Sidwell Set To Sign For Aston Villa

1:23 pm, Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 180 Comments

BBC Sports is reprting that Aston Villa have agreed to sign Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell in a £5M, which is subject to him passing a medical.

Steve Sidwell – will move to Villa for £5M

First of all  £5M seems a reasonable price for the player, even though he was a free agent last year, and the London club have made a £5M profit on him in a year.

The second thing is that if Newcastle were really after him, and we don’t know if they were, we’ve lost out.

We would have liked to have Steve come to Tyneside, and at £5M he would have been a solid buy.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill now thinks he will be able to tie up the deal by tomorrow, and if so then Sidwell will then fly out to link up with Villa’s squad on their pre-season tour of Switzerland.

Sidwell, 25, failed to establish himself at all at Chelsea after moving from Reading on a free transfer last summer, and we always thought that was a bad move for him.

It would appear he is a straight replacement for captain Gareth Barry, who will shortly complete his move to Liverpool, for around £17M. These appear to be two excellent transfer deals for the Midlands club.

Sidwell was part of the brilliant Arsenal side that won the FA Youth Cup in both 2000 and 2001, and he had loan spells with Brentford and Brighton, before joining Reading in 2003.

We still expect to hear something from Newcastle this week on the transfer , as we fully we’ll be bringing in some new players shortly.

Hope so.

Comments welcome.

    A bargain!

  • 2 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:27 PM

    Thank god for that.

Dont want any ginger mercenaries here.

  • 3 gonufc // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Really? I dont think he’s worth 5.5m and am glad he has gone to them instead of us. He rejected us in favour of more money before and i wouldn’t want us to spend lots of money trying to sign him now

  • 4 Ericles // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I am not sure that KK was interested in Sidwell.
I believe Sidwell was not interested in NUFC. He rejected us to warm a bench in west London. Enough said. Still think we have some suprise incomings soon, but feel ready to agree with Rob Lee’s recent views in the paper. We are losing out in a transfer world that is dominated by greed and selfish glory hunting and swanning prima donnas. I still feel that the likes of Shorey and Sidwell will fade from the international scene, and therefore no loss to NUFC.

i bet ginger geordie isnt impressed? only kiddin matey

he will be a good signing for aston villa english players seem to like it there… strange as they are based in birmingham

  • 6 Kash2 // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:40 PM

    Proper GNER! Ginnah!!!

  • 7 indian toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:40 PM

time to get aimar or reyes in , i guess!!!

  • 8 Jim // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:42 PM

    Tal Ben Haim anyone?

  • 9 Kash2 // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:43 PM

When I was a youngin I went to Toon vs Sheff Wed, and I was sitting in Milburn stand right next to thrown in line. Mark Pemdbridge came to take a throw and I shouted
“Pembridge you ginger”. As I shouted everyone went quiet, and pretty much heard what I said. Pembridge just lookjed at me, and Stevie Watson shouted back “What about me?!” and I just got laughed at. Well funny, best moment of my Toon following apart from Ginolas goal vs Ferencvaros (was in platinum club that night)! Absolutely amazing!

  • 10 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Jim – Rather eat my own excretions.

  • 11 gonufc // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Jim- Please No!!! Ben Haim is clumsy and overpriced. He is literally a big sam style signing!!

  • 12 Davies // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Not fussed. Didn’t want him anyway.

  • 13 Davies // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Jim, have a word with yourself man.

  • 14 Toon 85 // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Wouldn’t want sidwell or ben haim, they rejected us when they were both on free transfers, so why on earth would we pay money for them?????? no thanks!

  • 15 indian toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:48 PM

nufc targets ( quality players but no big names)
    1> anton ferdinand
    2> inler
    3> reyes
    4> larsson

  • 16 Kash2 // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:49 PM

Sidwell would have been a decent buy for £2.5m if we could reduce his salary. Ben Haim at around £1m again reducing the salary!

