Good News As Taylor Signs New Contract

July 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 105 Comments

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle is reporting this afternoon, that Newcastle United promising 22 year-old central defender, Steven Taylor, today signed a new three-year deal.

steven-taylor-6522.jpg

Steven Taylor - pleased to sign a 3 year deal at the club

Taylor signed the contract, reported by the Chronicle to be worth around £35K a week (about £1.8M/year),  and that finally ends speculation that he may be leaving the only club he has ever wanted to play for.

Steven is said to have signed the contract earlier this afternoon, and to have been over the moon with the contract.

It probably took longer than it should have taken, but hey, let’s give the club some credit where it’s due, and they now seem to be moving full steam ahead on both contracts and new signings.

If only we had signed Pablo yesterday - well maybe some time soon.  :D

We have little doubt that we’ll hear soon that captain Michael Owen will be  signing a new contract at Newcastle too.

We have some good players at the club, and we don’t want to lose them, and Taylor and Owen are two we certainly don’t want to lose.

We’d also like to keep young 22 year-old Frenchman Charles N’Zogba, and the longer he stays with us this summer before the end of August, the more likely it will be he will stay.

We really hope so because Kevin is the type of manager who can make him into a great player for Newcastle United.

News of this contract will no doubt please Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan and the ever faithful Newcastle supporters.

Taylor has become a major player for the club since emerging from the youth sides, and he is currently captain of the England Under-21 side.

He can only get better, if he keeps his head down and works hard, and he has shown a definite maturity last year, under difficult events on the playing side of the club.

Steven also looks like a future captain of the club in the mold of a certain Bobby Moncur.

We’re very pleased this contract has been signed, and it looks an excellent deal from Steven’s viewpoint.

We can hardly call Newcastle stingy now, when they give a 22 year-old almost £2M a year, can we?    :D

Comments very welcome.

    Yh!

  • 3 Chris // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:38

Good news. Both party’s should be happy with the deal. £35,000 a week. Breaking News on SSN saying Cristiano Ronaldo is signing for Real Madrid for around £67M.

  • 4 neeraj // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:41

    good news
now get him couple of good defending partners…..
and let he would prove he is good

  • 5 dfs // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:42

knew this was gonna happen i could just feel it. any way i have it on good authority that we will announce the signing of someone under the age of 25 next week

  • 6 Andy // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:43

    a better signing that jonas!

A bit off topic, but, according to setanta we’re interested in the impressive mehmet aurelio of fenerbahce and turkey-very good signing if it comes off. Also, the tough tackling right back Coelho of brazil and athletico paranese claims he turned us down to join bolgna. To see just how much of a tough tackler he is, go on youtube, put in coelho tackle then watch the third one down with a player in black and white(not the toon) and somebody in blue with the title KERLON FOQUINHA VS ATHLETICO.

    Enjoy :)

  • 7 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:44

glad where not facing him first game of the season chris, they’ll strugle to replace him you cant just pluck another 40 goal a season player out of thin air

  • 8 Nick C // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:44

Ah Good, three more years of posturing and being a geordie.
Let’s hope he learns how to defend and pass the ball more than two yards when bringing it out of defence.

  • 9 Nick C // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:45

Oh yeah, 3 more years of the Evening Comical calling him “Tayls” Aaaaaaaargh!!!

  • 10 ANON // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:50

I have also heard that the Inler deal is done. He will sign a three year contract early next week. He is on Holiday until the weekend, and he will return Monday and sign!!!

I am not 100% sure of this it is just something I heard from a source who is correct I would say approx 80% of the time!!

He said this would be followed by 2 more, striker & CB, and maybe 1 more midfielder if one of our midfielders leaves (Zoggy, Barton or Milner)

  • 11 Leo // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:51

newcasltle really are giving us something to be happy about, its great that tayls (had to do it nicky c) is signed up

it must be the sun that is getting to newcastle because it has made them do some good things

  • 12 Matthew Tom // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:52

Great news - I agree with Andy, I’m happier to hear this than the news about Gutierrez.

Only 3 years though … I guess this means he’ll want even more money in only 2 years’ time instead of maybe 4 years.

Not bothered - delighted he’s signed.

  • 13 Stamford Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:53

Am pleased Taylor has signed but don’t believe that he is worth that money. He still has a lot to learn…………too much for a beginner, but then the football wage structure has gone mad.

  • 14 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:53

    Average player.

  • 15 breitling replica // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:00

This is amazing news…. but average player

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:00

    Agree with Stamford and Matthew.

