We wouldn’t be surprised if Danny Guthrie becomes Newcastle’s second transfer of the season.

Danny Guthrie - soon to be Keegan’s second signing
The Newcastle official site is reporting the young Liverpool midfielder will be undergoing a medical, and if that goes well, we expect the youngster to sign on the dotted line, and become a Newcastle player.
The initial reaction of readers on our site seems to be one of slight disappointment at the news, but we think Danny will be a good signing, and he’s really one for the future.
He’s also English, in case FIFA President Sepp Blatter is successful in getting his 6 plus 5 scheme approved, where we’d need to start 6 English players, and be limited to fielding only 5 foreigners in any game.
The news being reported on several news sources this afternoon is that Danny is on Tynesdie right now, undergoing his medical with Newcastle United, and that wouldn’t surprise us.
Maybe the signing will be formally announced tomorrow, and we would be fine with the deal.
Guthrie will certainly not have any lack of confidence playing for Kevin Keegan, and he must be looking forward to playing for the ever positive manager, who can be such an inspiration to any youngster pulling on the famous black and white shirt of Newcastle.
We read some of Kevin’s comments he made last season, and we were even looking for our boots.Â
As we indicated earlier today, we don’t think Danny is expected to walk straight into the first team, but here’s yet another top young player, who will now end up on Tyneside.
We often wonder if Mike Ashley was a fan of the Busby Babes of the late 1950s, because we seem to be headed in that direction, don’t we?
Comments welcome.

wall virginty
.
hopefully we can get him tied up tonight though i think it will be announced tomorrow even if we do. not exactly gonna set the prem alight but he’s a decent squad player with the potential to be a first teamer and providing it’s around 2-2.5 mil then a good signing imo. lets have a few more of these cheap signings and then a couple of big ones if you’re willing to get your wallet out mike.
to suggest we’re gonna be playing football like the busby babes is perhaps a little optimistic ed
and when i say little i mean hugely
2 Patrick // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:08
I think he’s a good signing with this price.
…and before getting in Shearer, how much did we spend for building up the Entertainers?
3 natedawg // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:08
decent signing even as a back up, at the moment our squad is so thin we need 2 or 3 of these types of players maybe larrson being one of them and prob 5 or 6 slightly older more experienced players
4 Midjew // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:11
Sounds good to me.
For the price cant really go wrong as he is SO young, even if he dont make it into first team he will last a long time as a backup.
Great, lets ROLE on the new players more more MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good addition he may be better than we think. he could exceed expectations like Beye and Faye did.
10 Chris F // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:20
lol Leo, i’d be more worried that he’s 14 and doesn’t know what virginity is, frankly.
as for Guthrie, he’ll be a good squad player, and that’s what we need, because while he may not be the level of player we’d hoped to see, we’ll need 2 or 3 of these ‘low key’ signings just to fill out the subs bench, more than anything!
nah, but seriously, he looks a solid enough player, just have to wait and see how he develops.

This whole ‘if hes so good liverpool wouldnt let him go’ stuff is just bollocks to be honest. Youre basically saying that if youre not Gerrard, Mascherano or Alonso then youre a crap player. Alonsos being sold, does that make him bad? No, didnt think so. Give the lad a chance

29 dougnufc // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:39
Here is a quote from a Liverpool fan
“He’s very average, yet Lucas is something special?
Please…
Guthrie has a touch and can spot a pass, he can also influence a game. He knows how to give the ball to a player then get it back and show for the centre halves to pass to… Unlike Lucas who floats through games he can also throw in a tackle. The only thing that really lets Guthrie down is his physical attributes.
You’ll see next season anyway when he’s doing well for Newcastle and we have to watch Lucas trying to be Fabregas and offering absolutely all in every game he plays again. “
30 Tom_Toon // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:44
doug that said id much rather have Lucas.
However for £2mil in todays market it is a great signing.
31 furrygiblets // Jul 11, 2008 at 18:45
You people that are seriously thinking this is a bad or “average” signing need to get a clue. Have you seen how thin our squad is?
Also all this “if he was so good why would Liverpool let him go” is just utter balls. If Benitez actually knew how to win the premiership he wouldn’t be wanting to replace Alonso with Barry!

