Newcastle Dismiss Takeover Talk As Absolute Rubbish

July 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 120 Comments

We reported on the potential sale of Newcastle United to a NY based consortium earlier today, and even gave the story some credence.

mikeashley-2.jpg

Mike Ashley - committed to Newcastle long term

But it will be a long time before we do that again, and we usually dismiss the takeover stories out of sight, but this one this morning seemed to have some credence to it.

Wrong, as the Newcastle United club have quite rightly come out and dismissed the news as “absolute nonsense”.

The report today suggested American private equity fund InterMedia Partners had been told the Newcastle club was available for £420M.

But this was all made up nonsense. We wonder who makes these stories up, and whether they just wake up one morning and think something up like this an report it, it just seems so shabby.

A Newcastle club spokesman said this afternoon:

“It is absolute nonsense.”

Well there’s not much wiggle room with that statement, is there?

We’ll have to get wise to these reports in the future, because the club have refuted reports like these multiple times in the last year, and they still keep coming.

Mike Ashley made long-time associate Derek Llambias the new Managing Director at St James’ Park last month following Chris Mort’s departure as chairman.

The two of them are now hard at work overseeing the club’s summer recruitment drive with Executive Director of Football, Dennis Wise, Vice-President of Player Recruitment, Tony Jimenez and of course Kevin Keegan, the most important of all.

Kevin was pleased with the new signing of Jonas Guiterrez earlier this week, and just today, more good news that young center-back Steven Taylor has finally signed a 3 year lucrative deal at Newcastle.

Next task on the contracts side of things will be getting Michael Owen tied down to a new deal at the club, and we’re sure that will happen fairly soon.

Ashley has been the subject of some bad publicity recently, because of his efforts to trim the wage bill, and we feel that’s been a little unjust.

But as long as that doesn’t stop Newcastle from keeping good players like Steven and Michael, and means getting rid of fringe players who were probably not worth their high wages, like Ameobi, Carr and Rozehnal, that’s OK with us.

We’ve had a couple pieces of good news in the last 3 days, with Taylor and Gutierrez, and we’re still hoping we’ll have another new face at the club before training starts up again next Monday. That would be good.
Comments very welcome.

    wall virginity ;)

i love the quote-4 words!! ha. :) Someone who is very reliable told me a couple of months ago that ashley would sell before the year was out. i trust this guy but i don’t see it happening and i told him that. if ashley is gonna sell he’ll wait a couple of years in the hope that we get european football as then our value would go up. why sell now??

cant see him selling just yet only been there 1 year maybe when we become a top 4 club lol he might consider to get a profit from it as he is a business man. so what he needs to do is splash the cash get us ther quiker

    jesus!!

i’ve been reading the other articles from the past few days and cant understand the absolute dissrespect from some of you

im in the alaskan tundra right now ( and i say that literally) and have been and will be for a bit and the highlight of my week is to be able to get online here and check up on newcastle (in case anyone has been wondering why i’ve been gone :)

i dont know you ed, but if you ever took this site down, i’d drive myself mad. im 21 years old and there’s only two things i care about, only two things i have, and one of em is newcastle. not too mention it’s a pain in the a** to read the comments and see nothing but inane feedback.

keep up the good work. i really appreciate it

    until next week, so long.

  • 6 Marc Hottiger // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:17

Everyone else published the same story today from the daily rags to the more respectable sources such as the Guardian, Sky Sports News and BBC News. Last time I looked on teletext on both BBC and ITV they still had it up and Sky Sports reporter David Craig is still suggesting there might be something in it.

Seemed a bit weird for something that originated in the Sun.

Just because of what happened with the Aimar thing doesn’t mean you have to keep apologising if one of your articles isn’t quite the truth. It’s not like you are making statements like ‘Newcastle have signed Pablo Aimar’ and ‘Newcastle have been taken over’. You always say if something is a rumour and if it is the truth and I have complete respect for you for doing so.

  • 7 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:19

IMO I think he is going to sell, he has had to come out and dismiss this claim due to being in the middle of the transfer market, as if he hadn’t this would put doubts in our targets minds!! even if the yanks did buy NUFC it would take a few month to do the deal!! just hope if he sells he sells to the ARABS! DIC!!!!

  • 8 Steve // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:19

Ed - I wouldn’t worry to much, you’re only reporting what else is being reported and the Ashley willing to sell story has more credence than most - I’d imagine if someone actually did come in and offer 420 million he’d take it

    Keep up the good work

  • 9 kizza // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:20

MA is running the club rele well. the youth policy looks great and i feel like we are going to be like a bit of an arsenal (with english players) in the future.

