Newcastle Fancy Liverpool Left Back

July 15th, 2008 · 86 Comments

The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle United are thinking about bringing a second Argentine to St James’ Park.

emiliano-insua.jpg

Emiliano Insua - 19 year-old Liverpool full back attracting Newcastle

He is Liverpool left-back Emiliano Insua, and it seems the key to the deal could be Insua’s fellow Argentinian Jonas Gutierrez.

Jonas arrived for training, for the first time yesterday on Tyneside, after signing for the club on July 3rd.

Newcastle are after a left back to push 22 year-old Spanish youngster Jose Enrique, although both Wayne Bridge and Nicky Shorey are both available for what appear to be reasonable fees.

Enrique is the only experienced left-back at the club right now, and we certainly need another left back, and maybe a right back too to push Habib Beye.

Liverpool sources have revealed Newcastle’s interest in 19-year-old Insua, who was one of the players offered to Newcastle when Liverpool tried to lure James Milner to Anfield last month.

We’ve already signed one of those, in Danny Guthrie and Insua wouldn’t be a bad buy either.

Insua, who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1989, and is 5′8″ tall, arrived on loan from Boca Juniors in November, 2006.

The loan move has now turned into a permanent deal for the youngster, and earlier this month Insua signed a three year contract that will keep him at the club until June 2011.

It is reported that Liverpool paid Boca Juniors just over £1M for the player.

Following the departure of experienced John Arne Riise, Liverpool have paid £7M for Udinese left-back Andrea Dossena and he is expected to be first choice for the Liverpool side next season.

Insua is naturally right-footed, so presumably he could play in either full back position, and at 19 years-old he presumably will only get better, and must have been good for Benitez to have signed him in the first place.

Insua has played for the Argentine at Under-20 and Under-23 level but played just 4 times for Liverpool last season.

We certainly need to start bringing some players to the club, and if we do sign Insua, we should then be able to persuade fellow Argentine midfielder, Pablo Aimar, to join him at Newcastle United.

There are talks about a loan deal for the player, but we’d rather sign the player outright, because all the advantages are to Liverpool, if he is simply loaned out to Newcastle.

We’ll have to wait and see, but surely we’ll be signing some new players shortly.

Comments welcome.

would be a good acquasition, like guthrie was. solid player, inexperienced. goes with ashleys plan. young and cheap

  • 2 Ericles // Jul 15, 2008 at 13:54

He may a useful and worthwhile signing, but more than bait for Aimar surely. Young enough to understudy both Enrique and Beye. Not forgetting Tozer though. We need some fresh blood especially as it looks as though we will be lumbered with Smith and Barton still! Caution though - this is the press speaking, even if it is local.

PLS PLS bring in this lad, perfect profile for the new TOON ARMY!! We dnt want overpaid has-beens!! Bring on the youth & hunger!!

    Beye Taylor Collocini Insua

    Guttierez —– N’Zogbia

  • 5 Ally // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:04

i feel this would definetly be a step in the right direction, good young and upcoming player and if he excels and enjoys his time on Tyneside this could possibly be made into a permanent deal!

  • 6 abba // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:05

were in trouble if the only players we can attract are the kids from the top fours reserve teams.

  • 7 abba // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:06

If he does well liverpool take him back. if he plays badly we go down! whats going on?

  • 8 Tom_Toon // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:06

    Ed he is 5ft 4 or 5ft 5.

  • 9 toonfan1 // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:07

i thin insua would be brilliant for newcastle. perfect backup and will be able to fill in when needed.

TomToon- is he really that short

  • 10 abba // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:07

harrier- put the players we actualy have in your team and it doesnt make for good reading. I am really starting to get worried about this coming season.

  • 11 Loseit // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:08

thinks you’ll find that any deal would be a loan deal…

would be good for Insua to get some more first team action though - so hopefully it’ll go through!

    toonfan1 - he’s tiny, bout maradona size!

  • 12 micepie // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:09

Well, if we could get Insua on loan with an option-to-buy that would be great, If no option-to-buy a season long deal would obviously be best. After which time maybe Tozer will be ready to step up as understudy lb.
And if Bassong is owt good that would be 4 players in whilst spending very little money. We might then be able to justify one relative splurge on a creative mf.

