Gary Speed Sure Guthrie Great Signing For Newcastle

July 12th, 2008 · 152 Comments

Our former stalwart central midfielder, the great Gary Speed, has said today that he believes Newcastle United new boy Danny Guthrie will be a great signing for Kevin Keegan.

gary-speed-473.jpg

Gary Speed - great midfielder for Newcastle United

Gary Speed, who is now 38, should know what he is talking about, because not only did he play over 200 games for Newcastle United between 1998 and 2004, but he also played alongside young Danny Guthrie at Bolton Wanderers last season.

Speed thinks the 5′9″ midfielder will prove to be a very good buy for the Newcastle club.

The former Welsh international talked to the Evening Chronicle today:

“Danny is a very good player and he will be a great signing for Newcastle.”

“I know because I played with him at Bolton last season in the same team and he did very well.”

“He did take a little bit of time to settle into the team but he is still a young player.”

“And once he was in the team he stayed there and became a regular.”

“He did well once he was in despite Bolton struggling.”

Speed knows that Bolton Wanderers wanted to keep Guthrie, but we think once the player knew Newcastle were after him, he made up his mind to join former Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan on Tyneside.

Speed, who played 85 times for Wales, and is tipped to be a future manager of his country,  feels that Bolton Wanderers fans will be disappointed to see Danny join a rival Premier League side.

Several weeks ago Danny had told his friends in Liverpool that he would be joining Newcastle United in the summer.

Speed added:

“The Bolton fans took to Danny straight away and they wanted the club to sign him from Liverpool.”

“I think the Newcastle fans will like him too.”“He’s energetic and an honest lad. He should do really well.”

Guthrie is from Shropshire and has starred for England at youth levels, beginning with the England Schoolboys side in 2003, while he was with Liverpool.

Danny is one the fringe of the England Under-21 side, and he made 7 appearances for the Liverpool first team, in all competitions.

He also played a total of 35 appearances in all competitions for Bolton Wanderers last season.

Comments welcome.

If I wasn’t sold already then I would be now….Gary Speed does know what he is talking about!

    1st Comment….Yes!!

  • 2 clinta // Jul 12, 2008 at 14:44

If his as good for us as gary was over the years than we’ll of done a good bit of business.

nice age, nice price and a good bit of pl experience at such a young age.

So how many games in the pl has gary speed clocked up now then, anyone know?

  • 3 Hadrian // Jul 12, 2008 at 14:45

reports in a couple of papers(more credible than the sun or mail!) the fee was closer to 1 million :o .

  • 4 shirts // Jul 12, 2008 at 14:53

seems encouraging, though I’ve never seen him play to the best of my knowledge.

I’m wondering where he’ll play and instead of whom… Butt to the bench?

  • 5 YongMalaysia // Jul 12, 2008 at 14:54

i totally think this is a good business, he is young and got some EPL games experience, just that he need some time and support.

we need to to give this young lad a chance.doesn’t means taht he isn’t good enough for newbastle utd because he wasn’t in Benitez plans.every maneger has his opinions.Danny is still 21 and Keegan can develop him.i hope

i think we still need another 2 very good creative midfielders,1 strong striker and 1 or 2 defenders to have a complete squad.then we ca say that we are ready for next season to challeng top 6 spot

hope that my dream come true

gary speed was a player which you didnt realise what you had till it was gone…

we certainly missed him when he joined bolton

    from newcastleMAD site -

NEW SIGNING! But What Do Bolton Know That We Don’t?

According to reports from Merseyside, Newcastle look set to sign midfielder Danny Guthrie after they agreed a fee with Liverpool.
Guthrie spent the whole of last season on loan with Bolton Wanderers, but the Trotters have turned down the option of a permanent deal and he is now poised to sign for Newcastle.

what a load of tosh - seems everyone and his dog knows that bolton did try and sign him thank god we’ve got this site that actually goes into research and stuff. Personally, i saw guthrie myself a bit last season and thought he looked in a different league to some of the other bolton players so hopefully he’ll turn out a good signing

  • 9 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:04

Good signing along with the Spanish lad. But we need to sign proven quality and that costs money. WE are NUFC. I will not be happy signing one and two million pound players whilst Bolton and Ports and lots of other clubs sign many £10M players. It makes us look broke. How can we be broke when we have no debt. Manure are Hundreds of millions in debt and so are Arsenal. Why can they afford expensive players and we who are debt-free cannot?