  • 17 Chennai Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:00

@ dfs do u know who we will sign?

  • 18 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:01

The kid is 22, and has alot to learn. Can any of you boys can name me an accomplished 22 year old CB? Didn’t think so. Sergio Ramos cost Real Madrid £24m when he was 20 and he’s not even accomplished. Carlos Puyol didn’t get into the Barca team until he was 26. Get a grip lads and support young Taylor. If he keeps up the work, he’ll get there. And that what we all want, one of our own as a main stay in the team!

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:02

Just look to Wheater, hes accomplished a very very good defender.

  • 20 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:02

Hope we sign some experienced quality so Owen stays and signs up!!

  • 21 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:03

Talkign from Vast experience Tom? You can’t even buy a pint legally yet. Come back boys when you grow up and have actually tasted life to an extent!

    Bloody fools!

  • 22 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:04

Wheater just had his breakthrough season. Bramble played a belter in Ipswich’s first season!

    Whats your point?

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:06

cuople of months and i can :)

doesnt make my opinion any less valid than yours.

  • 24 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:08

You don’t have enough justification to say that Wheater is more accomplished than Taylor, do you? You’d be basing it on one season. Would you bet your house on it? Oh, I forgot, you don’t own a house, you’re still on your mothers tit!

  • 25 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:09

Good luck with your exam results. Lets hope you learn something at university!

  • 26 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:10

Taylor is still learning, when we had a player like woodgate along side him we all saw the difference!! that’s all he needs a top quality experienced defender alongside him to help and teach him!! give the lad a chance!!

  • 27 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:13

Wheater has been a mainstay for 2 seasons ill have you know.

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:15

Kash is getting a bit tetchy :) what a mug, bit agressive over the internet arent you.

  • 29 dougnufc // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:17

Great! Get more signings in please!

  • 30 Mad_Magpie // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:29

Good news, he still has plenty to improve upon but he has the time and potential to do so. I was gutted when Woodgate rejected us, he would of been perfect for Taylor to play alongside and learn from. Taylor is a player we can build the team around.

  • 31 Frankieboy // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:34

If we get at least one quality central defender which it seema will be the case then Taylor must be prepared to battle for a place as he will not always be first choice. He is still learning the game and must accept this fact and knuckle down and learn from whoever is his direct competition. There could be major competition for him with whoever comes in this Summer whether it be one or even two, Faye, Cacapa ( yes cacapa) , Possibly Beye, and even Kadar and Tozer if they develop as quick as some might predict.
Its a good deal for all so the hard work may just be starting for Taylor.

  • 32 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:35

Build a team around taylor, haha, whatever next, build a team around Duff?!?!?!

  • 33 Frankieboy // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:39

    Nick C
    Calling him
    “Tayls” boils my pee too.
Should sign a kid called Heads and sure there is someone of that name in lower leagues.
Then KK has a atraight choice Heads or Tayls.

  • 34 Mad_Magpie // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:42

Tom_Toon why not? He’s a local lad and a player who could play for years at the club. Sure he’s not the best of premiership defenders at the moment but at least he knows what it means to where the shirt unlike foreign-nobodies who have come and gone.

  • 35 ToonPhill // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:44

    wheater is ugly as sin

  • 36 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:47

‘Sure he’s not the best of premiership defenders’

and he probably wont be, you said it yourself why we shouldnt build a team aroun him.

Hes not evne in the top half of prem defenders.

  • 37 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:47

So even though he’s not that good we should build a team around him because he’s the local lad?

  • 38 Davies // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:50

Agreed, Wheater is ugly. Who’s chin has he got?

  • 39 Mad_Magpie // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:56

You seem to have ignored that I said at the moment he isn’t. Ramage was simply not good enough but a local lad and Taylor has more to offer. If in two years’ time he hasn’t improved I will hold my hands up and say I was wrong. An English spine to the team is important , but not integral, and a player like Taylor can hopefully be a part of that.

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:58

Taylor, on current ability shouldnt even be in our starting 11.

Couldnt care less if our spine was Uzbek, English, Spanish or whatever, as long as its good.

  • 41 ToonPhill // Jul 4, 2008 at 16:59

i think he has jimmy hills chin

  • 42 Joe // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:15

He’s a decent player and I’m glad he’s re-signed. Even if he doesn’t start every game at least we’re building a squad full of options. Bring in another couple of defenders and midfielders, and maybe a target man and we’ll have a decent squad for the next season

I certainly wouldn’t say any smoggie player is better than any of our lads. Not only does it not sound right, it doesn’t taste good either!!