Steven Taylor could be the next john terry for england if he focuses now that he has signed his contract and sort out newcastles defence using leadership skills that we see more of the older he gets.

However back to MA, if i were MA (who, lets face it is a business man), i would consider 420 million, which loads more than what he paid for the club. but the storys not true so it doesnt matter. Keegan likes MA too which can only mean good things for the the coming seasons

    NUFC 4 LIFE

  • 11 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:26

  • 12 euanpolo // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:34

I cannot see Ashley leaving when nufc have just started to get active in the transfer market. Lets hope we get back to transfer news tomorrow!

  • 13 Ex-Pat Mag // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:36

Actually I am quite encouraged by this statement. The equity fund InterMedia Partners had obviously been sniffing around expecting to get the club for around 200 million so at their first meeting with MA he told them that everything has a price and if you want it then give me twice what it is worth cos I want to keep it.

  • 14 kizza // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:38

good point, but we all have our doubts about MA selling the club, but when you see him at games wearing the newcastle shirt, all those thoughts of him selling just vanish, and you really get the feeling he is, dare i say it, one of us

  • 15 Steve // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:40

There are no signings on a weekend so we’ll just have to make do with speculation - hopefully we’ll announce a signing on Monday

  • 16 fazza1970 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:41

The fact you take the club’s word for it is sad in the extreme.
This report was checked out with the American company in question by the Press Association. Not some dodgy tabloid - the Press Association.
They got confirmation of it. So why blindly accept Newcastle’s side of the story?
Of COURSE the club will say it’s rubbish. But that doeasn’t make it ther truth.

  • 17 rutehh8 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:41

well chelsea got arshavin … game over newcastle :(

  • 18 micknufc // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:42

soon as i seen the headline on the front page of the awful paper,i dismissed it.when will people realise and stop buying the thing.
considering other fans keep on telling us we are not a big club, well this is the very reason that as other fans back up against us.front page headlines twice in a week for god sake man! granted it will only be in this regions editions.
we need to take the scousers approach and treat the paper with the contempt it deserves.

  • 19 Frankieboy // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:46

If MA has any intention of selling up it will only happen in a few years when we are again involved in the Champions League where we belong and the club is worth a lot more than it is today.
MA would probably look at and consider any serious offer then. He knows how to run a successful business.
My contradictory opinion on this is by then MA will be even more in love with the club, fans, area and people than he is now and may even see out his days up here.
    It has happened before.

  • 20 HeronMag // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:49

    micknufc - TOTALLY AGREE MATE.

Newcastle United fans have to tolerate ridiculous stories and complete misrepresentation from that ‘news’paper.

Guys - It seems after a sleepy month, Newcastle have woken up

    New Signings
    New Contracts
    and
New false takeover stories, how many is that now? About 6 in the past year?

  • 22 The Entertainers // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:57

I have never once started rumours or conspiracy theories on here and try to stick to my views……

    That is until now…..ha ha!

But i do have it from a professional colleague that at some point last season Dubai International did in fact either make a bid or come very close to doing so. The reason they know this? My colleague has seen documents from Dubai to Newcastle United. I am unwilling to go further into detail for obvious reasons.

But if this is indeed true, then i’m not sure what to make of it. Either Ashley is seeking potential buyers or he is enjoying running the club and has turned down bids.

I personally believe Ashley is do a great job so far and will stay in control. However if a 400 million bid come in, he would be foolish not to think about it.

kizza - doesn’t that say it all it does really look an ATTRACTIVE propersition for a potential buyer!!! especially if we sign some quality this summer!!!

    …………………………

So the way to convince you he’s not interested in selling would be to run the club poorly?

  • 24 HeronMag // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:58

OFF TOPIC - I just need to get this off my chest. On the matter of other fans telling us we aren’t a ‘big’ club.
For one - we don’t go on about it, other fans go on about how we aren’t a big club (Inferiority complex?)
How come whenever we change manager or buy a player it is NATIONAL news, not confined to the sports sections on most broadcasts? I assume it’s because people are interested in this club (just as they would be in the ‘big clubs?’).
We have a big footballing culture in the north east and that’s why we feel the club is important. Not because we think we’re as ‘big’ or ’small’ as other clubs.

    Rant over.