  • 17 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:54 PM

not good enough for us…he isnt even as good as Barton

if we are going to sign a dmc, I hope we will go for a youngster with potential or someone who are better than Butt and Barton

my only worry is there are rumours that Inler will stay at Udinese, may be that’s why we try to get Sidwell…who knows

if so, move on to Fernandes or Skjelbred etc

  • 18 fiftyfive // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:55 PM

    dodged a bullet there

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:55 PM

Fernandes wil sign for Neverton and Skjelbred wont be able to do a job as a dm, hes an attacking box-to-box midfielder, he will track back but he wont sheild.

  • 20 Geoffb1830 // Jul 9, 2008 at 1:58 PM

Why is every club in the priemership buying and we are only selling or getting rid of players. Its looking like another leave it to the last minute and buy a couple of so so players that collect their pensions at the same time as playing for us.

  • 21 Joe Aussie // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Sidwell and Ben Haim not KK type of players.Don’t look for the obvious!

  • 22 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:00 PM

I just consistently read Moyes wont sign Fernandes because he lacks of consistency and he is overpriced

as for Skjelbred, only watched him once, so no comment

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Last thing i read was about 4 days ago when they were about to reach a deal for Fernandes.

  • 24 Tom // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:02 PM

Thank god for that, don’t want a player who’s been overhyped cause of one good season taking up a chunk of wages and 5m of our transfer kitty, we need quality in midfield not graft. Sidwells decent but not for that price.

  • 25 KEEGAN // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:05 PM

I was hoping we’d go in with a last minute bid to be fair. I know Sid isn’t really a KK type of player, but i’d have loved Sid here.

We must compete with the likes of Villa for players.

I am worried at how much ground others have made up. Not too long back we were in the top 4!

  • 26 Ericles // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Not only do we seem to be not recruiting we have another problem. Smith and Barton. It does look as though we are lumbered with both for the coming season. I really do hope KK has got something good up both sleeves very soon. It is time to turn to our good reserve players I think – time for Kadar, Tozer, Lua Lua etc.

  • 27 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Tom: source pls…cant find anything Fernandes is going back to Everton

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:12 PM

I saw a link on a website for an everton fan site quoting the valencia president, search it up.

  • 29 Ericles // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Another thing about Sidwell. He played for the very good Arsenal youth team. Now Wenger knows a quality youngster when he sees one. He is a master of bringing on the best young players. So why did he let Sidwell go then? Where did Sidwell go – nowhere great did he? If he is not good enough for Chelsea he is not good enough for us!

  • 30 mozza // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:18 PM

couln’t give a flying picket about sidwell gannin to villa, just glad he’s not coming to us, just a bit dissapointed he never went to the mackems to join the dog lovers revolution, where he spends bagfulls of cash on bagfulls of cack

  • 31 broon ale // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Ericles – wenger also let david bentley go.

  • 32 James // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Sidwell is a Geordie and he’s turned us down twice

Aimar would never be on KK’s list and has already agreed to join Benfica.

Just read KK has issued a tough fitness regime for pre-season to make us the fittest team in the league. What he has to remember is that it doesnt matter how fit Geremi and Smith are…THEY STILL CAN’T RUN!

  • 33 broon ale // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:23 PM

this transfer window drags like a long day at work.

i wish it was over so we could all talk about players that we have actually signed instead of talking about who we might and more annoyingly who, OTHER teams have signed.

  • 34 broon ale // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:24 PM

james. sidwell is not a geordie. he is a cockney!

  • 35 ObaFan2 // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:25 PM

Toon v Maccums, first reserves fixture lol :D

    Thrash um.

  • 36 mozza // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:26 PM

bottom line imo is we need a bare minimum of 5 players coming in, and i’m now sick of being patient, if we’d had some communication from the top to ease our fears i think we’d all be a lot happier, well i would anyway

  • 37 marat18 // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:26 PM

Has anyone heard something about Newcastle’s interest to Vladimir Bystrov from Spartak Moscow?
One Spartak fan told me that, it better has to be BS, tho.

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Marat, it probably is, we dont need aother wnger.

And didnt Bystrov say he wont move abroad in the summer unless its to a cl club? I swear i heard that somewhere.

