Newcastle Inler Signing May Be Imminent

10:04 am, Thursday, July 10th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 103 Comments

After missing out on midfield stars Steve Sidwell and Didier Digard recently, Newcastle United are reported to be at an advanced stage of talks with Switzerland midfielder Gokhan Inler, and we think the signing is imminent, and could even be announced on the Newcastle United official web site very shortly.

Gokhan Inler – Newcastle about to sign him?

The Daily Mirror is reporting today that Newcastle have almost reached an agreement for the midfielder, who was impressive during Euro 2008, and who only signed for the Italian side Udinese Calcio last seaso, from FC Zurich.

Inler stands 5’11″ and was born in Olten, Switzerland, but is of Turkish descent, and is reported to have a £5M buy-out clause in his contract.

His club Udiense are said to be unhappy their star player is set to move, and are said to be trying to keep him at the Spanish club with an improved contract offer.

But it looks like the Swiss international wants to move to the Premier League, and Keegan and Newcastle are willing to pay the transfer fee of around £5M, which would be a bargain, and hopefully we can satisfy Gokhan with a decent wage package offer to the player.

Manager Kevin Keegan wants to bring the the gifted attacking star to Tyneside, and if we can get him for around £5M, we think that will be two excellent buys for the club within the last 10 days or so.

Argentine Jonas Gutierrez was a great coup for the club, and Inler would be another good addition to the squad, and both would presumably go straight into the starting eleven at the club.

That’s exactly the type of player Newcastle need to improve their squad this summer, and it’s something that Kevin has talked about a lot.

We are hearing rumors from inside the club, and that’s all they are right now, that we may be announcing a signing today, but we have no idea if it will be Gokham, since we are also interested in Seb Larsson of Birmingham. We don’t even know if that rumor is true of course – but we’ll see.

We have already made a formal offer for the Swedish International, who turned 24 in mid June, and yesterday his agent said that it’s the only offer Birmingham have received for the player so far, and Seb wants to play in the Premier league.

However, his agent said yesterday that while Newcastle were the only club to have made a formal offer for the player, he hadn’t heard from the Magpies for a week, so we think the signing, if announced, is unlikely to be him.  That could also be a ruse to give the clubs time to reach a deal.

Back to Gokhan Inler – and he can leave the Serie A club after just one season, because of the fixed fee in his current contract.

We do think that Inler would be another very good signing for the club to go with the coup we seem to have pulled off for Jonas Gutierrez.

We’ll be checking that www.nufc.co.uk site a lot today.   :D

Comments welcome.

Ed…..Have you had your coffee yet mate :-)
    Its Italian side not Spanish.
    Cheers

  • 2 John // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Hope your right Ed…Would be nice to get a signing today…Calm us all down a bit…

Been honest , I was’nt overly impressed with him in the Euro Tournament but seeing some off the comments that have been posted about him People seem to hold him in high regard … 5 mill doe’snt seem to much either

  • 3 autibo // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

get him signed – great in euro’s, but i though he was more of a holding midfielder i.e. butt’s successor…

  • 4 domtoon // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

    Comaannnnn!!

  • 5 Brownrob // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

    Wall virginity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 6 Ben_BKK // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Ed, once again Udinese is in Italy, not Spain :P

I really hope we do get this guy in, we need to seriously revamp our midfield, and for 5M that would definitely be a great buy.

  • 7 Tom // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Would be a great signing for £5m, him or Sidwell for about the same price… no contest really, Inler will be what we’ve been looking for to partner Butt or Butts replacement.

  • 8 andrew huish // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:14 AM

hope we do. come the toons

  • 9 Danny // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Hopefully the £5 million will be put to good use for this player, cause we really dont know too much about him do we? He is still a youngster, but then again, did Keegan ever buy a bad player?
Looking forward to the official announcment, if there’ll be any :)
I also think the swede will be the next one in, they’ve just put him on hold until the Inler deal is done.

  • 10 Brownrob // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I dont rate him. I would prefer albelda, palombo or ernst. I remember man yoo signing podolski after a good tournament and he was a flop.

  • 11 HonoraryGeordie // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I got the impression from what had been said before, and from the vague recollections of the Euro’s, that Inler was a DM not AM?

