Are Newcastle Still After Seb Larsson?

July 9th, 2008 · 232 Comments

Setanta Sports is reporting today, that Seb Larsson’s agent has said that Newcastle United are the only club that has bid so far for the Birmingham midfielder.

sebastian-larsson-new.jpg

Seb Larsson - he will know that Newcastle have made a bid

It’s interesting that Sebastian’s agent has refuted recent speculation linking the Birmingham midfielder with a move to either Blackburn Rovers Wigan Athletic.

His agent Per Jonsson confirmed today that the only Premier League side to have made an offer for the Swedish international are the Newcastle club, although there is also some interest from abroad.

However, Larsson’s preference is to remain in England, and we’re fairly sure that Seb would love to move to Newcastle, so what’s the holdup?

Seb is a right-sided or central midfielder and since we have just signed Argentine International Jonas Gutierrez, maybe we will pass Seb over.

But it does look like the Swede is flexible, and he’s even filled in at full back, so we think he would become a good squad player.

But we’re not sure that’s what Kevin is after in the summer.

Per Jonsson told setantasports.com today:

“I have seen [the Blackburn link] in the English newspapers but I know nothing about that,”

“There are a lot of rumors at this time of year – the Wigan story is the same.”

“The only offer I know of is from Newcastle United, but I haven’t heard from them in the last week.”

“There is interest from abroad as well but Sebastian wants to stay in England.”

“It is still early in the window - we could know more at the end of July.”

Whether Newcastle sign Seb is probably dependent on what other good central midfielders we can attract to the club this summer.

One good one we believe we could be after is Argentine Pablo Aimar, who would seem to jump at the chance to join the Magpies.

But it seems he’s almost on his way to Benfica, and it looks odds on that Steve Sidwell will sign for Aston Villa, probably as early as tomorrow.

The only way we would probably now sign Larsson is if we were willing to let James Milner leave, but that makes no sense to us.

We’ve put in a bid, but for Birmingham the bid was too low, but now that Larsson knows of Newcastle’s interest, he would hardly be happy if Birmingham refused to sell him, and it’s never worthwhile keeping an unhappy player.

Right now the Midlands club want to get as much as they can for the player, and you can hardly blame them for that, especially when they don’t want to sell the player in the first place.

What do you think about Seb Larsson?

Let us know - comments welcome - but please keep them civil - thanks.

do feel he would be a decent signing!!

  • 2 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:33

think he would be better than geremi on the right in our 4 3 3 formation

  • 3 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:34

Larsson is far better in the centre according to brummies.

  • 4 iceman // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:35

he would be great at the toon and not expensive, but whats the hold up why are we dragging our feet

  • 5 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:36

Good attacking midfielder with an eye for a killer pass. I’d take him but not at the expense of Milner.

  • 6 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:36

lets get him, i would take anyone good as long as we can get them in pre-season now.

  • 7 Nick C // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:37

I think he looks a great player. And like TT, I would see him more in the centre of the park.

  • 8 dcbashore // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:37

Don’t think he should be the centerpiece signing in the midfield, but I do think he would be a good acquisition for the club.

  • 9 Nick C // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:39

However, I reckon all of our signings might be dropped on us like the Jonas one and everything else is media hype. Waiting is doing me napper in…

  • 10 harrier // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:39

I think we are after priority one targets, and him and others such as aimar (and digard) are/were level 2 targets for if/when the level 1 targets don’t come off. My guess is that we have our ducks lined up such that when we know for sure which of our better targets we can’t get, we can swoop quick for the others. This is just my opinion.

  • 11 Kash3 // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:39

I think he’s a very good player and for £4.5m its a good buy.

  • 12 GraemeR // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:41

We seem to be missing out on a whole host of one time targets - Sidwell, Aimir and co - and we are down to 14 full time first teamers. I really feel its going to be long fruitless season unless we start to see some names (and first teamers not youngsters that may make the grade in a couple of years).