  • 39 autibo // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:30 PM

ericles – to be fair mate, saying someone isnt good enough for chelsea doesn’t mean they’re not good enough for us. just coz he couldnt shift lampard, ballack, essien and makelele; doesn’t mean he couldn’t oust butt, geremi or barton!

although i must admit didnt want sidwell either – greedy ginger git

  • 40 mozza // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:30 PM

broon ale, it’s because i think we were all hoping for some immediate reaction, to set the mark for what we could expect next season, and it just ain’t happening, no doubt we’ll get some people coming on saying it’s all part of some grand plan and not to get frustrated, but thats just empty words at the moment, and i’ll not be convinced now untill i see some action

  • 41 Frankieboy // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:38 PM

    Not bothered

  • 42 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:40 PM

i live in reading, support newcastle and i think sidwell is brilliant (on his day), but whenever reading lost he used to walk around the shops with his WAG without a care in the world and didn’t care about his side losing. NO PASSION and THE ONLY FLAIR HE HAS ABOUT HIM IS HIS GINGER HAIR.

    not a geordie type player

this is why im glad he didn’t join us

  • 43 marat18 // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:46 PM

    Tom Toon,
never heard it, but anyway I don’t follow Spartak too much, if not to say more (that’s my most disliked club in Russia), so may be he said it.

But I agree it’s most probably BS, as I cannot find anything.

  • 44 harrier // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:46 PM

where is that jerk that said that inler was to sign today?

  • 45 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Bystrov is a good player, but he is just too lightweight for PL

also, Tom why we dont need another winger?

Duff will be sold, Jonas played mostly on the left for Mallorca , so we probably might sign another left or right winger

also, Tom: find nothing in Sky, Goal or Google…so your source might not be very reliable

  • 46 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:50 PM

    Anthony, Jonas is ours.

Lualua, Jonas, Milner, N’Zogbia – Enought for the wings.

It ws on an everton fansite with quotes from Valencia’s president, so it is reliable.

  • 47 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:53 PM

you add Lua Lua as a backup but I think he will properly loan out to play regular football, proves himself before challenging for a place in the first team

  • 48 Ross // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:53 PM

harrier-surely you didnt beleive him? lol

  • 49 geordie fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:53 PM

sidwell is very average but is better than butt and barton. Would have been an improvement. To say he isnt good enough because he wasnt good enough for chelsea is very small minded. If chelsea were a smaller club in the bottom half of the table i could accept that argument.

  • 50 mozza // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:56 PM

i wish something would happen to lift the mood a bit, am edgy as out, sick of checking news now and seeing day old pish being piped out by tribal football or eat sleep or even worse reading the comical to see that the only stories are about ex toon stars saying how keegan will get it right if where given the funds, like we dont know that, ahh bolocks sorry lads getting a bit meloncholy al sort mesell oot

  • 51 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Ino Jonas mostly plays on the left, buts hes adept to playing both sides, as can Milner.

We have the versatily and back-up, we dont need another winger.

  • 52 gorskino10 // Jul 9, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Yay open the Bubbley :P Dont rate him at all glad he isnt coming.

  • 53 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:03 PM

our hopes of a uafa cup place have just improved because:
    1)we didn’t sign sidwell
    2) babayaro is having trials at pompy
    3) we have spiderman
4)we have players such as taylor and milner (who arsenal and liverpool were interested in)
5)bently is leaving blackburn (which means less competition)
    6) barry is leaving villa (even more less competition)

thats faults with our 3 main competitors and as for west ham…ha…well they own nearly our whole injered squad 4m the souness years

  • 54 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:07 PM

” Jonas played mostly on the left for Mallorca ”

oh piss off he is a bloody Right winger he just played once as a LW against brazil because of messi

  • 55 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:08 PM

you are right on Jonas and Milner, but we are still short of a winger…they can play both on the right and left doesnt mean they wont get injured

the only reason we wont sign another one is because Geremi can cover right wing’s position…but I hope not…

according to your logic, we dont need another central midfielder as well, coz N’Zogbia and also play there

Ashton: how many times did u watch Mallorca?…and he can play both position anyway…

  • 56 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:10 PM

    Tom toon

how you know that jonas ” mostly plays on the left ”
i think you said that you never saw him play before !! fickel

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Ashton, he did play a lot on the left for Mallorca though.