  • 12 andrew huish // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM

    hope so .ed

  • 13 Leo // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM

hope h is we need a signing

  • 14 Spyro // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM

He is a CM, i dont believe this news, it sounds like the daily mail are just making stuff up because we aint telling them anything

  • 15 liamtoonbirchy // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM

wow, when i seen his quality in the euros i asked TT if we could get him and he said maybe for 8-10m. 5m is a bargain for a top player like inler but i dont think its a done deal yet, i am definately not getting to excited incase the worst happens.

Any swiss fans got news from over there?

and Ed i hope your source is a good one

  • 16 Patrick // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:18 AM

    Will it be a double-deal? :D

I am just hoping for one or two more fullbacks joining the club!

  • 17 steve // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:18 AM

We could do with some good news this week – Don’t really know the player that well but from what everyone says on this blog and others he’s twice the player Sidwell is and is well worth 5 million.

However a word of caution – The Daily Mirror seems to visit this blog and then link us with players who we’re asking for! hope I’m wrong tho and we announce signing today

  • 18 Fernando // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:18 AM

    how good is he?

  • 19 tapir // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:19 AM

go away fernando…feed ur black sheep

  • 20 Spyro // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:19 AM

EVERYONE: ignore Fernando, he is a Spurs fan

  • 21 Chris F // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Danny, he bought plenty during his first stint.

    Paul Kitson anyone? :)

as for the Inler news, i’d be wary as it’s in the Daily mirror, so don’t get your hopes up too much.

Personally, i hope it’s true all the same.

  • 22 Patrick // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:21 AM

    *silent*

    let’s talk about transfers!

… again, maybe it is going to surprise us based on our “Jonas’ Miracle.”

Heading to my bed, and hope for some good news after waking up!

  • 23 51times // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:23 AM

Would be a great signing, hopefully the papers are right this time.

  • 24 Hadji // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Inler is such a cold blooded player, the way he was playing on Euro 2008 you’dd think that he won 2 world cups allready.
That is exactly what we need, someone who is not affraid to hold the ball in his feet.

  • 25 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:24 AM

    Dosnt Toonking work in Schweiz?

  • 26 Danny // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:25 AM

Chris F, thats not what i wanted to hear :P
I see we’re linked with Dawson again aswell, he’s a decent player, or atleast he was before he went to Spurs…Offloading 16 players, 1 month before transfer deadline, good luck, or not…

  • 27 Chennai Toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:25 AM

    hope we sign him today………….

  • 28 toon-munch // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:27 AM

Steven taylor interview on setanta saying keegan is not in newcastle today and “maybe he will come back with some new signings”

Heres hoping larrson , inler and evans would b nice

  • 29 9 Shearer // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:27 AM

It would b a good signing i would like him. I like him i know its 7 weeks 2 go but Spurs ve made so mony signings and now am getting scared i neva want those guys 2 finish ahead of us ever again we are competing for the same place remember But I trust KK.

  • 30 Nick // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:28 AM

im not sure what role hes gonna have. attacking midfield or holding? his positon various in each story about him in the papers.

  • 31 Jim // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Newcastle seem to behaving very cannily in the transfer market this season with a ‘steal’ here and a £5m clause there. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about these signings to get excited.

Does anyone remember the January optimism regarding transfers?
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2008/01/18/sfnnew118.xml

  • 32 Ericles // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:32 AM

Hope Inler is bringing Derdiyok with him too.
A good signing for NUFC. Let us wait and see. KK knows what he is doing.

  • 33 NUFCAl // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Haha, I’m sure Ed’s done that Udinese Spain thing before – he’s blatantly on a wind-up this time! Cheeky!

Let’s not get too excited now, this is the Daily Mirror and I haven’t seen anything anywhere else that would indicate we’re on the verge of signing him but I still hope to God that it’s true.

Anyone doubting whether he’d be any good, don’t bother, bloke’s absolutely class and I can’t believe what a steal he’d be at 5mil.

Seems too good to be true somehow that other clubs’ ears won’t prick up at such a low price though. If we are trying to sign him I don’t like that it’s all over the papers as I’d rather be surprised and not risk losing out on his signature just for the benefit of foresight.

  • 34 Davies // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Most of us agree that he would be a good signing, but we all know what the Mirror is like.

