Jonas Gutierrez is Kevin Keegan’s first signing since he returned to the club in January, and it looks a great one.

Kevin Keegan - told to stay quiet right now?
We were all hoping that once Kevin returned from holiday a week last Monday, we would be hearing from him almost daily about things going on at the club.
Of course we knew he couldn’t talk specifically of our transfer targets since that could alert other clubs and interfere with the transfers in a negative way.
But we’ve been surprised that Kevin had had absolutely nothing to sat at all. We assume he’s under orders to keep quiet right now, which is fine if we can keep making deals like the Gurierrez one.
But Kevin even refused to discuss Gutierrez’s arrival yesterday when a Flybe plane was named after Kevin, in his honor. He did talk to the journalists present after the event, but whatever he told them was off the record, and they cannot report it.
But Kevin said he will not be making any public comments regarding football-related matters for at least another two weeks, which takes us through to around July 18th.
Exactly why Keegan is not talking is still a bit of a mystery, but Kevin certainly expects to see players of similar standing to Jonas, arriving at the club before the start of the Premier League season on August 16th.
As we had reported yesterday, the Journal today is pointing to Gutierrez’s international team-mate Pablo Aimar, as being a potential next Newcastle signing.
That’s even though he is now 28 years old, and may be a bit too old, since it’s younger players Mike Ashley wants to bring to the club this summer.
We had reported yesterday that we thought Pablo may have already signed for the club, but that was incorrect, and turned out to be a major mistake by us.
However, the comments yesterday were inundated with insults, ridicule and disdain for this site and the author, and we use our words advisedly.
We’ll be less likely to jump the gun in the future, that’s for sure, but comments of the nature we saw yesterday will jeopardize the existence of this site, our readers need to understand that.
The Newcastle United Blog was created to allow civil discussion of the news surrounding Newcastle United, and if we cannot get that, what’s the point?
Comments are always welcome, but please refrain from attacking other readers and the author - he’s doing the best he can - which seemingly will come as a shock to a lot of our readers.Â

“But we’ve been surprised that Kevin had had absolutely nothing to sat at all.”
Typo, I think you ment to say “say at all”.

Ed, can you give the Gutierrez sigining a rest for now, how many articles have you released about it now? 10, 20?
3 Steve // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:35
Maybe Ashleys told him that he’s selling up to highest bidder!
Ed - I wouldn’t let the small minded people from yesterday bother you to much, you do a great job at keeping this site going and its much appreciated from the majority -
yesterdays post was wrong but don’t be so touchy about a few stupid comments

Hopefully Ashley has put a gagging order on KK because he’s always been terrible with the media. He’s far too open and lets them led him into talking about things he shouldn’t.
As for the New York talk - Ashley doesn’t want to sell but if someone makes him an insane offer (over £400 million) then he will sell, like any of us would with that kind of profit after one year.
No matter what Ashley decides to do, he saved us from bankruptcy and I will always be grateful for that.

Ed you will always get some knuckle draggers on here who don’t think before they open their mouths with some bile. I was particularly saddened to see one person advocate giving Dabo another kicking and putting his other eye out. Sadly that’s life these days with some disaffected yobs. However, the vast majority of us, less cerebrally challenged, appreciate you time and effort and would be very sad to see it stop.

I think after the Modric saga the recruitment team have taken this new strategy with player recruitment.
The less people who know you are after a player the cheaper you can get him?
Frustrating for us, but its always nice to wake up and see a player has signed, rather than Fat Fred saying we will get anyone we want, then wait all summer and get Lee Bowyer….
7 Yahya Ahmad // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:37
Its a good thing with the silence the no other clubs will know about th players we are talking to and we can just sign them like that! Otherwise other clubs will try to steal the players from us like Luka Modric!

Ed, you keep the news and views coming mate, I for one am always on here checking out whats going on.
Do not let a few of the mindless upset you, the vast majority of fans that come on here are exactly that, fan of NUFC and also fans of this blog.
Keep up the good work and many thanks for all your efforts; past and future.

