Liverpool Accept Newcastle Bid For Guthrie

July 11th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 277 Comments

Reports from Liverpool are coming through that they have today accepted an offer from  Newcastle United for midfielder, Danny Guthrie, who spent last season on loan at Bolton.

danny-guthrie-re.jpg

Danny Guthrie - 21 year old midfielder on his way to Tyneside

Guthrie will now hold talks with Keegan and Newcastle management, and it looks like if personal terms can be agreed with the player, the deal will go through.

Danny had told friends in Liverpool a few weeks ago, that he thought he was on his way to Newcastle.

Liverpool’s head of press Ian Cotton told the club’s official website:

“We have agreed a transfer fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Danny Guthrie,”

“We have now given Newcastle permission to speak directly with the player.”

A move to Newcastle will presumably give the 21-year-old the first team football he wants, but was unable to secure at Anfield, because of the squad strength of the 5 time European Champions.

But we would be surprised if he goes straight into the first team, and we think Danny is one for the future for Newcastle.

Guthrie is a central midfielder, who stands 5′9″ tall, and turned just 21 last April, so he’s around 16 months younger than Jmes Milner and Steven Taylor,  as an age reference.

He played 25 times for Bolton last season while on loan, and he will be one for the future, and looks a more than decent player.

He was born in Shrewsbury and grew up in Telford, and signed for Liverpool as a 15 year-old in 2002, after being released by Manchester United following a couple of seasons there.

Danny was also on loan to Southampton earlier last year, and played 10 times for the south coast club, and some fans down there said he looked a decent youngster, being only 19 at the time.

Guthrie started his first match for Liverpool in the European Champions League 3-1 loss against Galatasaray on 5th December 2006.

Interestingly, his last appearance for the Liverpool first team came in the 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park against Newcastle last year, on Saturday 10th February 2007.

We think he’ll be a good signing for Newcastle, and was initially offered in part exchange for James Milner, and we think that Kevin didn’t like the part exchange idea, but liked the look of Guthrie.

We have no idea right now what the transfer fee is.

Comments welcome.

    Bit like Barton really.

Not quite the Aimar/Inler-transfer I was hoping for though….

    is he any good??

  • 4 GM // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:11

cant remember seeing this guy play, although if bolton arent interested in him after he was there all season, doesnt seem the greatest prospect. Doesnt look like the creative gem we are all waiting to be signed.

  • 5 nufctj // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:11

Don’t remember him with Liverpool last season. Anyone got more info. on this guy? Strengths? Weaknesses? Did he play a DCM or ACM for the Scousers? Cover for Nicky Butt?

  • 6 AndyNUFC // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:12

Not convinced at all, not first team worthy and if he’s coming to play week in week out then he better think again… Surely we can do better than this?…

  • 7 davey // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:13

im starting to get the feeling we dont have that much money to spend
    =/

no big money been splashd around for a ‘big’ player but keegan knws what hes doing (Y)

  • 8 John // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:14

    im so underwhelmed about this….

If this guy is one off the TOP TOP TOP quality players Keegan was talking about before the window, we are in trouble..

Its bad enough signing half decent chelsea rejects but signing liverpool reserve’s is even worse…

Forget about top 6, we’ll probably come 11th or something like that

  • 9 Tom_Toon // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:14

Bolton did want him, but they ket getting bids rejected.

    Hes just a box-to-box cm.

  • 10 mikeygd // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:15

not what i was hoping for :(

I think I’ve given up on Van der Vaart. We’re shopping in the bargin basement.

  • 12 broon ale // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:16

nufctj. you wouldn’t remember him from liverpool last season as he was on loan at bolton, as mentioned in the article.

  • 13 Yorkie Dave // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:19

nufcj he played for bolton last year on loan. to me reminds me of Gary Speed. Box to Box player. would be a good signing to blood in the team with a more experienced creative player and if we get inler in aswell midfield looking stronger!!!
    Milner
    Geremi
    Guthrie
    Butt
    Inler
    N’Zogbia (probly off)
Barton (If he ever gets released and not sacked!)
    Duff

Also with Lua Lua and some more youth coming through then it could be a good solid midfield but i believe that we need to replace Duff and NZogbia as both will probly be off!!!