  • 43 toonjon // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:27

how can taylor learn when he has never had a proper defender to learn from. If we were to get a proper cb then taylor can and will only get better.

  • 44 gordond // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:27

  • 46 Gateshead Mag. // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:49

    About time like

  • 47 Ben_BKK // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:52

Good news, though I’m also of the opinion that Taylor isn’t a world-beater as some seem to think. I agree that he would appear to have a bright future ahead of him, and I sincerely hope he manages to fulfill that.

@ Tom_Toon, how old are you exactly? Cause I’m just 17, about to start last year of school. You struck me as a bit older, but then most people do over the internet, I get the impression, reading everyone’s posts, that they’re all around 24ish…unless they write something really childish, or type in ALL CAPITALS or something stupid.

  • 48 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:56

Ben, same as you, about to start my last year of school. Then to Uni i hope.

  • 49 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:57

Ed noticed your new graphics and pics on the site!!

  • 50 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 17:59

Tom toon cant even argue back, forget about it….Also, Wheater is a good prospect doesnt mean Taylor is not….but think Taylor is average based on one poor season is just silly…

Tom Toon thinks he is so good that better than most of the managers who rate him and work with him week in week out

anyway, hope we can sign a real top CB for Taylor to learn from….

  • 51 Ben_BKK // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:04

Yeah I’m hoping to go to uni as well. Newcastle one of my potential choices as well, though I think Durham would be my first choice if I can do well enough. Hopefully would mean I actually get to watch the Toon, it’s a bit hard at the moment, living in Thailand and all :P

  • 52 oga // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:06

Very overrated player! Bring in two more centre backs.

  • 53 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:11

Anthony - They arent going to say hes shite now are they. Its up to the fans to decide on a player because a manager wont come out and give thier opinion, i dont see KK coming out in the next few days say alan Smith is shite even though we all know it.

What have i got to argue about, nothing.

Ben - I was thinking about Newcastle so i could get a season ticket, dunno how good it is for product design and other design courses though.

  • 54 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:18

feckin hell tom toon i had you down as aboot 40 you’ve got some football knowledge for a whipper snapper

  • 55 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:27

He is average, so he is selected to England U21 Captain and Pearce loves him and rates him highly, so does SBR and so on

he is average, because most of the top 10 clubs want him, and King Kev selected him to play regularly…

King Kev selected Smith to play regularly?..

yes, football is about opinion…but most of the managers think he is a good prospect, then should he describe as an average player?

  • 56 Ben_BKK // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:30

I wouldn’t quite say he’s average…he’s not the finished article for sure, but he’s not top class just yet.

Tom - I’m looking at doing Law at uni, that’s why Durham is my main choice over Newcastle, though it means I have to take bloody LNAT tests this summer.

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:35

Who else is going to play ahead of Taylor?!?!

Faye is the only central defender worthy of our starting 11.

  • 58 AndyT // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:42

Glad he’s signed. I wonder if three years has anything to do with that being the protected period for pulling a webster?

  • 59 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:52

    1) again, why do a lot of managers rate him?

    2) why does Keegan continue to state he has faith in Taylor and Faye’s partnership?…he can choose not to say anything at all

    3) Diatta is an Senegal international with 40 caps…is he shite?…we also had Cacapa and Edgar, if King Kev thought he needed a change, he would….Big Sam also did choose to drop Taylor for Cacapa when he felt he needed a change

  • 60 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:55

Anthony - Shola Ameobi is 26 and has played under various managers over the past 8 years, does this mean we’re wrong to not rate him too?

As for Taylor, he hasn’t just had a poor season, he was poor the year before too but opinions of him got over inflated after he took a penalty with an injury last summer, be looked a bright prospect when he came on the scene but he’s hardly progressed since then.

It’s a big season for him, he’s 23 in January so he can’t keep hiding behind the potential tag anymore.

  • 61 51times // Jul 4, 2008 at 18:57

When paired with an experienced commanding CB I’m sure we’ll see improvement from Taylor. That’s why if we’re going to pay a lot of money for a player it should be for a really good defender.

  • 62 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:11

    1) Which manager came out and stated he rates Ameobi highly? (except Roeder who rates him of course, 2 matches a goal ratio, not bad)

    2) he was poor the season before?…you must be joking…he was our best defender in a very poor season by a miles…and by the way, he got most praises from the managers the season before, during and at the end of the season

    3) why did our overall defensive performances improved at the ending spell of last season? does it has a lot to do with confidence?

