Newcastle Youth Policy In Full Swing

July 14th, 2008 · 58 Comments

Newcastle United’s new policy of signing emerging young talent is starting to show some results.

dennis-wise-22.jpg

Dennis Wise - Newcastle’s Director of Football is a busy man

Dennis Wise is the man charged with overall recruitment at the club, and that also includes the youngsters as well as the older players.

The latest youngster being offered a trial at the club is a Bulgarian 16-year-old.

Newcastle started their youth recruitment policy in earnest last January when they signed 5 top youngsters at the club.

They were Swede Ole Solderburg, Hungarian Tamaz Kadar, Englishman Ben Tozer, Frenchman Wesley Baheng and Italian Fabio Zamblera.

And now Bulgarian defender Georgy Terziev is the latest to have an opportunity at the club and he is already training at the club, so the Newcastle management can take a look at him.

Georgy joined the Magpies today, after being granted permission by his Bulgarian club. Nafteks, to spend the week with the Premier League club.

This will be Terziev’s second stint on Tyneside, as he has already trained at the club back in April.

Although we still haven’t signed top 15 year old English youngster Aaron Spear yet, we still expect Aaron to arrive on Tyneside before the end of August.

He’s already said Newcastle are the club he wants to join.

His mother, Caroline, has also visited the Newcastle United facilities, to check things over, and seemed extremely impressed, and was satisfied the club would take good care of her son.

The Youth policy that owner Mike Ashley and former Chairman Chris Mort put in place, certainly seems in full swing now, and we think it’s an excellent policy the club are pursuing.

Comments very welcome.

This is good for the future of the club. Building a good squad at a lower cost and lower risk.

    Ole soderberg Ed,
    Never mind,
A love reading articles like this one to get a glimpse of the up and coming
Keep up the good work Ed!

Yep, things are starting to happen but a few 1st teamers need…. hopefully very soon :)

  • 4 Matt // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:23

    Well done Dennis Wise.

  • 5 Davies // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:27

Love it. We could be looking at the first team a few years from now. All five of the signings from January seem to have settled well, though I hear rumours that wor Fabio isn’t as settled as he’d like to be.

These could be the kids that bring long awaited silverware to SJP. Let’s hope they keep getting the talent in.

Right then, how about a few first teamers for now!!

  • 6 Alex // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:27

Why has Spear not signed yet? It seemed like a done deal a couple of weeks ago.

  • 7 keith g // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:29

good stuff. the italian striker sounds promising. wisey should take a look at bourenmouth’s tom fisk- big things predicted

  • 8 Aaron Spear // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:30

i have been looking for a newcastle blog for ages. Im about to sign, and im buzzing. I just want to know everyones opinions of this fantastic club?

Dennis has treated me like gold and makes me feel like a top player who could do well here. He is like a second dad to me, makes me feel wanted. That is a real motivation for me to do well, not just for myself, but for him

I can wait to start training :-)

  • 9 sirjasontoon // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:32

I think they are building for the future now,
lua lua has the potential to be outstanding and that young italian chap (striker) sounds like a great prospect as well as possibly Spear and the other young lads.

As it is no longer a club policy to splash mega money on big names I think it will probably be a much better club in the long run as it seems the prima donna days are now over, that can only be a good thing for the dressing room with KK at the helm.

If those young lads really want it and work hard they each have a chance to become real legends..the facilities are in place lets hope they make good use of them and make the grade.

  • 10 beye the great // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:35

this is the best wayif we are going to someday get in the top 4 hopefully these players will be good enough to get us there someday tough why out of all these young players are non midfielder and about the rumours of zamblera not selling in i hear the complete opposite that he is even calling himself an adopted geordie

  • 11 Hadrian // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:37

alot of those players were scouted by the previous regime and have jack todo with wisey .

  • 12 Nizo // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:42

Good to see us getting faces through the door, a number of the youngsters signed seem to have a positive things being written about them, i.e. Zamblera and hopefully Spear.

But still think we shouldnt neglect the present as we need players to build upto a sound level when these players do get their chance. It’ll ensure the minium of fuss when they get introduced and let them feel what its like to be part of a successful club.

  • 13 Graham // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:43

Hadrian - other than Lua Lua (who came with his brother), when was the last time we brough in 15 & 16 year olds from anywhere else other than the north east?

Think what you like about Wise but he seems to be doing a decent job together with his collegues in brining in good young talent

  • 14 Matt // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:43

Spear has already enrolled in school up here for September.

  • 15 Lazy // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:45

I’d prefer it if they concentrated more on our immediate future. But keep up the good work signing youngsters too. :)

  • 16 Spyro // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:46

    good news

  • 17 Alan Shearer // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:46

welcome to the toon, young ‘un. HAHAHAHA

  • 18 Matt // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:51

Should of mentioned Richard Money’s appointment too, Ed.