Does anyone think that Seb Larsson’s agent is using our good name to up his value by any chance?

Or do we think that we might actually land him as well?

Has anybody heard anymore about Derdiyok?

  • 35 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:34 AM

    9 Shearer…

Why would you be scared of Spurs?… Allot of clubs will be making good signings and where they finish will be up to those signings combining with the current players, their managers success and so on… Everton have used nearly no money at all, yet they are always lurking around the top 4 and that should teach us all a lesson… I truly hope Spurs use 50 million more, it will make it that much sweeter when clubs such as ourselves and Everton finish above them by only using a friction of that.

  • 36 Anders // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:35 AM

    inler is a holding midfielder

  • 37 Kash2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:35 AM

@Hadji – I felt he was quite a force in mdifield. He looked the only decent player for the Swiss, who were very very poor. He outshone that Barnetta!

  • 38 Kash2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Spurs will be running out of money. They’ve agreed a deal for Luis Garcia of Espanyol for £12m! Thats why there’s rumours of them selling players.

If Robbie Keane becomes available I would take him!

  • 39 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:38 AM

The official site links the Inler rumour themselves on their rumour page… But when i think back, i cant remember them ever Linking us to a player we got?

  • 40 Spyro // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:39 AM

looked the only decent player for the swiss?…Behrami? Gelson Fernandes?

  • 41 Toon! // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:41 AM

We are aiming for the top six,” Taylor told Setanta Sports News. “We have got our sights aimed high.

“The gaffer is away today, but hopefully he will come back with a few new signings. We do need them as we are a small squad, but we are all together.”

  • 42 Chennai Toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:43 AM

guys….wat happened to diego of bremen…………….no clubs are interested in him?

  • 43 Benji1892 // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:44 AM

just looked through some of the swiss newspapers and sport/football websites and couldn’t find an article on inlers proposed transfer to the toon …
anyway, hope the story is true as he is a brilliant player and would be the ideal replacement for nicky butt. Although he does get forward quite a bit he’s more of holding midfielder than an attacking midfielder.

PS. Haven’t read anything about Derdiyoks transfer either since it was reported that the valuation of the player between basel and newcastle seems to be about £ 3mio apart.

  • 44 Kash2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:45 AM

@Spyro: Inler was the only one I really noticed. I remember him playing soem good passes, thats why he stood out!

  • 45 NUFCAl // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:46 AM

We wouldn’t have a hope in hell of getting Diego, some people need to get a grip on reality.

  • 46 Beattie // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:46 AM

NUFCAL, did you not hear? they moved Udinese to spain a few months back

  • 47 Sav // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:47 AM

KK could be at his nephew’s funeral if there’s not an autopsy. Sad for the family.

Great to see the policy of signing young players being stuck by. Aimar no great loss. Seb Larsson might do well to declare for Newcastle rather than have his agent fishing for offers from Blackburn and Wigan. Howay, man! Join the revolution.
Strikes me this is make-or-break season for Duffer. If he can get a good pre-season in I prtedict he’ll be a good performer for us. His career is at a turning point after stagnant years at Chelski and a stuttering start at the Toon. Trappatoni will want him starting for his club, so if he’s staying, he needs to put down a strong claim from the off.

  • 48 dougnufc // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:49 AM

Come on KK! We are only 5mil away from Inler!

  • 49 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:51 AM

NUFCAl… Weirder things happen in the world than Newcastle getting a top player mate… Like say… West Ham getting Macherano and Tevez for instance?

  • 50 Hadji // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:52 AM

I felt that too mate,my coment on him was just a compliment of how good he really is.

  • 53 Derdi4Toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:54 AM

well if he’s DM and indeed signs then we may need at least one AM joining with Emre to go? and Geremi can go too (for 1.5 or 2 mil say) to make way for the AM? if Barton out soon then we may just have too many defensive minded midfielder yet flair, skill, creativity and excitement sorely missing. that just reminds me of Dalglish’s (dark) era of dull football – a squad of midfield soldiers, disciplined and moving but create nothing. painful to watch (and Inler looks a bit like Ketsbaia with a little hair on doesnt he?)