    4) so how many managers consistently mentioned that CB is a man’s position?…how old is Taylor now? 23 next season, cant hide behind the potential tag anymore?

  • 63 Spyro // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:20

Taylor does not deserve those wages, 20k should be what he is on

  • 64 Spyro // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:22

    lovin the new banner Ed

  • 65 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:23

I’m a bit late into the Taylor discussion but I don’t think anyone else has mentioned it and thats the fact that a lot of the top clubs have expressed an interest in him if we decided to sell. So whether we rate him or not and it seems to be fairly even on that score, it would seem that top managers do rate him highly.
Some players develope late some early and some just don’t progress, I don’t think we can really judge him yet. It may well turn out that someone like Kadar or some new signing puts him on the bench in any event he will be a good back up or a saleable assett. Personnally I think he will become a good un in the Terry/Adams mould.

  • 66 bob // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:25

  • 67 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:26

And in agreement with 51times I would go further and say don’t worry if a good new CB is a little long in the tooth. Experience is a good thing in a defender.

  • 68 Kaler // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:26

  • 70 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:32

    Bill: wise words

  • 71 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:36

1, All previous managers rated Ameobi, Bobby Robson loved the bloke.

2, Yes he was poor the season before, how could anyone forget his shocking displays against the likes of AZ Alkmaar or the 5-1 hammering by Birmingham where DJ Campbell ran rings around him.

Being the best defender out of a pool that contained Carr, Bramble, Ramage, Babayaro, Huntington and Edgar doesn’t really mean much.

3, Our defensive performances improved because we had a run of games against poor opposition, when we played against better opposition in our last 2 games we conceded 5 goals.

4, For me a defender of 23 needs to start performing at a consistent level which is what Taylor hasn’t done for any decent period of time, Agger, Skrtel, Richards and Wheater have all been consistent performers so why shouldn’t we expect the same from Taylor?

How many clubs looking to make a serious push up the league would consider playing someone every week who has little consistency to his game?

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who rates Taylor to tell me what is so good about him as a defender? What qualities does he possess that makes you think he’ll ever be good enough?

  • 72 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:40

He’s weak as piss though Bill, he’ll never become a player like Terry or Adams.

Look at the goal Ashton scored past us at Upton Park, his goal came from a flick on by Bobby Zamora who outmuscled Taylor to win the header.

    Bobby Zamora ffs!

You won’t see a player like Terry getting outmuscled by a player like that or ever have in his career.

  • 73 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:46

He is strong, quick and fearless. Ok he might not be technically very good or the best reader of a game but if a player is willing to try and improve, then these are things that can be sorted. These are the things I would expect Chris Hughton to be working on, don’t forget the way our defence improved after he came along. I expect he will be working hard on Taylor and our other defenders. Hopefully this will not be our Achilles heel any more.

  • 74 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:51

As for Shola he will still be with us next season, will be our top goalscorer and will break the club record. The Partnership of Smith and Shola will make other defences tremble as they smash in the most goals ever scored in a season by any club ever.

  • 75 Marguerite // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:03

I know he has plenty of knockers on this site, and to them I would ask give the lad a break. I am absolutely delighted that he has signed an extension with the club.

I can see so much potential in him, and yes I see his faults too. I think a lot can be put down to rashness of youth. Most defenders need time to come into the position. I have always said he still has a lot to learn.

It would help if he had an experienced central defender with him on a regular basis, rather than the continuous swapping and changing as last season and let’s face it Bramble and Boumsong were not ideal candidates to bring the lad on.
There are an awful lot of experienced people (ex defenders too) who speak highly of him.

  • 76 AndyT // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:05

    Bill,

Can I have some of what you’re drinking tonight :)

  • 77 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:06

He isn’t strong or quick, he looks like someone you would think is strong because of his thick set appearance but he’s got no balance which means he gets brushed off the ball easily, he isn’t what I’d call quick either and struggles to keep up with quicker strikers.

Add to that his poor positioning, he can’t read the game at all and it’s anyone’s guess where the ball will go when his head makes contact with it and you’ve got the recipe for a very average defender that wouldn’t get into the starting 11 of Spurs, Man City, Blackburn, Portsmouth, Everton or Villa let alone the big four.

Yet people think he’s good enough to start for us if we want to overtake these teams?!

Sorry lads but take your Geordie shades off, he’s average.

