Newcastle Reported Interest In Anton Ferdinand

July 6th, 2008 · 43 Comments

Lots of news this morning that Kevin Keegan may be in for Rio Ferdinand’s brother, Anton, who is still at West Ham United.

anton-ferdinand-1.jpg

Anton Ferdinand - is he good enough for Newcastle?

Glenn Roeder was always keen on Anton Ferdinand, who is now 23 years old and has played 138 times for West Ham with 5 goals and represented the England Under-21 side 17 times, and was often paired at the back with our very own Steven Taylor.

His cousin is Les Ferdinand, who is still revered by Newcastle fans after Les scored 41 goals in 68 appearances for Newcastle from 1995-1997 under Kevin Keegan. What a scoring record!

Anton Ferdinand told Sky Sports.

“I don’t know what is happening. I am happy at West Ham United and until I get told I am not a West Ham player I remain a West Ham player.”

“Hopefully that will get resolved soon. I had a little chat with him (Alan Curbishley) this morning, which went well and now we are looking to see where we can go from here.”

If Kevin is interested he can always talk to Les about the boy, who has had some discipline difficulties in the past, but he does seem to be maturing nicely now.

But we’re not sure about the 6′o” defender, and whether he would be a good buy for Newcastle at £6M.

We don’t think so, although we’d certainly prefer Anton to Spurs’ Richard Dawson, if only because Ferdinand makes fewer mistakes than the Spurs defender.

We’ll  put up a poll on the right to gauge whether our readers think Anton would be a decent buy at £6M, although we should be able to get him for less than that.

Decnet player but i just don’t like the fella. A bit of a bling bling boy like Dyer,Jenas and Bellamy.

  • 2 Martin // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:11

Personally don’t want him, Anton and Steven together wouldnt be good or experienced enough. We need another experienced centre back. Also its Michael Dawson not Richard Dawson.

  • 3 scott9 // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:11

no no no no no hes shit he makes loads of mistakes and is an aragent b*stard that thinks hes alot better than he is this wud not be a good buy whotsoever we hav 2 good young centre backs in edgar and taylor we need a couple of experienced centre backs.

  • 4 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:22

The Sunday Sun is reporting that we look likely to miss out on Inler as he wants to stay at udinese. Shame he was my top target of the summer. Gutted.

  • 5 mozza // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:22

overated bling bling merchant like mac says in the dyer football”celeb” mold no thanks i’d much rather go for cuellar

  • 6 DanToon // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:23

The Sun talks more shit, ignore it Mac!

    Hate Anton he’s a nob lol…

  • 7 Leo // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:24

yes he is a bit of a bling boy but dyer jenas and bellamy were great players at newcastle-

    yes even jenas too

    although i dont want anton

  • 8 The Kaiser // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:25

Dont want that knacker, I thoughtwe were supposedto be getting rid the overpaid shyte at Newcastle not recruiting more for god sake …and £6m is a joke too!

  • 9 AussieToon // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:27

lol richard dawson few mistakes lately

    1.Skysports said newcastle bought aimar
    2. Udinese is in Seria A not la La Liga
    3. Its Michael Dawson

Dw edd ur still doin a great job every1 makes mistakes here and there

  • 10 Ericles // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:28

No cockney cast offs. Anton is in good company with Bellamy, Dyer etc. We need a quality defender alongside Taylor not some type who will do his training in the early hours on the Quayside.

  • 11 Sav // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:28

I agree with Scott9. CB is not our weakest position. We need 2 CMs and a heavy-duty striker to replace
Viduka when he doesn’t fancy it, first. We have young lads coming through and if they had to play a couple of matches to cover short-term injuries and suspensions, that would be ok by me.
Carroll, though. would be better off on loan this season. he needs the stability and the matches.

  • 12 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:30

Sav. Carroll would be better off sold. I don’t rate him,he just isn’t going to make the grade

  • 13 AussieToon // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:33

are we linked with Leroy Lita? and wat use thnk will edd have a blog by tonight

  • 14 Rob Kirton // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:35

This guy is (possibly) the worst centre back to have faced us in the last couple of seasons. Of the last 8 or 9 goals we have put past West Ham he seemed to be culpable in at least 5-6 of them.

Ask Micky Owen who couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when making Ferdinand look a right Charlie.

    NO NO NO NO !

  • 15 catawbamag // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:35

    I’ll pass on Anton.
Richard Dawson!!!! Mr. Harrison must have been watching reruns of Hogans Heroes and Family Feud. OUR SURVEY SAYS…DING DING DING DING DING…GOOD ANSWER! :)

  • 16 simon winham // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:37

goal.com is reporting that we have signed pablo aimar

  • 17 tian // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:39

why not bring in a world class defender to give the team defence a big boost.

