Newcastle Interested in 21 Year-Old Norwegian

July 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 108 Comments

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle has revealed that Newcastle United have been considering a move for 21 year-old Norwegian international Per Ciljan Skjelbred.

per-ciljan-skjelbred-2.jpg

Per Ciljan Skjelbred - 21 year old lifelong Newcastle supporter

The Chronicle is quoting sources close to the midfielder’s club Rosenborg, and here is another player we’ve heard no mention of so far this summer, so it looks like the Newcastle scouting team have cast their net far and wide looking for good players at good prices this summer.

The highly-rated 21-year-old Scandinavian’s adviser Andreas Ekker apparently has already confirmed to the Chronicle that Skjelbred is keen on a move to one of Europe’s top leagues.

And the good news for Newcastle fans is that, like many Scandinavians, the youngster is a Newcastle fan. :D

Yet with Norway’s Tippeligaen league already in progress throughout the summer, Newcastle’s scouting network has been able to watch the player since mid-May.

A source close to the Norwegian club told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I have been informed that Newcastle appeared very interested and that they have been watching him since mid-May.”

“Tottenham, Rennes, Portsmouth and Fulham have also been scouting him, although there has been no approach yet.”

“This has also been reported several times in the Norwegian media.”

“Ciljan Skjelbred is quoted as saying he has been a fan of Newcastle United since he was a child.”

His Norwegian Rosenborg club will be looking for around £4M for the youngster, before they would consider selling Skjelbred, one of Scandinavia’s most promising young players.

If he is any good at all, that would seem a reasonable price, and at 21 years old he certainly fits the player profile Newcastle United are searching for this summer.

Another photo of Per Ciljan Skjelbred

Skjelbred has already turned down a potential contract with Liverpool earlier in his career, after saying he wanted to prove himself at first-team level first at Rosenborg.

The 21 year old has also recovered from a serious injury, in which both his fibula and tibia in his lower leg were broken by Olympiakos star Ieroklis Stoltidis, in a Champions League game.

But the youngster has played well since then and his adviser Ekker said today from Norway:

“All the clubs from the big leagues have been watching him.”

“So far what I can say is that nobody from Newcastle has come to me.”

“There has been no contact in that way yet.”

“He is very ambitious, and if Newcastle came to us with an offer then we would have to seriously consider it.”

“We would look at the total package they would offer us including how the coach would us him.”

“We know there are several clubs interested that have watched him at both club and international level, but nobody has come in with a concrete bid.”

The youngster has played for Rosenborg 35 times since 2004, scoring 3 goals, and has one full Norwegian International cap so far - but those figures are from March 2007 - we’ll try to get updated stats for him.

In October 2007 he was named as one of the world’s 50 biggest talents by Italian football magazine Guerin Sportivo.

He stands just under 5′10″ tall and is contracted to Rosenburg through the end of next year.

He has also played for the Norwegian under-16, 17, 18, 19, 21 sides during his football development, and only turned 21 on June 16th.

Here’s video of when he received his bad leg injury.

We don’t know too much about this player, but it seems like the lad could be a decent buy, and being both ambitious, just 21 years old, and a Newcastle fan since he was a child, cannot be too bad.

Any player with those credentials has to be worth a second look.   :D

Comments welcome.

seems like a good buy if liverpool were in deed after him and the suggested clubs are interested. If the above is true and he is in deed keen on a move to us then y not!

Skjelbred is very highly rated in Scandnavia - I really hope this is true!

My mate Oyvind (from Norway) thinks he’s class. I’ve never seen him but they reckon he’s going to be a fantastic player.

That’s not Per Ciljan Skjelbred. This picture is not of him. BUT Skjelbred is a great talent! Very popular in Norway. And I would welcome him to Newcastle any day.

  • 13 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 13:58

Aint really seen much of him, i saw him in the CL once and he was just running around non stop for about 90 mins making good passes and setting up attacking, not defence splitting passes, but a good box-to-box, if not more attacking CM.

Hes a CM so id just get him :)

come on newcastle, i want to write my brother who’s in boot camp to tell him about the Spidey signing but I thought I would hold off a few days so that I could add a few names to that letter.