  • 78 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:08

    1) are you sure?…King Kev, Big Sam, GS, they all rated him?…of course SBR rated him, fair enough for SBR, it is just Ameobi stopped developing

    2) 2 matches, then he had a poor season? I can easily counted for more than 2 matches he has played very well

it might not mean much, but we conceded more last season than the season before…even we have better and more experienced defenders

    3) so they kept a clean sheet because we played against weaker teams?…is there a easy derby match or against some team fighting for their survive?, Portsmouth?

against some better teams, did the whole team played well?

Agger had made plenty of mistakes, but he has potential…at least Taylor didnt out muscled and out paced by Drogba as badly as him

why pick on Taylor while our squad has been consistently poor in two seasons in a row?…does it has a lot to do with confidence level?, managers ability? tactic?

no disrespect Matthew, but I think you have to ask youself why a lot of top managers rate him highly but you dont?

but before that, we have to answer why we finished our lowest record points in two seasons in a row

  • 79 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:10

Yep, Taylors major fault is he cant read a game, he isnt a clever defender, that cant be taught thats why i cant see him being that great.

  • 80 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:13

no strong?…how was his performances against Henry and Drogba?

how many blocked shot he had if he cant read the game and if he had poor positioning?

  • 81 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:16

reading the game doesnt have much to do with blocked shots, you throw yourself infront of it as a REACTION to it, you dont forsee it.

  • 82 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:17

    AndyT, Hic, no!!! ;)

  • 83 Matthew // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:25

Blocking shots are usually a result of not being able to read the game, you’ve got yourself in a position where you’ve got no option but to jump in front of the ball, something you don’t see the likes of Woodgate or Ferdinand doing very often.

Also Anthony - Can you post up these quotes from those top managers who rate Taylor?

  • 84 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:25

how about his last tackle to prevent a goal ?

  • 85 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:25

taylor would be ok with someone good alongside him it makes a hell of a difference, a mean woodgate made bramble look good ffs,, that said who would you rather see together collocini, cuellar or cuellar taylor for example, all hypethetical i suppose because we havent got a scooby who we’re going to sign after spidey’s arrival

  • 86 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:27

Im 99% sure tht if we buy a good CB this summer it will be:

    Faye-New CB

Taylor will be on the bench.

Matthew, that bull, Ferdinand blocked numerous of shots

sori, but I think it is a easy job to find the quotes…just find it in the net, you can find a few

  • 88 Anthony // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:33

Tom Toon: The best thing about Taylor is he has spirit and he is a local boy…he will fight for everything when he wears our shirt…

we need competition, no doubt, it will only help Taylor…hope we can get a real top one

  • 89 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:34

by the way i bet anals made a mess in his pants now his lovechilds signed a deal, i can see the headlines”fans ecstatic as taylor signs deal” no pal this is the problem you dont print what we really feel the jury is still out on him and you drilling the shite you write aboot him down our throats does him no favours what so ever print the truth “fans mildly happy at taylors new deal if he stops dropping clangers in important games”

  • 90 Waddle's mullet // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:35

Shola to norwich in the next 24 hours!

  • 91 Bmore // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:40

Taylor has good potential, and once he learns to play the ball rather than the man first - he will become a great Newcastle player.

Very happy he has signed - if he hadn’t then we would need to spend around £8m to get a player of his ability.

  • 92 Ben_BKK // Jul 4, 2008 at 20:41

There were a couple of moments last season where Taylor really pissed me off.

The first was against Man United, Ronaldo was put through and Taylor came across as if to block him off and get the ball, but he somehow managed to get between Ronaldo and the ball, then keep going, and Ronaldo just went straight through, and duly scored.

The second was against Everton on the last day of the season, when a cross went in, he went up to header it, but it just sort of skimmed his head and fell to an Everton player, who again duly slotted it in the back of the net.

i dont think faye is any good atall. taylor needs to improve massively and isnt going to get the teaching he needs next to faye, woodgate would have been good to us becuase i think next to a quality defender taylor would then shine. just hope KK doesnt get to carried away ont he attacking front and forget about are defence.

  • 94 Spyro // Jul 4, 2008 at 22:47

taylor is not strong or quick, especially not quick, he is terribly slow. I hope he improves and starts to deserve the praise he recieves on here

  • 95 Gareth // Jul 4, 2008 at 22:48

Tom Toon, you’re spot on - Taylor is utter shite because he’s english and not an obscure foreign player that nobody has heard of.