If the hold up is for MA to sell then he needs to move on quickly if not he needs to get some players in quick. As for Larrson - he would be an excellent aquisition.

  • 13 JR Lutterbach Habib // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:41

Oh, if he costs just 4,5M, it will be certainly a great buy for the club.

Seb can play in several positions, and do it very well.

And uh, I think Birmingham City doesn’t have any chance to keep that player.

  • 14 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:42

one player i like and think would be good for us , noble at west ham, i no we aint been linked but sound like our type of player

  • 15 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:44

Noble will never come, West Ham through and through, if he leaves it would be for a top 4 club.

  • 16 furrygiblets // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:44

I hope so Ed, i think he’d be a fantastic bargain

  • 17 Yahya Ahmad // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:46

A very good buy and can take our freekicks for us!

  • 18 JR Lutterbach Habib // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:46

Ed, it’s time to update the ”Newcastle United Structure”

Just to change Chris Mort to Derek Llambias. :)

  • 19 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:49

yeah but that is the type of player i reckon we will get , i really doubt we will sign anyone we have been linked with, wa do you think of koumas aint lived up to exspectations but could shine under kk

  • 20 craig chisholm // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:51

Larsson is really good. my mate is a mega bluenose all her life, she even played for birmingham ladies for 10 years - she says larsson is just about the best player they have ever had. He does seem good. We wont sign him though cos of us trying again to drill the price down so its so low we dont get anthor target. we have put an offer in but its well low. We need to up it and get this kid in. Christ, less tham five million and still young, what the hell is our clubs problem with signing players?????

  • 21 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:52

    Ho’way Seb, let’s have ya’!..
…Good buy for the price range!..

  • 22 SwedeEric // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:53

Well, his price isn´t 4,5M… Said in swedish newpapers today about newcastle to, and that Birmingham wants 100M krons, wich is around 8M pund…

Gues that´s the hold up, birmingham want more money than newcastle want to pay for him…

Would still love him to come, a player that always plays well, his highs might not be as high as Aimars, but his lows are very high indeed!

Not sure he´s worth 8M.. But If barry is 18, then 8 for seb might be fair…

  • 23 WIGAZ // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:55

Think this lad will be a good buy showed good potential last season in an average team but i think would thrive in a KK team! i think there might be a couple of more suprises in stall like the jonas buy! i would love to see Joe cole come to toon but think i’m dreaming! but hey maybe wise can convince a fellow cockney to follow him up to north east? & not to mention that he’s very good friends with roeder who could sell club to him & his hero, as he’s mentioned several times Gazza! again dreaming, but how class would it be to see him in behind front 2 with the freedom just to slaughter teams with pure skill & creativity! plus at us he would have freedom to roam unlike at chelsea stuck out on left wing! on a more realistic note i’d like to see us buy mcfadden for the role behind front 2 i think he’s a quality player & would suit KK style of play! thoughts lads?

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:55

    natedawg - Koumas!?

    No thanks!

    Id have Joe Ledley though.

  • 25 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:56

Sounds like the old trick, once a big club comes in, the price goes up!..self abusers!..

  • 26 daiv // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:58

The point is why is the agent saying that NUFC is the only club to make an offer? Because he is waiting for more offers and a choice. His first choice is not NUFC and he will sign if nothing better comes along. ordinarily this deal would have been done but times are changing.

  • 27 The Entertainers // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:58

I would like the Swede, but i do agree that he may not be the priority now we have the Argie in and look like we are keeping Milner.

I remained quite calm on here regarding transfers, but am starting to worry just slightly with the aparent lack of activity on apparent targets such as Arda and Derdiyok. If they are targets then why dont we appear more interested. Lets hope its Newcastle keeping there cards close to there chest. But it doesnt stop me for worrying a bit!