No more than a squad player - both Man U and Liverpool have let him go. The LIverpool Press Secretary is alos quoted as saying, .”I personally believe Newcastle should be looking at someone a bit better than Guthrie, with all due respect. At Bolton he was good, but not amazing and that was in a side that was nearly relagated.”
Whilst I hope it is sour grapes I really fear for next season if this is the calibre of players we will be relying upon - and lets face it with a squad of 13 he will be playing from the start,

I’d not think he’s a replacement of Nicky Butt… even in a long run. I think he is actually going to be the 2nd Rob Lee or something. Was Rob a star player? Till the day he left, no I never thought so; more importantly, he IS contributing to our success. Let’s forget what the Liverpool Secretary said with the sour grape.
Mind if I am thinking of the next David Batty is on the way? (He ain’t expensive but effective as well.)

Let’s see if his hunger and Keegan’s motivation can propel him into our first team.
Regards,
Neil
60 Patrick // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:23
Hadji, I would never think we missed anyone so far. Premier League is a good place that not all star players are gonna shine.
Take Shevchenko as an example. Can this former World player do anything for Chelski? No!! But he certainly did a lot of AC Milan.
Another example is Kluivert. Remember what he did for the other teams BUT us. He’s not suitable for PL and that’s all.
I can name many many players who got stuck in PL (can’t forget Guivarc’h forever).
It’s not so important if they are stars. It’s important if they can play well under KK. Money is only part of the problem in PL.

We have a small 1st team squad lacking quality up front, in the middle and at the back.
Why are we signing a player who wasn’t good enough for Bolton ?
Buying young will NOT keep us in the Premiershp next season.
By all means buy players for the future, but we need players for the here-and-now or we will fall further behind.
67 Angryman the Angry fAN // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:32
@51 times,
nobody is asking for trophy signings, just decent signings, proven signings, signings that can turn games in our favour!!
Is Danny Guthrie gonna do that??
We are a bigger club than the likes of spuds, everton, west ham, portsmouth…yet they are all making better signings than us IMO!!!!
Anyway, “Once again I ask, where did trophy signings and big names ever get us? ” second in the premiership matey…2 seasons in a row!!!!
Mr A.Shearer
Mr Les Ferdinand
Mr Centre Partin
Batty, Albert, Peacock, Ginola, Gillespie….need i go on
All very very expensive players that made us the most entertaining team in the league!!
Dont tell me these were’nt trophy siginings in the day!!!
i want these types of signings back, i want to be challenging……….there is no crime in that!!
Realistically we wont get them currently, but i am sure that there are better, more proven players out there that we SHOULD be able to afford!!!
68 Paul R // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:33
United boss Kevin Keegan told nufc.co.uk: “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve got Danny.
“He proved himself in the Premier League last season so we know he can play at that level.
“He’s at the right age and is a good signing for us.”
69 Alex // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:34
He is 21 and already has a season in the premiership behind him and comes cheap . Keegan must see something in him or he would not be on his way to us , all in all seems like he could be a good signing .Cant understand why there are so many people being so pessimistic about the lad lets give him a chance to shine .
70 The Entertainers // Jul 11, 2008 at 19:37
I personally think Guthrie is a very shrewd buy at 2million.
But i have to admit if we do not purchase some quality before the start of the season then i will be disappointed. Guthrie looks a great addition to the SQUAD. but we need quality in the FIRST TEAM now.
We had a very small squad last season and we’ve let go a number of players already with possibility of Shola going. This initially indicated to me we needed to buy at least half a dozen new players, with 3-4 for the first team. It may be Keegan has picked up these first two signings as they are good enough, but with the added bonus of not costing the earth.
The real signings may yet come as they often take longer to organise…heres hoping anyway!

Have been reading the Liverpool fans blog and to be honest half the fans are not to bothered one way or the other at his sale, due to the quality in their first team.
The other half are disappointed as they believe he could well turn out to be a 4 million pound player in a year or two. They also believe he is at least at the same level as there own Lucas.