  • 10 Bill F SPLASH MORE CASH ASH // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:06

Another good young prospect, but I am still waiting for the Quality signings Mr Micawber, sorry Mr. Ashley I mean.

  • 11 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:13

Daiv it doesn’t matter how much the player costs, Gutierrez is apparently a really good player and he only cost us a few million in terms of buying out the players contract etc

where as Elmander cost Bolton 10million and he aint worth it, i would have been let down if we signed him for anywhere near that amount

  • 12 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:21

i am happy with how things have gone so far in terms of transfers, we have spent little and made decent signings. We are clearly looking in the right places for talent and our scouting system has won me over

  • 13 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:23

im with you there spyro mate

  • 14 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:24

Poulsen is set to sign for Juventus, which means Xabi Alonso’s move there may not happen now, there has never been a better time to act quick and at least try to get him in, he is a fantastic player and can defend and pick an awesome pass.

  • 15 beye the great // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:24

you never no he could either be a gem like speed and lee
or a disaster like viana n jenas

  • 16 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:25

GG7, what you think about Alonso situation, i would sign him for anything up to 15million, he is exactly what we need, creativity in the middle of the park

  • 17 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:25

i like xabi, but he wont come. i think poulsen is class though

  • 18 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:26

i couldnt see him coming to us, i have a sneaky feeling from what i have been hearing that he may be off to the arse

  • 19 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:27

PLUS we have something Liverpool want, Milner. If we offer Milner and 10million it would be good for both sides

i too doubt Xabi Alonso would be ecstatic with the move, but he is not what i would call an impossible signing

  • 20 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:28

god i hope not, Xabi and Cesc in the middle for Arsenal would be ridiculous, best creative midfield in the prem

  • 21 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:30

nah defo not an impossible signing, is very good though, i techniquely ver gifted player. i think guthrie will turn out such a good player, he is abit like a terrier

  • 22 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:34

    Spyro,
I accept we cannot buy stupidly as we did in the past. But we have to strike a balance. We will never be a top 6 (forget 4 this year) team buying £1M players. Not while other teams are shelling out a lot more. We are not in debt but seem unable to attract the proven top players. Or are we not trying. MA wants to run NUFC like a business. Football is not like that. All the top teams are in debt except us but appear to have more ambition. Any profit NUFC make is not going on players, as things stand, but into the pockets of the billionaire BUSINESSMAN who claims he cannot afford NUFC on his own. I am not impressed with our businessman. I want a rich romantic who loves the club not another owner who wants to make a profit out of it and us. Where is NUFCs Jack Walker? He must be out there somewhere.

  • 23 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:35

i think it also makes alot of sense fro xabi to go to the arse.

i think we should defo sign inler, larsson and zhirkov. that would be very good, i know its no vdv or anything but i like all these players alot

  • 24 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:36

guthrie will definitely improve fast, you can tell by his attitude in his comments that he aint the “cant be bothered” type, and the way he played for bolton last season was fairly impressive, tried really hard and earned himself a place

  • 25 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:38

i would jump at the chance to sign those 3 GG7, especially Inler and Zhirkov as we cannot rely on Zoggy and we need quality CM’s

  • 26 craig chisholm // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:39

i am happy with the guthrie deal lads but what i am worried about is the ashley seems to be implying that he is going to sell chunks of us off again only a year after fighting to buy us - what is the point in that. I want to know why he is pleading that he needs investors and that his is an expensive seat when we turn in a profit? how can he have a problem with us - any accountants out there than can enlighten me like cos i am lost on it really. We made money when we had loads of debt, more players on higher wages, since then we have sold more than we have bought - this close season alone he is into profit on sales by millions on what we have bought, plus tv revenue going up etc - why can we not manage when other clubs do and many with half the gates that we have? any ideas?

  • 27 alex scott // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:39

Davi you fool - man u etc are in the champions league which means millions of pounds. And we may have no debt but if the owner won’t spend then thats that!!

And just because a player costs loads of money doesn’t mean they’re any good - boumsong, vianna etc etc….