  • 13 AussieToon // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:10

his 5 foot 5 100% sure bout that

    yep

  • 15 DC Magpie // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:11

I wonder who the third name was offered to us in exchange for Milner?

Could be some pretty canny transfer dealings…L’pool, “You can have Guthrie, Insua and ___ for Milner, as they are the only players we are resolved to loosing.” Toon “No thanks”

…a couple of weeks pass…L’pool increasingly desperate to sign Barry…

Toon, “About those players, Guthrie, Insua and____, I’ll give you 1.5 a pop?”

    L’pool, “Deal”

    Hope it’s Lucas Levia…

    Insua 19
    Kadar 18

    What’s the point?

To me this might send out the wrong signal to Kadar. I don’t believe it.

  • 18 Midjew // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:14

Insua, can play both RB and LB

so thats why he is so usefull, and he is proven good player already.

I bet he would give enqriue trouble getting into 1st team

  • 19 Will Camp // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:14

dc magpie - the third player was jack hobbs - centre back they have just signed from luton i think. highly rated

  • 20 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:14

    aint Kadar predominantly a CB

  • 21 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:15

never Lucas, they will hold on to him for dear life, quality player in the same mould as gerrard

  • 22 Matt // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:15

This guy is pretty damn good. I vote bring him in as competition for Enrique. We can see how Kadar develops and I’ve no doubt he will be better than Enrique so can replace him in the long run. Kadar and Insua will be a damn good pair of left backs in a couple of years.

  • 23 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:15

that article is pure speculation. Alan oliver started this story.

the slack jawed old fool has been missing for weeks and the first thing he does on his return is bring out a story like this.

it’s ironic, a few weeks ago he wrote how liverpool angered keegan by offering him “3 non entitys” in exchange for james milner.
he described these players as, “not even worth mentioning”
2 of the players were, danny guthrie and insua.
now anal oliver is writing an article based on one of these players, not worth mentioning!

  • 24 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:16

dont think we could get him on a permanent deal but loan would be good for now ;)

  • 25 MAG PIE // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:17

    Spyro - Tozer then?

Off topic - what’s to stop Aimar doing a Webster?

  • 26 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:17

spyro. i think you will find the liverpool supporters dont rate lucas as highly as you do.

if you see the comments from the likes of their teamtalk page you will even see most of them suggesting they should have kept guthrie and sold lucas

  • 27 HonoraryGeordie // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:17

I’ve just seen on Setanta News that we are closing in on Aimar! If we get Insua and Aimar, then Guttierez and those two will settle a lot quicker! We then would need a CB, preferably a clever defender like Rozehnal and Cacapa, but stronger and quicker and also a Tall strong and preferably fast striker and a defensive midfielder then our squad will be very very strong!!

  • 28 oga // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:17

Yeah Insua is short and Kadar is a centre back.

Our full backs are fine really. Just sign that greek youth everyone bangs on about and we’ve got 3 good players in contention.

  • 29 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:18

if thats true broon ale then they are idiots, rafa clearly rates Lucas and sees him as quality, if rafa wants guthrie back in a trade for Lucas i will drive him there myself

  • 30 Davies // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:18

The other player in the Milner offer was Jack Hobbs. Apparently another one for the future, but he hasn’t been linked since.

I think Insua could be a shrewd buy for KK. He is what he said he wanted when he started talking about transfers toward the end of last season.

  • 31 9 Shearer // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:20

He is a good lad but not better than Enrique defensively.

  • 32 furrygiblets // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:21

Spyro, Rafa also wants to swap Alonso with Barry…

  • 33 HonoraryGeordie // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:22

That Lucas is Anderson’s partner in crime in the Brazil second team, and apparently they will be the first choice duo in the not too distant future! I think he is very highly rated around the world!

MAG PIE - From what I have read, a Webster can only be done if they are under 27? and played at the same club for over 3 years…I think?! and also some players wouldn’t like to screw over their club in that way, especially a club that is so desperate for money?!

  • 34 Spyro // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:22

lol @ furry, was waiting for someone to say that.

fair enough rafa’s judgement is poor most times, but i myself have seen both Guthrie and Lucas, and there is no comparison. I like Guthrie, but Lucas is pure class

  • 35 harrier // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:23

I hope the Inler deal isn’t dead. We need players before the ‘pool game saturday lest we want to watch Alan Smith losing to a league one side

  • 36 Matt // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:23

Prefer the club to go for Joe Mattock if the best deal they can get out of Liverpool is a loan.

