terms for him!
He really would be superb signing for us, as he’s pretty fantastic. He’s rated rated very highly in Switzerland and Italy and would fit the bill nicely at Newcastle, maybe a possible replacement for Nicky Butt. He could surely learn a lot from him anyway. Good passer, quick on the ball, very solid DM, quite a fierce shot as he showed during Euro2008 and only 24.

Many regards from Switzerland and “Howay the Toon” !!!

The biggest and strongest rumours are still relating to a sale, from Dubai to Americans again this week, cant believe that he is trying to get £400m+ for the club though, they think it will sell for just over £300m I wonder if that is why Keegan says he will talk in about a months time, or it could simply be all of his signings will be in by then.

If it doesnt sell we can be sure that a statement will be made in a month or twos time saying it was never for sale, predictable! Is that why Owen isnt signed? He has heard a whisper and wants to see who owns the club?

Concerning Tom_Toon and dacvid toon’s discussion about Norwegian players, namely Fredrik Stoor, it is rumoured in The Times that “Fulham are interested in signing Rosenborg right-back Fredrik Stoor”.

Would you two be disappointed if Fulham signed him ahead of us?

  • 175 Aussie Dave // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Ed. you do a great job mate.

who cares we all make spelling mistakes. The aimar thing was nothing a laugh at most.

After all that banter…… I have forgotten the Kn*bheads name who was calling ED…….

Upside down Jim, or Convict Bob or was it melbourne mackem……. might have been “upside doon clown who claims to follow the toon’ anyhoo

A true Geordie knew exactly what ED meant,

or didn’t have a clue but moved on swiftly to Tom Toons view !

IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY……….. SAY NOTHING AT ALL.

go smack yourself in the head with a 20lb f*cking wallaby.
P.S inler might be good for us. Plus one AM, CB and world superstar to frighten the rest of the league !!!