  • 28 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:40

    Daiv

It seems like you want a signing to show other players and clubs a signal of our intent and ambition. I say, it doesn’t matter to me if we buy cheap as long as we buy right, there are benefits to both our POV’s. we buy expensive it shows we are ambitious, we buy cheap and it shows we are no busters and we wont be taken for a ride.

What do you think of Xabi Alonso? would you go for him whilst his transfer to Juventus seems to be in turmoil?

whats the deal witht his Bassong guy? never seen him play

  • 29 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:44

i hope we see that little knob n’zogbia

  • 30 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:46

    Alex Scott
You say if the owner won’t spend then thats that!!!
So thats OK then is it and we should just sit back and take it on the chin happy that he is in charge.
He spent virtually nothing last summer as well.
I don’t know abouy you but I travel all over the country watching the Toon spending small fortunes. I resnt that our owner is pocketing millions.
MUFC may be in the Champions League but they sre still hundreds of millions in debt. Or does Champions League entry absolve clubs of debt. No, MUFC pay mega millions more on transfers and wages. The debt remains and the profits are churned in transfers and wages. Our profit seem to go elsewhere into pockets of rich owners who claim hardship

  • 31 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:48

GG7 Zoggy has been my fave player for years now so despite his comments a small part of me wants him to stay

Daiv you didnt answer my question about alonso

  • 32 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:50

Some on this blog seem to think MA can do no wrong. He must be God or the writers are related to him. He is in it to make a profit and will not risk his own money. That is the bottom line. If thats a great owner then I’m Cinderella.

  • 33 Piers // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:52

I agree Spyro. I think Alonso would fit perfectly in our midfield. However it would seem quite unlikely of a transfer actually happening with Alonso. Anyways does anyone know how many players we are after this summer and what our budget for summer transfers is? As far as Guthrie is concerned….anyone with a hard working ethis like Guthrie is great for our club.

But still like many of us i am eagerly awaiting a major Newcaste United signing this summer. We deserve a star player who can take us to Europe next year!

  • 34 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:53

    Spyro,
Alonso would be great but we won’t get him. I love KK but can’t stand the owner. I would be amazed if we buy anybody costing more than five or six mil. Alonso is out of our league. He is PROVEN quality but they cost money.

breaking news: newcastle give trail to young defender.

  • 36 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 15:57

oh god, i was half way through writing a message as to why he would come, looking for any possible factor that might swing the transfer in our favour, but it is pointless, i deep down know you guys are right, we aint even going to go after him much less attract him into our club, oh well, dream was good whilst it lasted, all 15 mins of it

  • 37 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:00

i agree we need a star player, someone we can rely on to pull something out of the bag when we are really struggling, but it might not necessarily be an expensive player, our star signing could cost 1million, you never know

  • 38 jettson // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:00

Speed speaks with years of experience and know how, give the lad a chance, he is no forign mercenary here after cash, he wants to play!! unlike some of our signings in the past, still need the top quality players tho, Aimar for me and Inler then a top class youngish striker (derdiyok) let Shearer show him how its done! then onto the defence a campbell like centre back needed, but who????

  • 39 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:01

    Spyro,
I want proven quality and not trophy signings. Both cost money. Guthrie may be a good player but he is not a top 4 player is he? Let go by Liverpool and on loan to Bolton so we buy him. He is a good player but is unlikely to make us a top 4 team. We need a couple of proven top players this summer to make us into a challenging team but I cannot see it happening. After the lack of funds last summer I find it all so disappointing. Last summer and to date this summer, I would bet we are one of the clubs who have spent the least. Not good enough for a so called top team We are the thirteenth richest club in Europe. Hard to believe isn’t it?

  • 40 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:02

Cigarini or Biglia for the Toon! :D

  • 41 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:03

but why do they have to be proven, a player could not be proven but come here and absolutely light up the prem, someone who is proven may come and flop, why is proven so important? i dont get it

  • 42 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:03

zogs has done well for us, but he does think he is something he is not. does anyone know what tom toon thought about the guthrie signing, i know he isnt much fan of english players, wich thinking about it, im not really either, but surely he must of thought danny g is a good youngster

  • 44 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:04

    NOOOOO!! who to?

