News today that Newcastle will now kick off the new season in front of the Sky TV cameras, when they play Manchester United in their first game.

Newcastle’s visit to Old Trafford to take on the giant Manchester club, has now been switched to Sunday, August 17, for a 4 pm KO, and it will be televised live by Sky Sports.
And the October 25th local derby game against Sunderland, at the Stadium of Light, will also be shown, with the KO time being brought forward to 12.45 pm.
That should be another excellent game, full of the usual passion of the famous local North East derby.
Sky Sports managing director said:
“The Sunderland-Newcastle game in October is one of eight big derbies live on Sky in the first four months of the season.”
“And we know it will not disappoint a nationwide audience.”
“It’s great also to feature Newcastle at Old Trafford on the first weekend.”
“We think this is our strongest start to a season in 17 years of Premier League coverage.”
It’s really good news for Newcastle fans, because it should be a great game (this time) and gives us all a chance to see the first upset of the season - live on TV.
Comments welcome.

i look forward to our first game, even though a defeat is on the cards unless we sign more players , oh and the official site has just confirmed the guthrie signing pretty much
3 Andrew Whitaker // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:32
Oh no! Not the TV camera’s when we are play man utd again… Hopefully this will be the day that we surprise the critics and cause mass celebrations across tyneside!
4 Faustino // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:34
Carl we could sign Real Madrid and still struggle against Man U first game - still no reason not have a little more faith!
As a wise man once said, given you HAVE to play Man U twice a year, one of the games might as well be the first one of the season.
5 Kash2 // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:37
“League Champions, youre having a laugh”
Is what i’ll be singing after we play them off the park!
HAVE IT!

agree faustino, and im a very optimistic person, but, like i said, we really, really need a descent couple of midfielders , yes the guthrie signing may be a good move , a good addition to our squad and good for the future but butt, geremi, smith? as our cm at mo is scary.in my opinion anyway
7 cooldj // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:39
and i’m in fcking italy on that weekend. big woop!!!
. anyone know if there’ll be italian pubs showing english football?? come to think of it do they even have pubs in italy!!?
8 Faustino // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:45
Carl - All true mate
But as I say its going to take faith and a whole lot of luck in the main to win this game! Regardless of who we get.
9 Black and White Blood // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:47
I’ve got a feeling the clubs going to present at least 5 new signings on Monday… No idea why, I just do! Things appear to be too quiet in my opinion, and with KK refusing to speak about any football related matters until next week just does not add up.
What ever happens, new signings or not, I’ll back KK and have full trust in what he does - I remember only too well the steps incident [Andy Cole]… Who was proven right! KK - everything he does is for the love of this club, therefore rather then criticising all of the clubs actions let us begin to support the decisions which are being taken, we’re on the right steps, if the fans of Everton and Pompy can be patience why cant we..?..

it would be nice to get, sebastion larsson, ilner, skjelbred on the books aswell

No home games on Sky this year then? Just hope we get a few on Setanta. Is Sky hoping we lose our away games or is it the way the cookie crumbles.?

Nice way to start the season, a trip to Old Trafford and 3 points…….lovely!

More money i suppose for the club for starters and lets hope with give them a good game this time.

Doesnt look like it, 4 away games on the bounce on sky sports.
15 DC Magpie // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:19
carl unfortunately I feel that being linked with a player all but guarantees they will not be signing, shame but it appears to be the way.
BTW reading some of L’pool supporter’s comments on Guthrie and they are all very positive. Many comparisons to a young Gerrard.
Appears Rafa is even more skint than KK.
16 DC Magpie // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:20
Don’t matter to me as I live in the states and we get every single premiership game televised.
Love it!
17 Spyro // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:21
guthrie eh, not a bad signing for around 2 million, decent player, young, hard working and he adds depth to our CM area. I am quite happy about this signing

How can you have a billionaire who cashed that sum when he sold half his company being broke? He’s just tight and now everyone is beginning to realize what I have been saying all along. He will sell asap. We are shopping ine the bargain basement and the sooner he goes the better. We’ve gone from Modric (a smoke screen all along to keep the fans onside) to Guthrie. That sums the guy up. Even Bolton are buying £10M players. The club is losing credibilty. At least we get to keep Smith and Duff and barton. Quality. Anybody think we might have a really bad season?
28 Fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:36
shame there is no spurs newcastle fixture on sky. I will just have to hope you can get through the early rounds of the cups as it might be shown. Heres dreaming.

Hate Prawn
I was joking about Smith and Duff. You don’t get my sarcasm.
Zog wants to go. We might sell Milner. Viduka is constantly injured. We have the smallest squad in Prem. We are signing reserve players. The whole place is falling apart. Mark my words that the next person out the door will be the King. He has been deceived. King stays. Ashley out. But there will be some who still see Ashley as a saviour. They must be his dad.
36 Spyro // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:47
it is clear to me that many of the users of this site are much younger than i initially thought, looking at some of the insults thrown at each other from the recent articles clearly shows this.
Fernando unfortunately i dont make friends over the internet.
To everyone else, if a rival fan is annoying you then ignore the person, why is this so hard?
37 DC Magpie // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:51
Give Ashley a chance he sounds pretty honest to me. He is looking to investors to help Newcastle’s chances of competing.
Most of the clubs investing large sums of money have a conglomerate ownership.
Nothing wrong with being shrewd in the transfer market, I’m pretty confident we will SPLASH THE CASH on at least one big signing.
Patience is a virtue.
38 tam toon // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:51
Cooldj -Todi in Umbria I have been to. It is a mediaeval hill town, locals are friendly and it has a few bars. Not the same as our pubs they are like cafe’s usually with a tv. There might be a sports bar if you are lucky. I seem to remember a cafe BIG that had a tv in -no not a tranny!
I went in I think 1996 and 2002. I went to a place in Tavernelle Umbria a supermarket. I had a Shearer toon top on , the guy that owned the shop loved shearer. The next time I went to the shop his family invited me and the wife to watch us live v West Ham 0-0 big les done all but score. We finished 2nd again-dalglish. So they are very friendly round there- no knife wielding plebs. Most places have satellite for football worldwide, even the homes. So you should get to see it ok. Its a lovely place Todi.