  • 14 The Entertainers // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:20

Depending on the price a very good move and one that could turn out to be quite shrewd in the long run.

The lad played a big part in Bolton staying up and by all accounts Bolton did want him, however Newcastle had made there intention early on and Bolton accepted he would move on to Newcastle United.

I believe he started out as a winger, however played more of a central role for Bolton and is a box to box midfielder. Really adaptable for the 4-3-3 formation. And YES hes English !

Now i still hope for a creative and defensive midfielder, but if this rumour is true then i’m delighted also.

  • 15 Pete // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:22

Well, Ashley went out public and said he was actively searching for investors. That’s basically saying that he’s not interested in spending more money without saying it.

I agree with posts above, extremely underwhelmed. I cannot see why we should spend 3 mill on this guy.. Sure hope he proves me wrong

  • 16 jamie // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:22

not really awe inspiring is it

  • 17 bettyswollocks // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:23

was talking to some bolton fans after the bolton home game last season and they really rated this lad. said he was their best player last season. not saying much mind but they said he was much better than nolan.

not seen much of him myself tho.

  • 18 mikeygd // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:24

daily mail is reporting a 2million fee

  • 19 Andez // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:24

He is an attacking midfielder. Very good drive. Good dribbler, therefore can play on both wings. Also has very assured passing. In terms of how good he is lets just say at this moment in time he is a starter for any team outside the top 8-10. Will be a very good player, im sad he didn’t make it at Liverpool. He does have potential but he is already pretty damn good.

For all the skeptics, all I can say is wait and see.

  • 20 Graham // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:24

    You miserable bunch!

No its not Van Der Vart etc etc etc. Weve got to get this rediculous notion out of our brains that we can attract such players without European football. We finished 12th last season so we cannot attract the kind of players others can (even Villa and the like - aston, not david!).

Its gonna be a long slog to get back to where we want to be and the things that are being done are for the long term.

We will get bigger players in than Guthrie, and i’m sure that certain plans are in motion for this to happen - but we need to strengthen the squad not just buy 11 big names

  • 21 stantos // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:25

guy’s it’s players like this we need to be signing, ffs we’ve tried the trophy signings and they don’t work. A player like guthrie could be a very shrewed signing over the long run, he’ll be looking to do well and god this fella can run and run and run ……………………………………………….

  • 22 liamtoonbirchy // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:26

lads we need to strengthen the squad and if it takes signing a young squad player before the likes of inler, a quality centre back and a creative midfield genius then so be it.

We have a really small squad at the moment especially in midfield so KK is sorting this out.

Any signing that KK makes i will back because to move us forward we need stability in all areas.

  • 23 Andy1 // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:27

I think he looks a good prospect. Already a steady prem player and only 21. It will be cheap and he has to an improvement on Geremi in my opinion. I don’t think we should be dreaming of Aimar or Van der Vaart. We don’t need someone like that at the moment and they could only possibly be attracted by money. Those big name signings have done nothing for us in the past.

We need to build a squad of hungry and young players and Guthrie seems like a good player. I think he is technically quite good, can pass well and gets from box to box. Not creative but a good steady player and he’s English, young and has prem experience.

I’d add Seb Larsson as well. Premiership experience is important and he is deadly at set pieces as well. If we can get him for £4.5mil, I think it could prove a bit of a bargain.

  • 24 WesToon // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:27

Not a bad player at all!! P.S he is nothing like Barton,he isnt a complete NUTTER!! With a much better range of passes, plus he is quicker,Not a world class signing, but do you guys think he is any worse than sidwell??? i think not!!

  • 25 Yorkie Dave // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:27

11 incoming players would be nice 8 young starlets and 3 good solid players for te team to build our foundations on the pitch!!

