Zamblera Helps Italy To Draw Against Greece

July 15th, 2008 · 75 Comments

Newcastle United’s 18 year-old star youngster Fabio Zamblera, played for 73 minutes last night for Italy against Greece in the 2008 Euro Under-19 Championships in the Czech Republic.

fabio-zamblera-2.jpg

Fabio Zamblera - Italian Geordie signed for Newcastle last January

Fabio had a good game, and had a goal disallowed as Italy under-19s left it really late to get a draw in their opening group game of the European Championships against Greece.

Greece went ahead with a 23rd-minute goal, and the young Newcastle striker thought he had equalized when he scrambled home from close range, but he was flagged for offside.

Italy left it very late when AC Milan striker Alberto Paloschi converted a 90th-minute penalty to save the Italians.

The big shock was England’s 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic, and it was their first defeat in the tournament, including all the many qualifying games for the English side.

Italy are in the same group as England and they meet them on Thursday, which should be a good game, while Greece take on hosts and group leaders the Czech Republic.

Tamas Kadar’s Hungary beat Bulgaria 1-0, but of course Tamas and Andy Carroll are both unable to participate because of injury.

We’ll keep you posted on developments.

Comments welcome.

Good lad. Get him in the first team!!! (Ha!)

Being first on the wall really isn’t that much of a thrill. I don’t see why cooldj gets so excited about it.

  • 2 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:16

Will be a monster up top for us in 5 years time!

  • 3 Davies // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:18

Agreed. I don’t think he will take that long Kash2. Give him a couple of years.

  • 4 WesToon // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:22

Yea Kash2,hopefully even less than 2 years, hopefully he makes our bench atleast this year, foreign players are very tuchy, they need to feel Loved & appreciated otherwise they turn in2 ungrateful “cockney” wannabies ike our friend N ‘Zogbia,BUT well played young Lad,your future is bright mate

  • 5 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:27

When I say Monster, I mean him terrorising defences like Luca TOni does. Toni absolutely batters CB’s all over the place. When Fabio hits 22/23, he’ll be fully developed physically and throwing himself about!

Magpies make late move for Aimar

    Aimar nearing move
Pablo Aimar’s agent has hinted that Newcastle are now very serious contenders to sign the Argentinian star, with a proposed move to Portuguese giants Benfica seemingly stalling.

It had been expected that Aimar would move to Estadio da Luz following Real Zaragoza’s relegation and Benfica sporting director Manuel Rui Costa has made the recruitment of his potential successor as the Lisbon club’s playmaker-in-chief a top priority for the summer.

Interest from England and Greece has complicated matters though and Zaragoza are now holding out for more than the €7.5 million (£5.97 million) on offer from Benfica.

The Spanish club’s president, Eduardo Bandres confirmed: “There are offers from Portugal, England and Greece, and some more may arise because the market is unpredictable.

“We will not sell Aimar in conditions that are not favourable.”

Both Everton and Newcastle have been linked with the former Valencia and River Plate star but his agent has seemingly ruled out a move to Merseyside.

Now the Portuguese press are claiming that it is Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle who have firmed up their interest in the 28-year-old.

“We have begun to speak to an English club – not Everton – and already we have offers for the club and player,” Gustavo Mascardi told O Jogo.

Aimar was hailed as one of South America’s brightest prospects when swapping River Plate for Valencia in January 2001, and under Rafa Benitez’s guidance at the Mestalla, Aimar won the Spanish league title twice and the 2004 Uefa Cup.

  • 8 Davies // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:47

Setanta are saying we’re back in the race for Aimar. Apparently he’s not interested in Everton.

Don’t really know what to make of him. Would he get back to his best, or would he be here for his final paycheque before retiring to a life of ladies and swimming pools?

Probably just speculation, but I thought you’d all be interested.

wwooooo attacking midfielder hope that will shut up all the people predicting the doom and gloom. if we sign him that is ;)

i read the article but who is Gustavo Mascardi. he could be anyone.

  • 12 Matt Lacey // Jul 15, 2008 at 11:55

broon ale, Gustavo Mascardi is Aimar’s agent.

  • 13 Martin // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:00

IF the rumours are true, It’d be ideal to sign him to the pay-for-play contract Owen is apparently being offered!