  • 46 craig chisholm // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:05

i know that chucking money around does not mean sucess but we are spendiong less than champoinship clubs at the minute - it would be unfair for ashley to demand anything more than mere prem survival on the pathetic money he is making avaialble- in fact, he is making none available is he - he is still millions up on who he has sold compared to what we have bought - the rozza deal alone was more than we have splashed out on our first two signings. i am all for being shrewd, but this bloke is just a complete tight wad and is making big profits on us now but is keeping it as his sportsworld is nose diving - at our expense!!!

  • 47 Campo67 // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:08

mike ashley said u cant make profit out of a football club. he said you have to sit back and enjoy it. he does not want to make a profit, well he’d like to but he knows it not going to happen

  • 48 mushy // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:10

GUDJOHNSEN and GOMIS for the Toon, 100% and here’s how I know:-

Recent signings: Barton, Babayaro, Butt, Boumsong, Bramble, Bellamy, Beye, Baheng etc. Don’t you see, NUFC had a ‘B’ fetish.
Now look at the latest recruits: Gutierrez and Guthrie. We’re now looking for the ‘G’ spots.
Add your own to the list, you wont be wrong.

mushy your right!!!! our new signings will be one or two of the following…

    Lucas Giglia,

    Xabi Galonso,

    Gokhan Ginler,

    Yuri Ghirkov

  • 51 daiv // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:14

    Spyro,
Guthrie is cheap becuase he has has potential and may be a good buy. Alonso is dear because he is proven quality who has done it at the highest level. Even with him there is a risk as with all transfers…can he still do it? But someone who has done it (and is still young) will always cost more than someone who has not but may do so. We are buying the cheaper potential signing (which is good) but we need to mix it up with some proven quality to make us progress. Who would you rather have Guthrie for £1M or Alsonso for £10M? The owner has to cough up at some stage. We are the best fans in the world and deserve better than careful ownership ( I call it being tight) and penny piching on stupid things. Owen can have £100K a week but the players (some on only£5K aweek) have to buy the club suit. Thats straight out of Mand S business and has no place in a football club. I agree we need to run on a profit but not where nearly all the profit goes to MA and the supporters are left with the crumbs.

  • 52 geordieboy // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:15

  • 55 chuck // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:22

Unbelievable ! you guys have to be the most optimistical fans ever.
We sign a Liverpool cast off for around £2m. and everyone is ecstatic and oh! someone got Gary Speed to give him an endorsment, not quite a ringing endorsment, but Garry was allways an honest guy.
Seems they got KK to add his okay also, tough spot he`s in .
Cant imagine the reaction if we signed a player of the caliber being signe d by Arsenal, Spurs etc.
Guess its the Bassongs and Guthries who are going to take the club to a top six place eh!
Bout time everyone figured it out , the priority is get some bodies in (cheaply) preferably in the
    £2m. to £3m. range.
Forget the £5m. players, not gonna happen.
Soh ! lower half finish again for a team rated by UEFA in the top five of the PL.
Yo Ash! if you need some extra dosh, you can allways revert back to a Plc. give the loyal fans a chance to share in their club, you can still be the “Big Kahuna” being the major shareholder, why not!

  • 56 Danny // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:23

You do know that M. Ashley has fallen quite a bit on the richest list, from a 25th last year, to a 54th this year…
He recently lost almost £129 on some shares.
Maybe thats why he’s keeping a tight pocket? And, he became a billionare when he got £929m in ONE day when he floated his company Sports Direct on the stock market last year.

We have been bought by a man who isn’t used to spend this kind of money, and i think he’s taken a bit of a scare from it…

    Im with you daiv,
where is all the money from our (three year opion) season tickets going?
where has the tv money gone?
you can’t keep blaming wages, when we have already cut the wages down, and still hope to! we still need to get rid of overpaid players who dont do much if anything for the team, such as smith, duff, ameobi, and injured? viduka!
Yes i also agree guthrie has been a good signing and will prove he is a good player,Im glad we no longer waste money!! but we do also need quality proven experience! which does cost money! KK I love and was the right person for the job as long as he gets a decent transfer fund!!
MA is just pulling the wool over our eyes!!!
    should we not expect more!!!????

