The agent of Zenit St Petersburg star 27 year-old Andrei Arshavin has told the Daily Telegraph, that he expects the Russian to travel to England soon for transfer discussions.
Andrei Arshavin – may well end up in Premier league
Arshavin was impressive at Euro 2008 with Russia, at least in his first two games. In the semi-final game against Spain, he was hardly noticeable, and seemed completely exhausted.
Spanish giants Barcelona have had their second offer of 15M euros (£12M) turned down only yesterday, with his Russian club holding out for more than £20M. Talk about being greedy.
Arshavin’s agent, Dennis Lachter, has said he expects the Russian pay-maker to be heading to the Premier League for negotiations, shortly.
We expect the clubs interested are Arsenal and Chelsea.
Lachter says that Arshavin would only consider a club that can provide Champions League football.
Lachter talked to the Daily Telegraph today:
“Andrei would like to play in the Premier League but he will not accept an offer from clubs like Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa.”
“There are only four British clubs he would play for and they are in the Champions League. It’s not about money, it’s about a team and professional ambition.”
“Zenit is negotiating with several clubs.”
“We are now waiting for a phone call from Zenit president Alexander Dyukov to allow us to negotiate his personal terms with one of them.”
“It’s most likely he will be heading for England.”
Lachter also believes that any interested club will need to double Barcelona’s bid and make a bid of around £24million to complete the transfer. This, mind you, after he was up for sale for £8M just 6 months ago.
Well, they can try we suppose, but there’s no way he’s worth anywhere near that figure, even if he did have two excellent games at Euro 2008.
Lachter added.
“It’s going to be a very big transfer,” “Zenit will definitely not accept an offer of less than 30M euros (£23.8M).”
“They are owned by Gazprom, who are one of the biggest oil companies in the world, so they can afford not to sell him cheaply.”
We think Arshavin is worth around £10M, maybe a little more, but good luck to any club who wants to pay £20M or more for him.
Newcastle certainly have better things to do this summer, with that kind of money.
Comments welcome.

Comment #43It shows a great lack of original thought or tenacity when top players only want to play for the “big 4â€. If I were a star player I’d enjoy the challenge of trying to take a team who are currently away from the top tier to some success. None of them have any imagination or individuality when it comes to anything much off the pitch. Very few aren’t greedy either.
It wouldn’t really bother me if we only signed lesser-knowns or unknowns.
Hopefully Obafan is right and arrogant, braindead statements are coming from the agents and not always from the players themselves.

Just saw the highlights from that game just to be sure, and it was barnetta. But thats not important
Agree with you completely on derdiyok. Hes a much bigger talent than carroll. Hope we get him. I think he can become very good.
And the fact that he wants to play for us just makes it even better : )

Comment #46Tom Toon – stop dashing my hopes man! I’ll be dreaming of a Cole/VDV centre midfield partnership tonight – and Arshavin behind a front 2 of Owen and Ashton. Arda and spiderman on the flanks. ATTACK ATTACK ….etc

Comment #47What arrogance. I hope none of the big 4 take him, nor any of the big clubs in spain. I hope Zenit has to swallow a £10mil return and its own words.
This is why I think the UEFA needs to impose a rule where a club can only compete with the team they qualified with. What has someone like Arshavin done to help _insert_big_club_ qualify for europe? And yet they feel this entitlement to the highest eschelons of football, lofted by a mountain of speculation. The system as it is deprives other premiere league teams of the opportunity to sign upcoming talent, making the field very unequal. The rich get richer while the poor get poorer.
And so as not to penalize clubs who happen to lose key players, there could be a system in place where a club can appeal to replace a lost player with an incoming transfer.

RB: Beye, Geremi
LB: Enrique, Tozer, EVANS (can play anywhere in defence)
CB: Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, Edgar, Kadar, COLLOCINI
R/LW: Milner, Jonas, N’Zogbia, Lua Lua, TURAN
CM: Butt, INLER/VELOSO, AIMAR, VDV
ST: Owen, Martins, Viduka, Carroll, DERDIYOK
OUT: SMITH, DUFF, AMEOBI, EMRE
Similar to Owen_10, Keegan says he wants two players in each position at least, those players in CAPS would be my preference, not that there is any chance in hell of us pulling that off though.

Comment #61hps we have to look at midfield coz its just is not good enough we are in desperate need for invention to play the clever disguised passes, ruuning past the strikers etc basically someone with imagination, guile, craft in the beardsley, gazza mould… i wish we could find a youngin on tyneside with all these qualitys but sadly right now it just does not seem to be happenin….

Comment #71HPS – i think its very difficult for any Toon fan to trust in the current board with all the speculation concerning the intentions of Ashley. But why would Keegan have joined us? and why would Ashley have even brought Keegan to the club if he wasn’t serious about winning something. He could have easily let Allardyce carry on as manager if all he wanted was to make a quick profit on the club. I believe that Ashley has a passion for our great club and wants to bring success to it. I just hope he doesn’t prove me wrong…
normski1930z – i highly doubt we have any chance with capturing either of those players as both are rated so highly with many of the top European clubs. But Keegan is known for the odd surprise signing.

Comment #75This may be some nonsense, but I just saw that Inter Milan just offered 9.75M for Lampard given that the first round offer of 7.95M rejected… Is the transfer market “corrupted” in PL so that we need to spend too much for players? (Not to mention Zenit and Arshavin’s agent living in their own dreams)

Comment #80and as for andrei, he can shove his top four, money spindling trip to england up his arshavin.
if mourinho, scolari and wenger doubt him, and the fact sir alex rednose aint in for him. thats plenty enough resons for me, to not want us to sign a 27 year old at 23.7 million