Angryman the Angry fAN - I would love to have those type of players at NUFC but we cannot just spend as we have in the past - that is why we have run up debts of £100m+ which Ashley has had to clear
Spurs and the like are not necesseraly better than us, but they dont have our past mistakes, our past debts. We have made continuous mistakes over the past 15 years which have cost us dearly.
I dream of the Modrics, the Turans and Arshavins etc. but we are nowhere near those at the minute. We are amongst the Boltons and Middlesbroughs - like it or not. Yes we have big crowds but big crowds dont always bring in trophys.
We need to build our squad to be able to compete in the top half of the prem league before we go and have an all out assault on the top 4
Success will come, but it wont come overnight this time - Keegan wont have us finishing 3rd in his 1st full season
Ambition is fine, but keep with reality at the same time

I’ve just read 5 pages on a LFC Forum on Guthrie. I’d say about 90% of the fans thought he’d be a future star. That was before we were linked to him.
Now that he’s signed for us I reckon there’ll be a lot of disappointed Liverpool fans. It’s obvious Rafa is having to make up the funds for the Barry deal, so we’ve forced his arm.
I hope he makes a future England player. If not he’ll at least be a decent squad player.

I am also frustrated by those who say if he wasn’t good enough for Liverpool he isn’t a good buy. Liverpool have to sell to buy this summer, just like every club save Spuds and Citeh.
I’m also a firm believer that the best bench players are the up and comers, not established veterans who expect to play week in and week out.

All i have been hearing from people on this site is how kk will bring the good times back. Trust in kk and ma. Now he has made a signing you all jump on his back. You are never going to attract the star names so all you can do is try and spot them while they are young. Its the people like tom toon who have been getting fans hopes up by naming players like arshavin, arda, inler and vdv . I am not having a dig but you all need to realise your place in the premiership. All fans think there team is bigger than it is and should be playing in europe so you are not alone. We have signed a reserve footballer for i say about 3 million
could be worse we could have Alan Smith
Oh wait we got him tooo

Newcastle are moving places that for sure

But before you go getting a big head Nando, your beloved spurs only finished a couple of points ahead of us last season and I reckon that a couple of quid on Ramos to be 1st manager sacked wouldn’t be to risky IMO!
Great players dont always make great teams….. we should know, weve had plenty!

Simon P you are looking VERY narrowly at last season. Let’s see, Allardyce was terrible for our team, players unmotivated and unfit. Keegan comes in, has trouble getting them into the shape we wanted, then turned them into a team that went 7 games undefeated. WHO have we lost out on yet? HOW many players that can help us are still out there? This is a slow transfer market. You are getting p**** off because we bought a good young cheap player. With 7 weeks left in the transfer market. While still severly lacking in numbers. HOW do you know that Ashley is unwilling to invest? What you say pure hersay because we have not signed an Arshavin or Modric yet. HOW do you know what we have to spend and what our targets our? WE cannot just kidnap a bunch of players, we have to enqiure about player’s availability, negotiate a fairprice, discuss terms, and then *maybe* the player will decide to come to us. Jesus, you guys sound like you can chuck a few million quid at somebody and they will sign on the dotted line.

ok, he’s unlikely to set the prem alight because he’s solid but he’s still young and not excatly pacey or creative. he’s useful and will feature but if there is another cm signing to come (eg inler) he might not even start next season. i feel this is more of a long term signing with a view to having a solid, regular cm in a couple of seasons time. we will see
106 micepie // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:15
Fernando, by the way, you know that in spite of Spurs big spending Arsenal will still wipe the floor with you next season?
Anyway, that aside, Guthrie at least gives us more options. I’m also changing my mind about Barton and do think we should give him that last chance. If we could add another mf, preferably with more flare, and keep Barton we’ll have enough of a mf engine room. And give Lua Lua some chances too.

110 Ginkoh // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:19
I think this is Good signing for us, If not the best. I will happy to add young and talent in our squad.
Yes, every fan want Newcastle to sign big but how many time our big signing disappointed us. Do you remember Luque Owen Boumsong? and see our squad now. Our player who play good for us now are not big signing at all, N zogbia, Milner, Beye,Faye or even Sibieski on last 2 season.
So don’t disappoint too much if we don’t have big signing this summer. Even Ronaldinho sign for us. It doesn’t mean we are in top six automatically, Or who can garantee big signing player will be good for us ?
This season will show how good we are and set the next plan for the future. For me I don’t think we can finish in top6. 8-10 may be but I will very happy if we can go back to Europe.
111 fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:19
You can always trust 51times to come out with the typical racist stereotype. Even if arsenal do wipe the floor with us at least you cant question the boards ambition and they will keep trying until we get where we want to be.
112 Stephen // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:20
Yes i do i think your chairman is convinced spending big money this summer on players means finally ye can break into that top 4.
If you dont do it then the pressure comes and ye even might miss out on top 6..
Newcastle have being there before we got to the champions league qualfiers and lost on penaltys we havent being the same since..
Spurs aint a big club and never wiil be
the only reason ye have such a good squad is because ye are pretty impressive buying players.
like buy carrick for 2 million then sell him for 17 million
when that business sense goes because ye cant always be perfect in the transfer market then ye start to be under pressure
example bent 17 million waste of money……..