    @Ian

The silence! Do me a favour and regularly check the reuters news on Newcasstle Utd. At 7am this was the SUN spouting Drivel. By midday every rag had it as a story, but if anybody actually bothered to READ the articles and get past the headline, they would have seen that everyone else ’s articles were “The SUN is today reporting” and within an hour, the reputable papers were reporting that Newcastle had denied the whole thing! Oh and BTW we have now secured Taylor. Now do you support your club or do you need it to support you!

I know that I post sparingly here, Ed, but believe me this is my number one trusted source for all things Newcastle United. You pull together stories from a wide range of internet and news sources and you also do some spade work in gathering background info and details.

I dont understand why the comments were so harsh lately as the comments are usually balanced and fair on this page. WUM’s have ruined every football forum that I have ever used and I would hate for this place to go that way.

I love your blog mate and your efforts are appreciated by me fully every day.

There’s some very good comments on here today, with rational views and opinions which make a much better read.

The only thing that stops me from dismissing the whole takeover rumour is the figure of £420m. Where the hell did it come from and get covered so widely? OK, there’s 2 things… who issued the ‘nonsense’ statement? Why couldn’t a name be attributed to it as it is so catagorical?

  • 43 Ben_BKK // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:30

Didier Digard has just signed for Boro…it’s been going on a while but they’ve finally made it official.

  • 44 moomfan // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:31

as if they are god, the media fabricates stories to encourage their own financial gain…and get away with it. what factual proof do they have for creating an article about NUFC is being sold ? MA should sue their pants off and have them prosecuted for slander and libel. fkers are again doing their very best to disrupt this club, before the season gets going. i’ll bet that one of the top four clubs that knows what keegan is capable of doing with newcastle, is paying these journalist to put out this sort of nonsense. why ? because they think he is going to crap out again. i assure you laddies, this time around that keggy is wiser and has better backing to accomplish. watch NUFC 2008-2009. gauranteed.

  • 49 Ian // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:02

AndyT, I wont swallow any old rubbish given from club owners like some.

The ticket sales arent going great, the one signing hasnt boosted them and this american deal may cool sales even more so they have decided this time they HAVE to say something, all of a sudden the Taylor deal is hurried through and announced, I think he is learning fast that he cant just keep quiet and everyone will just pay their money and sit quiet, all of the newcastle sites have started to wonder of he was selling and it has to have affected ticket sales.

Let us hope that the Martins and Nzogbia situation is cleared up next week, Owen shortly after and a couple more players come in and the poorer ones leave. I bet they keep talking from now on.

There was a lot of empty seats with allerdyce and there could be again if they dont get it right even with KK. KK cant make up for everything if Ashley gets it wrong.

This story has been running since he took over the club. It may be true. I hope it is true. He will not spend from his own pocket.I hope he sells to the Yanks/Russians/Arabs and somebody gives the King some real money to spend. Take your £150M profit Mike and your NUFC shirt and clear off. We are trading around in the basement of football and the club is losing credibility.

  • 52 Marc Hottiger // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:35

I am also loving the new header. Good work Uros!

As for the earlier poster who mentioned batman and robin, they were the nicknames of Mateja Kezman and Arjen Robben at PSV (not sure if it caught on over here at Chelsea). We should keep the superhero theme going and snap them up!

Any other footballers you know of who are nicknamed after superheroes? As it is night time now we are unlikely to get any new stories til the morning so this could be good for a laugh.

  • 53 AndyT // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:44

    Ian

Anyone that doesn’t buy a ticket over this is not a Newcastle United supporter, out of defference to Ed I wont post what I think they are.

Earlier today you were complaining about them dragging their heels over the Taylor deal, now it was rushed through to cover this up.

You posted that they were silent over this, inspite of the papers and TV having dismissive stories up shortly after mid day, which is about the same delay between the SUN printing the non-story and the papers re-reporting the SUNs nonsense.

As I have said from the very moment I read the article by the SUN, the article itself said that the deal was killed by the price that was put on it. Thats not from Ashly, not from the club, but straight from the asses mouth, in the article in the first place.

Look Newcastle United is currently being run well as a business. Results on the pitch improving would be great, more signings would be great. But there are going to be many more approaches from other interested parties to buy Newcastle. It might not be a PLC anymore but Newcastle United LTD is still a company. The directors of the club still have a duty to listen to the proposals of potential buyers. There will be more enquiries and offers over the coming years and if every one gets this reaction from the fans then I need to invest in Phsychiatry in Newcastle because there will be several hundred thousand nervous breakdowns.