  • 96 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 23:41

i wouldn’t say he’s utter shite Gareth but this season is make or break for the kid i’d have been happier if we had oba and owens contracts sorted out that would give a huge indication of where we are heading, they wont sign if we are on a road to nowhere

  • 97 scott9 // Jul 4, 2008 at 23:54

our biggest signing of the summer will hopefully be owen

  • 98 mozza // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:00

scott9 that would show anyone interested in joining we mean business, i wish they all had the attitude of habib beye, we wouldn’t have a problem then 110% effort exactly what spideys gona give according to everyone i know that watches spanish footy

  • 99 Mitch H // Jul 5, 2008 at 1:12

Taylors a cracking young CB, he’ll play for England one day & he’ll captain The Toon as well. Hopefully to our first trophy in way too long.

To sell him would be pure madness.

I for one realy like taylor… Can se were you guys come from when you say he isn´t a worl beater.. But, insteed ofbuying a new one, he is deffenetly a ok secund or third choice…

Thinks he is doing very well to be only 22… Can´t se him being the new Terry, Puyol or Ferdinand ofcourse, he has the fysikt, but not the brain… But think he´s coming a long way with his fysiks and the little football brain he has…

And why do people clank down on Tom_toon? For me his is by far the person on here who knows the most and stand by his belive…

Taylor for thou is one of the that realy is worth his sallary! Owen, duff, barton, geremi, cacapa, smith and the likes are on much higher wages, and to be fair they don´t play that much better ever game… Barton and geremi were on 60k, the others are on higher, Taylor has been on 10k…

  • 101 BillHartas // Jul 5, 2008 at 3:52

To be honest, i dont think Taylor is anything amazing (or wont become anything amazing at this club), but im just happy that we’ve got him tied down, because it would be a travesty if we let him leave for nowt.
BTW, that Coelho tackle is superb.

  • 102 Piers // Jul 5, 2008 at 4:00

Wow people. Stop your hating. Everyone can make their opinions….And Tom Toon’s right, Taylor needs to grow up real quickly. And if he doesnt next year, then he will find himself on the bench….Average at the moment….nothing more. To be completely honest, its hard to see him becoming an elite defender. He has the talent, but not a natural football mind. Makes the worst decisions of our back line. (Probably gonna get shit for that) But it’s true. He needs to focus a lot more and quite frankly needs better strategic coaching.

Oh yeah…. I also wanted to thank Ed for such a marvelous job he has been doing for his website.

I went camping for ten days and i arrived home yesterday. The first thing i did when i got home was that i checked this website. I was pleasantly surprised to read about our first signing of the summer. I will definately be looking forward to seeing Spiderman in action next season. However i was also surprised to see how many nay sayers were expressing their opinions about how inaccurate the rumours on the site were. If you don’t like it y go online. This information is first class. Everything Ed writes that is a rumor….he explains very clearly in the article. I don’t see the problem. It’s nice to hear the Summer Transfer Rumours . So anyway, with that being said i just wanted to say thank you for a job well done. Keep it up!

  • 103 hanzowen // Jul 5, 2008 at 9:06

yeah that’s a good news that Steven Taylor has signed his contract but as many’d agree he is still not yet a finished article but yeah agree we can rely on him. Faye is better & more consistent defender we’ve got atm. though he did made some mistakes which duly punished him & cost us some points. If Taylor can soon read the game better like Cacapa (i do rate him as he’s more natural defender but yeah he’s a bit lack in physical & prone to injury) does i reckon Taylor can develop fast to be the anchor of our back 4 for years to come. Sincerely hope we need at least 1 more top-drawer defender this summer to strengthen our defense. Oh & IF Martins goes we do need another top CF.
*ps : a good banner Ed. Well done! :)

  • 104 Hadji // Jul 5, 2008 at 11:06

Taylor is good but not good enough for starting 11,maybe in 2 years when he matures completely will be good enough for the first 11

  • 105 ANON // Jul 5, 2008 at 11:08

TBH, Taylor is the best of a bad bunch behind Faye. he is better than….
    Cacapa
    Edgar (for now)
    emmmmmmm
    emmmmmmmmmm
    Cant think of anyone else.
Iam sure if we get behind the lad he will be a very very good Defender, 100% convinced.
Bare in Mind his Manager at U21 level who was no slouch, rates him as one of the best young CB in the country and spoke to Fabio Capello about him with the view of a call up to England traing sessions.
35k a week is excessive, so is 30k…20k….10k….the majority of people on here will not earn it in 2 years but hey….its what clubs are willing to pay.
If it is offered, he will take it!! Iwould…………