116 JJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:25
If Guthrie had come from say Notts forrest, he would have probably been the best player in their squad - alla Jenas or Dyer for Ipswich.
But because he comes from a top four side he is challenging Gerrard and Alonso for a start.
Had we signed him from Notts everyone would be saying bargain at 2M and future star.
Well I beleive he is more likely to succeed because he has already had premier league experience. And compared to Geremi, Butt, Barton - he cant be any worse and can only improve so yes I welcome the signing and believe he will prove to be a star.
Better than Viana thats for sure.
Inler as next signing please, then an attacking midfielder, striker and defender as our three big signings.
Add back up for left back and we are sorted for a top 6 finish.
117 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:25
2 signings up to now isnt bad. Only Chelsea (Bosingwa, Deco), Spurs (Modric, Gomes, Bostock, some keeper), Liverpool (Degen, Dossena, some other keeper) and us have bought players so we arent moving that slow in the transfer market.

very under rated.

Not saying Butt is bad, but for 2Mil this guy could do as good a job in a different role.
What Im saying is if we gona add depth, I would rather have young developing players like Guthrie than Butt (33), Geremi (32) as back up because that would be going backwards.
141 Craig // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:42
The negative reaction to this signing is pathetic. The lad has cost us in between 2-3 million. He’s 20 years old, can only get better and is English!
I was speaking to a Liverpool fan who I work with and he reckons we’ve got a great deal. Let’s not forget this was the lad tipped as the next Gerrard two seasons ago. Whenever I’ve seen him play last season for Bolton he has been their main attacking outlet. He has pace, flair, can pick out a pass and is verstaile in being able to play across the middle of midfield.
Ultimatley, he could walk into our current paper thin squad. This is a great coup. Let’s hope more signings follow.
King Kev doesn’t need big name players. He can motivate anything that walks!!!

I hate this whole “undisclosed fee” rubbish. Why can’t we know how much our club have spent on a player?
When it’s undisclosed you always have the doubt that we may have paid over the odds for a squad player.
146 harrier // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:43

My information is that influential Liverpool players are bewildered at the sale of Guthrie whom they rate really highly. Perhaps because he’s not Spanish? A bit light strength-wise but scope to grow. Potentially a very, very, good signing.
Speak as you find …and my lad and I thought he was top-class last season.

shame on them fans who though sacking sir bobby was the right thing to do
158 JJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:52
Fernando, i would far rather have had the history Newcastle has had in the past 15 years than Tottenham.
I wouldnt swap beating Barca 3-2 with a Tino hatrick, beating Feyenord in an awesome comeback (becoming the first team in history to qualify for the next round of Champions League after losing first three games) beating Juventus.
And signing Shearer. Playing the best football.
Only in the last two years had Spurs had slightly better seasons than us.
Newcastle has a far greater World Wide support base as well.
Spurs came here (South Africa) last year this time and I got to meet the players at a work function. - Jenas is a tosser by the way, Keane is awesome bloke and player.
My point is the expectations were the same then as they are now. Yet they failed. And will probably do so again this year.