  • 37 WesToon // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:27

@ furrygiblets, hahahaha, very true Mate, very true….hahaha! The 3 players they wanted to swap was rejected, cause that wasnt the right package,we DONT want Milner to leave,i mean only if a PROPER offer came in,then MAYBE!! Cash that is

  • 39 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:29

i refuse to pay attention to anything alan oliver prints.

since he has been away (approx 2 weeks) we havent had a single “toon linked with………” story.

the first day back and he is at it again.

  • 40 neeraj // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:30

why do we need another 19 yo leftback if we already have one thats kadar
enrique is going to be good this season
    and use kadar as backup
all we need is a commanding central defender
    and a solid midfield commander

  • 41 harrier // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:31

    -New on the Aimar Situation-

Now the Portuguese press are claiming that it is Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle who have firmed up their interest in the 28-year-old.

“We have begun to speak to an English club – not Everton – and already we have offers for the club and player,” Gustavo Mascardi told O Jogo.

  • 42 Bigted // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:32

I disagree with loaning players from the self styled “Top 4″, giving them experience whilst our own youngsters do not get the chance.

  • 43 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:34

how many more people want to bring up the aimar developments.
the story has already been brought up on this site ages ago.

there is nothing to suggest it is indeed newcastle in talks with aimar.

it simply says, “it is not everton”. this means it could be anyone besides everton. like portsmouth for instance.

  • 44 DC Magpie // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:36

So what are Tozer’s odds of breaking into the first team this year? He is 18 now and surely pretty close?

Not that I am against signing Insua but like a lot of you I don’t believe it!

  • 45 harrier // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:36

Broon Ale there have been two teams mentioned for him for a month and his agent has already stated his desire to go to Newcastle. We don’t know for sure, but we are the most likely club.

  • 46 MAG PIE // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:36

Over 28 a player can do a Webster if he’s been with a club for 2 years. Under 28 he has to have been there 3 years - that’s my understanding. The reason I raise it re Aimar is that the President of his club says he will only sell at the right price - £7mill suggested. A Webster would save us a fortune.

  • 47 MAG PIE // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:37

    From the Guardian

Andy Webster, the Scotland international, has put himself in the same company as Jean-Marc Bosman after taking a lead in the most significant football freedom-of-contract case in more than a decade. The Court of Arbitration for Sport yesterday issued a landmark ruling that in effect means no players can be held to their contracts for more than three years. For players who join clubs or renew their contracts after their 28th birthday that comes down to two years

  • 48 broon ale // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:39

harrier. i wouldnt use the media as an indication of which players will end up where.

just because the media have only mentioned aimar with everton and newcastle doesnt mean either is interested.

    take gutierrez for example.

as for the agent,! agents say these things. a few weeks ago the agent of some fella from rosenborg was saying if we bid for his client he would consider it.

  • 49 MAG PIE // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:40

The more I think about it - I think this Webster business is driving NUFC’s approach to transfers. Why pay a fee in excess of £10million if a player can walk after 2 or 3 seasons without a fee payable. That’s why we are buying potential at low prices. To stay in business long term and, hopefully, to get competitive in the medium term.

  • 50 Influence raghav // Jul 15, 2008 at 14:45

Milner is simply pathetic,he has no quality watso ever in his crosses.Even MA will do better then him.Let him leave,he is a championship player. We should go for relegated Zaragoza, dalessandro,D.Milito,Aimar bring them on.

  • 54 abba // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:07

How do you know he would be a great buy? You cant tell me you have seen him play. Newcastle is crumbling and it is all down to MA!

  • 55 daiv // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:08

Why are we getting excited about buying reserve players all the time. How is Liverpool reserves supposed to beat the Liverpool first team?
We have no money because MA is keeping it all to prop up Sports Direct. Come on wake up.
Good and cheap someone says. Well certainly cheap and small. We seem to want the smalest team in the world. SWP next?

  • 56 Andy1 // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:09

If we are going to sign a left back to compete with Enrique he should be an experienced one. We have Kadar, Tozer or Edgar that could play there. We don’t need another young left back.