  • 18 Spyro // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:40

anton ferdinand and taylor wouldn’t go together…but they wouldnt have to as Faye will be our main CB next season

  • 19 scottish mag // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:47

simon winham, why lie there is nothing about us signing aimar on goal.com, but if u have a link to the article to prove then go ahead

  • 20 WIGAZ // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:58

We dont need this bloke! lives in his brothers shadow & not to mention all he would be doing is out gettin pissed in the gate & quayside trying to shag out that moves all a dyer! We should be trying for a CB of experience! someone like silverstre or Ben haim as they are realistic targets! been scratchin my head tho & cant think of any CBS both with experience & quality who we could get! any ideas lads?

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:13

    I dont know about this.

Anton is far better than Taylor.

Anton sometimes looks a brilliant defender but sometimes shite.

Faye-Ferdinand is far better than Faye-Taylor imo, so i’d buy him.

  • 22 NUFCAl // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:14

This guy will never be as good as his brother and he’s no better than what we’ve got already No point.

  • 23 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:17

Bin Laden’s family in bid to buy NUFC!!!

    http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/sport/football/article-1032450/exclusive-bin-laden-family-bid-newcastle-htlm

  • 24 The Entertainers // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:19

I’m not sure if Anton will be as good as his brother. But i remember Rio making a few mistakes when he was younger too and now look at him.

I would sign him or Evans along with a more established CB. That would provide great competion for that position.

  • 25 Joe Toon // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:28

Anton ferdinand - No Thanks! We’ll be looking at 24-26 age category for the CB position, so we can bring on taylor, (despite his age and games played is stil v inexperienced) kadar, tozer, edgar

  • 26 Tom_Toon // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:29

Squillaci is in talks with Sevilla, surely we could nip in and get him!

  • 27 xfer // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:32

No for me. We need someone better at the back. Both he and Taylor are about the same, i would rather keep Taylor cos he plays with a heart, at least. And I think Taylor will get better.

  • 28 toonarmy08 // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:37

no no no ,another cockney playboy ,no better than what we have now .Id go 4 collocini and mathisen(not sure on spelling). And 6mill for ferdinand is too steap in any case!!!

  • 29 Tom_Toon // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:41

Mathijsen is one of the worst defenders i’ve seen! Let the mackems have him, he is shite.

  • 30 Anthony // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:51

no thx…not good enough for us, wont improve our defense, and not what we need

  • 31 Pricey // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:57

what is wrong with eveyone, anton is brilliant, and at 6m that just means he’s fantastic at what is he, 21 years old, your all insane

  • 32 reillers // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:58

I don’t know, he’s a wee bit..bad, he’s shite to be honest, but Rio was more then a wee bit shite when he was that age. He was pretty shite till a few seasons ago really. So if he’s anything like his brother we should wait a few years and then buy him lol.

  • 33 Spyro // Jul 6, 2008 at 14:08

i know it has nothing to do with us buying anton, but did anyone know that both anton and rio got robbed and slapped up a bit in lewisham south london, i think it was last year or maybe the end of the year before, lol. serves them right, they always try and pretend like they are “ghetto”, especially rio, who apparently was a pussy in school, he went to my older brothers school, Blackheath Blue Coats

just thought i would let the ferdinand haters know lol

  • 34 Obafan // Jul 6, 2008 at 14:17

Mathijsen is overrated; so no thanks!

Anton is not the player I would like (I voted no on the poll); but if I had to choose between him and Dawson I would take him, cause Dawson is equal to silly mistakes. Ferdinand also makes mistakes, but not as much as Dawson.

I hope we get a good CB to play alongside FAye or even Cacapa. I still believe Cacapa, full of confidence, might be our best CB we’ve got.
KK must see something in him, cause otherwise he would have ended his contract.

  • 35 Matthew // Jul 6, 2008 at 14:33

why not bring in a world class defender to give the team defence a big boost.

    …………………………..

Because a World class defender wouldn’t want to come to a mid table team in the North of England.

  • 36 Swepalle // Jul 6, 2008 at 15:06

Why dont let Geremi be CB??

  • 37 Davies // Jul 6, 2008 at 15:25

    not for me thanks

  • 38 mikeygd // Jul 6, 2008 at 15:46

i dont rate him 1 bit, i think hes only in the PL because hes related to rio

  • 39 King Kev // Jul 6, 2008 at 17:21

He and Taylor could be the future in Newcastle.

  • 40 Beardsley's Love Child // Jul 6, 2008 at 18:28

I hope this story about anton ferdinand is paper bullshit. We dont need a player who lives off his brothers name and is prone to the odd ‘TITUS’ moment. We need an experienced, consistant, commanding TOWERHOUSE at the back..build from the back, even if it takes us a season or two to get it right…..finally…no more cockney mercaneries please

  • 41 Pan // Jul 6, 2008 at 18:58

@Obafan. I rate Cacapa highly. Good reader of the game.

  • 42 figsdad // Jul 6, 2008 at 19:06

nope like what someone said before another bling boy…

Plus he doesn’t play for spurs so we got no chance…

  • 43 Andy // Jul 20, 2008 at 14:13

tbh i fink he is the bollocks and he WILL be an england international no doubt about it….. not much difference in class between him and taylor if we r bein honest!

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