That way if he’s shit, we’re not THAT badly off, and if he’s good, you don’t mind paying the bonuses!

  • 14 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:02

    i see,. well i hope it’s true!

i know there seems to be an equal portion of fans for and against this signing but i feel keegan could be the man to revive the fire in aimars belly.

it annoys me how the media talk about keegan in such an inferior tone. he is the twice winning european footballer of the year. his goalscoring for every club he has played for is brilliant. he could be considered one of england greatest ever players. i have asked the question on other forums to fans of other teams, i ask them out of all the current premier league managers who was the best player in there prime.

keegan is the answer, yet everyone laughs at him!

they treat him like a clown!

it’s all bollocks! keegan is a breath of fresh air. we are lucky to have him back!

i dont even mind he isn’t talking to the media anymore.

if i was him i would refuse to talk to people who laugh at me!

  • 15 Martin // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:06

    Well said broon

  • 16 natedawg // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:06

i dont think keegan care about the media at all he loves da toon and we love him , thats all that matters lol

  • 17 James // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:09

So he’s already scored more goals in Black & White than Smith who is on £60K a week to score goals for the first team…..

Aimar’s looking a bit rough nowadays.

Sorry I haven’t been on for a while, been to New York! :D

  • 20 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:25

@ToonTimbo: I just said that on the other thread. Insua did sign another contract. I think it’s another ANal O’Lover boob!

  • 21 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:26

@Dave: Aimar is going to be the new Killer Kilcline!

  • 22 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:56

Insua is a quality little player and i WOULD be well chuffed if we got this kid. I have watched him play a few times for Liverpool reserves playing NUFC reserves and Insua stood out from the rest. Yes go and get him it would perk me up a little but still we need proven players.

  • 23 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:56

Liverpool wont let Insua go, he is one of their top youngsters, would be ecstatic if we got him though…however, we need a DM more than a LB

  • 24 Obafemi Martins // Jul 15, 2008 at 12:58

HAHAHA Aimar looks weird in the photo on that link Dave!

Apparently we’re looking at a loan deal for Insua:

  • 25 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:01

OM i hate the loan idea its just my opinion. The clubs that do the loaning seem to be the ones struggling. Either buy the player of leave it.

the thing is, with this aimar stuff, the agent doesnt mention newcastle, he just says it aint everton…i think it is more likely to be portsmouth myself, and i would be happy if it was too

  • 30 Kaler // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:12

Aimar for £7mil for me is a great signing. I mean christ Smith is on, what, 60k a week?? I imagine Aimar would be around the same and he’d do a hell of a lot more for the team even if he wasn’t on his best form. Especially if we got him on a pay as you play type deal.

  • 31 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:14

Can anyone tell me how good Aimer is. I admit i have heard of him on many occasions but how good is he NOW. Just worried about the last argies we had in Bassedas and that other fella.

  • 32 Obafan // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:16

I say buying Aimar will be great business. I think the new challenge is what he is searching for and that is what he is going to find at Newcastle. Let’s be honnest guys, 28 isn’t old, and it seems that players when around 28 have their highest level. He will shine if we can get him and it looks quit possible.

I start to believe that Guthrie can be a good deal aswell.

  • 33 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:18

Toon1978, Aimar is average at best right now, and has been for a few years now

  • 34 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:20

Is he worth what people are quoting something like 6-7 million. Seems an awful lot of money for someone who has been average of late.

  • 35 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:20

Harry Redknapp would be a good manager for Aimar as he is good at resurrecting careers.

  • 36 ronaldeano // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:20

If Aimar can get back his form that he had 4-5 years ago, he would be a brilliant signing.

KK is the man who can get the lad playing again like he used to.

I hope this transfer happens. Keegan wouldent buy him unless he feels that Aimar could do a good job for us

  • 37 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:21

i wouldnt pay any more than 4 million for him in his current state, not to mention his wages are high, not worth the risk in my opinion

  • 38 ronaldeano // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:22

@Spyro, so is Keegan, in fact Keegan is better than Redknap

  • 39 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:23

    refresh my memory Deano

Been watchin Aimar on the old faithful you tube looks good but i am thinking this was his form from a few years back.

