Steven Taylor has been a busy guy today, and after having given an interview with the Evening Chronicle, he has also talked to Sky Sports News today.

Steven Taylor - wants Owen and Harper on new contracts soon

Steven told Sky Sports News:

“There is nothing worse playing last season and the season before worrying about my future and for that to be all over now is great for me,” “People who know me know I wouldn’t leave this club and the best thing that has happened is actually signing.”

“I know there are a few other players now waiting for their contracts to be sorted and it is important that important players like Michael Owen and Steve Harper get theirs sorted out because we have a small squad.”  “Our squad is small, but there is plenty of quality there.”

“I would rather have a smaller squad with quality rather than a large squad with not so much quality so at the moment we will take what we have.”

We don’t expect either Owen or Harper to be leaving anytime soon, and we’re sure the club is working right now with both Michael, Steven and their agents on sorting out good deals for both players.

They both proved under Keegan, at the end of last season, they can both be important players for Newcastle in the coming second revolution under Kevin.

Comments welcome.

    cmon owen sign!!

  • 2 domtoon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:09

Ed you’re on fire with the articles this afternoon. I’ve barely eaten my sandwich and 3 stories have come out in quick succession!

Hope it’s followed by a signing in the next few hours…(and not Owen or Harper!! Although that would be welcomed news as well).

  • 3 indian toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:09

as owen , given and beye all hav featured modelling the new kit , that is a clear indication that they are not leaving newcastle united.! it’s as simple as that! :)

I think there might be a problem with Owens contract. How Ashley is trying to run the club, he is trying to get the players off the really big wages. Owen is one of the biggest earners in the league. So it might be a stumbling block. But hope they both sign. We will see!

  • 5 Soren // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:14

Owen and Harper are very important in the squad. The quicker we get them signed up the better.

  • 6 Leo // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:14

what about martins, does he not have a mere 2 years on his contract???

  • 7 Soren // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:17

Leo - Didn’t Martins sign a 5 year deal? If so he still has 3 years left. But that buyout clause is still there? Would be nice to get that clause out of the way.

    Taylor talks A LOT !!

  • 9 indian toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:24

lol :) ! but we do need a talkative centre back , dont we! :)

  • 10 ObaFan2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:25

Oba needs to stay too, only player I seen last couple of years that could take a defence apart single handedly.

  • 11 Davies // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:26

Modelling the kit is not a guarantee that a player will be staying. I’ve seen Drogba modelling Chelsea’s new training strip and he’s dying to get out.

  • 12 indian toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:28

@ davies : but there are rarely rumours about him leaving stamford bridge, it would have been big news if he had been on offer . like frank lamds scenario!

  • 13 Matthew // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:29

Taylor should be the last person giving out contract advice after the way he tried to conduct his through the evening Chronicle.

  • 14 indian toon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:30

it wasnt him but his dad who is also his agent ironically!

  • 15 ObaFan2 // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:34

Taylor got a proper agent and oh look he got a new contract :)

  • 16 LondonToon // Jul 10, 2008 at 13:53

The most important signing this summer is Owen. Obviously we need a few signings, but if the club let him go, the only way is down.

  • 17 Fernando // Jul 10, 2008 at 14:03

I dont rate owen at all. Ever since his injury he has lost a yard of pace and isnt as sharp as when he was at liverpool. He certainly doesnt deserve the wages he is on. When you look at Keane(60k) and adebayor(35k) i think newcastle are being ripped off bearing in mind those 2 are better players.

When I was reading his comments, I started to count how many first teamers (youth players not included, cause we don’t know if they are ready to take the big step) we have got. WE DEFO NEED NEW PLAYERS (and not only youngsters). Even the players are aware of that. I think we need at least 2 good players in every position. Here I go (I do not count the youngsters in, cause i don’t know their level, tho’ I’ve already read good comments on some of them, esp Kadar):

GK: Given / Harper / Forster (OK)

RB: Beye / ?? (defo need backup, cause I don’t think Geremi will be used as RB)
CD: Faye / Cacapa / Taylor / Edgar (defo need 1 quality CB)
LB: Enrique / ?? (backup or starter pls?)

