The News of the World (NOTW) claimed yesterday that Newcastle United and Kevin Keegan are interested Leroy Lita, the 23 year-old Reading striker.
Leroy Lita – linked yesterday with Newcastle United
We watched Lita a few times last season for Reading, and were not too impressed as he seemed to drift in and out of games, and sometimes didn’t even seem to be on the field.
But Reading also had a relegation season, so it may be unfair to judge the striker on some of those performances. Leroy did play 9 times for the England Under-21 side between 2005-2007, and scored 6 goals.
Since he moved to Reading from Bristol City in 2005, he has played 73 times for the Reading club and scored 19 goals.
Lita was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1984 but has rejected the chance to play for the DR Congo, in favor of pursuing an international career with England. Our own 17 year-old Kazenga LuaLua was born in Kinshasa in 1990, as it turns out.
But the NOTW then say Lita will be a replacement for Oba Martins, if he leaves the club for Arsenal this summer, and that Michael Owen’s future on Tyneside is in doubt.
So there goes their credibility, because we don’t think either player will be leaving the Tyneside club. We’d be very surprised if there’s any truth in this story.
Lita is keen to maintain his status as a player in the Premier league, but we’re not sure the boy is good enough to improve the Newcastle striking options. We’d much prefer to see somebody like 20 year-old 6’3″ Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok.
The NOTW then states that Middlesbrough and Sunderland are also said to be interested in the ex-Bristol City player.
This is not a player we think we should be interested in, because he seems just a little better than average.