Let’s hurry up and sign, Seb Larsson, that Derdiyok, Inler and this bloke by Monday so I can get me letter off…

  • 26 Ashton // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:08

He was named as one of the world’s 50 biggest talents by Italian football magazine Guerin Sportivo and he rejected a move to arsenal liverpool and TITnham before so he must be good we should sign him and Derdiyok they will both fit in our new policy they are both young hungry promising players and they are toon fans !

  • 27 Toon fan from Norway // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:08

I am Norwegian and know the player well. His is promising, but 4 million is a bit high. Should be less, but with a clause based on apperences, trophies, etc. Something which is usual in Norwegian transfer deals.

  • 28 chris norway // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:10

haha…. thats not per ciljan!!! i am from norway, and have watched him quite a bit. he is a good prospect, who runs his guts out. he is good player, but dont know if he is good enough for toon.
Elyounoussi from Fredrikstad whould be a good buy.

  • 30 mozza // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:12

same list as me beright only with vdv on lol i wish

  • 31 Marc Hottiger // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:12

Fits the right profile we are looking for. The change to signing young players with their best years ahead of them makes a refreshing change to seeing washed out old pros on a steady decline turning out for their last pay packet.

We need hunger and ambition in the squad, players who crave success. When put in front of the camera it’s ok for the likes of Patrick Kluivert, Celestine Babayaro and the like to say they are here to win things but when your cabinet is full to bursting with medals and your retirement is looming large they are really only coming here for one thing.

  • 32 Simen // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:12

Skjelbred is a very good player, and could easily become an even better one. I’m a Norwegian fan, and would love too see him in the black and white shirt:)

  • 37 Jonasthenorwegiannufcfan // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:15

This guy is a top prospect. Kinda skinny little dude, but his passing is excellent. definately norways biggest prospect for the future. he played CL football at the age of 18 and just debuted for the national team and has made some good efforts there lately(even tho we suck) Would be thrilled if this were to happen:) regards from norway

  • 38 Leo // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:15

good good, reading the article i couldnt work out what position he played obviously because he isnt very well known but from what we hear he is a CM, which is good because in both our reserves and our main team we lack strength in that position

My memory may be at fault but I think I mentioned Foggia last year. I believe he is a scrappy wee midfielder bags of skill and a real engine room type of player. I think he is with Udinese but if I am wrong then I’m sure someone will correct me. ;)

  • 44 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:21

Chennai - Havent really seen much of him, but i has seen Foggia, but whilst Foggia is creative he looks too slow for the premier league.

Bill - He was at Cagliari buts he just moved to Lazio.

skjelbred turned down a contract with liverpool when he was 15-16 years old! he won a tv-show, who searched for norwegian talent. and the number one prize was 2 weeks training with liverpool. he impressed them so much that they offered him a contract.

  • 56 ObaFan2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:36

  • 58 Tjodalf // Jul 4, 2008 at 14:39

Well, Davies, we should get him! We should get him before he is ready for the PL, then we should groom him and then we should place him on the bench, and then we should play him each week and then everybody would envy us and regret that they in july 2008 thought: “god damn, why did we say he wasn’t ready yet??”

  • 61 SwedeEric // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:01

Would be nice with a Scandi in the team! Althou I doubt he is good enought to take us places, the only thing that talkes in his favour is his age realy for me…

And we have not been that good with scandi players have we? Tore Andre Flo and Andreas Andersson was both huge misfits!

But bring in Seb Larsson by al means!

  • 62 Kash2 // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:03

Pure speculation as the Chronicle hasn’t got a clue who we’re signing as nobody at the club talks to them anymore becausel Alan Oliver is a TAM TOON (which means nob jockey)

I hope that´s not something that will keep on going ever singel year, like with Ameobi. Think we said that for 5-6 years, this is his make or break season…

And realy, didn´t Taylor do quite well last season for a 22 year old? Think he looked realy good when he started to get game after game! Nice he finaly got his new contract.

What are you talking about? That picture is of Skjelbred! This is Jamtfall: http://www.rosenborg.info/player/mkjamtfall

Anyways, I’m a norwegian living in Trondheim and have seen Rosenborg play several times this season. If I remember correctly I mentioned this young lad a couple of months ago.