  • 19 Nizo // Jul 14, 2008 at 17:53

Fair point Graham, we havent really cast our net out at all recently, this is like the first time in a long time we’ve really gone after Youth and tried developing our own. Hopefully it’ll pay dividends.

  • 20 harrier // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:09

Is that really you Aaron Spear? If it is welcome to the club :)

  • 21 Martin // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:23

Hadrian has a point - Most of those youngsters were brought in BEFORE he started working!

However; theres still good news coming from this site every couple of weeks about another youngster we’re looking at - and that IS down to Wise, so yeah, I’m very happy…Like everyone else though, I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple more ‘pollished’ players please!

  • 22 Chris // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:26

It’s probably a wind up merchant like fernandoh harrier. His next comment bound to be degrading.
If by any chance you are the real Aaron Spear though, why haven’t you signed for us yet?

  • 23 Leo // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:27

you cant fault them but the 5 in jan werent they brought in by other ppl? i havent had time to read the other comments so maybe this has been brought up and maybe im wrong

who knows until i get the time to read it lmao

  • 24 neil009 // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:30

Great to see all the young’uns coming to the beloved of us all, although i must voice a small note of caution. Haven’t we been building for the future for the last 25 yrs?

  • 25 tom tomb // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:33

Aaron you will be be able to go for a coca cola with the majority of this site !
No offence to all over 15!

  • 26 Martin // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:39

    neil009 - Possibly, I’ve not been alive that long…

Look at the last time we invested heavily in youth - we finished 3rd and beat teams like Juve in the Champions League!

  • 27 carling // Jul 14, 2008 at 18:51

    who is spear

  • 28 Patrick // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:08

I admire the eagerness of Aaron researching on NUFC’s blog (again, if you are the real one, haha! :D) and that really means Aaron wants to us for sure.

I am not sure if this is true, but I think the transfer process for U16 is different from the regular transfer process because of extra protection to the young lads. That should be why that we never see any news coming up for for Aaron’s transfer. Anyone knows if I am speaking the right thing?

  • 29 dan_from_france // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:09

sounds good wha we are doing and in a few years can only get better but anyway where are the 1st tamers? we need them now and even give calling out for them.
But its just great that keegans back at the club
sign some one big any way
    lol

  • 30 chrisbunton // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:11

MA is a clued up bloke….and all the fans who are on his case should be ashamed! He’s put a long term structure in place and is building the club from the ground up….instead of throwing money away on players like Luque. It’s worked for Arsenal so why shouldn’t it work for us? After all we’ve spent big for years and won nowt!

  • 31 domtoon // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:15

Aaron, if that’s really you matey, pleased to meet you :o). You truly do have the potential to command tens of thousands of Newcastle fans’ love, adoration, and undying support - week in, week out, week in again.

Stay true, loyal, keep your integrity, and the bright lights of the Toon will shine down upon you when we rise back up the table and the Toon Army will stand behind you and chant your name when you eventually break into the senior squad.

Oh, and whack a few goals past the opposition as well - especially the Mackems!

Pre-emptive welcome - I hope the deal goes through soon and I look forward to seeing you play in those famous Black and White stripes.

  • 32 Patrick // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:20

    @chrisbunton

MA has just been with the club less than 1 year. It is okay if we haven’t seen any effect on this new policy.

  • 39 chuck // Jul 14, 2008 at 20:08

Dont want to burst everyones bubble and certainly agree with the basic premis of buying young and cheap .

However hasnt this been policy at Man. U. for decades, its also the policy at both Liverpool and has worked very well for the Arse.

But how many of those hundreds of youngsters make it through the ranks to the first team ?

Other than Brown and O`Shea, who else has come through from the youth level at Old Trafford in the last few years?

The same applies to the scousers and Arsenal
Face it folks most of the squads came via the market and not all came cheap.

To compete in the PL to-day is not the same as a couple of years ago, never mind the CL.

Arsenal, although a well run club with wealthy owners and good revenues are still very leveraged as are both Liverpool and Man.U,
    who`s debt level is astronomical.

No wonder Ashley feels like the lone ranger,
it takes megabucks to run a major club and be competetive .

So for those of you who see youth as the answer
    Fuggedaboudit!
Sure some may make it but the transfer market
will still be the deciding factor in the end.

  • 40 Georgy Terziev // Jul 14, 2008 at 21:17

Wheteher it was Aaron Spear who wrote or not, in case he is out there reading Ed’s blog, we all wish you welcome to NUFC and hope you will be part of the revolution that truly awakes this sleeping giant.

  • 43 Punk Skunk // Jul 14, 2008 at 21:45

    Here , here Valle!..