  • 43 ronaldeano // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:26

Keegan is top drawer when it comes down to man-management

  • 44 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:26

NEVER watch youtube to see how good a player is Toon1979, big mistake

  • 45 ronaldeano // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:27

    @toon1978, it was.

If KK can get him playing like that again, he would be a class signing

  • 46 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:27

thing is Deano, in recent history Redknapp has done it with Campbell, James, Kanu…

If KK can do it then it would be a good signing, but i just dont see it happening

  • 47 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:29

i see Bassong has released some better statements lol

  • 48 ronaldeano // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:31

We should have signed Campbell before he went to pompey, he never lost his ability although he went a bit mental for a while.

Kanu would have done a good job for us also around that time, but then again so did Sibierski :)

  • 49 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:32

Miss the old days of Ginola, Beardsley, Rob Lee, Clarky, Wor Pav, Albert,Fox,D.Peacock, G. Peacock, Kelly, Cole,Venison,W. Barton, Beresford. If we can bring back a little of them days then i will be happy.

Looks like we are gonna get Insua on Loan,

which is great he is a GREAT player, hopefully we will have option to buy at end of loan:

    http://www.premiershiplatest.com/news/newcastle-boss-keegan-linked-loan-bid-li-5512106.html

  • 54 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:39

oh god, if only we got diarra, we could have built the midfield around him, he is going to be world class

We should also take advantage of Spurs going midfield crazy and try to sign taarabt, last i heard he had handed in a transfer request

  • 55 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:45

Midjew- that article is pure speculation. Alan oliver started this story.

the slack jawed old fool has been missing for weeks and the first thing he does on his return is bring out a story like this.

it’s ironic, a few weeks ago he wrote how liverpool angered keegan by offering him “3 non entitys” in exchange for james milner.
he described these players as, “not even worth mentioning”
2 of the players were, danny guthrie and insua.
now anal oliver is writing an article based on one of these players, not worth mentioning!

  • 56 Hadji // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:49

Daiv…..I think that photo of Aimar is a sign that Bin Laden is gonna buy Newcastle :-)

  • 57 Angryman the Angry Fan // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:54

    to all:-
“Fulham are being very proactive and getting their targets nailed down early. Hodgson is stamping his influence on the club and that’s good to see. The Cottagers are leaving other clubs in the blocks - look at Sunderland, Newcastle, Blackburn etc”

This is written by a Fulham fan on the Setanta Blog!!!!A FULHAM FAN….lords alive!!

This really sums things up for me, and all you folk on here who keep saying that peeps like me are full of doom and gloom……….well, just read what other fans think!!

Oh wait, breaking news today, we are after yet another super starlet……INSUA…….Liverpool RESERVE………grrrrrreat!!

Further sums things up, I am not happy with the transfer policy and as a season ticket holder, who has pumped in just under2k this season alone, in ticket sales I think I have a right to say “I am not F**kin happY”.

I AM doom & I AM Gloom, because i cant see abything to get excited about currently……….

  • 58 Toon1978 // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:57

Angryman the angry fan i totally agree with what you are saying but Insua would be a good signing but not keen on the loan idea.

  • 59 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:57

    fair enough Angryman lol

  • 60 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:00

who on earth have fulham signed though?

  • 61 Hadji // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:14

Angryman…….I understand that you’re very upset with the current situation. So am i to be honest with you,but lets wait till the end of the transfer window.
We should trust KK with his judgements, you never know if these new and unanimous signings wont explode in the EPL.
The easiest thing to do today is to throw big millions on some media hyped players.Thats why so many clubs have huge depts right now and some of them are not even in the elite top flight.
EX:Leeds,Parma,Atletiko Madrid(in last 10 years, they spend 4 in 2nd division),Napoli(just came back from the dead),Dortmund(almost bankrupt 4 years ago with 350mill in depts),Kaiserslautern,Oviedo(great team before, but now i dont even know in which division they play)
The best way to have a profit today,is to follow Arsenal’s blueprints.