  • 26 neeraj // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:28

    hope he is good

  • 27 Nick Dryden // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:28

I was all for the Ashley approach of hungry talented young players. But top notch youngsters, not average ones who couldn’t get a permanent gig at Bolton, who have just spent a lot of money. Extremely depressing it has to be said. Wishing now that Ashley had sold out to that Chinese consortium. The Bin laden’s are absolutely loaded and are very tempting the way things are going.

  • 28 Flan // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:28

i remember this lad last season he was one of the names that stood out during boltons relegation escape. Not the worst signing we’ve ever made..

  • 31 Lars // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:30

I am a hardcore Liverpool fan and have for the last couple of seasons seen all games or highlights from Liverpool & Liverpool reserves matches. I always liked the look of Guthrie but with the strenght in Liverpool centre midfield, he would never really have a chance. More a Alonso kind of player with good passing and ball control. Lacks the work rate of Gerrard and ball-winning abilities of Mascherano.
Strange Bolton didn’t keep him, and my guess is he is priced in the £2-3 million bracket.

  • 32 paul p // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:30

if we sign players like this, then i am stopping my direct debit before it even starts. i am not forking out all that money for us to sign rubbish players like guthrie. if he was any good, he would be in liverpools squad still, bot loaned out at a struggling relegation threatend side last season. I will not be happy if we sign him. he is worse than what we have already. does not make any sense.

  • 33 ACD // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:30

I hope we get this lad! I personally think he’s a very good player, good engine on him and he’s young so got plenty of time to improve! I think this will be a great signing for us!

Come on lads, lets be honest we’re not going to attract the likes of Van der vaart!

  • 34 WesToon // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:31

Well said Andy1,couldnt agree with you more Mate

  • 35 Aussie Toon // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:31

Totally agree with Graham. Remember the future lads he would have been purchased for squad depth when we make Europe next 1-2 years. The couple of big names we are waiting on will come :)

  • 36 WIGAZ // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:32

May be a good buy lads! if we get him for cheap then why not? i hope we do add a bit of experience in the team tho. By that i mean Aimar, this guy is the player that can take us forward, we’ve got no hope of getting Andrei (you Pay) Arshavin & as much as i hope we suprise everyone with a deal for joe cole i think i’m dreaming! so aimar please at budget price! any more news on inher?

  • 37 DC Magpie // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:34

Tom Toon (or anyone else?) I was watching a u21 ivory coast squad last night, (Toulon replay) and was really impressed with a few of the players.

    Do you know anything about…
Kouamatien Emmanuel Kone - CM (CFR Cluj)
    Sekou Cisse- S (Roda JC)
Constant Djapka - LB (Bayern Leverkusen)

I’d take them all on trial

  • 38 DC Magpie // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:35

I thought Guthrie played out on the right for Bolton?

  • 39 Nev // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:35

great signing if its just £2mil … squad player for a year or two and should break into the first team by then … i agree with the person who said hes like gary speed
another liverpool lad we should look to sign is adam hammill! brilliant winger + hes my dads mates son lol

  • 40 Yorkie Dave // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:36

All you guys saying that he is not good enough. our squad isnt good enough for where we want to be we need fresh faces pace new ideas. Gone are the days where we spend a boat load of cash on one player and watch him do nothing!!! we have a structure at the club now we will progress this season but not into europe we must have a good cup run and build a solid team these are exactly the type of players we should be signing!! with 3-4 experienced players. If we had a squad like liverpool then we would be selling these type of players. But we are newcastle and we have been in a mess!!! we need to go about our business different to the past!!!!

  • 41 Bob // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:36

Good value at £2m and an improvement on our current squad….sign him.

  • 42 broon ale // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:37

i cant find these reports anywhere? !

  • 43 paul p // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:37

i am just getting frustrated that we are not doing anything at all. i can’t see where the big name players are coming from, saying that spiderman came from absolutely no where did’nt he. so i suppose we will have to wait and see. I think mark noble would be a better prospect than gutherie in my opionion. he is young, good on the ball, passer, can tackle, score goals etc.