Ed, I don’t post here very much but I read the site several times daily. It’s a great place for me to keep up with all the news and speculation, and like most of the readers, I really appreciate it.
I read the comments yesterday, and I hope you realise that it was the minority speaking in that manner.
I, for one, would like to thank you for all your excellent work and the effort you put into this place.
I think everyone should remember that we pay NOTHING for this site. I would miss it if was taken down.
Cheers ED

As I said in a previous post, I think Ashley is just playing a game, something just doesnt feel right, as others have said he is a very succesful businessman, he is already in retail so he knows PR and advertising are of top importance.
Yet this club is not operating a clever advertising/PR programme even though season tickets are on sale and media coverage is paramount for income and sponsorship, look how other clubs are talking up their clubs, stirring excitement and quick to dispel vicious rumours which could affect their income, still our club is silent, fair enough for a month while they put a few final touches to their plans and get holidays out of the way etc, but still silent?
I think the last signing was to keep the fans quiet and keep the season tickets selling.
I think he expects the deal to be done within four weeks, if not I hope their plan B is good enough to give us a decent season.
16 Steve // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:49
The more I think about the Gutierrez signing the more I worry - did we buy him specifically because he was cheap I’m pretty sure we hadn’t been tracking him beforehand - I’m starting to agree with others that Ashley is keeping his cash in the bank while touting the club to anyone who’ll come up with a 200 million pound profit for him
I really hope I’m wrong
17 Marc Hottiger // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:50
In the past Newcastle United have encountered too many problems with leaks to the press.
I think the last real example of that I can think of is the Luka Modric deal. Kevin Keegan expressed his interest in signing the player then Tottenham jumped in front of us in the queue to sign him. And you know how everyone feels about queue jumpers
So since then we have kept very quiet which has been translated by fans as meaning we are not doing anything. In actual fact we have been very busy and we are beginning to reap the rewards. After all where were Tottenham when we signed Gutierrez?
Also some other promising news I can break to you comes regarding Steven Taylor’s new contract. Don’t type it as gospel but this article could have more clout than others, after all who writes about someone signing a new contract to sell papers?

KK has been rather subdued since that meeting, I would just love to know what was said. There is so much room for speculation, but I have a feeling that he has been told to concentrate mainly on training and player management and that the R-Squad will deal with transfers although he is allowed to state preferences. Oh and yes say nowt without express permission.
19 Hammy // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:56
News out from Barcelona, because Ronaldinhio has put on 2 stone during the close season he has invoked the “Munchies “clause in his contract and is now eligable to move to a foreign club for a fee of £1 million. Could be worth a gamble at that….
20 Davies // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:56
Still love it Ed. Nice to see that the opening comment came from somebody who wanted to point out a typo. Knob.
That Keegan is still keeping mum can only be a good thing. As has been said, what the press don’t know, they can’t print. It makes life easier when you are trying to sign a player, if the Mail (et al) aren’t inviting bids from other teams.
I hate most of the press.

So lighten up, okay!
As far as Ashley selling, dont think he wants to, however its a business like any other and he is known to be an astute business man.
The days of Stan Seymour and local ownership are history, who knows the next owner could be from Korea or China, look at Man. City.

Keegan said today: “Jonas is a wonderful signing for us.
“I know a lot of other clubs were interested in him, but he’s a terrific addition to our squad.
“He’s an exciting player and I am sure our fans will enjoy watching him next season.”
Looks like he’s making comments to me, this is from the official website.
39 Nenad The Serbian Mag // Jul 4, 2008 at 12:43
I like the fact that Keegan is saying nowt. The actions count, and words are forgotten as soon as those $%”$&&%# at BBC or Sky get something new to “report” on.
The silence is golden! The players we get this summer might be golden too! Why not be positive?
OFF-TOPIC: Look people, Ed is doing a huge job, and he is doing it out of his LOVE for Newcastle. So if you don’t like the number of articles, it might be a good idea not to read every single one, eh?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Do people really think that other clubs only know about players after we’ve announced that we are interested in them? Don’t be so daft.
As for Keegans wall of of silence, well, it’s probably for the best. Keegan isn’t the best with the media and I reckon all of the clubs comments will be via the official web site first and the papers second, which is how it should be.
44 Pete M // Jul 4, 2008 at 13:25
I’m just gonna add an M on the end so that no one thinks i’m the same Pete as the one who posted above. I think Keegan staying quiet is a good thing i’d be more concerned if he was appearing day in day out rambling about nothing. Things will come together - keep the faith!!!

Ed may I request that should you ever get so sick of the rubbish and unconstructive comments that occasionally get posted that you don’t ever stop writing, but rather just remove the ‘Comments’ function altogether. Drastic and unfavourable option, but the point is that i’d much rather read what you write than have the idiotic responses which sometimes follow plus you lose your rag with it and chuck the site in.
BASICALLY, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

Just want to echo the ‘Ed love-fest’ comments. Good work, man and fk the begrudgers!
As for KK, he’s not bad with the media, he’s a breath of fresh air as he speaks frankly and treats fans as intelligent human beings. Probably why so many players seem to like working for him.
But the Ashley way is you don’t know a deal is on until its sown up. That’s great for us. Plus for this transfer fortnight, we get to watch the press stumbling around like headless chickens waiting for news of the next Toon transfer strike.
Luv it, just luv it!