160 domtoon // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:54
My goodness I’ve not noticed before but there are some funny, bitter, upset characters on here come the evening
We’ve just made a good signing. Our second, good signing.
Look guys, Guthrie is what he is:
-A hungry, 21 year old footballer who’s scrapped his way up from man u, to liverpool reserves, to southampton, to bolton, and now to the Toon;
-He’s made himself an increasingly frequent number of senior appearances and by all accounts he’s a good player whom Liverpool and Bolton fans are sad to see leave;
-He is reported to have said he wanted to come to the Toon all along;
-He’s apparantly quick, hardworking, box-to-box, and a developing eye for good passes, and also has a strong determined character (I read somewhere he was bossing Nolan in a Bolton game, for good or bad I don’t know, but point is he’s not shy);
-He will only want to get better and improve and become a fan favourite (I should hope…);
All the above and this is how some of you treat him? Are you supporters blind or what? If he had been the 5th or 6th signing of the transfer period, and all had been of his type, then yeah, fair doos, moan, because we should be aiming higher than that, but just because he is our second signing, pulled in on ‘the cheap’, does not by any means mean he deserves the verbal drubbing treatment being dished out right here and now.
How horrible would it be to be viewed like this, if he came on these boards? We should be excited for him and be giving him a chance, because as I said, he is what he is.
So, some of you, please don’t get so riled up over this signing, and give it a bit more time. We didn’t see this signing coming, nor did we see the Gutierrez signing coming. What makes you think we know what KK, MA, and the recruitment team have in stock for us?
Sorry but the negativity on this board really does get to me sometimes. It’s totally unjustified in the circumstances.

51 times joker you have already been banned once and cool dj you are not cool and you are certainly not a dj.
Guthrie is not a good signing he is a typical piece of cheap crap from a bargain basement that even bolton did not want..wise up.
163 JJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:57
@ Stephen
Sacking Sir Bobby was the right thing to do - he had lost the dressing room, was in ailing health and the club was again on the decline after his tremendous succuss.
However, our biggest mistake was appointing that tosser Graeme Soun-ass as manager.
He put us back 10 years and we havnt had another good manager till now.
So we have to rebuild, from theground to the trianing to the transfer funds.
Thats why managers sign 4 year deals, not 8 months.
The good ones need time, and the supporters need to show patience!!!
164 bin laden fc // Jul 11, 2008 at 20:57
I for one don’t really care too much about “other fans” coming on here and having an opinion. It’s a testament to how good Ed’s blog actually is.
As for Guthrie, we have to believe in the players KK is signing - so i think he’s a good signing!!!
165 JJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 21:00
sirjasontoon, Guthrie is a future signing and only 21, he is better than anyone in our youth team, inlcuding Carrol, and Lua Lua so for 2M, he is not crap he is a useful addition.
Quality signings have far more complications in the contracts and it will take longer to agree terms.
So again, patience AND, you wise up!

167 Stephen // Jul 11, 2008 at 21:01
I think Newcastle fans are extremly selfish and are the main reason we aint a sucess
Example Big Sam
That manager is an extremly talented manager not world class but is better than most managers in the league..
2 Things i want to add to this before people go on about boring football..
1.He lost solano and Dyer his only real 2 attacking players because they wanted the life in London and didnt have time to replace them so he had to get on with the players that were available.
2.He wanted to bring in Heinz and Distin as his first choice defenders but they wanted big wages and the BOARD rejected the idea of that and he had to get cheap players in rozenhal and cacapa didnt work out but beye was class and Faye.
In the january sales he would of bought arshavin for 7 million and dirra for 5.5 million are you trying to tell me we wouldnt be a good side with these players
In every game Big Sam managed he had to change one of his defenders because they were injured he never got a settled defence neither there or midfield or attack as viduka was out alot……….
Newcastle fans pushed him
in my opinion big sam is a better manager than kevin keegan
just my opinion

I was banned for speaking the truth, and the fact remains I am the easy scapegoat because of it. Hell, fernando comes on here causing trouble and I was the one punished for it. I have to hand it to you fernando, you’re very good.

JJ - I think Lualua is our best youth prospect, Guthrie is 21, can hrdly be called a youth prospect, a prospect but he aint that young.
Lualua has only just turned 17.

You think sacking sir bobby was a good thing
Ur an idiot
he got us 4th 3rd and 5th
everyone had respect for him the likes of robert said all the team loved him and would sit down for dinner and wait til he comes in first..
It was just the likes of dyer that ruined things because he wanted the london life..
Sir bobby was the best thing ever to happen to this club

Stephen - you obviously weren’t a season ticket holder last season to come out with a comment like that.

For those writing off Guthrie as a poor signing before he’s even kicked a ball in anger for NUFC, remember the general apathy to the signing of a one Craig Bellamy and remind yourselves how that signing panned out