  • 54 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Chennai Toon… Diego has stated that his teammates isnt good enough for his passing, so he could be on his way out, but altho you can never be sure, it would be a VERY hard move to pull off. You gotta remember that he is playing for a title challenging team in Germany that has champs league on the menu… One day my friend, we will have good chances with that kind of player, but these days our chances are slim.

  • 55 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:57 AM

BennAllen… It might be, whatever the case, its getting confusing :)

  • 58 valle // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Ed… These fans like fernando that clearly comes here to stir things up should surely be banned mate, otherwise your new rule will lose weight behind the words soon… He said enough yesterday to break your rules 10 times at least… The alternative is that they will make hundreds of false names on here and soon we wont know who’s who.

Man United never signed podolski, I believe you were refering to Karel Poborski, Luca Podolski is infact a German Centre forward and 10 years younger.

    Im a stickler for details

By the way, this kid is good Udinese the spanish serie A team have been vastly improved since he joined. I ve seen Inler play twice in Italy this season when I have been in rome. He is a calm influence, does not panic, and has a great eye for a pass. THE NEW BOBBY LEE

  • 79 Obafemi Martins // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Don’t really know much about the lad, but just reading on Wikipedia – he has only played for one season at any of his senior clubs before moving on.

He was supposed to sign for Fenerbahce in the 2004-05 season but wasn’t deemed good enough, and apparently he’s only been in the Udinese side because of injuries to their regular midfielders Obodo and Pinzi (never heard of them either).

As I say, I’m only basing this on what I’ve read on Wikipedia, never seen him play other than the one Swiss game I saw at the Euros, and don’t play FM. I don’t think any of these sources of info are that useful really, but if we do sign him I’ll trust the scouts and the manager that he’s good enough for us.

Hope he doesn’t leave in a year’s time again though!

EDIT: Just read Terrencio’s comments. Hope he is as good as you say mate, and more to the point I hope we sign him!

  • 80 Ben_BKK // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:56 AM

also, I’m pretty sure it’s fernando, and not Fernando that’s a Spurs fan, cause the capital F one seems to post real comments, whereas the lower f one posts crap about Spurs being good, which we know that no one apart from an actual Spurs fan would say.

  • 81 WIGAZ // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Just popped in quickly to have a look, relly hope we sign Inler 2day that will be class! cant belive diego said that bout his teamm8s! OMG! mind you are michael owen & Oba martins good enough for your passes son? i would say so! diego would be best buy of the summer if by some crazy way we pulled it off! I always have faith in KK to suprise all the daft southern press by pulling off shock deals! would love to see Inler & Evans over next few days then hopefully LB & CF to follow! Bent perhaps?

  • 83 WIGAZ // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Anybody else see Zeint turned down a £19m bid for Arshavin form a unamed English club! wonder if that was us? His big fat wobbly breast of an agent says “Zeint Value Andrei at the £24m mark, any clubs looking to buy him will have to get closer to that mark”.

  • 84 bailey // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:12 PM

There does not seem to be any record of NUFC actually bidding for Sidwell or Digard so why say we missed out on them?? We may have made enquiries but so what.
Also would love to know just who was on those alleged lists of Keegan and Wise that we heard so much about earlier.

  • 85 michael // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I hope we do sign this player , we need more signings because the squad is really thin, sign seb larsson , van der vaart , lennon , gomis and a few others ,but sell the likes of geremi , viduka , cacapa, sack barton, get new contracts for the likes of martins , owen , butt , beye.

  • 86 ObaFan2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Can an e-mail verification system not be added, where you have to confirm via e-mail before posting?

As mentioned last night there are some here who seem to have multi-personalities with many nicks as well as people impersonating others.

  • 87 ObaFan2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:39 PM

£24 million is way over the top for him, Barca’s £12 million is about right i think.

  • 88 Obafan // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:43 PM

I still think Arshavin can become a new NUFC player. As long as he is not announced at another team we might get the chance. £24m is too high, but I think all prices in football world are too high (wages, transfer money, …).

And like I mentionned at another article (Arshavin coming soon to England) the words that he does not want to play for clubs like Newcastle, Villa, etc are not made by the player himself. It is the agent who wants to get as much money as possible, cause his player has become “hot” after the Euro’s.

No disrespect obafan but wake up and smell the coffee!! ashley will not spend that sort of money on a player who yes had a good few games at the euros ! and was only valued a couple of month ago at 6 – 8 million!