  • 28 A geordiedoonsooth // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:58

Not sure about him unless we are selling either Milner or Duff. I think we need a CB, flair MF, Defensive MF & Fwd. That lot will probably cost £25-£30m

  • 29 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:59

I reckon Joe ledley looked pretty good for cardiff in last seasons cup run!..
    …Defo worth a shot!..

  • 30 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 19:59

thought i might get slaughtered for that lol could have been worse could of said we should go for savage! still think we will get barnes

  • 31 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:02

    …Wouldn’t sell anymore either!..

  • 36 Tom_Toon // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:10

natedawg - If i had to pick one it would be Portsmouth.

  • 37 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:10

Barcelona Abroad natedawg, u got a favoured team abroad

  • 39 Keith // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:13

If Larsson wants to come to Newcastle and Birmingham are holding out for more - what better way to take away Birminghams negotiating power than for his agent to release details that Newcastle are the only bidding club!

Newcastle can demand an answer by a certain date or they move to another player and Birmingham are then high and dry -could be genius business again! Fingers crossed!

  • 40 valle // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:14

Well… I think we are throwing allot of names out there as decoys and considering how high on the agenda a playmaker is, i would guess that Larsson would already have been in the bag if he truly was our target… I think we are going for a better player, but perhaps as a backup later in the window.

  • 41 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:15

i would say portsmouth 3 rd for me , my choice would be arsenal mainly because like portsmouth when they want to they can play brilliant football, i would also like man u but anyone associated with that club are tossers,

ally yeah barca about two years ago when ronaldinio messi and eto were all playing amazing football

  • 42 Ally // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:15

    agreed valle

  • 43 Nick C // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:16

I hate everyone. I have become ever more bitter and twisted. I do have a healthy respect for Arsenal though. Proper club.

  • 44 valle // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:16

natedawg… I have no second team, but there are teams that i dislike more than others… I would say that one team i dislike less is Arsenal, i think their fans are ok people and they play some nice football… Also they hate Spurs as much as me

  • 45 Davey G // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:16

    Good call punk skunk!
There’s nothing better than 6 point off Spuds, and goal glut to boot!!

Does anyone think that it is very very strange that KK is the quietest he has ever been whilst a Manager of a Footy Club??

Normally you cant get him away from the front of the cameras??

    Also a footnote…..
When the comments were stopped on here the other day, it was after a Spud fanm came on and started abusing one of our bretheren…………I hope we give the Spuds another roasting next term, just for that turd making a couple of days without the blog 2 of the most boring days of my life …lol

  • 46 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:18

natedawg - never thought I’d have a 2nd club but have to admire Villa for putting a charity on their shirt for 1 season. Plus don’t like the way Barry has gone about leaving. So, Villa would be my second team if forced to choose.

  • 47 natedawg // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:19

yeah thats whats most of my mates say arsenal , and the fact they despise spurs just sweetens it lol

  • 48 Lull // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:22

I would never pick a second-club from the premiership! they’re after all,our rivals. on side note, i do have high respect for arsenal and liverpool, only those two.

  • 49 Nick C // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:22

What about your 3 biggest hates, leaving the mackems out. Thats a given.
Mine are Boro, Tottenham and Everton.

Boro are pathetic. Plastic stadium and a joke support. Weird people too.

Tottenham are just properly annoying. Chas n Dave. Horrible smug Home Counties fans. So in Arsenal’s shadow.

Everton. I hate that “peoples club” “school of science” cack they come out with. Scouse Mackems…

  • 50 Lull // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:25

mine would be Manure, Spuds and Wham

  • 51 Davey G // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:27

    Chelsea
    Boro
    Spuds

    spurs
    man u
    boro

  • 55 Danny G // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:32

Hes a central player…Just because he has played wide before does not mean he is coming at the expense of Milner!

Larrson would be to replace the thug Barton or the incompetence of Emre!

Very good engine and free kick taker…Would take him in a heartbeat and he will only get better!

Also brought through the Arsenal youth team so you know hes been taught how to play football properly!