Looks like we are buying for the future….in division 2.!
If Ashley does not invest in quality 1st team players and we get relegated, his investment will be worth less than he payed for it.
Just look around.
Even Portsmouth’s squad look good, Spurs are looking good, even Villa are getting stronger.
shame, but it looks like we are falling further behind.
If there is no investment forthcoming and we get injuries, we might find the groundsman in defence, and the pie-seller on the wing !
41 daiv // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:55
Dc Magpie
He is totally dishonest. He denied trying to sell the club until the facts were overwhelming and now states he only wanted to sell part of it. I suppose you think this £420M figure was made up by the press? He wants out but cannot say so publically. How would it go down if he said I am trying to sell for a decent price? he would not get in the ground.
42 daiv // Jul 11, 2008 at 16:59
Ashley promised the earth (challenge Manure etc) when he bought the club. How big a disappointment is he now? He told KKoff when the King said we would never challenge the top 4 because the King knew by then there was no money and we would be buyingy cheap players and reserve players. Ashley should do the honourable thing and sell asap. Take a loss but please go.
43 cooldj // Jul 11, 2008 at 17:01
@ Tam toon
thanks a lot-sounds great and i liked your story
i’ll look out for the cafes/bars-hopefully one will have the game on! but if not it’s not a massive loss considering what the likely result will be!! still we can live in hope
cheers
44 dontoon // Jul 11, 2008 at 17:02
I have to say I do think KK was told that he would have a significant amount to spend, that would of helped him to decide to come back and now its a case of does he?. I think we only need 30 mill but i doubt that we have anywhere near that amount. we were lucky that the argentinan bought out his own contract so we didnt have to fork out too much. Otherwise can you see us paying 12mill for him?

48 Hadji // Jul 11, 2008 at 17:35
Cooldj….Just go to the bookies there,i’m sure they have Sky Sports but on Italian.
You see, here in Macedonia we dont have thing like pay per view or something similar. For premier league we have a chanel and it broadcastst 4 games every weekend
1 chanel with 3 games from the Spanish
1 chanel with German conference, meaning all the games at the same time so whenever the goal is scored they move to that game, same goes with the calcio.
My girlfriend from Newcastle is amazed with the choices of football games which are showed for free.
Once again Cooldj, check the Sports bar first and if not, just go to the nearest sport betting place.

Hope this one posts, my last 2 havent got through……….
Anyway, My comment was, Danny Guthrie?? I dont know a great deal about him except the fact that he is not good enough for Liverpool!! He was in and out of the BOLTON side last season , scoring one goal!
A signing ?YES, a good signing? Time will tell! The type of signing we were expecting when Mike Ashley took over? NO!! Good enough to get us up the table I VERY MUCH DOUBT IT!!!
Gutted to be honest at all that is going on at the club, and as I have mentioned before (And been shouted down) MA has done nothing to prove he is in this for the long term and has the clubs best intentions at heart!!
I said 2 months ago that the MODRIC bid was just talk!! Now people on here are beginning to agree with me!!
Currently, It does not bode well for next season!!
Why do I think this?
On current signings I reckon We will not sign anyone better than waht we already have and IMO we havent done so yet.
Is guttierez a ‘premiership quality player’ maybe…maybe not…but if he is NOT????
We were outclassed by EVERTON away, and WEST HAM away!!
PREDICTION: SAME PLAYERS NEXT SEASON, SAME RESULTS!!!
Personally, not keen on ashley and his appointments so far have been dubious….Wise?? A Casino boss?? A bloke who ran a race course up here from London?? A property Magnate?
I have seen nothing from the Board of Directors to inspuire me for next season and the following three years, maybe then will the children come to fruition, but again MAYBE NOT!!!
52 Angryman the Angry fAN // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:12

57 9 Shearer // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:03
Guys relax here. we are not getting our things done but I remembered the Sir Bobby days and remebered that we didnt really have quality but the results came. O’Brien, Elliot, Bernard,Darbizaz,………. that wasnt quality but the results came and we made Europe and teams were scared of us. Arsenal team last season no one thought they would b there but they made it now we all praise them. KK will do it young kids hungry for victory
58 Hadji // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:20
9 Shearer….Nobody thought for Arsenal cause Henry left them but they still had Fabregas,Hleb,Ade,etc.
And for the players we’ve signed in the past like the one you mentioned would never ever cope with the modern football today and plus the EPL then was way behind Calcio,Primera,Bundes
59 Graham // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:26
This is the best possiblr time to be playing Man Utd. We may not win, we may not even draw, but by hell with KK at the top we’ll give them a battle!
60 the voice of reason // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:54
unbelievable…you lot are unbelievable….Lets look at what is actually happenning….We have and are getting rid of no hopers and are bringing in quality yougsters on long contracts. This is good business and represents a definite change from bringing in players past their prime. the one thing we are not going to be short of is pace next season except perhaps at the back. Lets look at business so far. Taylor contract extended, given not going any where, lightening fast spiderman winger, Liverpool trained and england youth player Guthrie, nto yet confirmed I believe but all gone very quiet on Spear. Lua Lua looked good at the end of the season. I am really not sure what you lot want…do you just want a few expensive players for one seasons glory or do you want to become the new man u and be at the top for a while…I know which i would prefer…stop moaning!