…Well chuck, it used to be the other way round, hence, at least half a team from the local area!..
…Then, in the 80’s manure started to buy the league…Therefore, everyone followed…Then cackburn bought it, once…weeds attempted to buy it…Then chavski bought it…& you get even more pretenders atm…So, historically, it’s quite a recent developement…But basically, it ain’t gonna last, it’s not sustainable!..
…So ultimately, the transfer thing has reached a zenith, apogee, if you like?..& any year now, we’re gonna see it all change again…& buyin’/sellin’ players/people will become a thing of the past!..& that will possibly even up the field of play…at least for a little while, until the powers that be find a new way to get ahead, yet again!..
    :D

  • 44 Punk Skunk // Jul 14, 2008 at 21:52

Probably, players will out & out just choose who they wanna play for…If they don’t already?..
…As there will nothin’ in it for the team they play for already!..i.e. transfer fee…

  • 45 Patrick // Jul 14, 2008 at 22:20

There are more than one “players” logging on already.

If some of the new guys are reading this blog, welcome Aaron Spears and Georgy Terziev

    …and Barry Venison!

  • 46 measly hike // Jul 14, 2008 at 22:56

The modern day youth policy is totally different from that of a generation ago. The lines between bring THROUGH talent and aquiring it from abroad is blurred more than ever. Arsenal HAVE produced some fantastic players recently through they’re “youth system”.. an academy is only one part of that process. Buying in outside talent at a young age has given them the likes of
Fabregas, signed from Barcelona at 16yrs.
Carlos Vela, bought as a 17yr old
Denilson signed at 19 yrs old
Gael Clichy signed at 18 yrs old
    Nicklas Bendtner signed at 16yrs
    Armand Traore signed at 17
Emmanuel Eboue, signed at 22yrs old
Robin Van Persie, signed at 21yrs old
Kolo Toure, signed at 20 yrs old
Emmanuel Adebayor, signed at 21yrs old
Samir Nasri, signing at the age of 21yrs old.

None of these are traditional home grown youth players, all of them have been bought into the club from outside and all of those would pretty much get into our squad and almost all of those were under £3 mil. If you get it right then buying in youth is the way to go, you just have to make sure that you really are buying QUALITY youth.

The other problem that fails to be understood by most clubs is that not only is it about talent but about schooling that talent into a way of playing football so that when they step-up they fit into the system being employed by the first team. Arsenals youth sides play almost identical styles of play to the main squad where as most sides tend to have a “square peg into round hole” approach to youth sides, changing the system to fit the youth players available at the time irrelevant of what the main squads tactics are.

Also whilst I remember, those that are moaning Danny Guthrie being a “Man Utd and Liverpool reject” etc let’s not forget that Lassana Diarra went out the door at both Chelsea and Arsenal.. ;o) another player that would get into our side..

  • 47 micepie // Jul 15, 2008 at 0:27

No one writing on here can “burst anyone’s bubble” or alter anyone else’s opinion really. Just offer their own to the mix.

I’m excited by all the young prospects we’re recruiting, though if we could get a couple more Brits - ideally mf - even better.

  • 48 Charlie // Jul 15, 2008 at 0:43

We can develop some of these young guys and then if we decide they have cannot make the first team we have a squad of young guys we can sell to weaker clubs who want to give them a chance. It will make us some money in the long run and also give us more chance of finding some great players. Many of the younger guys we have have played a lot of rep football like Fabio and Kadar. This means they have passed a few hurdles already and yeah the last is the biggest but if they make it theyll be ours.

  • 49 Mitch H // Jul 15, 2008 at 1:31

This current youth policy we are adopting will surely be the solid foundations that our club needs & can build some success on.

Well done MA, KK, DW, & all involved in the new youth policy.

For the first time in years, I’m genuinly excited about our club’s future.

Remember in the early 90s Man Utd’s squad was full of kids.

Commentators suggested that you “win nought with kids”.

Well Man U blew that old myth right out of the water.

The only other team that have challenged Utd’s supremacy since then (excluding Chelsea, who have a bottemless pit of cash), is Arsenal.

It seems pretty obvious, than an outstanding youth system, appears to be largely behind the success these two teams that have in the PL. The two best footballing teams in the last 10 or so years.

We need stability, we need to hold on to Keegan, through thick & thin (& it will get thin at times). Stability, Mike Ashley’s buisness acumin, & a second to none youth policy, is the very best chance we have of bringing some long overdue success to SJP.

  • 50 AndyNUFC // Jul 15, 2008 at 1:51

My only regret is that KK is only here for 2 more seasons to nurture the youngsters and inspire them.

  • 53 howaytheladsII // Jul 15, 2008 at 5:17

youth policy is for the club future, however the club is not good at the moment…I think that should focus on the current “A” team first

  • 54 dick // Jul 15, 2008 at 9:18

you need a mix of youth and experience , looks like portsmouth are going for Wayne Bridge ,thats the sort of player we should be bidding for as well as the youngsters

  • 55 chuck // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:03

Some really interesting and insightfull comments
in regards to the youth system, makes a change from the usual sniping and juvenile pissing matches.

A 17-year-old Danish midfielder has travelled to Tyneside today for a trial. He’s playing for Esbjerg fB’s best youth team. Esbjerg fB finished 7th last season in the best Danish division, SAS Ligaen.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