PS I hate Boro and Spurs with a passion!! lol

They are living in cloud cuckoo land!!

I cant wait to give them a bigger hammering next season!

  • 58 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 20:35

Lads - Arshavin might be tempted by a job moonlighting in MA’s other business. The Zenit site says

“Andrey has successfully defeated his thesis “Development of the sports wear production process” and graduated with the diploma of a fashion designer”

Come to NUFC son and we’ll let you design the shirts - black and white stripes mind!

Davey G - I can forgive KK being a little quiet at the moment being as how they’ve had a family tragedy and all.

Is it wrong and selfish of me to worry if that will unduly affect his transfer persuing?

Talking of second clubs, a friend of a friend chose to give up supporting West Ham about thirteen years ago because he wanted to follow a lower league side instead. He chose Orient.

Though I know I could never really follow any other team but the Toon (I lived near Valencia for a while but couldn’t get interested as a second team, nor in New York where I live now) I think there’s something admirable in doing that, choosing a club from a lower league. He’s very much an avid Orient fan now. Imagine a Chelsea, Man U or Spurs fan doing that for example???!!!

  • 81 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 21:48

i promise all of you that we will have at least 3-4 new signings before the window closes.

KK will not allow our squad to get so thin. he knows what we want and he knows what he gave us last time around. he knew how he did it last time and he will do it again.

3-4 signings are coming. we are losing out on targets..true..as frustrating as this may be

however we have a very large scouting team and there are officially 350 players in europe looking for a new club. and newcastle are well aware of that

  • 82 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 21:49

  • 90 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 9, 2008 at 21:57

Kizza not being funny mate - I hope for more than 3 -4 players as we would have gettn rid of more

    when you consider we need
    2 CB’s 1 LB 1 DM 1 AM
If duff, smith and ameobi go we also
    need:
    1RW 1FORWARD
    This is a minimuim imo
then we need to look at replacing Viduka, geremi, cacapa

    I defo want more than 3 - 4 players
when you think about it most of our targets have been only £4 -6million!! so funding no more than £30m with our own sales!!

  • 91 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 21:59

i agree i think kk could work wonders with players like him. but only if we gave them a season in reserves/bench before making them first team material

  • 92 kizza // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:01

i agree with you on that. all i said is that a promise we will get 3-4 new signings and i think the rest will be our youth. but we will ger 3-4 new signings and others will just be a bonus

  • 93 The Entertainers // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:02

At the moment we have a squad of 21 players.
This is from the official web site and includes:
    Duff
    Cacapa
    Barton
Ameobi (and i’ve added our new lad)
Now out of those 4 players i can only see Shola def’ leaving. A question mark still hangs over Barton, but i think we all know Kev wants to keep the lad, whether we agree or not. As for Duff and Cacapa, imo i believe they will still be around unless we get an offer we cant refuse (unlikely).

So if you say we have a squad of 20 players, we are still short about 4 or 5 to have a solid first team squad. Albeit one where if we need to we can call on promising youngsters.

Scolari has just signed in at mega bucks Chelski, where he can have as many players as he wants, but has stated he only wants 25 players in the squad and regardless of respective clubs talent, this seems to be a sensible number.

And for imo, i believe we are short at LB, CB, DM,AM and FW.

  • 96 Dannufc // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:05

Getting worried about the upcoming season i really hope we can keep up with the likes of Villa, Man c, Tottenham, Everton and even Portsmouth. Sounds sad. Anyway really hope we get a decent defender or two ie Cuellar and Kompany. For midfield Inlar 100% yes! Got the feeling tho well pull off One Big(ish) signing maybe Mario Gomez.
With OWEN FIT nufc will be a whole lot deadlier this season as im positive hell get the supply hes benn starved of.

