Sidwell Set To Sign For Aston Villa

BBC Sports is reprting that Aston Villa have agreed to sign Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell in a £5M, which is subject to him passing a medical.

Steve Sidwell – will move to Villa for £5M

First of all  £5M seems a reasonable price for the player, even though he was a free agent last year, and the London club have made a £5M profit on him in a year.

The second thing is that if Newcastle were really after him, and we don’t know if they were, we’ve lost out.

We would have liked to have Steve come to Tyneside, and at £5M he would have been a solid buy.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill now thinks he will be able to tie up the deal by tomorrow, and if so then Sidwell will then fly out to link up with Villa’s squad on their pre-season tour of Switzerland.

Sidwell, 25, failed to establish himself at all at Chelsea after moving from Reading on a free transfer last summer, and we always thought that was a bad move for him.

It would appear he is a straight replacement for captain Gareth Barry, who will shortly complete his move to Liverpool, for around £17M. These appear to be two excellent transfer deals for the Midlands club.

Sidwell was part of the brilliant Arsenal side that won the FA Youth Cup in both 2000 and 2001, and he had loan spells with Brentford and Brighton, before joining Reading in 2003.

We still expect to hear something from Newcastle this week on the transfer , as we fully we’ll be bringing in some new players shortly.

Hope so.

Really? I dont think he’s worth 5.5m and am glad he has gone to them instead of us. He rejected us in favour of more money before and i wouldn’t want us to spend lots of money trying to sign him now

I am not sure that KK was interested in Sidwell.
I believe Sidwell was not interested in NUFC. He rejected us to warm a bench in west London. Enough said. Still think we have some suprise incomings soon, but feel ready to agree with Rob Lee’s recent views in the paper. We are losing out in a transfer world that is dominated by greed and selfish glory hunting and swanning prima donnas. I still feel that the likes of Shorey and Sidwell will fade from the international scene, and therefore no loss to NUFC.

When I was a youngin I went to Toon vs Sheff Wed, and I was sitting in Milburn stand right next to thrown in line. Mark Pemdbridge came to take a throw and I shouted
“Pembridge you ginger”. As I shouted everyone went quiet, and pretty much heard what I said. Pembridge just lookjed at me, and Stevie Watson shouted back “What about me?!” and I just got laughed at. Well funny, best moment of my Toon following apart from Ginolas goal vs Ferencvaros (was in platinum club that night)! Absolutely amazing!

Sidwell would have been a decent buy for £2.5m if we could reduce his salary. Ben Haim at around £1m again reducing the salary!

not good enough for us…he isnt even as good as Barton

if we are going to sign a dmc, I hope we will go for a youngster with potential or someone who are better than Butt and Barton

my only worry is there are rumours that Inler will stay at Udinese, may be that’s why we try to get Sidwell…who knows

if so, move on to Fernandes or Skjelbred etc

Fernandes wil sign for Neverton and Skjelbred wont be able to do a job as a dm, hes an attacking box-to-box midfielder, he will track back but he wont sheild.

Why is every club in the priemership buying and we are only selling or getting rid of players. Its looking like another leave it to the last minute and buy a couple of so so players that collect their pensions at the same time as playing for us.

as for Skjelbred, only watched him once, so no comment

Thank god for that, don’t want a player who’s been overhyped cause of one good season taking up a chunk of wages and 5m of our transfer kitty, we need quality in midfield not graft. Sidwells decent but not for that price.

I was hoping we’d go in with a last minute bid to be fair. I know Sid isn’t really a KK type of player, but i’d have loved Sid here.

We must compete with the likes of Villa for players.

I am worried at how much ground others have made up. Not too long back we were in the top 4!

Not only do we seem to be not recruiting we have another problem. Smith and Barton. It does look as though we are lumbered with both for the coming season. I really do hope KK has got something good up both sleeves very soon. It is time to turn to our good reserve players I think – time for Kadar, Tozer, Lua Lua etc.

Another thing about Sidwell. He played for the very good Arsenal youth team. Now Wenger knows a quality youngster when he sees one. He is a master of bringing on the best young players. So why did he let Sidwell go then? Where did Sidwell go – nowhere great did he? If he is not good enough for Chelsea he is not good enough for us!

Sidwell is a Geordie and he’s turned us down twice

Aimar would never be on KK’s list and has already agreed to join Benfica.

Just read KK has issued a tough fitness regime for pre-season to make us the fittest team in the league. What he has to remember is that it doesnt matter how fit Geremi and Smith are…THEY STILL CAN’T RUN!

this transfer window drags like a long day at work.

i wish it was over so we could all talk about players that we have actually signed instead of talking about who we might and more annoyingly who, OTHER teams have signed.

bottom line imo is we need a bare minimum of 5 players coming in, and i’m now sick of being patient, if we’d had some communication from the top to ease our fears i think we’d all be a lot happier, well i would anyway

ericles – to be fair mate, saying someone isnt good enough for chelsea doesn’t mean they’re not good enough for us. just coz he couldnt shift lampard, ballack, essien and makelele; doesn’t mean he couldn’t oust butt, geremi or barton!

although i must admit didnt want sidwell either – greedy ginger git

broon ale, it’s because i think we were all hoping for some immediate reaction, to set the mark for what we could expect next season, and it just ain’t happening, no doubt we’ll get some people coming on saying it’s all part of some grand plan and not to get frustrated, but thats just empty words at the moment, and i’ll not be convinced now untill i see some action