In the Tippeliga his team is struggling and have collectively been playing rubbish to date. (Shifting management and internal drama and so on. Sounds familiar?) Skjelbred have mostly been looking really frustrated and have yet to play a really good game this year, although he’s always running and tackling all over the field and certainly never goes down without a fight. He’s a very aggressive, attacking driving force in the midfield. He plays with a heart and passion which makes him a favorite among the RBK-fans, and I believe the crowd at St. James’ would love this hard working youngster too. He is also used to a though, physical game, as norwegian football traditionally always has looked up to the english.

I believe Skjelbred has got extreme potential and a move to the right club and the right manager/coach could very well set him on fire.

    Replacement for Barton?

Put the money on the table, this guy is VERY interesting and we need to snap up players such as him if we are ever going to back to the CL.

Another interesting, young norwegian player that would be worth taking a good look at is Bjørn Helge Riise, John-Arnes younger brother who is playing as an attacking midfielder at Lillestrøm.

  • 71 Kaler // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:33

If he’s going to come quite cheap then why not sign him up, if he doesn’t fulfill his potential then we won’t have lost that much. However by all accounts there is a decent chance he will turn into a solid player sometime soon, probably quicker under KK. If we can, sign him up I say, worth a punt.

  • 72 Kaler // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:35

I’m getting nervous about shola too, I hope he packs his bags sometime soon, if we ge £3mil for him that would great business for us, go nicely towards this kid or Inler/Derdiyok/Larsson

  • 73 Norwegian_toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 15:52

I think this kid is class. I’ve watched him several times, and I think he will do good in any of the major leagues. People say he’s not preformed wery well this year, but in the resent he’s been good in the norwegian league. He is finally true with the major injury he had, so I think he would blossom and reach his full potensial. We should absolutly by him now, before any one als does.

    Another norwegian here!
I can confirm that this is one of norways brightest young talents. Altho, i think he has some way to go to get to premiership lvl, he will be in the same class as Morten Gamst Pedersen.
He broke his leg a while ago, and has been fit and playing for a while now.
Tho i dont think he’s risen to the level he was before he broke it.
Im not sure, but i really cant see him being a regular in one of the top 4, so the money would be a bit of a gamble..

i don know how anyone can knock ed for his efforts, stuff like this proves there are newcastle fans globally, and this is where they come to get news, and talk about the club.
keep up the good work ed

as for this young lad, if he has potential and his talent is clear..the fact that he’s a newcastle fan means he’s worth a go.
alot of people said cash for aimar would be worth the gamble. Well this lad is young, a newcastle fan, and has a pricetag of 4 mil, which isnt exactly OTT. if other clubs were interested including liverpool, i get the impression he’d be a decent signing

  • 87 Maestro // Jul 4, 2008 at 19:19

If I could choose ONE player from the Norwegian Tippeliga, it would be Skjelbred. (Just ahead of Tarik Elyounussi).
He`s like a Duracell- rabbit, runs A LOT.
Hardly ever looses the ball, and he has the right attitude. For those who claim he was an Manure- fan, well he`s not! Newcastle all the way :)

@ Maestro - I meant players in the Norwegian league, cause that’s what people had been talking about earlier…

  • 93 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 21:58

Theres a few good players in the nowegian league i know:

Stoor, Jaiteh, Skjelbred, Sapara, Tettey, Elyounoussi, Husklepp, Haestad, Fredhem Holm off the top of me head :)

I am a norweigan and follow the norweigan league very closely. There is no doubt Skjelbred is the hottest prospect we’ve had in years along with Tarek Elionussi which is a player we absolutely should sign!

He is a good player, hard working, technical and good passing aswell. He plays right or centre / attacking midfield. I think he will envolve a lot during the next year and then move abroad.
He has been unlucky with injuries, and that has stalled his progress til now. He does, however recover quickly and seem to recapture his previous form in very little time.
He was great against Chelsea in what eventually was Mourinho’s last match in charge of the London club.
As a norwegan I say go get him, but he’ll need at least another year or two before he can play regular premier league football. There is no doubt he is quality for any bottom half team in the premier league, and he may very well make it in the more ambithious teams like Newcastle.
A starting prize of about £2mill, increasing to about £4mill on appearances would be fair, concidering his injury stats.