  • 97 kieran // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:07

true. well at least ronaldo is injered first day of the season to give us more of a chance of competing for top place on the first day of the season like we did last year against bolton

  • 99 The Entertainers // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:09

Just a quick thought on Sidwell:

Few weeks ago Villa looked as if they had snared Sidwell.
Then the transfer lost pace in the Barry troubles.

Only a day or two ago we hear in the press Newcastle are thinking about making a bid and days later he once again has all but signed for Villa.

Am i being cynical or does anyone else suspect the players agent/ current club has made up some dross about us to hurry the transfer through?…

  • 100 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:11

isn’t that the way of agents know? and football clubs in general!!

  • 101 kieran // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:12

i just hope our next signing is as classic as smithy from gavin and stacy. if so then we will be brilliant

  • 102 The Entertainers // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:12

My worry is if we do pull in a big striker signing like Gonez, it will be the end of Martins.

As Keegan will play 2 upfront a little and large and when Owens fit, the captain plays.

I would in all honesty prefer Derdiyok.

I know he does not come with the Germans reputation, but he looks very good now and will get better, plus a hell of a lot cheaper

Y’right TT, about Ledley…Which says it all about our dirth of midfielders!..

  • 107 Dannufc // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:18

Thats true id hate to see Martins out the squad he’d put 20+ goals away easy playing at a club with a decent midfield (tho we could have a classic midfield soon).

Cant argue with all the links to various midfielders but if theres one thing that will get every one of our players to stand up and take notice it will actually be the signing of a big striker i feel.

  • 108 Punk Skunk // Jul 9, 2008 at 22:19

  • 143 Jim // Jul 9, 2008 at 23:35

I was looking at the ‘official’ site tonight and at the 1st team for 08/09. There’s gaps for 2 defenders, 1 midfield (Gutierrez isn’t listed) and Ameobe’s where Carrol should now be. So there’s only space for a LB and RB if Duff, Barton, Smith and others unknown stay but that’s another issue.

  • 148 SwedeEric // Jul 10, 2008 at 0:09

DOn´t understand why people se Pavluchenko as a great buy? Sure, he played well in 3 games in the euros… But before that he hasn´t prove even close to the quality to take the PL by storm… His technic is shocking and his finishing is worse than Martins! Don´t get fooled by the euros. If you should buy a player for what they did in the euros, then Gomez wouldn´t be high on that list, would he? Still would take him 100 times before Pavlu…

And that site football rumors is a waste of time reading, in my opinion, if you are looking for some truth… To even think we have Veloso, Turan and Arshavin already tide up is madnes I say, madnes! :) Would love it thou…

  • 149 Jim // Jul 10, 2008 at 0:09

Whatever happens, I’m waiting with more eager anticipation about the results of this transfer window than I ever have. There’s something more substantial in the air than the trophy signing era I was frakly sucked in to.

Larsson is top class, he would be a perfect signing, technically excellent, fast, can beat players on the dribble, and also score goals from free kicks.

Did i mention he is young.

4.5 m is nothing for this lad, especially if we want 2.5m for Shola

Sign him. Perfect for a 3 man midfield

I believe it has been stated by Ashley he wants to challenge for a top spot in the league, in which case why are we looking at club players like Larrsen, Skjelbred etc.
If ashley is serious he has to go more upmarket, or settle for a repeat of last season.
Seems like last seasons finish has made it difficult to attract anyone to the club (Digard)
That in combination with the austerity program
currently in force makes for a bleak future.
Fans dont seem to understand the reality and fail to see why anyone would turn down an opportunity to play for the club.
Unless there is a change of plan I for one am not looking forward to the upcoming season.
The uncertainty surrounding the club(denials in regards to selling the club that few believe) do little to attract prospects and tend unsettle the fans.
    Just terrible PR.

This is the sort of sneaky deal Wise should be tying up NOW so that folks have time to settle in. It never works to sign players on the deadline, they are just not settled when the season kicks off.
I really rate this guy. Far too good for brum IMHO. If we don’t act now I think Fergie might snap him up. Come on Ashley !! Put your money where your mouth is !!

