Harry Redknapp is making moves to sign Argentine international and reported Newcastle target, Pablo Aimar, this summer.
Pablo Aimar – what’s been holding Newcastle up?
Pablo is available for a reported cut-price £6m, after his club side Real Zaragoza were relegated last season to the Spanish Second Division. Real Zaragoza paid £10M for him a couple of years ago from Valencia, but now have to unload him to cut the wage bill.
The play-maker has also been linked with a move to Portuguese club Benfica, though it’s been suggested he would prefer a more lucrative move to the Premier League, with Newcastle United initially having been in center frame for the player.
But Portsmouth seem to be moving fast with their summer purchases, as Harry Redknapp has always done, and the south coast club have almost completed the Peter Crouch move, and are also in for another two potential Newcastle targets, Nicky Shorey and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
However, Redknapp hopefully will face competition for the Argentinean still from Newcastle United, although Everton and Sunderland are also in for the skillful Argentinian, who has played over 50 times for his country.
Certainly Portsmouth will be a team competing with Newcastle, Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa, West Ham and others next season for that top 6 position, there’s no doubt about that.
We’ve been linked with Aimar for weeks now, and the price quoted has been £6M or even less, so if we want him on Tyneside, what’s taking so long?
As Sam Allardyce said last year, if you wait in the transfer market two things happen, 1) the price goes up and 2) other clubs move in – and he was so right.
Sam always liked to get his transfers done early in the summer, before the market heated up, and there’s a lot to be said for that.
While we cannot and don’t want to criticize the club, because we just don’t know what’s really going on behind the scenes, it does look to the fans that Newcastle are dragging their feet on a lot of these transfer moves.
We’ll not even mention Arda and Arshavin, but we seem to be close to getting these good players – and then nothing happens. Of course it may also be that we’re just not interested in them, although that wasn’t the case with Arda and Arshavin,
We think the capture of Pablo would be great for us, and although he’s not the world class player he was a few years ago, we think Keegan could get the very best out of him, and he has the potential to be a great player for us – if we can land him.
In the Geordie vernacular – he could be a smashing little player for us.
Here’s some video of Aimar in action from youtube .
Comments very welcome, but please keep them civil.

Comment #122My concern is that is is not that MA doesnt want to splash the cash, more that the players we have approached dont want to come to Newcastle, hence the lack of activity…then where do the board go for new players?

Comment #123@spyro, we have wasted a hell of a lot of money over the years on big money flops. Thats because we have NOT had the right people in charge.
If MA gave KK the money that Souness had last season, we would be playing CL football now. He did it before and he could do it again

Comment #125Dondata i agree with you about a blend, and surely Gutierrez shows that is what we are going for, we dont know what NUFC are doing behind the scenes, just because we may miss out on the likes of Arda, Arsha etc doesn’t mean we are not going for quality players.

The scary thing about this comment Ronaldeano is it almost sounds as if you EXPECT the combination of a billionaire and kk to definitely achieve champions league football.

Comment #128I was the same, When we got Ashley for some reason i thought we might be challenging for the title again ( dreamer) ….
But i would settle for the quick fix that has happened at Pompey…..There not spending 50 million but there spening about 25 mil a season..
After selling players Ashley has only put 10 mill into the first team…That’s shocking

Comment #133Ronaldeano – For us to get anywhere near the CL we would need at least £100milion! and no garantees! I believe ashley brought in KK to appease the fans! to sell the rest of the season tickets! I also think Wise and Co. was brought in to give KK different ideas on players!
Ashley I must agree with spyro that he will only spend as much money is necessary to keep the team in the premiership! do believe though he will sell and sell soon! before next season!!
anyhow we all get peed off every now and then but thanks lads!!

Comment #137I just wonder how the season ticket sales are going. I cant for the life of me see them flying out the door at the moment 🙁 and thats sad because we pride ourselves on our loyalty.
Its painstakingly obvious, reading this blog, theres a hell of alot of frustrated fans who basically just want whats best for the club

Comment #146My opinion, as little as it counts to our great club, is that AM was more than adequately covered by Michael Owen. It is Viduka who needs replacing, my choice being Ashton as I have said before, and we need some very fast and strong CM’s to replace Barton, Butt (although he probs is still a good choice, he will need to be used less and less due to his age) and Geremi, and spend big on a CB to teach Taylor the game, someone like Collocini or Metzelder.
Aimar is a fantastic player (or was, I’m no expert on Spanish football, but when I used to watch Aimar in the Champs League he caused slight orgasms!) but he is not a necessity, and Keegan will build a great team, not buy a player because he is amazing. We will build on what we have got:
Given/Harper – Irreplaceable
Beye – Player of the season
Taylor – very promising youngster with a heart of gold
Enrique – very promising, although some way off being the finished article
Midfield 3- covered lots of ground, and provided the basis of our good run at the end of the season
N’Zog, Milner, Guttierez – Good, pacy( well 2/3 is a good ratio!) skillful, exciting wingers
Owen – Learnt the art of Midfield maestro Captain very quickly, and his timing of runs is exceptional
Martins – Fans favourite, pace to burn, something out of nothing, sweet left foot!
So Keegan will look at this and only sign players to fill the skills shortage’s he sees as necessary! Have faith, Keegan is King!

Benfica coach seems to be confident that the aimar deal wil go thro so we are gonna have to go for a modric style steal to get him now and the way our luck has been in this transfer window i jus hope we can do wat the filthy spuds did to us

Comment #148definitely a player i wanna see in black and white. would be crazy if we lost out due to negotiations breaking down over a coupla million £s. If a coupla million £s is putting us off class players these days then I’m really worried about the kinda players we’re competing for. Nevermind the top4, are we even in the same league as second tier teams like Spuds, everton, w.ham, Pompey etc????