  • 58 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:11 PM

Because i checked his stats on football, it shows where he mostly plays each game.

And yes i have never seen him before. So no, im not ‘fickel’.

  • 59 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:14 PM

pretty much and even spread but mostly LM for Mallorca last season.

  • 60 John // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:15 PM

I see there showing on setanta .com that Digard rejected us for the smoggies…

Wise is’nt doing much on perswading people Newcastle is the club for them…I can just about cope with Losing players to London clubs but jesus christ, losing players to the smoggies is bad

  • 61 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:16 PM

dont worry Tom, I have watched him numerous times…he mostly played on the left

  • 62 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:17 PM

I saw a replayed match yesterday when mallorca played against barca jonas was awesome he played as RW and he was motm even though they lost

  • 63 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:19 PM

as I said, he can play on the right and left….but he played mostly on the left…even he started on the left, he could still switch to the right in the same match…just like Milner

  • 64 harrier // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Ross – no it was mostly for the purposes of breaking his knees ;)

  • 65 John // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:19 PM

What was he like Ashton? Is he skillful?

  • 66 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:20 PM

Arango is mallorca’s LW you ************

  • 67 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Arango is not a left wing for god sake, he is another player who can play a few positions

  • 68 Anthony // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Ashton: Aimar is a left wing or right wing?

  • 69 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Arango normally plays second striker for Mallorca i think? But he can play really anywhere across midfield.

  • 70 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:25 PM

He was awesome he won a lot of free kicks ! he can dribble and cross and defend unlike milner
he is strong and quick but sometimes he dive’s :)

  • 71 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:25 PM

can some one please look at my comment above the arguements and see if u agree with it

  • 72 Ashton // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Mate i saw mallorca yesterdy !! they played with one bloody stricker Guiza , arango played on the left wing and jonas played on the right

  • 73 valle // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:31 PM

In answer to the headline… So?

  • 74 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:33 PM

    THat is one game….

  • 75 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Something is not right if Digard is snubbing kk to sign for boro. Thats 3 players that we have heard about now , how many more have done the same? The bookies have kk as favourite to get the sack and if there arent any quality signings they could well be right. All it takes is 3 loses in the first 3 games( which could easily happen) and kk will be under pressure.

  • 76 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:35 PM

That said I don’t think we were in for him – wages policy would prohibit maybe. Not seen Inler but if as good as some on this site say then he’d be my pick – other than the more unrealistic targets like Joe Cole, VDV and Arshavin.

  • 102 Gooderz // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Fernando – you cannot continue your pathetic claims at being a Geordie when evidence to the contrary still exists. That same evidence also makes your comment about Tom_Toon meaningless.

It’s like identity theft, and you’ve been found out and yet continue to use that same identity. It’s incredibly daft. You’re not a long lost cousin of a certain snake some of us know of?

  • 103 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:52 PM

  • 104 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Sidwell to Villa = Barry to Scousers
Barry to Scousers = Alonso to Spain
Ronaldo to Real = Berbatov to Manure?
Philips to Brum = Shola to WBA

Are there any other obvious repurcussions of deals in the offing that may give us hope?

ps ronaldo has signed I reckon and it’s being hushed to allow Manure to get replacements in without drawing rival bids – Berbatov or Huntelaar my guess

Everyone please ignore Fernando. Anyone who says “The bookies have kk as favourite to get the sack and if there arent any quality signings they could well be right. All it takes is 3 loses in the first 3 games( which could easily happen) and kk will be under pressure” clearly isn’t a Newcastle fan.

I played Rugby against St Thomas Moore school once. They had this big ginger inbred farmers boy who kept killing us. It would take 2 people to tackle that mofo!