  • 158 Jim // Jul 10, 2008 at 0:47

I absolutely agree about concluding transfer deals as early as possible. I think one of the difficulties is that agents prefer to tout their wares. Look at Larssons agent.

    RB-LB- 2 x CB’s 2x cm and at least 1 striker. Seven players to make the squad-minimum.

  • 161 tom tomb // Jul 10, 2008 at 1:00

Jim that official site- has kk got owt to do with the team at all now? As he stated Alan Smith is a forward not a midfielder. The site says he’s a midfielder!

  • 162 Jim // Jul 10, 2008 at 1:28

    Tom Tomb…

That’s a question that shouldn’t need to be asked but I agree with your doubt. KK’s gone very quiet since the Summit with Ashley, Mort, Wise and Jimenez but then he has been on holiday. There’s an uncertain atmoshere but I think it’s the responsibility of the Clubs Media team to communicate more effectively. Questions like “Kevin, do you feel marginalised?” “Mike, could you state your personal 10 year plan for Newcastle United?” “Denis, what about yours?”

I’ve faith in Keegan to do his damned best with the resources at his disposal and would walk with him to the end because I believe him to be a man of honour as demonstrated by stepping down as England manager. He will always do what’s best for the club over himself.

Anyway, the immediate ambition will be demonstrated in this transfer window and realised by January.

As for Smith, if Keegan has faith who am I to question? Mind, in the last 4 years he’s had 94 domestic league appearances (61 Manc U./ 33 the Toon) and scored 7 goals (7 Manc U./ 0 the Toon). He’s no striker.

“”I can’t get used to the chaotic way of life in London, where everyone is racing around 24 hours a day. It is uncomfortable and I’m mentally tired.”

What a poor excuse for being disloyal. What NUFC dont need is scum bags like this guy.

The Colombian international has been targeted by some of Europe’s giants, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, the latter of whom are desperately seeking a prolific goal-scorer to lead their line.

But the Gunners have reportedly leaped the head of the queue and are willing to fork out ₤8million for Falcao, although los Millonarios are demanding ₤12million.

However, given Emmanuel Adebayor is edging ever closer to a mega-money Emirates exit, Wenger and co may just dish out the extra cash to land the 22-year-old hitman.

I’ve been monitoring this guy for the last 5 months and recomending him on this site aswell as playing some videos from YouTube.
He could be our new Shearer

Fernando……Garbage separation please,, cause the team you just put except Owen and Given is pure GARBAGE.

  • 195 fernando // Jul 10, 2008 at 8:50

REALLY. That first 11 won a trophy last season so cant be that bad. Given and owen would defo improve the bench

  • 196 Hadji // Jul 10, 2008 at 8:55

Fernando…..You can bring the world superstars in your team but you’ll still be behind Arsenal and Chelsea.
At least we rule the North East,we have a saying in my country”Its better to be number 1 in the village than to be LAST in the city”.

  • 197 Midjew // Jul 10, 2008 at 8:57

Bale DIDNT actually WIN a trophy.

Just read that Zenit rejected 19mln offer for Arshavin from english club (Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle are said to remain in competition) and want 24mln for the player!

They lost their plot I believe.

  • 199 Hadji // Jul 10, 2008 at 9:03

Midjew…..Who brought them the cup,it was our ex man Woodgate.
So Fernando you should be gratefull for that.

  • 200 fernando // Jul 10, 2008 at 9:15

You dont rule the north east. Sunderland have a better manager, more money and the most vocal supporters in the league. They will finish above newcastle as will boro who are outbidding newcastle for players.

  • 201 Patrick // Jul 10, 2008 at 9:16

I don’t believe Newcastle is still after the overrated Arshavin; however, this whole matter is just like a soap opera or reality TV show. “Where is Andrei going anyways?”

Finger crossed for Inler! and no more unrealistic jokes please.
