Guthrie Becomes Newcastle’s Second Signing

July 11th, 2008 · 59 Comments

As expected, the official Newcastle United web site tonight reported that Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Danny Guthrie from Liverpool.

danny-guthrie-new.jpg

Danny Guthrie - signed for the club this evening

The 21-year-old signed a four-year contract at St. James’ Park on Friday evening, after the Tyneside club had earlier agreed a fee with his Liverpool club.

Danny has signed for an undisclosed fee, although we would estimate the fee at round £2M, and he told the official Newcastle United site tonight:

“I’m really happy to be joining Newcastle United.”

“I’m ready to get involved straight away and I cannot wait to meet the boys and get started.”

Danny spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, and attracted a few clubs by his tidy play at the Lancashire side, and was certainly well liked by Reebok fans.

The charismatic Newcastle manager, Kevin Keegan, told the Newcastle web site tonight:

“I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve got Danny.”

“He proved himself in the Premier League last season so we know he can play at that level.

“He’s at the right age and is a good signing for us.”

Danny is now Newcastle’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of now 25 year-old Argentine international, Jonas Gutierrez, from Real Mallorca.

We think Guthrie may be a much better signing than a lot of Newcastle fans realize, hope so anyway.

We’re pleased Danny will immediately join in the training, and from what we hear, he’s in for a few rough first days from fitness specialist Mark Hulse, and Newcastle fitness coach Adrian Lamb.  :D

We are very pleased we have signed Danny and we warmly welcome him to our great club, Newcastle United.

Comments welcome.

    dubbed the new Gerrard
I’m remaining open-minded with this one!

  • 2 Nick // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:12

    wall virginity.

wont mind if it turns out to be another bentley etc signing.

i.e. leaving a top 4 side to get football and turns out quality.

hope he duz well, but hope fans give the lad a fair chance

  • 4 canmag // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:15

seemed a decent player when he was at the reebok last season could be a real good deal.

  • 5 Ashton // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:19

    Welcome danny boy

  • 6 Mac // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:19

I live in Liverpool and work with alot of Reds and everyone of them has said we have a very good and under rated player. Some of them can’t believe he’s been sold. I have seen him play a few times and i must admit i am a fan. Good passer of the ball fantastic engine. Honestly i think he is a first team regular

  • 7 Shearer#1 // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:20

Very underwhelmed. What happened to Arda & Aimar? Looking at the players Pompey, Man City & Spurs are signing & going for compared to ours, I think we’ll struggle to make top 10 this season.

  • 8 Tripp // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:26

The more midfielders the better. Wish ‘em the best.

  • 9 Howie // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:27

delighted about this signing. in the past 10 years wen has a big name signing worked for us. hardly at all. saw a bit of bolton early on last year and this guy stood out albeit in a poor side. trust me in 12 months we will be laughing at the fact some questioned this signing. at the moment in our situation in midfield he will walk into the team but i would say 1 more cm is on the way along with striker and 1 defender. if i was gonna guess i would say there will be 3 more signings (Derdiyok, jonny evans and possibly inler) and that will probably be it.

  • 10 Greg B // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:27

Good signing, and at a good price too - good luck to the lad.
I also read that Mike Ashley hates Spurs, always has done - an opinion that I share completley!

So next up, whats going on with Charlie now then? Arsenal or Spurs? I think the best advice he could have been given was to keep it shut untill after he had spoken with Keegan, what an imbacile!

    welcome young danny

  • 14 Danny // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:29

Anyone know what kind of player he is?
Is he a Butt/Barton type (without the violence), or a new Emre?
Any comments from those who have seen the lad in action?

P.S Seems that this is another player we haven’t been linked with before…

  • 15 The Entertainers // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:29

Was reading the ‘Pool blog on the Guthrie sale and one honest fan stated he believed Guthrie would be ‘more Warnock than Thompson’…..i would be very pleased if that statement came true.

Keep a momentum going Kev, bring in some more.

im glad we have bought english- young and someone schooled in club like liverpool

as for his attributes - i must investigate but happy

id luv it luv it if we had a Gerrad esq player in Guthrie

  • 24 AndyT // Jul 11, 2008 at 22:39

There’s a L’Pool fan sitting 10 ft away from me right now not gutted, but thinks we got a good premiership player with high potential.

    good signing!

