BBC Sports is reprting that Aston Villa have agreed to sign Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell in a £5M, which is subject to him passing a medical.
Steve Sidwell – will move to Villa for £5M
First of all £5M seems a reasonable price for the player, even though he was a free agent last year, and the London club have made a £5M profit on him in a year.
The second thing is that if Newcastle were really after him, and we don’t know if they were, we’ve lost out.
We would have liked to have Steve come to Tyneside, and at £5M he would have been a solid buy.
Villa boss Martin O’Neill now thinks he will be able to tie up the deal by tomorrow, and if so then Sidwell will then fly out to link up with Villa’s squad on their pre-season tour of Switzerland.
Sidwell, 25, failed to establish himself at all at Chelsea after moving from Reading on a free transfer last summer, and we always thought that was a bad move for him.
It would appear he is a straight replacement for captain Gareth Barry, who will shortly complete his move to Liverpool, for around £17M. These appear to be two excellent transfer deals for the Midlands club.
Sidwell was part of the brilliant Arsenal side that won the FA Youth Cup in both 2000 and 2001, and he had loan spells with Brentford and Brighton, before joining Reading in 2003.
We still expect to hear something from Newcastle this week on the transfer , as we fully we’ll be bringing in some new players shortly.