  • 62 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:23

what worries me is that when kevin come out at the end of the season and said we were to far behind the top 4!! which none of us can disagree!
the thing is if we are not carefull well be behind teams like portsmouth, everton, villa etc!!
WE NEED TO BUY QUALITY, PROVEN ENTERTAINING PLAYERS WHO STILL ASPIRE TO WIN THINGS!!!!!

  • 63 DanToon // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:24

Angry man i agree, for the money i’ve paid for this season ticket i want to see some class n this aint it!

  • 64 James // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:27

    The simple fact is this

Aimar is far better than what we have (Geremi, Butt, Smith).

But he’s not the player he used to be.

If we could get him for £5 mill then it’s worth a shot

But KK will not go for Aimar in the first place

  • 65 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:30

hadji - I havn’t got problems with KK’s judgement!! I have though with ASHLEYS!!!
All I want is for us to spend £50million on improvements!! and to maintain these improvements!!
how could we be bankrupt remember no dept!! and we would only be spending what we got from the club and tv!!

  • 66 natedawg // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:32

@hate prawn sandwiches, isn’t that what everyone is looking for? what do we have to offer them above everyone else?

  • 67 James // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:33

IT’S NOT WHO YOU BUY IT’S HOW YOU MAKE THEM PLAY!

And KK will make them play with confidence

  • 68 A geordiedoonsooth // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:35

Oh ye of little faith. Believe in what is happening lets wait until we get towards the end of the transfer window & see who we have bought before panicking

  • 69 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:45

but will that not be to late?
yes I do believe KK can make players better! but with the signing we have and youth we get will that be enough??

  • 70 Martin // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:53

HPS - Your well within your rights to feel nervous - but this time 2 weeks ago people were going mental as we were into the 2nd day of the transfer window and hadn’t signed anyone…then out of the blue Spidey signed! From what people have said we have got a cracking deal (a year older than Bentley and just as good apparently - for a 10th of the price) Guthrie again fairly out of the blue (although we had been linked) bought for a suspected 1-2m compare that to the 5m for Sidwell (who is older) and again we’ve done a good bit of business…

I do agree with you, more signings MUST come, but I also think that they will - I have faith in Keegan AND Ashley…I don’t care what they spend to be honest, Spurs and City can blow their 50m transfer budgets if they like - if they can’t do it on the pitch what does it matter how big a name they are!

  • 71 AndyT // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:54

Hey Ed - got an idea for a poll
What are everyone’s expectations for where Newcastle will finish this season
    Champions
    Top 4
    Top 6
    Top half
    Bottom half
    Relegated
re-run it after each transfer announcement (doesn’t look like too much work at the minute :) )

  • 72 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:10

Martins - I respect your opinions and all who come on this site! but I dont have the faith that most have for Ashley!! KK although is good at what he does he cant pull rabbits out of hats!!

  • 73 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:12

Andy t - after last season and only on these couple of signings and the romours of the others!!

I hate to say it but Bottom half if lucky!!

  • 74 AndyT // Jul 15, 2008 at 16:41

HPS - Seriously? which teams would you put above us. Even if our squad didn’t change I would say we have a better first team and squad than the following:
    Bolton
    Hull
    Wigan
    Stoke
    Sunderland
    Middlesboro
    Blackburn
    West Brom
    West Ham
    Fulham

Now if the players under perform as badly as last season, then we’ll struggle, but I don’t think they will. Going into this season the team is much more settled. The manager is not a new entitiy, despite the best efforts of the press to speculate, there’s not a takeover in progress, there isn’t a wholesale clearout of the first team. Remeber last season Dyer, Solano, Parker, Boumsong, Bramble, Babayaro were all first team regulars who left and were replaced with Rozenhal, Cacapa, Beye, Faye, Viduka, Geremi, Barton were all new to the first team and were in and out of the starting line up like yoyos under big Sam. This year, Emre is the only player who was first team regular that has left and with Jonas and Guthrie, has been replaced. I also think over the next 2 seasons at least one of Guthrie, Kadar, Tozer, Waife Danqha or Zambrela is going o turn out to be as good as any 10-15 million signing we could make now.

While I would be delighted to see us sign Amair or Inler and I think we do need more quality to be consistent top 6 and push for the top 4, I don’t think the picture is as bad as a lot of people are trying to paint it.

  • 75 Leo // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:56

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
