It looks like another slow day as far as news on Newcastle United, but it does look like West Brom may have rekindled their interest in Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.
Shola Ameobi - WBA interested again
It’s very slow for news, but not unlike the time recently, when Newcastle announced we had signed Gutierrez, and we’re checking the official site regularly for who we may bring in next. Surely we’ll get another player in this week.
Shola’s proposed move to The Hawthorns appeared to have collapsed last week, when Shola was all ready to sign for the club, but then there was a chance that Kevin Phillips would stay at WBA for another year, and the deal got shelved.
However, over the weekend Phillips decided he will indeed move to Birmingham, so the Ameobi move is back on, as we suggested last Saturday..
Ameobi is keen to leave Newcastle so he can get regular first-team football, but it appears that the asking price of £3M has put a lot of clubs off.
Shola is now back in training and his transfer out of Newcastle has dragged on for several weeks, and we think if Newcastle get a reasonable offer for Shola, say even £2.5M, they’ll be pleased to take it, because Shola is not part of Keegan’s plans at Newcastle.
The other problem is that Shola’s on big wages at the club, and that’s why it’s so difficult for us to unload players, because we pay a lot of them too much money, and certainly more than they deserve.
Hopefully, Mike Ashley is changing that, although he’ll still pay good wages for good players who produce at the club, like young Steven Taylor, who got a great new 3 year contract recently.
Stoke City, Ipswich Town and Norwich City have all been in contact with Newcastle, to ask how much the Magpies want for Ameobi, but they didn’t follow through with their interest.
Former Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder is now in charge at Carrow Road, and had an excellent relationship with the striker, during the time he managed the Tyneside club, and Shola certainly scored the goals when Glenn was in charge.
A source close to the player told the Newcastle Journal this morning:
“Shola would be willing to move to Norwich because he enjoyed working with Glenn Roeder and he gets on well with (Norwich assistant manager) Lee Clark, but the problem is the fee and his wages.”
“At this stage, Norwich haven’t got the money to sign him, but they are hoping Newcastle will accept a reduced offer the closer it gets to the start of the season.â€
Another potential transfer for Shola, but we must say this story seems like deja vu, all over again.

Anyhoo, WBA may well be in for Shola, but Harry’s in for Aimar, Ince is in for Seb Larsson and Arsene is looking at Inler.
If any of these boys were targets, Mr Squinty had better pull his finger out.

It would be OK to see Shola go to Norwich. He would do better there I am sure with Roeder and Clarky. All the best to him. Wish he had made the grade with us. Not to be.

A move to either West Brom or Norwich would be a good move for Ameobi. He’s never gonna make it as a first teamer at the toon but might be decent for either of those teams

With all this talk of high wages at clubs, why not do as a lot of businesses are doing. If the clubs adopt a pay for performance scheme that the players can achieve more, then this would drive the wage bill down and provide incentive for players to do well. Obviously they do this to some extent with goal bonuses etc but it needs to be based more on the game itself. Milner, for example, would do very well by that. This would mean that the clubs would have to reassess the wage for every player, however, when transfer time comes along, more realistic prices can be assigned.

He has to do what is best for himself and that isnt here. Even if he has to take a pay cut someone his age should be starting and he isnt. Lots of good times for us but his time is up. On another topic 666 people have voted on the most recent poll and the site is now cursed.

according to official nufc website babayaro is now on a trial at Portsmouth. i rated babayaro before he joined us but he then just seemed willing to take the money and just always be injured, and i cant see him changing at portsmouth.

Dont know why they want to get rid of Shola so badly, I always thought he was decent, with a lot more potential to show, hope this does`nt come back to bite us in the ass.
And how come you loyal geordie fans never gave word of support for a local lad ? As i recall there was plenty of support for Taylor,( get his new contract signed etc.)
Dont tell me everyone thought he was crap, you dont get to play regularly for the national side (under 21) if you are crap.

shola cant do it, he isnt a premiership striker. never will be.
he has had chances, and done nothing. as a club we cant just defend him and say he’s a local lad and all that crap, if he isnt good enough. he should go, and be replaced by someone better. its as simple as that.
he is a striker, and he is paid to score goals, he doesnt score goals.
we shouldnt even be considering keeping him. he infuriates me, for the past few seasons we havent gone out and bought a decent striker, because he exists, every new manager has decided to give him a fresh chance. and he has repaid them with bugger all.

i think kk and ma are trying to do the signings on the cheap so i dont expect to see to much quality or a large amount of players coming in. I heard from the sports desk last night that blackburn are in talks with larsson of birmingham as a replacement for spurs bound bentley. Thats another player who would have been perfect for the toon.

I’m sick of hearing about this. Just GO!!! he was never going to be the answer for shearer’s replacement! i remember hearing some loon say he could be! the only guy worthy of replacing big al (if it’s possible!) plays at west ham & wears No9 Mr ashton! wish shola luck wherever he ends up but this is just getting ridiculous now!

You dont get to play on a regular basis for the under 21`s without being a decent player and I think you are confusing them with NUFC using the statement “they havent won anything”.
Ameobi unfortunately was playing with a hip injury for an entire season and following recovery from surgery was never given the opportunity to play.
Alan Smith who is awfull was given loads of games ahead of Shola, whats that about ?

chuck at least smith did enough to get booked when he was on the pitch. the games ameobi was given last season he was brought in to hold the ball up like viduka does and totally failed to do so.
ameobi was a good potential young striker 4-5 years ago. now for whatever reason he has not fulfilled that potential and is not the striker we need to take the club forward. whether or not you like smith he has played at the top and scored plenty of goals in the champions league and premiership.

Shola is skilfull but has no ‘football brain’ and fails to anticipate. He gives the appearance of laziness. He has been pretty woeful for some time now and I’m pleased he’s off. Carroll lacks the skill of SA but makes up for it in effort. I think he could become a very good target man, if he gets enough experience. I’d loan him out again but to a footballing side who play in the same way Keegan will have us playing.

You lot make me laugh. Rubbish for us but would be good for them! Surely if he is as bad as you all say then he aint any good for anyone.
The baggies are signing some good young players and don’t tink your man falls in to that catagory. Have you tried touting him to the dingles? I here Mcarthy has an eye for a player with poor movement poor touch who likes big wages

England under 21’s have not won anything. playing bad players regularly is the reason why.