  • 44 neeraj // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:38

to be fair we cant judge an english player in benitez’s spain 11
he was a fan favorite in bolton
and we can only hope he is good and can improve

  • 45 cooldj // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:38

if we get him and inler we are still lacking in an emre style AM so i can’t really understand this signing. still if it’s only for 2 or 3 mil then it might turn out to be a small bargain. we’re very short at bodys at the mo. so if he’s cheap, young and at the moment average then so be it. he can’t be much worse than the liks of smith and butt.

  • 46 Ally // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:39

I agree with this notion that we cant attract the van der vaarts and velosos of this world, but why cant we show a bit of intent and go for these players they can only say no, unless we maybe have gone for these players and they have turned us down, i suppose this is the boat we are in at the moment

  • 47 The Entertainers // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:39

The Liverpool echo is running the story along with the Carson story…..thats where these rumours are coming from

  • 48 Ally // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:39

where desperate for a midfield ball player! some one like Aimar

  • 49 micepie // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:41

I for one am very pleased. I just want us to get some half-decent players in for now and not worry about the Van de Vaarts etc yet. And for KK to inspire players like Guthrie to their best.

  • 50 Dondatta13 // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:41

We’ve got a tiny squad at the moment. I welcome any half decent player into the fold. He’s young, English and he has prem experience. I think we will get a few more like this along with the big money/big player we are all baying for.

VDV for the Toon ! lol

  • 51 Stay tooned // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:41

Personally, i think this is a good signing. We are not going to get too many high flying players, so it is better to try and build a healthy squad who are willing at least to put some effort in.

  • 52 Danny // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:43

I have my thoughts on the slow going transfers at St. James’ Park…
I think Mike Ashley has introdused many rules that may put many players off, including some clauses put in contracts offered to new players, so that Newcastle wont pay as much in case of underperformance or injuries. Too much detailed control from Mike at that point. It’s not good that KK isn’t involved in all the transfer/contract talks, which i really think he isn’t.. ONE player in, after all that time…
I belive something is wrong and things are too much businss like and has too little personal efforts put in it…
    Thats what I feel…
And the fact that Kevin is so quiet these days I like even less, he’s told far far less to the media following that meeting they had earlier this year, after the so called “blowouts”.
I hope for the best, but think Mikes structure is looking a bit too tight tbh…
And he’s up there with the richest of them, but is seeking billionare partners…??

  • 53 Ericles // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:44

Must trust KK on this one. Looks like Smith is staying, and Barton I suppose. Not good at all.
Where are Derdiyok, Aimar, Inler etc? Looks like the Mackem Waltz - slow, slow…slow slow…slow.

  • 54 Karl // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:44

Paul p: like we could lure a first team player from Liverpool to us! They will play CL football next season.

I would be happy if some of the players that are almost good enough to start every match for the top 4 would sign for us. SWP is not good enough for Chelsea, does that mean that you dont want him for Newcastle?

Welcome Danny, if you really come…

PS: If we do well until the next window opens, THEN we might get the VDV etc…

  • 55 Toony Montana // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:45

    From the Liverpool Echo:

The England international keeper is likely to follow Danny Guthrie through the exit door after Liverpool accepted an offer from Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle for the midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Bolton.

Guthrie will now hold talks with Keegan and if personal terms can be agreed the deal will give the 21-year-old the first team football he craves but was unable to secure at Anfield.

  • 56 Fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:47

Great signing. This really is a signal of intent . This shows that ma and kk mean business. The likes of Arda and VDV will see this signing and think i want to be a part of that. I think you even beat spurs to his signature.