Thats the problem with todays media. I wouldn’t expect most people to know that successful private companies are contantly pestered by other companies and banks to buy them or float them on the stock market. Or that the Directors have a responsability to the company to evaluate the appropriateness of any offers. But the media dont present this information. Wether that is because they have their own agenda, are not qualified to report acurately or sensibly, do not do sufficient research or choose not to as it would (correctly) diminish the impact of their story varies from story to story and journalist to journalist. What I would say though is that one of the driving forces behind it is the demand by the public to have instant answers and “information”. This makes it more important for the media outlets to have a story up on the internest first, rather than having the most accurate story. The Telegraph on this one is a classic example. They re-published the story from the sun (litterally in the SUN today it was reported that: then the sun article with the grammer shifted around a bit) and less than two hours later posted the story that Newcastle United had totally dismissed the story.

Here we go again. When will people realize about the Sun, I do not even believe the date in that rag, it even lies when it calls itself a ‘NEWSPAPER’. But it nis not only the sun and Andy T is correct in what he writes, perhaps Andy you should take over the Sun Sports column we might get some sense then.

The papers just fill column inches regardless of facts take the story of our main target being:-

“Premier League club Newcastle United have shown interest in Rosenborg’s playmaker Per Ciljan Skjelbred”, the article goes on to say that after his troubled start Keegand has identified the skillful playmaker as his main target. It is only if you read the article all the way to the bottom (most people don’t) do you see:-

“So far what I can say is that there has been no contact with Newcastle has yet”.

Not the ‘has’ which of course should be ‘as’.

    Roll on the season

It will not happen unless the season ticket sales are well down. They are down at the moment because the average fan can smell a rat. He can go back to White Heartl ane for me along with that Greek guy.

Does anyone know if Mr Gutierrez is getting a press conference?

  • 76 daiv // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:01

    Geordie Genius
I have got my season ticket and I live in London. Iam 52 and have been supporter all my life. Born in Gateshead so I have aright to be critical when justified. This guy is a wrongun believe me. The lack of season tickets uptake may panic him to splash some cash but he is still a speculator. KK has been sidelined. It is obvious. Would there have been such a poor uptake 10 years ago when KK was the manager then? No. A stampede to get them. Why is it slow now? Because MA is a ………. and we all know it. We are just trying to be positive and putting on a brave face. This guy is bad news and the sooner he goes the better. He is starting to humiliate my great club. We have to speak out because KK will not unless he wants the sack and he cannot afford to do so.

    Mozza
Strong words but I believe it is the truth.
The club has to deny any such dealings until it has a buyer. Do you expect the club to say at this stage that it wants to sell and is hawking the club arouns to anyone who will pay MAs £420? That is not the way any business is done. He will sell Maybe this month maybe next year. I do not know. What I do know is that he has his own bank balance at heart and not this great clubs. get back to Paxton Lane.

Hi, I am a geordie and a big Newcastle United supporter playing professionally in Scotland at the moment. I like the website, and I regularly come on here. If you think that Newcastle United are having problems this summer, there are clubs in worse positions, especially regarding the ownership situation. I would like to wish the club all the best for the new season though and will be keeping track of the results.

  • 82 Marc Hottiger // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:14

I will continue to have blind faith in the club I support and the motives our owner has for owning NUFC.

But then love is blind isn’t it :)

  • 83 stumpofthetoon // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:16

wot is happening with him that ilva that kid from ital just got in nawt on tho

  • 84 daiv // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:18

    Marc
    That is really blind.
When has any owner of NUFC ever had the clubs interests at heart and not their own bank balance. name one. And do you believe a Spurs supporter will be the exception?

Got a feeling daiv is right, the club will do well only if it is in Ashley’s financial interests for it to do well.

If it is in his interests just to do ok then that is what he will aim for.

I know some people just get 100% behind the club no matter what, which is admirable, but you are all punters and you contribute, the club is nothing without you and you deserve to be spoken to regularly, not given a list of players that they are targeting but spoken to, not just kept in the dark.

That is just my opinion. I think we are all just fed lines and it has to do with keeping ticket sales moving.