Are you inbred fernando? Are you ginger? Westgate road is nowhere near the quayside!

so FURNANDO what sort of signings should we sign fellow geordie. We are gunna thrash tottenham, being a geordie and all u will support the toon all the way. and you will be watching the goals fly in past tottenham with us and then the next day (incase u forgot to watch the match) you can look on your fav website, Ed harrisons nufc blog, and tell us how great we are and read all about it

  • 123 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:08 PM

  • 132 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:14 PM

@Kizza-Unfortunatly spurs have pulled well clear of us with there recent signings. I still think we will beat them as we seem to be there bogey team at the moment. I personally think they will finish in the top 3 as i have heard they are close to signing bentley and veloso. We will be operating in the bottom half of the table so i dont see spurs as a direct rival and cant understand all the hatred directed towards them.

For newcastle i would like to see us sign Shorey, Chimbonda, Barmby and see if we can get some of the arsenal kids on loan.

Spyro – I’m for Ashley. Granted, the jury is out to an extent but he did get rid of FF and he has put lots of money in to make us relatively debt free. Even if he does have other motives it puts us in a better place than we were financially. At the end of the day I want to support my team, good or bad. At least with Ashley we will have a team to support. I’m hopeful that he will invest. I think KK would have spoken out by now if he doubted Ashley’s intentions.

  • 149 Spyro // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:23 PM

i agree 100% Mag Pie, i am neither for or against MA at the minute, but i can see the logic in what he is trying to do. Of course i would rather him throw money at us in the hope that we might get the success we want, but i know he wont do that so i gave up hoping for it. Anyway, the youth policy aint that bad, and i am sure we will get a good blend of players both young and experienced

  • 156 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Kizza- Spurs had a signing frenzy and it has died down a bit now. My usual site is spurscommunity but everyone is just waiting for the bentley and veloso signings to be completed. There has been a couple of youngsters sign(mponku and Bostock) but nothing to exciting going on.
I only came on here to guage the fans reaction on losing out on modric but have been lurking ever since as your fans do make me laugh.

Unfortunatly you have an owner who is a yid who is using your club to make a quick buck. I used to see your club as a rival for european places but now we are miles apart and i think you will be relegated before you have a chance of bridging the gap.

I shall bid you all farewell but will look in from time to time to see You all having a moan and praying for unrealistic signings(aeshavin, vdv, arda, lennon etc, etc) and to see who tomtoon is wanking over on you tube.
    Ta ra.

    Spyro –

Realistically that our starting 11 in August

    How would we fare?

Form at end of last season suggests not too bad

    Subs not too shabby

Personally I would like 4 or 5 through the door and they would be Joe Cole, Van der Vaart, Inler, Ashton (no not you ashton), Arda. We need creativity.

    What do you reckon?

  • 160 toon-munch // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:33 PM

News from setanta regarding seb larrson

Per Jonsson confirmed the only Premier League side to have made an offer for the Sweden international are Newcastle, although there is also interest from abroad.

  • 161 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:35 PM

fernando – ha i finally got it out of you. ed has to ban u now so now all us nufc fans can talk about whatever we want.

  • 162 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:36 PM

    VDV, Joe Cole, Arda….

You can see why rivals call us deluded.

  • 163 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Tom Toon – why so pessimistic. I reckon VDV will come. The others – probably not. Keep (or get) the faith!

  • 164 Spyro // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:39 PM

if our squad stays like that we will get 12th max i reckon, the difference between 12th and top 8 for us is our central midfielders, we need to sign a creative CM.

Van Der Vaart wants a top club if he is going to leave Hamburg so i doubt that very much. Joe Cole will never leave Chelsea for us, Arda is overpriced and not worth it, i dont rate Ashton. The only signing i would have out of those is Inler. He is a player in the mould of what we need.

  • 165 toon-munch // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:40 PM

“I have seen [the Blackburn link] in the English newspapers but I know nothing about that,” Jonsson told

“There are a lot of rumours at this time of year – the Wigan story is the same.

“The only offer I know of is from Newcastle but I haven’t heard from them in the last week.

“There is interest from abroad as well but Sebastian wants to stay in England.

“It is still early in the window – we could know more at the end of July.”

    so what r u guys thoughts ?

  • 166 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:40 PM

    Im not pessimistic, im realistic!