  • 57 Ciaran // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:48

Inler’s not looking great at the moment, Udinese have denied any interest and went as far as to say even if Newcastle were interested, he wouldn’t want to go. Hopefully this is just a worried management trying to dissuade people from meeting a 5mil escape clause but Inler could very well become another of those names that never happened. Guthrie’s an average signing. I don’t think for a minute he’s been brought in to anchor our midfield, so in that regard 2mil for an energetic young squad member in a club short of numbers seems like good business. The only reason people are against it is because we’re all dying for a big-name signing, and it can be deflating to hear Guthries name after weeks of trawling the internet hoping Inler or Skeljbrad (probably spelled wrong) signed.

  • 58 Michael // Jul 11, 2008 at 13:49

Hell of an anti-climax if this is to be our next signing. Wont improve our first team at all.
Its on the Liverpool official site so its not just a rumour. If we pay anything more than 1 million its a joke.

    This is hardly encouraging.

He may be a good prospect, but we should do a lot better.

  • 94 GEORDIE CHRIS // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:13

Ok so the Premier League this season alows for 7 subs…

We need 3 or 4 of these so called “squad players” just to make the numbers up as currently we are very thin on the ground.

Granted we do still need 3-4 “class” players who will walk straight into the starting line-up!

(dont think we can attract “world class” yet tho)

  • 95 Obafan // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:13

I really don’t know what I must think of the business NUFC are doing. I know it is not possible to go from 12th to ECL in one season, but I think we need to show more ambition in signing quality players. Guthrie is perhaps not a bad player, but I think if the likes of Michael Owen and others see that these are the new players to build the ’stronger’ squad; they will not be jumping around at all. This can lead into not renewing his contract and going away next season ‘for free’!!!

I know we still have plenty of time to get new players, but I’m not so sure about the policy.

I’m getting a bit worried that we will not get a stronger squad next season and that we again have to go for a 12th place or so.

I couldn’t give a monkey’s about Spurs, I live doon sooth and some of my mates are Spurs fans along with Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Reading & strangely lots of QPR fans. Most of them are fine it’s just the odd prat like this Fernando. Pleas don’t respond to him lets keep this a Blog about the team dear to all of us NUFC

  • 99 Bosck // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:14

will people stop saying bolton did not want to sign him so he cant be good enough, as some people have already said above bolton were desperate to sign him but as they were quoted as saying a couple of weeks back, once he heard of newcastles interested they realised that he would not join them so gave up. this is the kind of signing we need, yes it would be great to get inler but we need more than one cm, butt isnt getting any younger, barton may or may not be here and hasnt played to past standards, geremi not hit real form yet, and emre is off.

personally i am delighted , if we sign him for £2-3m that would potentially be a great signing for an english player if you consider the price liverpool seem set to pay for barry.

one biggish name and more signings like this in the rest of the window would make me more than happy with the window.

think of the star names we have signed that havent worked:

    kluivert
    marcelinho
owen (good now but took 2 years)
luque (not a star name but big money)
viana (european u21 footballer of the year)

star names arent everything. i’m sure when rob lee signed for newcastle there were people that didnt think he was a big name but he became a hero for us, how many people had heard of asprilla or ginola before they signed?

i would much rather have a team of hungry young players looking to make their name than a team packed full of over paid unmotivated “star names”.

  • 100 Fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:14

Broonale- did you like how ledley lifted the cup. You do realise you can go on tours of wembley where you can have your photo taken lifting a trophy. might be a nice experience for you.

  • 101 Nathan // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:15

The fact that Bolton turned down the chance to sign him is far from encouraging, we’ll see though, I like the idea of bringing in youngsters and making them into stars, he clearly has desire, that can only be a good thing.

Fernando, please stop being pathetic, people biting at him are just as bad, if you don’t respond to him he’ll get bored and not come back

  • 102 broon ale // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:15

Just continuining on from Fernando’s comment… Just imagine it, picture it… First game of the season, imagine what it would be like if we beat Man U? The expectations for the rest of the season… the delusion of many fans! One can only dream :(

  • 104 Eran // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:16

fernando - from the bottom of my heart, after seeing spurs’ squad last year, if you looked at it in terms of individual players, were very strong.
you can continue to buy great players, fact is your club has no true spirit in it.
last term you sucked, the next year will be no different. all the players you bought just want to enjoy London. playing for spurs isn’t a big dream of no-one. we have atleast some players who are passionate about being here.
good luck next year, you’re gonna need it, as I feel if the spuds aren’t going to gel very quickly and play as a strong unit, I bet your manager is going to be the first one shown the door :)
    think happy thoughts.