  • 89 SwedeEric // Jul 5, 2008 at 2:02

I can guess they ceep writing this shite in the papers because it seems like everyone belive them and get angry at Ashley, and probly buy the papers everytime…

I said earlier I thought we had learned not to udnerstand the papers on everything… But some people never seems to learn.. sadly…

I totally agree with daiv had the same feeling from the time KK came back! felt he was just a porn in the bigger picture!! a way to get himself (MA) on side, cloud our judgement! to maintain his plan to make as much money as possible with spending as little as possible!! I must admit he was sway’n my judgement but I must agree with daiv and ian he bought the club because he saw potential to make a large profit in a short time!!
Look at NUFC, it hasn’t been this attractive to a potential buyer for years if ever!! Huge fan base, fantastic ground and training facilities, no-debit,a youth policy and if he does spend a few quid on players?? very attractive to a buyer!!
He will IMO sell before the next transfer window in jan 2009 !! I hope im wrong and I to will apologise for my opinion!!
HE ONLY CARES ABOUT NUMBER ONE!! THATS FOR SURE! AND IF HE CAN MAKE A HUGE PROFIT IN 18 MONTH HE WILL!
and nothing we say will make a difference!!

  • 92 ObaFan2 // Jul 5, 2008 at 2:44

Some more great reporting in tomorrows/todays papers like from the Sun:

“MIKE ASHLEY has been told to get out of Toon by fuming fans seething over his plans to sell up.”

As this site seems to have a good cross section of Toon fans posting I cannot for the life of me see that many “fans” saying this!

I for one DO NOT AGREE with the rubbish the SUN “news” paper prints.

The Guardian however seem to miss the point by saying:

“Ashley warned he would struggle to sell Newcastle”

    Well aint that just tough.

It’s thanks to the likes of Ed that we now do not have to take this rubbish printed in newspapers as gospel.

NUFC at this moment in time have my full support and I’m sure many others feel/think the same.

  • 93 Sav // Jul 5, 2008 at 3:36

Just familiar Toon-haters, The Sun and Louise Taylor in the Guardian having a stab at us again.
If Ashley DID quote £420million, doesn’t that say something about his so-called burning desire to flog off the club?
Ashley knows the price of a loaf, so it’s surely tantamount to telling would-be buyers to shut the door on their way out. But they don’t get it, do they?

As for avid Sun-reader and nufcblog contributor, HatePrawnSandwiches, saying KK is, ‘just a porn in the bigger picture!’ - Just what sort of pictures are you watching on that widescreen telly?

  • 94 ObaFan2 // Jul 5, 2008 at 3:40

OMG some quotes from Oba about Arse nal:

“Arsenal is a big club that everyone wants to play for,” he said. “I am thrilled and it will be nice to play for such a team.

“But, now that I am a Newcastle player, there is nothing much to say. If it is true, both clubs would have to reach an agreement.

“Is Arsenal a good club? Yes. Would I love to play there? Probably, if Newcastle are ready to listen to them. But if Newcastle says no then it’ll be no.

“Because I still have a contract, I expect the club to speak to me when I get back. I am not saying I want to go but, if anything happens, that’s football.”

Plz plz dont sell Oba, I’d be gutted as he’s one of the players I love to watch in black n white and one of the most entertaining players around. He still has so much potential imo, even Arsey Whiner agrees!

  • 95 51times // Jul 5, 2008 at 3:51

dont sell Obafemi Martins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “Kevin we are not a selling club”

  • 100 The Entertainers // Jul 5, 2008 at 6:15

Can we not judge Ashley on his actions and results, rather than trash made up the the press.

Its clear that Newcastle are saying nothing to noone of late and this is clearly frustrating the likes of the Sun, as in the past we have helped them sell thousands of papers by washing our dirty linen in public.

No stories coming out, so they make up crap.

There is plenty of the offseason left, like i have said on a few occassions reserve your comments until the first game of the season and judge Ashley on his actions alone, not these bloody rumours.

  • 101 The Entertainers // Jul 5, 2008 at 6:16

As for Oba, read his comments. Theres nothing there!!!

  • 102 Ben_BKK // Jul 5, 2008 at 9:02

  • 104 Mac // Jul 5, 2008 at 10:20

I can see this being a very quiet weekend. I don’t think we will sign Inler,I’d love to but i can’t see it. I think as the story has been leaked for a reason perhaps another smoke screen. I hope not but that is my opinion.

  • 105 Sav // Jul 5, 2008 at 10:44

Inler and Derdyok would be a sweet deal. Apparently they are good mates.

Problem with Oba is the 13mil release clause. We haven’t done anything about this, presumably because it would entail a further increase in his 8ok/week wage. Reaping the results of one of FatFred’s last bad Toon deals.
BTW, god forbid, we’ve just done the fat barrowboy a favour by further weakening Real Mallorca with the Gutierrez heist. Will this make them a soft target for his stubby ginger fingers?
Well the good news is, he’ll be miles away. I hope Toon fans at the tournament have ‘FatFred Out’ banners and a collection of chants to let Mallorca fans know Shepherd is the biggest balearics alive.