  • 58 Shearer#1 // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:29

Then I don’t want him holding back my great club. Sell and clear off. I don’t care he’s lost money. What I care about is that its affecting my club. Didnt we recently bid big for both woodgate and modric? I think there is probably money in the kitty but we just havent been able to seal the big deals yet. it’s just the way it is for us at the moment - we will prob have to wait until the bigger clubs have made their moves before we can make our bigger ones

I wish it’d happen now but it won’t and moaning about stuff we don’t know about is no help at all tbh.

40 years I know is a long time but even if we spend £50-100-1000 million does not guarentee success, 2 cups and the league every year thats all thats up for grabs apart from European comp and so many clubs after them.

I’m happy with good competetive football at NUFC and in time success will come our way I’m sure.

  • 75 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:49

so harrier - you as a fan are happy to spend hundreds maybe thousands a season and just see NUFC play average football, getting now where fast!! Im not!!!! I watch football and pay my money to be entertained!!!

  • 76 Alex // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:49

A lot of people on this blog seem to forget that we have proven quality in the side already Owen Given Beye Martins . Most prem teams would love to have those players and we have got them . Keegan now needs to bring players in to complement these guys ,we do not need superstars we need good players that can improve the squad and that’s why we have brought the 2 new guys in. Quality players don’t always have to cost 10 or 20 million they have to be scouted and discovered and when found brought in whether they have a name or not.Ashely is not stupid when Keegan tells him he wants a player that is going to cost big he will pay up , he was prepared to buy Mordic but he wanted the bright lights of londen. The transfer window has only been open for a couple of weeks and we already have a couple of new players including an Argentine international , that to me does not suggest that Ashely is tight fist ed it tells me that we will bring the right sort of players in for the right price , and not the Alberts & Boumsongs & Emres that cost us massive amounts and put the team where thy are now midtable .

  • 77 smc894 // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:50

Not that i think he should get a first team spot. As of now anyways.

  • 78 normski1930z // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:50

here here hps season tickets arent buttons these days!!!!!

  • 79 Joe // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:52

I feel for Ashley becuase he has bought the club and appears to have been stitched by Shepherd. The position Newcastle were in was unsustainable, if Newcastle were relegated with there debt, the wage structure and with Shepherd still in charge we would have become another Leeds. Ashley is worth circa 1.5 billion (before recent losses) and he has ploud around 250 million of that into Newcastle (thats a large chunk of his money). That is an expensive seat, if he was trying to make a profit now is not the time to sell with us a mid table side. He has stabilised the club and is funding a more realistic transfer policy. We will sign some big players, but we also need ambitious squad players who will fight for the jersey as oppose to mercenaries who will sit on the bench, pick up there 50K p.w. and take us for a ride.

  • 80 ObaFan2 // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:54

Spyro, just exaggerating to get a point across lol, what did chelski win last year?

Also a US billion is different to a UK billion I think lol

  • 81 Seymour Butts // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:56

saying that we NEED to spend lots is extremely small minded and as shown in the past can fail miserably! you can get very good players for small amounts of money as shown with arsenal, portsmouth and everton who are all very tidy when it comes to buying good players on the cheap. clichy for example cost 250k. daiv, are you saying you wouldn’t take that just because its cheap??? who cares if we havent spent very much in getting these players in i’d prefer we didn’t to be honest and if the other clubs think that we’re losing our grip then so be it we’ll show em all next season.

  • 82 harrier // Jul 12, 2008 at 16:57

normski you were saying that this is going to be the start to some more ambitious signings and i was agreeing. I am in a bad mood right now cause i am hungover and i am sick of seeing these idiots slating keegan’s purchases. What do you guys want? Another new owner and manager? Another season of instability? Judge them on their product once it is complete. “just see NUFC play average football, getting now where fast!!” You haven’t seen them on the pitch once. How the hell do you know how good they will be? If we are in midtable by january, i will agree, but let keegan do his thing.

  • 83 normski1930z // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:00

fair enough harrier all am saying is “get your head checked”is abit of a personal attack at me for no reason…..and for the record i havnt slated any of the signings i am just hoping for more..

  • 84 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:00

Obafan2 - here were Chelsea before, Abromovich?? look at them now!! Im not asking for that but Im asking for more money to compete!!! when we all insomeway or another invest into the club to watch good football!!!