  • 105 Obafan // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:18

I’m happy to see this sort of signing but I would put him down as a young prospect and still want to see some big names coming in, Schweinstiegger for example.

  • 111 Michael // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:26

  • 121 Ian // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:36

We should play him as a main player and see if he cuts it, not the player I would have expected.

I hope we buy Cisse or Kitson as a striker, I dread to think who they will have lined up at the front, that is two signings of little significance. I hope the person that has chosen them has seen loads of potential that everyone else has missed and that is why they are in the job and it isnt just a cheap player purchase. If they are doing that we may as well go out and buy decent old timers, there are a few around the £2m who will be ok season by season, the likes of Sibieski, Roberts etc at least we know they can produce if the youngsters or unknowns do not come up with the goods.

  • 122 Kash2 // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:36

@All - Why is it we have a Spurs fan frequenting a Newcastle site?

Is it because he’s sad? Quite possibly

Is it because they can’t afford PC’s in North London or they’re usually stolen by some drugged up scally? Most likely

Is it also because Spurs fans (who are known to be very racist) don’t like to visit the internet cafes set up by ethnic people? Could be a viable reason!

Or mainly because the conversation is so dry in North London that you can’t get a word in edge ways from all the Cockney slang they speak.

I work in the city of London, and you know what the best thing about working here is? There aren’t many Spurs fans as they’re too stupid to get an education and a well paid job.

That leads me to think that Fernando is either a:
Bus Driver, Taxi Driver, on Social, Postman etc etc etc

  • 123 Pool for ever! // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:37

  • 126 bettyswollocks // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:39

  • 127 Bosck // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:41

michael - arsenal let bentley and sidwell go, everton could have signed owen, we let beardsley go before resigning him later, we rejected shearer. clubs do let good prospects go.

liverpool are letting him go cos rafa benitez likes overpaying for players and then getting rid of them a couple of years later which he will probably do with barry.

think bellamy, crouch, diao, diouf, cisse, morientes, kewell.

  • 128 AndyNUFC // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:43

  • 129 Dondatta13 // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:43

Im not too sure Liverpool or more accurately Rafa think Guthrie is not a good prospect. In all honesty I think Rafa doesnt have the luxury or time to wait untill players of Guthries age develop. I feel (IMO) that Rafa has to deliver this season, hence he is generating cash for Barry, How much time at the helm do people think he has realistically?

Think about it, if your job was under threat (theoretically), would you keep Guthrie, hope and wait for him to flurish, Or would you sell and by a more established midfielder?

Just the same picture … observed at a different angle …..

    First of all:

Everyone, this guy has just signed for us. Support him for goodness sake, have trust in KK and MA and our recruitment team. This guy could be a gem and we don’t know it yet so give him a break. I wonder how many heralded Luque as a wonder signing to be dismayed as time rolled on. This could be the exact opposite and I’m willing to cheer this guy on when I go see my next game.

    Secondly:

Fernando, come to the light side, I sense there is still good in you…conflict…

Why else would you keep coming on this site to ‘wind’ us up (which I might add isn’t working. Simply knowing I have seen us dismantle your team on more than one occasion, means that anything you say is like thin air)?

I think you must have an NUFC/Spurs complex and deep down want to be a member of the Toon army.

Were probably at a few of those thrashings we handed out and this is your release from that? We’re pretty loud aren’t we? Hmm shame Spurs fans aren’t that fanatical eh?

Liverpool have one of Brazil’s top prospects in Lucas Leiva + they have Gerrard, Barry, Mascherano and Alonso so there was no way that Benitez was going to wait for Gutherie to develop.

