WBA Back In For Shola Ameobi

July 9th, 2008 · 33 Comments

It looks like another slow day as far as news on Newcastle United, but it does look like West Brom may have rekindled their interest in Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.

Shola Ameobi - WBA interested again

It’s very slow for news, but not unlike the time recently, when Newcastle announced we had signed Gutierrez, and we’re checking the official site regularly for who we may bring in next. Surely we’ll get another player in this week.

Shola’s proposed move to The Hawthorns appeared to have collapsed last week, when Shola was all ready to sign for the club, but then there was a chance that Kevin Phillips would stay at WBA for another year, and the deal got shelved.

However, over the weekend Phillips decided he will indeed move to Birmingham, so the Ameobi move is back on, as we suggested last Saturday..

Ameobi is keen to leave Newcastle so he can get regular first-team football, but it appears that the asking price of £3M has put a lot of clubs off.

Shola is now back in training and his transfer out of Newcastle has dragged on for several weeks, and we think if Newcastle get a reasonable offer for Shola, say even £2.5M, they’ll be pleased to take it, because Shola is not part of Keegan’s plans at Newcastle.

The other problem is that Shola’s on big wages at the club, and that’s why it’s so difficult for us to unload players, because we pay a lot of them too much money, and certainly more than they deserve.

Hopefully, Mike Ashley is changing that, although he’ll still pay good wages for good players who produce at the club, like young Steven Taylor, who got a great new 3 year contract recently.

Stoke City, Ipswich Town and Norwich City have all been in contact with Newcastle, to ask how much the Magpies want for Ameobi, but they didn’t follow through with their interest.

Former Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder is now in charge at Carrow Road, and had an excellent relationship with the striker, during the time he managed the Tyneside club, and Shola certainly scored the goals when Glenn was in charge.

A source close to the player told the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“Shola would be willing to move to Norwich because he enjoyed working with Glenn Roeder and he gets on well with (Norwich assistant manager) Lee Clark, but the problem is the fee and his wages.”

“At this stage, Norwich haven’t got the money to sign him, but they are hoping Newcastle will accept a reduced offer the closer it gets to the start of the season.”

Another potential transfer for Shola, but we must say this story seems like deja vu, all over again.

Comments welcome, but keep them civil - thanks.

Bugger. I never usually go in for that First, or wall virginity rubbish. I usually don’t get here until everybody else has had a comment up.

are west brom as bad as newcastle in the transfer window? they are so slow, get it done and sign him…

shola needs to move on to give himself a career back

  • 5 Davies // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:18

Anyhoo, WBA may well be in for Shola, but Harry’s in for Aimar, Ince is in for Seb Larsson and Arsene is looking at Inler.

If any of these boys were targets, Mr Squinty had better pull his finger out.

  • 6 Ericles // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:19

It would be OK to see Shola go to Norwich. He would do better there I am sure with Roeder and Clarky. All the best to him. Wish he had made the grade with us. Not to be.

  • 7 Leo // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:22

AND it just seems like nowich are penny pinching trying to get us to let him to cheap to them because glen roeder is the manager.

    well tough

  • 8 Mark // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:24

A move to either West Brom or Norwich would be a good move for Ameobi. He’s never gonna make it as a first teamer at the toon but might be decent for either of those teams

  • 9 dan_from_france // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:26

hurry up and go we need to get some signings in and quick and looks like were not gonna get aimr what shame portsmouth r after him now seems like were really slow or somefin but come on newcastle sign some one get innler, per, aimar we need them all we are paper thin already get rid of ameobi well be able to feild and subs but thats it. brig in come on necastle

  • 10 Spyro // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:27

oh for gods sake ameobi, just go, no one wants to ever see you play in a black and white shirt again

  • 11 filthy // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:29

With all this talk of high wages at clubs, why not do as a lot of businesses are doing. If the clubs adopt a pay for performance scheme that the players can achieve more, then this would drive the wage bill down and provide incentive for players to do well. Obviously they do this to some extent with goal bonuses etc but it needs to be based more on the game itself. Milner, for example, would do very well by that. This would mean that the clubs would have to reassess the wage for every player, however, when transfer time comes along, more realistic prices can be assigned.

He has to do what is best for himself and that isnt here. Even if he has to take a pay cut someone his age should be starting and he isnt. Lots of good times for us but his time is up. On another topic 666 people have voted on the most recent poll and the site is now cursed.

EDIT: 668 people have now voted but we are still cursed :(

  • 13 broon ale // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:35

please just leave shola! your transfer saga is more complicated than cristiano ronaldo’s.

  • 14 Hadji // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:38

Ed….I was only wondering if you could start a topic about FF vs MA.
I really really want to see our fans opinions.