  • 167 harrier // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:41 PM

No probs DC i was just kidding. Inler for the toon :) :) :)

Ashley has done something very special for this club that nobody seems to recognize. No matter if our squad is terrible and we near relegation (which I highly doubt) or some economic crunch comes in, the entity that is newcastle united can financially survive. We are a debtless profitable club who for the moment is owned by a billionaire whom is unlikely to go poor like the rest of us mugs in the credit crunch. His plan for cheap players for the future is excellent in my opinion. He must be aware that he needs to – for now – sort out a first team squad that is capable of bringing us into europe while we develope the youngsters. This is why I can see spending the money, but we will have a transfer list, and they will be working on that transfer list so give em time. (Don’t worry I will whine with the rest of you while I am waiting for transfers, but I do really believe this until Ashley proves me otherwise)

  • 168 toooooon fan // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:46 PM

hello guys i am back and you’ll never guess what inler has already agreed to sign and it will be announced soon after he gets back from holiday

  • 169 AndyT // Jul 9, 2008 at 4:58 PM

HPS – any self respecting Newcastle fan with a spare £1 billion could buy out Ashley at his £420 Million and then whack £100 Million into the kitty to sign 5 £20 Million superstars, pay their wages for 3 years and still have maybe a couple of hundred million left for a rainy day.

Do you know anyone willing to fork out that much with no likleyhood of seeing any of it back?

Personally I’ll go with someone looking to make one of the highest earning clubs in the premiership a self sustaining business that is able to consistently year in year out generate the cash and young talent to keep the team at the top of the premiership. Will it take 5 years, hell no it will take 10 at least, but in that time Man U will have been crippled by debt and Abromvitch will be bored of Chelsea (he may be nice and write off his loans, he may die an inadvertantly bankrupt the club or may just screw them over completely for not winning the champions league in Moscow). The biggest competitor will be Arsenal and potentially if their owners can ever sort things out Liverpool.

What I do hope is that in a few years when he has got things well on their way that the buyers are also in it for long term success and not fast assset stripping like the Glazier/Hicks/Gillet any hedge fund/private equity deal.

  • 170 daiv // Jul 9, 2008 at 5:20 PM

MA is in this for the profit. no other reason. He’ll sell when he can get a buyer stupid enough to pay double what he put in. His own business is going down the pan and he cannot afford NUFC. Decent players will only sign for NUFC as a last resort. They are waiting for other offers and if none are forthcoming they will sign. We are getting the crumbs off the table because MA does not want to fork out. God knows what the King is thinking. And he is thinking because he dare not say what he thinks without getting the sack. Terrible situation. We’ve hardly got a squad, are signing youngsters and a lot on this blog seeem to think all is well. I despair.

  • 174 Michael // Jul 9, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Sidwell is average in every department. Works hard but doesn’t have the quality we need.

His goal record for Reading in the Prem was 4 goals in 35 appearances, yet everyone thinks he had a great season.

  • 175 CallyPissup // Jul 9, 2008 at 6:45 PM

You dont have to score goals to have a great season if your a midfielder. Sidwell was immense for Reading and its no surprise what happened to them after he left, for those saying he lacked skill, what? the guy is a tremendous passer creates plenty of chances and has a great engine. Just what we needed to remove the lethargy in our midfield. I think O Neil will get the best out of him and hes a snip for 5 mill, esp considering hes took a big wage drop.

  • 176 fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 6:58 PM

Yeah good one ross. There were no biters were there.

  • 177 AndyT // Jul 9, 2008 at 7:12 PM

The owner shouldn’t need to afford NUFC.
NUFC should be able to afford itself.

If for a football club to be successful the owner must constantly inject his own cash (as every one here would like Ashley to do) or borrow other peoples (as Freddy Shepherd has done for the last 10 years) in order to maintain its status, then it will ultimately become bankrupt. Leeds and Gretna are classic examples of both of these cases.

Like I said, if anyone can find a toon fan with an Abramovitch like fortune who wants to GIVE it to Newcastle United, then bring him on I’d love it.

As for why Ashley wont throw more money in. He’s put £250M into Newcastle, his holdings in Sports Direct are worth £800M less than when he bought the club and he lost £10M on HBOS shares, so he’s down about a billion over the last couple of years. I’d be thinking twice about chucking money into something without a bit more certainty of return in that position too.