A message for these people coming to this site on fishing trips – get a grip, little girls.

And about Digard and Sidwell, we didn’t miss out if we were never in for them.

I think Inler would be a good signing, but surely we need to be looking at some decent defenders. Any news about Cuellar?

  • 92 C.Cort // Jul 10, 2008 at 1:58 PM

    Not again, Ed.

What happened to the iminent signing?

  • 93 Benji1892 // Jul 10, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Valle – yeah, i live in switzerland …
I really do hope we wrap up the signings of inler and larsson soon, so we can sign some more players that could improve and enlarge our very small looking squad.

defenders: cuellar?, wilson? (rb at celtic), Coloccini?, Servet Cetin?, Boulahrouz?, evans?

an attacking midfielder: (McGeady?, Emana?, ledley?, Bullard?, källstrom, barnetta?

and another striker: Cameron Jerome?, Derdiyok?, Gomez?

it was also nice to hear mike ashley rejecting the talk of him willing to sell the club and saying that he’s only looking for some investors, as long as they don’t live in caves in afghanistan …

Ps. Just still wanted to say what a brillant work i think Ed is doing by posting all these articles all day long. I really enjoy your blog! Keep up the good work!

    anyway, howay the toon!

  • 94 scott9 // Jul 10, 2008 at 2:46 PM

the daily mirror said the deal is close oooo this must be true then if the mirror is reporting it

  • 95 Benji1892 // Jul 10, 2008 at 2:55 PM

    Valle – Yeah i live in switzerland ( nice place ;-) )

I really do hope we sign up inler and larsson soon, so that kev and wisey can concentrate on adding a couple more players to our very small looking squad … (Collocini, Cuellar,Boulahrouz, Evans, Servet Cetin, Bullard, Barnetta, Cameron Jerome, Derdiyok, Gomez – any of them would be great)

Just still wanted to say what a fantastic job i think Ed is doing by making this blog work! I really enjoy reading the articles and discussions. Keep up the good work!

    Howay the toon!

Just because somee english media said that Arshavin was available for 8M P doesn´t meen that was the case… Get a grip! Zenit doesn´t think 8M is a good price for him, then se him doing well for 2 games, and rejects 19M!

Just understand sometime that just because media says one thing, like we van get Inler for 5M, arshavin for 8, Seb for 4,5, Digard, sidwell, Gomis, Gomez, Diego, dawson, CHimbonda, Lennon, Derdiyok, Barzagli, Aimar or who ells we have been linked with, it doesn´t meen KK is doing all he can to get them, and Ashley didn´t want to splash the cash!

People still sitting here writing that me have missed out on Arshavin and Turan because we didn´t want to spend the money back then, it probly was that 1, we didn´t want them, just paper talk 2, the club didn´t want to sell, 3, the player didn´t want to come, even if the papers say that, or 4 that the club wanted much more than the papers said…

Wasn´t Arshavin suposed to be anonced today the paper said 2 days back, and that he already had done the medical?

We were suposed to anonce a signing today…

Just understand that 99%, if not more that the english paper says it rubish, and has no truth what so ever…

People always state they know that, and then go on and say we could have got Arshavin for 8M 6 mounth ago, if we just wanted… Yhea, sure, because the papers always knows what happens behind the sceens in every football club…

  • 99 dcbashore // Jul 11, 2008 at 12:43 AM

The 19m for Arshavin was from Arsenal, so saith the Star. And I’m getting tired of talking about a player we haven’t a chance in hell of getting, for that matter. We need improvement in too many areas to be shelling out 24m quid on one player anyway.

  • 100 dan // Jul 11, 2008 at 1:36 AM

I can understand why people think just because he had a good euros we shouldn’t sign him….
to be called one of the best foreign players in the Italian league is one heck of a CV. Remember he is still only 22 or something! Should definatly sign him. He is decent in the air for under 6ft and his distrubution is better than Butt. I think he would be an absolute bargain for £5M , especially considering his age.

  • 101 ToonLoon // Jul 11, 2008 at 2:09 AM

The Mail Online is reporting the possiblility of a Jermaine Pennant move to the Toon. I live in Sydney OZ, more than a little out of touch–is this paper reputable, or are they clowns?