  • 15 Bosck // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:38

Harry really has gone mad this time.

according to official nufc website babayaro is now on a trial at Portsmouth. i rated babayaro before he joined us but he then just seemed willing to take the money and just always be injured, and i cant see him changing at portsmouth.

  • 16 chuck // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:39

Dont know why they want to get rid of Shola so badly, I always thought he was decent, with a lot more potential to show, hope this does`nt come back to bite us in the ass.
And how come you loyal geordie fans never gave word of support for a local lad ? As i recall there was plenty of support for Taylor,( get his new contract signed etc.)
Dont tell me everyone thought he was crap, you dont get to play regularly for the national side (under 21) if you are crap.
I would like to hear your reasons ? or should I say excuses.

  • 17 Hadji // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:39

Broon Ale…..LOL mate, you’re damn right about that.

  • 18 Spyro // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:41

Shola is rubbish, i have NEVER thought he would make it, he is a poor mans Adebayor….a poor, poor, POOR mans Adebayor! Awful player.

  • 19 toony loon // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:44

why havent we gone in for crouch? we need someone who can get his head on things.. so owen and aba can get on the end of them..

shola cant do it, he isnt a premiership striker. never will be.
he has had chances, and done nothing. as a club we cant just defend him and say he’s a local lad and all that crap, if he isnt good enough. he should go, and be replaced by someone better. its as simple as that.
he is a striker, and he is paid to score goals, he doesnt score goals.
we shouldnt even be considering keeping him. he infuriates me, for the past few seasons we havent gone out and bought a decent striker, because he exists, every new manager has decided to give him a fresh chance. and he has repaid them with bugger all.

  • 20 toony loon // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:47

and dont bring up the under 21’s. they have won nothing, and its no wonder with him playing regularly

  • 21 Kash2 // Jul 9, 2008 at 10:50

Another day and no new players. Does anyone hold an optimistic thought that signings will come along like buses?

  • 22 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:02

Japenese trains are better Kash2 one every 2 minutes

  • 23 Fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:05

i think kk and ma are trying to do the signings on the cheap so i dont expect to see to much quality or a large amount of players coming in. I heard from the sports desk last night that blackburn are in talks with larsson of birmingham as a replacement for spurs bound bentley. Thats another player who would have been perfect for the toon.

  • 24 Fernando // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:06

larsson that is not overpriced bentley/.

  • 25 gorskino10 // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:12

Hes on his way to Hull or WBA but for those teams he will do great but not for Newcastle.

I have tried to write several comments but I am feeling so apathetic with the news today, I just cannot be bovvered. :(

  • 27 WIGAZ // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:34

I’m sick of hearing about this. Just GO!!! he was never going to be the answer for shearer’s replacement! i remember hearing some loon say he could be! the only guy worthy of replacing big al (if it’s possible!) plays at west ham & wears No9 Mr ashton! wish shola luck wherever he ends up but this is just getting ridiculous now!

  • 28 chuck // Jul 9, 2008 at 11:48

    “Loontoon”
You dont get to play on a regular basis for the under 21`s without being a decent player and I think you are confusing them with NUFC using the statement “they havent won anything”.
Ameobi unfortunately was playing with a hip injury for an entire season and following recovery from surgery was never given the opportunity to play.
Alan Smith who is awfull was given loads of games ahead of Shola, whats that about ?

  • 29 Bosck // Jul 9, 2008 at 12:30

chuck at least smith did enough to get booked when he was on the pitch. the games ameobi was given last season he was brought in to hold the ball up like viduka does and totally failed to do so.

ameobi was a good potential young striker 4-5 years ago. now for whatever reason he has not fulfilled that potential and is not the striker we need to take the club forward. whether or not you like smith he has played at the top and scored plenty of goals in the champions league and premiership.

  • 30 MAG PIE // Jul 9, 2008 at 13:14

Shola is skilfull but has no ‘football brain’ and fails to anticipate. He gives the appearance of laziness. He has been pretty woeful for some time now and I’m pleased he’s off. Carroll lacks the skill of SA but makes up for it in effort. I think he could become a very good target man, if he gets enough experience. I’d loan him out again but to a footballing side who play in the same way Keegan will have us playing.

  • 31 toonoot // Jul 9, 2008 at 13:28

You put your left leg in. Your left leg out. In out. In out. Shake it all about. Oh Shola Ameobi ….

  • 32 baggie boy // Jul 9, 2008 at 14:04

You lot make me laugh. Rubbish for us but would be good for them! Surely if he is as bad as you all say then he aint any good for anyone.
The baggies are signing some good young players and don’t tink your man falls in to that catagory. Have you tried touting him to the dingles? I here Mcarthy has an eye for a player with poor movement poor touch who likes big wages :)

  • 33 toony loon // Jul 9, 2008 at 16:47

England under 21’s have not won anything. playing bad players regularly is the reason why.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