  • 26 Daniel // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:02

He has been linked over the summer - was part of the exchange deal touted for milner (along with hobbs and one other - insua rings a bell) and it was in the papers a few weeks back that he had told friends he was joining us

Still, im happy with it - after all he is leaving as he has a desire for first team football which would have been restricted at the pool, and is a promising centre mid which is what we need. It wasnt so long ago he was being touted as the next Gerrard

  • 27 gordond // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:04

Reports say Michael Owen has been asked to take a 30k a week pay cut but incentives will be added on to make up his current wages

  • 28 Gareth // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:04

On the one hand - not exactly over excited at the signing - a big four reject with a limited track record… On the other hand, could have said exactly the same about Bentley at 21. So shrug, hope for the best, and fingers crossed that all of this is saving up some money for something big…

  • 29 Momo // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:05

Ended the season looking for new defenders and a quality new striker to replace viduka when he gets injured. Instead we’ve signed two midfielders. Both are good players but if we want to stop conceding goals, we need the phillipe albert style defender. Hopefully we can find someone soon

  • 30 Paul // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:07

Can we please cut this wall virginity toilet, puts me off reading the comments on this site, grow up

  • 31 Cloudstrife // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:18

welcome to the Toon Danny boy. do us proud.

  • 32 Daniel // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:31

I disagree momo - if you look at the back 5 (given, Beye, Enrique, Taylor and Faye) they are all solid. Perhaps a centre back and a full back who can play both flanks is needed for competition, but its not the worst defence we have had by far.

However, look at the choices we have for centre mid and its the worst I can remember (Butt, Barton, Smith, Geremi) and its blatant that is where we need to strengthen. I still believe we need one, probably 2 midfielders to come in.

Wingers are fine - Duff and Zog if he stays for the left, Jonas and Milner for the right

Strikers are again fine, as by the look of the signings it will be a 442 or 442 diamond so we have 4 players competing for that position (4.2 if you include smith)

I think Geremi will be a key player for us this year. He can cover right mid, centre mid and right back effectively, so saving on the necessity of a right back

So theoretically, I think we can get by with 4 signings - a left back, a centre back, and 2 midfielders. You could reduce this down again at centre half if you utilise Cacapa, Edgar, Tozer and Kadar, and again at left back with Edgar and Kadar.

I just realised this isnt really about the thread, so sorry for hijacking….

  • 33 geordiewannabefromwales // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:35

im pleased with the signing. and whoever we sign over this transfer window i will remain positive and optimistic because i believe in King Kev and his Toon Army.

After all if we dont back our King and Mr Ashley then what hope have we got of attracting big names to the North-East? If we get behind em and support them all the way, and create an immense atmosphere in the games to come, i reckon we’re in for an enjoyable season, whether we manage a european place or not.

    HOWAY THE LADS
    :) :) :)

  • 34 Patrick // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:36

Kadar has already earned a place in the Hungary National Team. I can’t see why we would not go for him in this upcoming season.

  • 35 Gareth // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:48

Prize for the stupidest thing said all night I’m afraid goes to Momo - “if we want to stop conceding goals, we need the phillipe albert style defender”. Obviously he was brilliant and the best attacking CB I think I’ve ever seen, but not the defender you want to plug the leaks at the back…

  • 36 Patrick // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:54

Even Darren Peacock was a attacking minded CB back then. Can’t remember how Stevie Howey did…

Haha, maybe we never have a “defensive CB.”

  • 37 Punk Skunk // Jul 11, 2008 at 23:55

The lad seems to wanna be here & play for the Toon!..i reckon he’s worth the money!..
    …Another 5 or 6 now, please!..5 would prob do!..

  • 38 dan // Jul 12, 2008 at 0:17

In that photo he looks like he could give Barton a good run for his money!

  • 39 Sav // Jul 12, 2008 at 0:32

As said, he wants to be here so that’s a good start.
I’ve seen him and been very impressed in some matches. He’s busy, and a good passer. But will fit in a bit too well in our ‘midgets 11′ as he’s only 5′ 7″.
Still he’s been with ManU and ‘pool so if KK can make a star out of the kid, he’ll luv it, just luv it!