By no means a spectacular signing but a solid one that will bolster our worryingly thin squad.

  • 138 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 11, 2008 at 14:54

Im am so sick and tired of these so called Toon supporters who are only happy when the club signs “big” names which in turn end up being BIG FLOPS.
We need more signing like these!!!!
Nobby Solano only cost us 1Mil, look at what Speed, Rob Lee, Albert, cost us and look at what they have done for this club.
Even Michael Owen has been a flop to date and only really showed any form toward the end of the season!!!!
Every comment from a Liverpool or Bolton supporter is one that they are upset they no longer have him!!!!
Would you guys please stop your’re Van der Vaart, Arshavin nonsense…. this is not your FM ‘08 game and we need to build this club up.
Other people accussing Mike Ashley of not spending, he has spend 7Mil on two players. Im sure there are biggers signings ahead.
    He has done everything right!!!!
Cleared the debts, brought back Keegan, got in some talented youngsters and great coaches to get something out of our failure of a youth system, and now he is working hard to get people to invest in the club so that we can challenge the likes of Man United and Arsenal.
All this in the space of a year!!!!
So lay off Mike Ashley, and be grateful our club is finally and slowly heading in the right direction….

@ Domtoon: I can completely appreciate what you’re saying but I used choice words. And Bastard really isn’t swearing considering its meaning and context.

Again, this was banter, which as part of Newcastle site, other fans have to get used to!

Us geordies are famed for our banter, the cockneys love it, because they’re too ponsy to fet involved in it themselves!

  • 170 Fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:13

No offence taken kash2 but some people need to calm down with all the calls for getting me banned. Having spoken to ed via email he has made it clear i am welcome as long as i am not abusive. I would ask people to cut the racist remarks as you will only get yourself banned and i will be the only one left on a newcastle blog with nobody to talk to.

  • 171 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:13

Harrier Im not insulting KK, he can only sign player with money he has been given! not alot!!and MA has come out and admitted he is skint! says it all!!
the crap we had in our team last year most of it will still be in our team this year!!
Smith, Duff, Geremi, Viduka, Ameobi etc

  • 172 Kash2 // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:13

If I get banned, then I get banned. Ed’s choice really. All it will mean that i get more work done, and probably get paid a higher bonus come October!

  • 173 Flan // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:13

IMPORTANT POINT: If southerners can generalise geordies, why can’t we generalise them?

I can and I shall! Ain’t that right Fernandoodoo?

  • 176 Daniel // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:16

    on the official site now

  • 177 Dondatta13 // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:17

Sigh … I will say it again ….

Im all for young up and comming talent being signed for next to no money at all, hungry players, great, should have been done years ago ….

The problem seems to be that, in the past we wanted every signing that came through the door to be a world class international, fat Freddie, tried to deliver this and ran up alot of debt.

Now thou, we seem to be at the other end of the spectrum, signing only cheap bargain basement players (with potential).

Balance is what we need, I fully appreciate the old days are gone, where we get 4-5 top internationals walk through the door during preseason.

However I still expect at least ONE top, top player to make an entrance during this transfer window. MA doesnt make a billion Pounds by being nieve. He knows we cannot expect to survive with sub £5 million transfers. A big player, for big money will help sell season tickets and shirt sales (did everyone read the fact that sales are at a record low for his sports wear company). As well as help propell us up the table!

So JJ, with all due respect ….. VDV for the TOON! ;)

somehow the guthrie news just popped up from nowhere today..another hush hush transfer by the team..however with regards to shirt sales and getting a creative midfielder i wonder if we are after shunsuke nakamura from celtic..would love for him to join us..

  • 180 Fernando // Jul 11, 2008 at 15:23

    The choice is:

    GUTHRIE £2million est’
    OR
    DIGAARD £4million est’
    ???????

No choice, so glad the French lad ‘turned us down’ !……i for one have had enough of French players wearig the black and white shirt!