  • 85 Spyro // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:02

Chelsea were a good club before Roman

  • 86 normski1930z // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:05

yes but they wernt in the top table bracket before roman came along they were 90 million in debt and were giong to have to sell players off…

  • 87 9 Shearer // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:12

Lets all relax a big signing is coming. KK loves the club and he will only bring quality to the club. THe quality signing will come remember guys this transfer season is full of surprises so stop speculating it all sucks.
Line up for friendly against THe POOLS.

  • 88 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:13

    Do Chelsea fans care????
I certainly would love NUFC to be where chelsea are now!!!

  • 89 London Mag // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:18

Daiv, do you fully understand that without MA’s purchase of the club we would very likely
be in administration with a minus 15 points to our name. Some supporters are being totally
unrealistic. I ve watched this club for 45 years and also spend a fortune travelling home and away, and home is a 700 round trip. You and others need to understand that 72% of total income was going on player wages. That doesn’t leave a great deal to run the rest of the business, which costs a fortune to run on match days alone.
Where is the profit you talk about. There simply isn’t one.
You are obviously a fan who appeared around the early to mid 90’s and think it is our god given right to be at the top. Unfortunately football isn’t and has never been like that. It has to be earned. It took Ferguson years to win his first trophy. If we had beaten them in a cup tie in
the 80’s he would have been sacked. How did he
    succeed, with kids.
Wenger likewise. Toure £750,000, Clichy nowt
    and it goes on.
They both proved you don’t need to put the club into hock to build a football team.
Lets just get behind MA and lets see if his youth policy works.

  • 90 Taiwantoon // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:23

    @Seymour Butts

I don’t think anyone is saying that we need to spend big. What ppl like daiv are saying is simply that we need a few more proven quality if I am not wrong.

We are all aware of the fact that the club is not in the position to attract the likes of Ronaldo, Etoo…etc. Anyway, I like the policy to sign young talents, just like the good old Sir Bobby era.

Our problem is that the club seems to put too much emphasize on re-sell value of players. Our current policy is as unbalanced as the FFS one and this could backfire us.

DG is very likely to turn out to be a good buy for us in 2-3 years time, but we also need someone now. As much as I dislike Joey Barton, I don’t think DG is already as good as he is.

  • 91 London Mag // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:28

Daiv, another thing, you support your team through thick and thin regardless. SJP would probably be a better place without the likes of you. Gan shoppin wi your lass on a Saturday instead. Or do you go to the game to have a good
    old moan. Divvy!

  • 92 normski1930z // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:30

Taiwantoon you are making a very valid point there dude……

  • 93 9 Shearer // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:35

As said earlier by one of our mates we ve many proven players many clubs would love to ve. Lets forget the last 2 seasons we ve hard wrong managers bt now we ve KK. You are using previous results to judge our players which aint right lets judge them from the pre season games.

  • 94 Hadji // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:35

HPS….They dont care atm,but do you realize that its all down to one man and that man is Roman. What happens if he quits one day, they’ll ship out Chelsea to 4 th league to play agains Forrest Green and Stafford Rangers.
Always think 10 years ahead HPS and not just for tomorow.

  • 95 Angryman the Angry Fan // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:41

SPYRO, you say a proven player could come in and be crap for us and be a waste yeah, so what makes you think an unproven player is gonna come in and light the place up? And if he doesnt? 1mill 2mill threemill whatever, would that not be a waste?

If i were a betting man, I would bet that the proven player would be better than an unproven player anytime of the day!!After all, they are PROVEN!

You say you havent seen guttierez play and yet you say he is a good signing??

I am interested in your logic on these comments.

PS your comments also contradict themselves with your constant slating of Taylor, you advocate signing low cost, players for the future…..This lad is free, 21 year old and learning his trade. Danny Guthrie 1-2mill, learning his trade and 21 years old. Similarities are remarkable yet you would drop Taylor??

Taylor is the under21 captain, remind me of Danny Guthries International record?

Lets have a bit of parity in your comments lad!!!!