  • 40 scott9 // Jul 12, 2008 at 0:38

i think he is a good signing i think people were xpecting a bit more like aimar thats why there a bit disapointed but i think he is a young hungry player who will relish playing under keegan and he will definatlery be up for it i think he has the potential and keegan will make him into a great player.

  • 41 gorskino10 // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:13

we can look at it 2 ways. One is that Kev is still active in the Market or looking at the sort of cash for a second signing being 2 mill will it be our only big signing??

  • 42 Ross G // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:20

Decent signing the good thing is that he wont come with big expectations and so will be able to bed in and prove himself. I think we will sign 4 more players for the first team, and Ameobi will go. These players will be a left back, centre back, another centre mid, and finally a big centre forward. Bassong is a very promising centre back, left footed he can also play left back. I would be shocked if we didnt spend a bit on the other players as technically Gutierrez was free, Guthrie around £1m. We have recieved around £8m plus another £3.5m for Ameobi. So our outlay is around £10m, plus around the £15m we got for our finish to last season. That is just that money without this years TV money etc. If we dont spend at least £25m from now I would be very disaapointed or at least have that money to play with, as Im sure Keegan likes Guthrie he must of been hoping for something better considering Modric was a major target. I would sign Simunic for cheap he is a top CB, Rat for £4m at LB. Inler in the holding role at £8m (Udinese laughed off the £5m valuation). Then maybe bring in Evans for £5m and Derdiyok for £7m. That will give us strength of two in each position. Given/Harper, Beye/Geremi, Rat/Enrique, Taylor/Evans, Simunic/Faye, Gutierrez/Milner, Duff/N’Zogbia, Barton/Guthrie, Inler/Butt, Derdiyok/Viduka, Owen/Martins. I would love to see us get £5m from Sunderland for Smith as I deem him surplus to all requirements. This would also allow us to loan out the likes of Krul, Forster, Kadar, Tozer, Lua Lua, Edgar, Carroll, etc. Then next season we can release Cacapa, and sell Viduka, etc and replace them with the youth hopefully. Wot you think?

  • 43 Joe // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:57

Haven’t read all the posts but I’m well excited if this is the calibre of player we’re going for. Not dissing the club in any way but how many times has splashing the cash on big name players gone right for us…Shearer…anyone else???

We need to go for the hungry youngsters who have the talent but not the opportunity. Someone mentioned buying a big four reject as a bad thing…erm…how is that a bad thing? Just because he can’t compete with Gerrard, Maschereno etc, does that mean he can’t compete with Butt and Geremi? C’mon fella!

2m for Guthrie is a steal! I saw him a few times for Bolton last season and he was always the best player in the side..not easy in the impeccable Bolton side (lol) but a well decent player whos gonna do the job for us!

Hey Ed or anyone else who can help

I’m going to college next year…and like a few of the people on this site i’m American. Last year i watched all the football games at home on our Tv. However this upcoming year at college i will need to watch all the games online. I’m willing to pay and i have checked out the nufctv link on the website but I’m not sure if it streams the games live? Any suggestions?

  • 45 Vitorbarbosa // Jul 12, 2008 at 2:57

He is young, proven premiership player and the fact is we need more players.

I’m not sure if he can walk straight into the first team, but I’m sure he will do a good job if we need him when our first teamers are out.

At least we are not just signing squad players, we sign squad player with potential.

  • 46 ScottyT // Jul 12, 2008 at 4:16

you never know this could be one of what i like to call them ’sibierski signings’ lol.

no1 thought much of him when he came and we gave him a bit of a hard time at first but he turned out to be a real gd buy. lets hope 4 tha same here. :)

  • 47 Toon_Ksk // Jul 12, 2008 at 4:21

I think we got a bargain. This is great news. 2 players, more to come!!!

  • 48 CrAiG // Jul 12, 2008 at 4:55

A decent signing~good passer wif great potential
But I doubt whether we can compete wif Spurs and Pompey or not…….
Signing is needed if we wanna back to top 7..
A CF is needed to hold the ball up and compete in the air…either Heskey or Derdiyok would be ok…
Then for midfield~Inler or Aimar would be possible wif lower price for about 5m, but a good quality to solidate our defense~
I would suggest~bring 1 CB and LB~Shorey will be my only choice wif cheaper price~hes a great signing~Collocini would all be possible to part wif Steven

    My 442 squard
    Given
    Beye Taylor Collocini Shorey
    Guti Guthrie Inler N’Zogbia
    Owen Martins

    433
    Given
    Beye Taylor Collocini Shorey
    Geremi Inler Guthrie
    Owen Viduka Martins

    In:
    Inler 5m
    Collocini 5m
    Shorey 4m
    Heskey 2.5m

Good player.. great value, long term signing. Smart buying by the upstairs crew.