RW: Geremi / Milner / Gutierrez
    CDM: Butt / ??? (defo 1 needed)
CAM: Barton??? / Emre (is it already definate that he is gone???). Here we defo need a quality player, someone who can open defences with 1 pass
LW: Duff / N’Zogbia (even Gutierrez or Milner)

ST: Owen / Martins / Viduka (injury prone) / Smith (so useless that they tried him in midfield and attack, but neither worked out, get rid of) / Ameobi (will go) / Carroll (not sure about him)

That leaves (if no-one leaves) the following:
    1 RB: ?
1 or 2 CD: Collocini or/and Cuellar will do for me
    1 LB: Shorey
    1 CDM: Inler
    1 CAM: VDV or Aimar
1 ST: Derdyok or Gomis (still am convinced he can do a good job for us)
    1 extra player: Arshavin

I know we won’t get all of these, but let’s hoipe some of these positions will be filled ASAP.

And I didn’t count on who might still leave (Duff, Barton, Emre, Smith, …). I still have confidence in a good transfer policy this summer, but I prefer the incoming players at the club ASAP, cause it is necessary that they have got the time to gel!!!!

“as owen , given and beye all hav featured modelling the new kit , that is a clear indication that they are not leaving newcastle united.! it’s as simple as that!”

Wrong, henry modelled in the new Arsenal kit before going to Barca

  • 20 LondonToon // Jul 10, 2008 at 14:13

There’s absolutely no chance of us getting Van der Vaart, he turned down Spurs cos they weren’t big enough, and it looks like Real Madrid are signing him anyway.

Same goes for Arshavin. He’ll be off to Barcelona probably, if not then Chelsea or Arsenal.

We need to get good, solid players, such as Inler, have a good depth of squad so we can try and get in the top 8, possibly top 6.

That will give us the opportunity to attract higher level players next summer.

Newcastle is in a state of rehabilitation, and has been ever since Fat Freddy decided in his wisdom to sack Sir Bobby.

  • 21 Obafan // Jul 10, 2008 at 14:17

@ London Toon: I still hope that 1 big fish get caught. I know it’s like a sweet dream, but as long as the Fat Lady doesn’t sing …. there is a possibility. ;-)

  • 22 LondonToon // Jul 10, 2008 at 14:27

Lol well it’s good to be optimistic! We might still be surprised by someone unexpectedly good, but just saying don’t get your hopes up for Arshavin and VDV.

  • 23 Fernando // Jul 10, 2008 at 15:15

the closest you will get to signing a big fish is John Scales. Fish- scales. clever eh/.

  • 24 bailey // Jul 10, 2008 at 15:58

Said last week when this excuse for a Conference (yes I meant Conference) footballer signed his contract that we would once again be subjected to his daily rent a quote . And so it is every sodden day he spouts off because reporters think we are interested in what he says. More likely to be only one prepared to talk to them (except Harper of course). Thinks he is some kind of leader: he couldnt lead my gran to the shops.

HEY WELCOME BACK FERNANDO!!!!!! I think your hilarious mate keep up the comedy.

    TOON 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!

  • 26 Geno toon // Jul 11, 2008 at 4:43

There is still plenty of time. Although it is nerve recking I don’t think ashley will want to buy a team invest and then have it go down. Not how winners think.

  • 27 Sav // Jul 11, 2008 at 11:12

Bailey, are you gonna come on every thread and bang on with your gripe about Taylor?
He’s young, he’s not injury-prone, he’s captained England U-21s, he’s played a couple of positions for NUFc and he was the only nailed-on stsrter in defence for long spells last season.
What’s your problem - did he run over your cat?

  • 28 AndyT // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:05

Fernando, When you have to explain your joke and then state that its clever, no matter what you think of your audience, it makes you look stupid. But look on the bright side, that’s something you seem adept at anyway.

  • 29 Ian // Jul 11, 2008 at 17:57

AndyT , however he doesnt just go on to make a comment about something that someone else said, give it a rest and add your own comments about the subject, not other people, it is good banter on here and most people are very tolerent of other people’s views even when they are complete opposites, dont spoil it by trying to provoke people.