  • 96 AndyNUFC // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:45

you never no he could either be a gem like speed and lee
or a disaster like viana n jenas
    ——————————————–
Firstly, Viana wasn’t exactly a disaster, he just lost form. Jenas however was a heartless cockney who was stupid and young, the handball against Arsenal a prime example, he loves London, the ****

  • 97 Angryman the Angry Fan // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:47

Joe, if Ashley was indeed ’stitched’ by Shepherd…he has one person to blame!! Yip you got it, himself……

Before the purchase of any company, the buyer, by law, must be given access to the company accounts to carry out due dilligence on the financial health of the business they are about to purchase.

If this isnt carried out correctly, then the purchaser has only themselves to blame. Which leads me to the analogy used by Mr Ashley ‘ that is a very expensive seat i am sitting in’ he knew that before he bought the club and promised us the good times back!!!

  • 98 9 Shearer // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:51

Lets talk abt something else u all seem to pissed off

  • 99 Hadji // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:52

Daiv….Thats the beauty of the transfer market, you buy for 1,5 mill then you sell him for 10.
Adebayor was bought for 4-5 mill and will be sold for at least 23 mill pounds.
How much Spurs paid for Carrick, was 2.75 mill i believe, and 15 mill pure profit
how much we paid for Jenas….4 mill
I have at least 50 players in my head right now who dont worth more than 2 mill but will worth at least 4 times more in few years.

  • 100 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:53

Hadji - All im saying is if the club (MA) spend money in good quality investments such as a mixture of talented youth, and quality experience ! and not waste money!! every season!!the fans would be happy!!

  • 101 Davey G // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:56

    Angry Fan,

SPYRO/Dragoner thinks that Cacapa is the best defender at the club and allardyce was the best manager we had. Honest!!

that is why he has it in for Taylor. Its not about ability or anything with the lad!!He just hates being wrong!

  • 102 Mitch H // Jul 12, 2008 at 17:57

Daiv, you sound a right bitter little mug.

Why on earth would you slag MA, when he has sorted our club out.

Debt paid off, youth policy sorted, KK installed.

60 days till the transfer window closes?

Take your negativity elsewhere mate, it aint the geordie way.

  • 103 Joe // Jul 12, 2008 at 18:00

Angryman the Angry Fan in response to your comment I am well aware the purchasor in any transaction may carry out a due diligence prior to completing a given transaction. However, there are ways to manipulate financial statements and company records to hide the true extent of a companies financial position, an individual may also undertake window dressing to further cloud the true extent of the position. I do not want to analyse this too much but Newcastle were extremely highly geared (an accounting term) meaning they have high levels of debt in relation to equity. This makes the company more susceptible to insolvency.
The point I was making was that we were fighting relegation for large chunks of last season, if we went down, the so called balloon payment would not have saved us. Ashley has taken on Newcastle investing circa 1/6th of his own money, cleared the debt. The Glazer bought Man Utd but passed the debt on to the company, they owe nearly 700m to Banks. Ashley, does sit in an expensive seat, but he also understands there is no such thing as a quick fix, give it time, we will reap the rewards.

  • 104 Shearer4eva // Jul 12, 2008 at 18:02

4 some reason, i think we have the money but we just coundnt attract.. how much player has snub us anyway by now? I think KK had to do us all again, rebuilding us from basic.

Those who said ashley never spend is a bit weird. Fat Sam did buy last season couple of quality with beye n enrique? the others well.. not quality just overrated

  • 105 Kaler // Jul 12, 2008 at 18:08

Like others on here I am starting to get pissed at Ashley… However, the transfer window is still open and i’m going to keep myself from slating him until it closes. If by then we haven’t spent at least £5mil on a player then i’ll be joining the crowd on the steps on St. James’ in protest at the f..

I mean, we were in for Modric right? We must have bid at least 10mil for him, fingers crossed we will pull at least one 10mil+ star signing out of the bag before the new season.

  • 106 canmag // Jul 12, 2008 at 18:16

buying expensive doesn’t always work , look at some of the big buy’s that came and were pure rubbish ,remember rob lee what we payed for him and what a player he turned out to be.

  • 107 Mitch H // Jul 12, 2008 at 18:19

i’d much rather bring in 10 good young prospects than spend the same money one one or two trophy signings.

This club’s been neglected for years & we are way behind the top 4.

MA’s investement in youth is the way forward.

3-4 years down the line, we may well see a young newcastle side to be truly proud of.

The last time we could honestly say we had a team to be proud of was the last time KK was in charge.