  • 51 ObaforPM // Jul 12, 2008 at 8:48

I think this is a decent signing to be honest. He’s not a big name i know but he’s 21 has premier league experience and English. Normally your looking into about 6mill plus for that player. I know there always has been a quiet buzz about him turning into a good good player but because of being with l’pool he couldn’t get the experience. Also i hope that we make a few more signings of this size cause it might mean that more of the youngsters can get in the squad - come on Kazenga ! All in all good signing

  • 52 euanpolo // Jul 12, 2008 at 8:57

This is a very encouraging signing as well. There had been little speculation in the past month around Guthrie (I know we were linked with him before). So it shows that we are carrying out transfers in the right way, they’ve obviously learnt from the Modric saga. Lets now go out and get Zigic, Aimar, Inler, Larsson, Boulharouz and Shorey.

  • 53 WIGAZ // Jul 12, 2008 at 9:38

Well lets hope he turns out to be a new gerrard! how class would that be? comon toon army lets give this lad a chance! even Gerrard started out as a youngster coming in to replace ince! welcome to toon danny hope you have a gr8 career with us! i wouldn’t mind heskey on the cheap like give us another option, but when fit, big when, i think we have 3 of the best strikers in the league it’s our mid & def that need investing in!

  • 54 Matt Lacey // Jul 12, 2008 at 9:43

The naysayers on here are becoming a bit depressing. It’s hardly a glamorous signing but it’s a good one, ~2 million for a young player with Premiership experience looking for football outside a team he’d never get a look into because of his positional competition.

Guthrie and Gutierrez are well-considered transfers - the cost has been minimal, the risk is low, they are solid, consistent players and that is EXACTLY what we need.

Why do people think we did so poorly the last two seasons, is it just because we don’t have any good players? Sure, we haven’t got an all-star lineup but we’ve been let down time and again by injuries, poor form, expensive flops, and inflated expectations. Keegan and co are taking the approach to transfers that the club needs, not splashing the wealthy owner’s money on big names just because it’s there.

Patience - the club must begin anew, judge these signings on the football they produce, and as we improve again the signings will only get better and better over the seasons.

  • 55 Ben_BKK // Jul 12, 2008 at 10:17

I also agree that Heskey could possibly be a good signing. Look at how much better Owen’s record for England is in games he’s been partnered with Heskey, it’s miles better than with Rooney, who I’m sure almost everyone would say is a better player than Heskey.

On topic, I reckon this is a good signing by Keegan, is probably better than what we’ve got for CM at the moment, and he can play on the wings if needed. I look forward to him developing into a quality player.

  • 56 Andy1 // Jul 12, 2008 at 12:37

    Good signing.

To whoever it was who said, “why don’t we sign players like Pompey?” - they signed Glen Little, and took Ben Sahar on loan before signing Crouch.

We need to bring in numbers and quality.

  • 57 Sav // Jul 12, 2008 at 12:46

Trotters’ website gave him bitter send-off claiming Danny was ‘running in circles like a headless chicken’ (Parker?) until he ran out of pitch and scoffing his label as ‘the next Stevie G’.
But I agree with most of the sentiments above. It reminds me of when I first started to support Newcastle and most of our signings were relatively unknowns from places like Bury and Motherwell and PNE. Yet it was great when they turned out to be real stalwarts as quite often they did. As a fan, you feel they belong to the club, not that we waved a bigger wedge and poached a readymade from a top side.
As long as Guthrie or any other KK signings this summer don’t turn out to be like Luque I’ll be happy - and at 8 million less, he’s already off to a flyer as far as I’m concerned.

  • 58 Leo // Jul 12, 2008 at 13:19

i actually prefer guthrie to aimar to be honest, he is proven in this league and younger plus aimar is on a downward spiral so lets just stop complaining about the ’size’ of our names in our squad