His club, Rosenborg has, like Newcastle been under performing over the last years after 13 concecutive league victories. They have the players needed but underperform greatly. Their new coach, Hamrèn seems to be the man that can sort things out and bring the club back to the top, but that might be a problem as they will most likely try and keep their best players and have some concistency till the season ends in october / november.
I think he will be cheaper to us come January, and he’ll even be a better player in my opinion. I also doubt he will transfer at all in this window.

But serious, go get Tarek Elionussi NOW!! He’ll be ours for £3mill!!

    To Ben_BKK, post 85:
He’s Fulham quality, not more. Would never compete with Beye.

  • 96 Tom_Toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 22:26

The thing is we dont need another small striker.

  • 97 tam toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 22:29

Hi this is the REAL tam toon- some toss pot has put my name down to that total bull in comment 2. Check my grammar I would never put there when it should have been their. So the thick f-ing prick that put that, is the same f-ing prick that has stole hadji’s name and others. I will not apologise as I do not need to. Habib Beye is the best signing for ages and I would never ever start a rumour. If you look back i gave you Zamblera, no one had heard of! I met him in the Nuffield on deadline day. So believe that mackem wanker if you like. Thanks to lads like tom toon and regs who know I would not have made that comment. Beware lads it could be you next!

  • 98 tam toon // Jul 4, 2008 at 22:49

Hey Ed it can’t be hard for you to trace the email address on comment 2 and tell this site who it was, or at least that I did not make the comment. Also for others like the twerp that stole Hadjis name for example! Would’nt happen to be 51 times would it?

    Tom Toon

If you remove the last three I would agree. Huseklepp was good but after recieving a HUUUUGE payrise to stay with Brann he`s been crap. Haestad is mediocre at best and Fredheim Holm have certain skills, but no end product.
But there are more exiting talents over here.
Vegard Forren, Mounir Hamoud, Tore Reginiussen, Vadim Demidov, Alanzinho to name a few.

  • 102 CarToon // Jul 4, 2008 at 23:59

why dont we buy fredheim holm he is class … he plays for valerenga in norway !!!

  • 103 tom tomb // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:07

Tom toon you only knew 6 players from Norway comment 122 Inler story yesterday. Now you know 13 - explain.

  • 104 chuck // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:14

Seems he`s not ready for the PL yet, according to most of our Scandinavian fans, but a prospect.
Think we got enough prospects at the club at present, what we need is a good defensive midfielder like a Veloso or Senna, someone to run the team, a decent BIG striker(not the Swiss kid) /a centre half and acouple of full backs.

  • 105 Tom_Toon // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:20

what are you stalking me or something!

You see i name extra that i havent seen like the last 4 but i have heard about because i want to know from a Norwegian whether they are any good.

And only the last 4 i named on this thread i didnt mention on the Inler thread because dont know them, but the ones further up and on the inler thread i do.

  • 106 tom tomb // Jul 5, 2008 at 0:30

    Ta for answering tt.

  • 107 Martins // Jul 5, 2008 at 8:41

Tom Toon: Gulsvik is a decent prospect, his shooting is incredible. Sokolowski, Ruud and Riise are shite. Rather go for Vadim Demidov. Pure class!

  • 108 Lasse // Jul 5, 2008 at 15:54

Ashton, didn`t you pay attention in the Norwegian classes? ;)
Skjelbred answers a fan asking what his favourite team is and he answers Newcastle.

    Tom Toon

Gulsvik has an incredible shot but not much more….yet anyway.
Sokolowski and Bjørn Helge Riise isnt good enough. Ruud is a good player and is almost equally good with both feet. But not quite good enough for us imo.
Mounir Hamoud plays for my team in Norway (Bodø/ Glimt) and has been converted from right winger to rb. He is pure class and i bet Obafemi couldnt keep up with his pace. Very strong one on one and likes to attack.