The story is probably just made up because they have seen us sign one of Liverpool’s ‘3 non-entities’ in Guthrie. That’s no disrespect to Guthrie - I think that was a good signing.

  • 57 abba // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:15

It wouldnt be to bad if kk and wise were signing the best kids around in there age group, but it seems they are signing the kids that arsenal, chelsea and spurs arent interested in.

  • 58 Influence raghav // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:34

wow, just gre888 ,Liverpool reserves is wat we are looking for anywayz i hope we buy them all coz they would be better then the team we have had wid some exceptions.

  • 64 Spot The Zebra // Jul 15, 2008 at 16:55

He put on an exceptional display for the reserves at St. James Park last season which Keegan attended so this doesnt come as a surprise really.
I said here a few weeks ago that if we couldnt get Wayne Bridge then we should try for Insua rather than the overrated Shorey.I certainly hope we get him as he looks a fine prospect.

  • 65 Spot The Zebra // Jul 15, 2008 at 16:57

By the way i rate Insua much more highly than Guthrie having watched a few Liverpool reserve games on Setanta and also i reckon Kadar will do better as a centre back eventually.

  • 66 Piers // Jul 15, 2008 at 16:58

Sign him outright if we can……Accept the loan bid if we can’t.

  • 67 Mani // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:06

The most we will get from this guy is a year’s loan, there won’t be an option of signing him permanently. Liverpool rate him highly and would not have let Riise go if they didn’t think they had sufficient back-up. Besides Insua had only just renewed his contract with liverpool less than a fortnight ago. He is contracted untill 2011.

    ——————————————————
I absolutely guarantee that if Shepherd was still in charge of Newcastle United we would be selling this season not buying. If anyone wants to log onto the companies house website and pay the shockingly high sum of £1 they can get the last set of accounts for Newcastle United PLC. Freddies last year saw him get us further into debt, leave a £20 million pound overdraft at Barclays and despite net spending on players only being 7 million, net cashflow for the year was -30million. Since then our income hasn’t gone up much. Premiership TV is more, but we have not had the UEFA cup TV money or sponsorship. Our expenses haven’t gone down much. Ashley has cleared the debt which means that there will be about 7 million a year interest we don’t have to pay. But Newcastle United made a £6Million loss 2005-06 and a £30Million loss £2006-07.
The state of the credit markets at present Barclays would have been looking for a large chunk of the 20 Million overdraft to be cleared so Shepherd would have been looking at needing to find £40 million (i.e. a hell of a lot more than he had personally) somehow just to stand still. Now there were other assets (like the academy buildings etc) that could have been sold to restrict the impact on the playing squad, but he would probably have still needed to sell players or find someone willing to put huge quantities of cash into the club for no return.

I’m not lauding MA - I would like him to put more in (Hell I’d like him to will his entire fortune to NUFC). I just respect thats his choice. But I hate it when people say we should bring back Shepherd. He almost bankrupt the club while fattening his own wallet.

i remember reading an article about liverpool trying to sign milner which said liverpool will offer a swap deal for guthrie who we have already signed insua who we are currently linked with and hobbs who we have heard nothing about

  • 70 donegal toon // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:44

whats really ironic is that when people knew that insua and guthrie were offered as part of the deal for milner, there were crys of “no way” and “not good enough”

    Pot Kettle Black

actually btw isnt that swap deal looking kind of regrettable now, could of got both guthrie and insua plus another starlet (hobbs) plus maybe even squeeze out another 2-3 million for milner, just to be greedy

and even though insua’s signed that contract, does it really matter, im sure you should know by now that contracts in modern football count for nothing, there are endless examples

and another thing since im venting here
who the hell cares what height insua is you egotistical internet correction squad

No way we will buy him!

Saw him last season against our reservs, he does realy look as good as everyone had said!

Plus, he was on loan at liverpool for at least a year, and then Rafa bought him, doesn´t think he did that to give him to us!

how come suddenly we r linked with all available Argie players out there? unfortunately they r either unproven or past their best. Guti is good but may not offer enough flair we need the most. hope KK / Wise / other scouts look at the Argie league if they r really fond of their style. couple good ones like Maxi Moralez and Buonanotte really look great. Piatti and Escudero are more than decent too but both went to Spain already.
