News in the People yesterday that Newcastle United are again interested in Steve Sidwell, the Chelsea central midfield player.

The People are saying that Newcastle United are making a shock move for Steve Sidwell – but we’re not sure it’s that much of a shock, because we’ve been linked with the player several times this summer. Of course we’ve also been linked with another 187 players, so that doesn’t always mean much.  😀
But now is the time that clubs will be trying hard to bring in players, since pre-season training will be starting, or has started for most Premier League teams. The Newcastle lads are back today, so we hope to see some photos of them sometime today on the official site.
One good thing about Sidwell is that he has plenty of Premier league experience with Reading (168 total appearance and 29 goals), but he hardly had a look-in last season at Chelsea, when he appeared just 15 times for the London club, who played over 60 games last season. Kevin is said to be looking for players with proven EPL experience.
It’s true this is a late move, because Aston Villa have already negotiated a price with Chelsea, thought to be around the £5M mark, and it’s now certain that Gareth Barry will be moving from Villa to Liverpool, so presumably Steve would be a straight replacement for Barry.
The good news for Newcastle is that Steve was all set to move to Tyneside on a free transfer last season, but then manager Glenn Roeder was sacked and Steve decided to join Chelsea, which we thought was a bad move at the time, because it would be hard for him to get a game with Chelsea’s world-class central midfield.
But he’d get a game at Newcastle, and he could play under Kevin Keegan, which we hope is a big plus in Steve’s eyes.
We’d love to see Steve join Kevin’s new revolution, because not only is he a good player, who started at the Arsenal Academy, but we think he’d get even better playing under Kevin Keegan.
